Grammys Add First Man, Transgender Woman as Trophy Presenters

At the 2017 Grammys, both a man and a transgender woman will be two of the people who present trophies to winners onstage at the ceremony. Although this may not seem like a big step, the Grammys are the first award show to include a man and transgender woman—as other shows tend to stick to the more traditional “trophy girl” to present awards. Neil Portnow, who is president of the Recording Academy stated that this change “acknowledge[s] that ‘music's universal power lies in its spirit of inclusion’ for all people and their voices”. Interestingly, the Academy Awards has featured male and female film students as award presenters. These students came from America but also other countries, vastly differing from the predominantly white nominees at these award shows. However, in recent years, nominees have included African-American artists, and not just white ones. This year, the three trophy presenters will include a transgender model Martina Robledo, model and actor Derek Marrocoo, and model and actress Hollin Haley. Robledo expects people to support her as well as others to criticize her role. But she understands that this is an important time for her to inspire others who are looking up to her, including other transgender boys and girls. But gender should not qualify you to be a trophy presenter. If you are qualified, that is what should really get one the job. This decision comes at a time where many feel that our country to is moving backwards away from all the progress that has been made. It is refreshing that the music industry shows us that we can still move forward and that progress can be achieved. The action of choosing a transgender model to be a trophy presenter may inspire other award shows to do the same.
