From a very young age, it became obvious to Thea that she would have to fend for herself if she wanted to get anything done. The result of an affair between her mother, Lea Martin, who was the secretary to a very influential real estate magnate at the time, and the very wealthy man in question, Thea was abandoned by her father from the very moment he found out of her existence. He made it abundantly clear to Lea mother that he had no interest in being a part of his illegitimate kid’s life and eventually reached what was essentially a business deal with her. He would send her 150k to cover expenses and, eventually, college for Thea and she would make sure Thea never, ever showed up on his doorsteps. Coming from a rough background and being short on money to begin with, Lea agreed and blew through the money in no time on expenses that had nothing to do with her unborn daughter.

The second time Thea was abandoned was the day she was born, when she came out looking just like her father and resentment started building within Lea. She had gotten her heart broken by her boss and now she had a baby she never wanted to take care of. She tried for about half a month to learn to love her daughter, but eventually left her with her brother who already had kids of his own and would know what to do with another. After that day, it was a good year when Lea showed up to visit Thea once or twice and, most of the time, their time together was short and not so sweet.

Life with her uncle wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t much better than what her own mother probably would’ve given her. He wasn’t rich by any means and Thea’s presence just meant he had one more mouth to feed. It would’ve been nice if things had turned out the way they did in the movies and her uncle had become some sort of father figure, but that’s not what happened. She understood from a very young age that she didn’t get the same treatment her cousins did and that if she wanted something she would have to get it for herself. The second she was old enough to start working, she did. From the age of fifteen years old, she paid for her food, her clothes, and her school. She was determined to get out the second she turned eighteen.

Somewhere along the way, Thea had developed an interest in fashion from looking wistfully at magazine and using her aunt’s shitty sewing machine to fix up the hand-me-downs she was given. Fashion felt like an entire other world that she wasn’t privy to, and she wanted in. Fixing up her cousins’ clothes wasn’t enough anymore, she wanted to see her own clothes in Vogue and on red carpets. Having kept up good grades while she was in school, she managed to get a scholarship at Drexel to study Fashion Design and left her uncle’s house to move into a shitty apartment in University City. The next four years were a whirlwind of hard work and trying to make ends meet with her scholarship money and part time job salary. She grabbed every single opportunity that presented herself to her and then some. By the time she graduated, she had a job lined up and had made a little bit of a name for herself. She now works as an assistant designer under someone that’s teaching her quite a bit about the industry. Her goal is to one day have her own label, but she’s nowhere near achieving something that ambitious. For now, she still lives in her tiny apartment and pretends like her total lack of family doesn’t bother her. Letting people in isn’t easy when she’s the only person she’s been able to rely on for her whole life had been herself.

Hi everyone, I’d like to introduce myself or reintroduce myself. I’m Diane Cook-Tench. While I post pictures of daily life, I also share insights on creativity and brand building. Why follow me? My insights come from a strong career in communications + current examples of trending work. • It started at 18 when I began working 60-hour summer weeks driving large, gravel trucks, and an occasional tractor-trailer, to put myself through an art education. I loved art and dreamed of a career illustrating fashion ads for department stores. • In college, my design classes opened my eyes to a stronger passion, creativity. Graduating from @mcadedu, my portfolio was full of packaging design, graphics, and advertising. It led to a job in Richmond,VA. (RVA was an early hub for advertising outside of NY and LA.) • Hired as a studio art assistant by a creative director, I worked on the side to create ad ideas. Luckily, my boss championed and sold an early campaign. (It won the Best In Show in the @richmondadclub’s show and medals in NY’s creative competitions.) Better yet, it was effective and I was promoted. • Fast forward from life as an art director to a creative director @MartinAgency. There, I led young teams while creating my own ads. Asked to serve on its Board (the only woman), I had a front-row seat to the operations of a 400 person firm. • Balancing life as a mom/creative director was tricky. Testing teaching, I quickly accepted a spot @VCU. This led to my side-hustle, developing a grad school capable of educating the next generation of creative leaders. Now known as the @VCU_brandcenter, students are taught writing, art direction, research, experience design, and creative brand management. Alumni lead major brands including Nike, Apple, Google, Facebook. • Now I’m teaching execs to unleash their creativity in branding/advertising/marketing. Working with my partner @yichizhang (2015 BC grad), we’re running workshops in Beijing, China this October. • A streamlined website and new blog with tips on brainstorming and workshop opportunities launches soon. • I’m feeling more excited than ever and thankful as I continue to share what I’ve learned with all of you! https://ift.tt/2ZvLKGe
