Martha Hackett as Seska

So I finally caved and subscribed to The Delta Flyers patreon so I could watch the video versions of the podcast episodes.
I got to the Basics Part 2 episode where they were interviewing Martha Hackett (aka Seska). One of the questions Garrett asked her was whether she knew what Seska’s baby’s name was, if the writers ever named him or not (they didn’t; he was just a no-name). I was kind of hoping Garrett would have named dropped “Sessen” from Star Trek Online, but sadly he didn’t (I can’t remember if the Delta Quadrant missions came out before or after the pandemic). Then he asked what Seska would have named him, given that he would have had some Cardassian-sounding name mixed with a Kazon sounding name, and Martha suggested Seska would probably have put a little bit of Chakotay’s heritage in there as well (aww!!) because of how attached she still was to him. She suggested something like “Gacko”, and my first thought that my stupid animal brain went to was “GOKU!!” 😆
Tumblr media
I’ve joked more than once about how the Kazon kind of resemble the Saiyans from DBZ with the outrageous hair, so I laughed way more than I should have when Martha came up with that name.

whenever my old flatmate and I were watching voyager and we saw Martha Hackett's name come up in the opening scene we'd scream (": what a fun villain

Culluh & Seska were an underappreciated comedy power couple.
He: The ruler repeatedly foiled by his own pride and stupidity.
She: The devious supervillain spy that tries to be a Lady MacBeth but can't seem to get over her crush on her former boss.

The thing about "Worst Case Scenario" is that Seska rewriting a program to torture and ultimately murder Tuvok for his "betrayal" of the Maquis suggests that she was loyal to the Maquis, and not only because of her feelings for Chakotay. She would've had to booby trap the program before "State of Flux," because she's under intense scrutiny then and there's not really enough time anyway. Which suggests to me that she was fueled by real rage: if Tuvok had reopened the program, and been killed by it, how could she have possibly gotten away with it? She wasn't planning to leave at that point, and (!) she specifically depicts herself as Bajoran, not, in some big gotcha moment, as Cardassian:
When Seska returns in this episode [...] the holographic Seska also slightly differs, in appearance, from how the actual Seska ever looked. "We […] see Seska in an incarnation we had never really seen her in before," Martha Hackett commented. "They changed everything – her hair and costume – because it's her creation in the hologram." (Star Trek Monthly issue 34, p. 40)
(Emphasis mine)
This, coupled with her big speech in "State of Flux," makes me wonder whether she would've ever revealed herself as Cardassian, if she hadn't been caught. She seems still to believe in the superiority of Cardassia ("If this had been a Cardassian ship, we would be home now!"), yet follows up with,
"I did it for you. I did it for this crew. We are alone here, at the mercy of any number of hostile aliens, because of the incomprehensible decision of a Federation captain. A Federation captain who destroyed our only chance to get home. Federation rules. Federation nobility. Federation compassion? Do you understand? [...] We must begin to forge alliances. To survive, we must have powerful friends."
We are alone. We must have powerful friends. I don't know how this has never occurred to me, but textually speaking, with the notable exception of Incomprehensible Federation Captain Janeway, Seska seems deeply invested in the community she is ultimately forced to leave. It's, actually, a kind of reverse Ro Laren situation. What a twist.

MICHAEL GOLDBERG
(1924 - 2007)
Along with Norman Bluhm, Grace Hartigan and Joan Mitchell, Michael Goldberg is considered part of the second-generation of abstract expressionists to come out of the New York School. In 1957, he gained increasing critical and commercial success after coming to the attention of the collector Walter Chrysler, who was introduced to Goldberg by his close friend Bluhm and purchased a number of paintings directly from Goldberg’s studio. This private transaction brought the artist to the attention of the influential New York dealer Martha Jackson and enabled him to paint full time.

Sorry but I’m just supposed to be okay about how both Bashir’s and Sisko’s minds were probed by this simulation and it came to the conclusion that Garak was their most plausible lil sidekick ally? How it makes perfect sense to both of them that he would be at their side every step of the way? Sisko thinks he would be the best person to break him out of jail? Bashir has to watch him die to test how much he’ll sacrifice? Help????
Having lots of perfectly normal and proportionate feelings about The Search Part 2

Ask game!
Which actors/actresses would you headcast as your (books/games) blorbos? I'm going to drop Dijkstra, Phil and Vesemir on you but you can choose others, too, of course!
Ah, thanks for asking!! Let's do easiest to hardest:
For old Vesemir I would choose Bert Cöll, his german voice actor. (I mean look at him!!)
Tumblr media
Dijkstra is really hard! Graham McTavish is actually pretty good face wise for the game (imo), he's just not massive enough! But it would be hard to do book-Sigi justice, even though Big Show is kinda looking good:
Tumblr media
I never really thought about Darling Phil. I don't disagree with her TWN version; Cassie Clare does her vibe very well. The only other actress that comes to my mind is Martha Hackett and I found one photo of her as Seska from Star Trek fitting (sorry!).

TV Show - Star Trek: Voyager VIII
Today we're starting off big because I didn't finish the third season, so we're diving straight into Species 8472, which is great. But what's behind us?
We had a very emotional episode with the Doctor, where he creates a perfect family for himself and then quickly realizes, through modifications, what a real family is. I thought it was a really good episode that also showed where the Doctor's journey should go.
Episode 23 was also interesting because it reminded me of how facts have been handled in the recent years of our time. And of course, in the years before that too, but here, things were processed that hadn't happened yet back then, and I thought it was important to address such topics.
Before we get to the current episode, we had a very good "What if…?" episode, although I was a little concerned about Martha Hackett (Seska) here because she looked extremely thin. All the female actors do, but that was pretty intense, although with Seven of Nine, it's going to be even more extreme.
Tumblr media
So, onto the episode currently airing, where my Voyager journey begins today, Scorpion Part 1! I think it's very good that they've taken it a step further here and said, "Okay, we need a species that's even more hardcore than the Borg, so that humans have to ally with the Borg!" It's a bit like the story of the frog and the scorpion trying to cross a river! (OH! Okey, Chakotay told the story few seconds after I wrote this. I know it with a frog and a scorpion, he told it with a fox and a scorpion.)
But I have to admit once again that Voyager is really fun, and I had remembered it differently here and there. I'm looking forward to all that's to come because even though I actually know what's coming, since I've watched it all before, there are still things, as I realized last night, that I've forgotten.

DS9: "The Search, Part I"
Tumblr media
Commander Sisko returns from Starfleet Headquarters with a mission to search the Gamma Quadrant for the Founders, the mysterious leaders of the Dominion. And just in case the Founders aren't interested in diplomacy, Sisko has requisitioned an experimental warship, the USS Defiant.
I remember reading about this episode shortly before it aired, and holy shit I was excited! The Defiant sounded like everything I never knew I wanted to have on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Mind you, I liked the premise of a large, janky station with inadequate defenses, but it made perfect sense to give Deep Space Nine a badass little ship. After years of Star Trek's bigger-is-better approach to ship design, the Dominion's scrappy little fighters in "The Jem'Hadar" gave me a taste for fast attack craft. And it's got a Romulan cloaking device? *chef's kiss*
More than anything, though, I fell in love with the Defiant because it was a prototype for an anti-Borg battle fleet. Up to this point, Star Trek had made the Borg seem impervious to all conventional weaponry, so that they can only be beaten with clever plot devices and hacking, if you're lucky. But Sisko declares in no uncertain terms that the Defiant was designed to "fight and defeat the Borg," and he made me believe it. All at once I imagined a vast Starfleet armada with dozens of Defiant-class ships, and suddenly anything seemed possible. (I eventually got a 223k fanfic out of that notion.)
So I was very ready for a two-parter about this new ship running around beating ass and being cool as hell. I should have known that five minutes after the good guys get a cloaking device, we'd find out all the ways bad guys can see through it. It'll be a while before the Defiant really gets to live up to the hype, but at least the set design gives us the tension of being cooped up in a submarine deep in enemy waters.
We're introduced here to Lt. Commander Michael Eddington and Sub-Commander T'Rul, but unfortunately neither premise really takes off. Eddington is Starfleet's latest attempt to wrest control of DS9's security from Constable Odo, a conflict that heats up fast and then fizzles into nothing. (Odo says he'll resign, but there's no follow-up on that.) T'Rul is a Romulan liaison, part of the deal to get a cloaking device on the Defiant. I still think there were a lot of story possibilities for such a hostile character performing such a lonely job, but evidently the writers didn't agree. Fortunately Eddington will eventually get a much more important storyline, and T'Rul actress Martha Hackett will land a more memorable recurring role on Star Trek: Voyager.
Oh, and uh, Odo runs off to the Omarion Nebula and finds a planet of shapeshifters. We are desperately out of time, fans!
