I just got home from Maryland Sheep and Wool and here is my haul! My goal was to get green, gradient, and the cauldron yarn bowl (my husband follows the potter and so told me about it ahead of time). I also ended up with flax, which will be my first time spinning my own, so that will be a fun challenge.

In this cut-throat competition, each team has 3 hours to shear a sheep, card the wool, spin it into yarn — and then turn that yarn into an award-winning shawl. 🐑 via @npr

Having a good time at Maryland Sheep and Wool festival. Got to meet @not-quite-wild ! We compared sheep notes and talked about farming, what else. It was really nice to get to meet! Bothered @savethewailes , who has some awesome new sheep stickers for sale. Made sure to drop in on all my local artists with booths here, met some of the great people helping at their booths.
There's never as much felting stuff as I expect or want, but when we spotted this booth, my family immediately assumed I'd be a while and just abandoned me to my shopping.
I was extremely reasonable and spent $36 for a lovely little bag of dyed felting wool.
I may be less reasonable on the way out, at the plant booth with native perennials and dye plants.

At the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival, the "Sheep to Shawl" challenge is simultaneously cut-throat competitive and warm and fuzzy.
Each team is made up of one sheep and five people: one shearer, three spinners, and a weaver. The team has three hours to shear the sheep, card the wool, spin the wool into yarn, and then weave that yarn into an award-winning shawl.

I would absolutely watch this on TV. :)

Went to the Maryland Sheep & Wool festival this weekend and won an auction on a table loom. And finally started really practicing with my spinning wheel. What if I just keep collecting fiber crafts like Pokemon what then? 👀

95.) My sheep sweater. Made in 2016 to wear to the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival that I attend every year. Hope to see many of you there in early May. And perhaps I’ll make it into a T-shirt someday. #sambarsky #sambarskysweaters #sambarskyknitter #knit #knitting #knitter #art #artist #sweater #intarsia #handknit #sheep #lamb #lambs #wool #lambswool #sheepfarm #sheepandwoolfestival #marylandsheepandwool #marylandsheepandwoolfestival #sheepandwool (at Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival) https://www.instagram.com/p/CplYpJsvbRy/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

YOU KNOW HOW TO SPIN? AND WEAVE? DO YOU HAVE RESOURCES YOU COULD POINT US TOWARDS? ID LOVE TO LEARN SPINING! AND HOW TO SOURCE FIBER
Honestly, with weaving, I pretty much taught myself everything from the internet. But it's been close to a decade since I've done it, so I don't remember what sites I read. :(
Spinning was something I learned entirely from in-person friends - my best advice to find such people is to talk to people at local yarn shops. In addition to asking about spinning specifically, ask about fiber arts festivals - things like Black Sheep Gathering, Maryland Sheep & Wool, etc. They're great places to connect with other fiber artists, and there's usually a plethora of really gorgeous fiber from indie dyers!

It's true about the sheep! I attend the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival every year I can manage it, and you will frequently hear what honestly sounds like a dude bellowing "BAAAAAA!" Personally I find it hilarious, not scary, but it is definitely weird as heck.

Back from this year’s Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival -- I bought a basket, a weaving kit (the green-purple skeins of tencel), a knitting kit from A Hundred Ravens (for a two color shawl), a handspindle made out of spalted wood, two different monofloral honeys, a jar of maple sugar, 1 ounce of Himalayan cashmere fiber, 2 fish pepper plants, 1 poblano plant, 1 Amish Paste tomato plant, 2 basil, and 3 cotton plants (3 green lint, 1 Nankeen brown).

Had someone hand me their phone and direct me to send myself the photo they were showing to me yesterday. So like...I dutifully took the phone and sent the photo to my email, which was already in her contacts, because no one with sheep and any sense disobeys the founder of the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival, but also...the...I would not...do that?
