Mark Rosman - The House on Sorority Row (1983) Well, this was an interesting film. While nominally a part of the 80s slasher boom, set as it is among teenagers being killed one by one at a end of year party, the film itself owes more to classic thrillers like Hitchcock's Psycho and Clouzot's Diaboliques than it does Halloween or Friday the 13th. In fact the three great influences here are Hitchcock, Clouzot and Mario Bava. Bava's influence comes only towards the end but the gel colored lights in the scene where our protagonist is drugged in a room are quite reminiscent of Bava's cinematography. Seeing as Rosman had previously worked as an assistant director for Brian DePalma these are common deep influences for both filmmakers, maybe Palma instilled a love of Hitch, Clouzot and Bava into Rosman? Well clearly that love didn't last long as Rosman's career went on to consist mainly of Disney TV films and comedies starring Hillary Duff (although he did go on to direct one episode of the New Alfred Hitchcock Presents series). As a film Sorority Row works quite well but you really can't be hoping for a grimy slasher, it has pretty good production values, from music to sets and cinematography but ends up not being terribly exciting. However, in such a flooded genre something different is always welcome.
