Beatles Books as vaguely defined friends and relatives at a party you attend with a new crush, whose name you keep mispronouncing.
The longer you stay, the more trouble you have remembering what the occasion was.
The lights keep changing. Shortly after you arrived, your crush shrunk to the size of a mouse, and scurried away. You’re on your own.
The Beatles (Bob Spitz) greets you, an attractive silver fox who seems to be shunned by most of the others. You wonder why. It’s as easy to imagine him as a crying wreck as it is to imagine him on a golf course. Here, There, and Everywhere (Geoff Emerick) disrupts your musings by pulling tapes from his mouth. Seeing your discomfort, he stops and hands you a photograph of John Lennon and Paul McCartney singing into the same microphone. As he does, his pupils take on the shape of hearts. Someone called George announces his intent to poison him.
Anthology (The Beatles) saunters in, puts eight arms around you, and promises to tell you the whole story. They proceed to speak in tongues, and throw popcorn at you. Stu Sutcliffe jumps from a pendant around their neck, lands on the floor, and scurries after your crush.
“It’s always like this,” says Body Count (Francie Schwartz). “I assume you don’t want to listen to my story about a gifted woman who got locked up for depression? That’s fine, I can also talk about frottage, and a certain man’s curves.”
“Oh, stop it,” says John (Cynthia Lennon). She turns to you. “My advice is: Turn around and run as fast as you can.” She demonstrates what she means by disappearing, leaving behind a purse filled with cheerful letters and drawings of herself getting married and giving birth. Everything smells of olive oil. Francie spots Loving John (May Pang), and rushes to her, greedy for gossip. Loving John (May Pang) is everyone’s favorite, because she doesn’t really know anyone very well, but she knows how to make everyone feel comfortable by saying things that make sense in the moment.
Living the Beatles Legend: The Mal Evans Story (Ken Womack) ends up taking her home; they both live at The Fringes. Her home is a little further than his, which is just this side of Weird whereas she’s all the way in Montauk, but he’ll make sure she gets there safely.
To make up for the disappearance of your crush, Remember (Mike McCartney) cuts your hair. Each snip of the scissors slots a black-and-white picture into your field of vision. Windows in time blow noise and heat in your face, and visions of a screaming band that looks a bit like the young Beatles. Then there’s the quiet heat of summer, towels rippling on the line, and a drain pipe screwed to the wall of a house. He talks about childhood, and you’re almost there, but you never will be, because he won’t let you in. His more verbose twin, The Macs (Mike McCartney), recites letters his brother and John wrote from Hamburg, but you can barely understand what he says, because he stuffed a tissue into his mouth.
“It’s only a story,” says The Lyrics (Paul McCartney). “Pleased to meet you. I’m a storyteller myself.” He sings a love song. “I must have thought about these things when I wrote it,” he muses. “Interesting. What a mind, as Linda used to say.”
He tears a few pages from a diary he kept in Paris in 1961 and hands them to you without comment.
At this point, the party is dissolving. Crocheted furniture floats away and stretches.
“Am I too late?” Skywriting by Word of Mouth (John Lennon) squeezes himself out of the lowest drawer of an antique desk, where, judging from by his crinkly pajamas, he slept. “I’m in pieces. Mend me with glue.”
“I will, I will!” Tune In—All These Years, Vol I (Mark Lewisohn) yells ecstatically. “I’m so glad you could make it Sit down with me and celebrate the heritage of Liverpool.”
Skywriting drapes himself around Tune In, who starts purring and rutting against him.
“Excuse me?” It’s The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story (Vivek Tiwary), torero boots clicking on the invisible floor as he strides towards the couch. A spotlight follows him. “I’m managing this show, and I insist on expanding the scene.” Around them, a hotel room forms.
Skywriting lights a cigarette. “Join us in bed, Bri.”
“Yes,” moans Tune In. “I’m so lonely. I’m the oldest of a triplet, or so they say, but the other two haven’t been born yet.”
The Fifth Beatle sits down and observes the unhinged biography losing himself in the friction of rubbing against the shapeshifting Skywriting. Finally, things reach a conclusion.
“And so,” says The Fifth Beatle, “what partially was, finished.”
“Stop repeating lines from a bad movie, Brian," says Skywriting, "you’re better than that.”
As you try to plot ways to escape through the skylight, The McCartney Legacy, Vol 1 (Sinclair & Kozinn) slides out from under the bed, a broad-shouldered lady in a bright red dress. A half-hatched alien with long legs and sunglasses squirms between her breasts, and makes mouth percussion sounds.
“Gentlemen.” The McCartney Legacy retrieves a very, very long rosary from her pocket. “Is anyone interested in an exquisitely crafted, finely wrought chronology?”
At the sound of the word “chronology,” The Beatles (Hunter Davies) crashes through the ceiling.
“Don’t fall for it!” The Beatles snatches the vocalizing baby alien from The McCartney Legacy’s chest, and kills it by wringing its neck. “Time stopped in 1968. The only valid extension are my own salacious additions. Strictly off the record.”
“I’ve been meaning to talk to you about that,” says The Fifth Beatle.
You exchange a glance with Skywriting, who is plucking pieces of Tune In from his body like children snatch pieces of dough, and sticking them in his mouth.
A camera clicks.
“Excellent.”
The Eyes of the Storm (Paul McCartney) lowers the camera, and changes into a suntanned, gleaming likeness of George Harrison. Then he changes into a fish.
“Everyone looking at the pictures will think they know,” the fish says. “They’ll have no idea!”
The floor dissolves under you. You fall into a pool, just in time to save your crush from being sucked into the drain, and after a barely audible edit you find yourself back home, with no memories at all, the taste of chewing gum in your mouth, and wearing matching tops saying, I visited Fellini’s Satyricon, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt. (ETA: I can't believe I forgot about Dreaming the Beatles (Rob Sheffield). I guess I'll have to include him in the inevitable sequel to this...thing, as the +1 of John and Paul: A Love Story in Songs (Ian Leslie).)

“At 2 Cor 12:7, Paul tells the Corinthian church, “I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me.” The Greek word translated as “torment” in this passage, is the same word used at Mark 14:65 and Matt 26:67 to describe Jesus being blindfolded and violently and repeatedly punched with closed fists before His crucifixion. And the Greek word translated as “messenger,” is the same word used throughout the Bible for “angel.”
I think it’s difficult for some people to come to terms with what Paul is telling us in this passage: God Himself sent an angel of Satan to inflict continuous discomfort and distress, along with waves of suffering and humiliation, and when Paul asked to be delivered from it, God said no.
Almost all the main translations, except the NASB, translate the Lord’s response to Paul thusly: “My grace is sufficient, for My power is perfected in weakness.” However, there is no first-person possessive pronoun for “power” in the original text of this verse. There is only the definitive adjective article, “the.” So what the Lord actually said was: “My grace is sufficient, for the power is perfected in weakness.” And even though this may seem like a minor discrepancy, it makes all the difference in understanding His response correctly.
I think many people misunderstand this verse by assuming that at some point, in their weakness, God will hand over His power so they can wield it unto victory over their circumstances. But the power our Lord speaks of in this verse— “the power” being perfected in our weakness—is the power of His cross. At 1 Cor 1:18, Paul tells the Corinthians that the “word of the cross is… the power of God” to those who are being saved. He tells the Romans that the gospel “is the power of God for salvation.” The power of the cross is encapsulated in the words of Job, who experienced his own tormenting messenger of Satan: “Even though He slay me, yet I will trust in Him.”
That is because the word of a Roman cross was death. A cross slays a man. The power of the cross prevails when the weakness of the man hanging on it is at its fullest— when the indignance that fueled each gasp of air to fight against death is gone, and the anger and rage at the injustice of it all, transform into tears of submission. Because even though He slay us, we trust in Him. We trust that He sees the thing in us that needs to be smitten by His cross, and we submit to it.
And then we rightly understand what He means when He says to us: “The power is perfected in weakness.”
(Job 42:5,6) My ears had heard of You, but now my eyes have seen You. Therefore, I find myself reprehensible, and I repent in embers and ashes”

what do ziolets wedding rings look like? are they personalized?
Hi anon (I know who you are for this one 😉), this is such a fun question to answer! I purposely have waited until now to post it because next Wednesday marks the anniversary of their second engagement!!!! Zach proposed to Violet for the second and final time on this day, September 4th, 10 years ago!!! And this post is a prelude to something I’ve been working on 😉. See the explanation of their rings below the cut!
Violet’s Ring
I actually have a very specific design in mind for Violet’s ring, and it is 100% personalized and handmade by Zach himself! This is a ring that’s hard for me to explain or show you all, but I hope this little fanfic excerpt and crudely drawn picture of the ring (made by me, lol) makes sense!
Tumblr media
“That’s not why I asked,” Zach began and huffed in aggravation, “argh…I need to be honest with you.”
He paused and started digging in his pants pocket for something, when he produced a small triangular box with a V on it I raised an eyebrow at him. He scooted the box to me, crossed his arms, and went back to looking out the window. I opened the box and found a small gold ring with a V in the shape of Zach’s logo. The V was encrusted with tiny rubies and diamonds.
I gently lifted the ring out of the box and examined it closer, engraved into the band on the inside was “All My Love, Vi - ZV.”The pang of remorse that hit me must have shown on my face, for Zach quietly said, in an apologetic voice, “I’m asking her to marry me.”
Cough cough anyone wanna guess who’s looking at the ring cough cough.
So…in short, the ring has a gold band and red rubies and diamonds on the base in the shape of Zach’s V logo, with the inscription, in his handwriting, “All My Love, Vi - ZV,” engraved into the inside metal of the band. It is worth noting that Violet only has one ring, this engagement ring that also serves as her wedding ring.
Zach’s Wedding Ring
Zach’s wedding ring is also unique and hand crafted! I feel like Violet had Donita help her design it, so it is also fully customized and personalized! Zach’s ring is a black titanium band with a bright red line going through the center of the ring, with the inside band of the ring having the same red lining (it looks very similar to the ring shown below ⬇️). Inside the ring is a personalized engraving from Violet, in her handwriting: “I'll forever love you, Zach - Violet.”
Tumblr media
The engraving is special because it’s a line from a song that’s highly symbolic in their relationship, a country song Zach tolerates because of it’s meaning to him and Violet 😂: Never, Ever, and Forever by Mark Wills and Lee Ann Womack.
youtube
I hope this all makes sense, thank you for the ask!

Ashley Puckett was born and raised in North Huntingdon, just east of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Ashley realized her passion for music at a young age, performing at vocal competitions and community events, and eventually, landing at open-mic nights and shows in bars and clubs, doing anything to keep the music and her passion alive. Her musical influences have been empowering..shaping the artist she has become: Ladies like Lee Ann Womack, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Jo Dee Messina, Carol King and LeAnn Rimes. At age sixteen Ashley picked up the guitar, began writing songs, and the adventurous country girl hit the road.
"I've never given up on where I wanted to be (in the music industry), however, when life pulls you in so many different directions, it sometimes takes you off-guard, and it becomes very easy to lose sight. I believe everything happens for a reason, and although I feel I'm always at the wrong place at the wrong time, somehow that led me to the right place at the right time, to say ‘It's now or never’ after meeting Bryan and Doug. The energy the three of us have, working together, and their dedication is so exciting...I know this is just the beginning of something spectacular."
Her single, “Bulletproof” was released on January 9th, 2020, Ashley’s birthday. The song raced to the top of the iTunes country singles chart in South Africa, also becoming a #1 radio hit on the New Music Weekly country chart. New single, “What’s Her Name” is being released on March 25th, 2022.

Chicago Fest for Beatles Fans 2023
I've always loved connecting with people who share my passions. For me, cons aren't about meeting celebrities or room parties, though those are both fine. For me, it's about meeting people whose eyes don't glaze over after thirty seconds of your special interest. So when I began my deep dive into Beatlemania, I wanted to find people who really wanted to chat. (Some of you have witnessed these efforts here, to varying degrees of success.) So I googled "Beatles conventions" and, on a whim, bought a ticket to the Fest for Beatles Fans in Chicago, partly because I had someone to stay with (over an hour away, but still) and didn't need to shell out for a room.
If my goal was to engineer a feeling like, say, my best one on one convos here, or the Meta the Beatles discord, or old school livejournal, or the K/S cons, it was only marginally successful. Still, I think it was a positive experience and I am considering attempting to afford the next one in February at the utterly stunning remodeled TWA hotel.
The Fest, which used to be called BeatleFest until Apple Corps intervened in 1997, has been ongoing since 1974 when founder Mark Lapidos asked John Lennon if he was cool with the idea of a Beatles convention. You can see various guests over the years here, so clearly it's a known quantity in Beatledom. Many people there this weekend have been attending since the beginning, and it's an annual (or bi-annual) tradition.
It differs from other fan cons I've been to in that the focus is largely on music itself. This is natural, but what I mean is, there is constantly at least one musical act playing Beatles music in some form. On the main stage and breakout rooms you also have guests: Pattie Boyd, Gregg Bissonette (Ringo's current drummer), Billy J Kramer, Terry Sylvester (the Hollies), Joey Molland (Badfinger), Jay Bergen (John's lawyer), Allan Kozinn (The McCartney Legacy), Bruce Spizer (various books about the recordings), Kenneth Womack (upcoming Mal Evans book!), Susan Ryan (long time Fest fixture and historian), Skylar Moody (Beatles TikTok), Jude Kessler (The John Lennon series), Sara Schmidt (Meet the Beatles for Real), Steve Matteo (Act Naturally: the Beatles on Film). There are dealers with vintage and current merch and memorabilia, a "museum" room with historic merch, old clippings, an "ashram" where you can attend various meditation and yoga sessions, a karaoke room, costume and talent contests, even a Beatles Rock Band setup I failed to attend despite my yearning to one day play it.
Some of the panels were pretty sparsely attended, and there was a strong feeling that a lot of people go to listen to the bands and stay up all night. But what that meant for those of us who were there to talk and make connections was, I got to talk and make a ton of connections. I met Sara Schmidt and her mother and they took me under their wing and introduced me to anyone who was anyone. I had a lovely chat with Ken Womack. Wally Podrazik insisted on taking a photo of my Nerk Twins shirt and demanded I email him. I spoke to Allan Kozinn about how a John boy comes to write the most comprehensive Paul biography ever. I met a lady named Tina who is going to hook me up with info about early slash and RPF fic (because I've heard several of you youngin's declare it's a relatively new phenomenon and I know it isn't!). I danced to a great cover band while looking like Twiggy. I had a lot of comments about my Stamp Out the Beatles shirt. I spoke to Steve Matteo about his book about the Beatles on film, and shared my own film work in which he took an avid interest.
All in all, it never got as in depth as you can with good fandom friends in a quiet setting. I've also heard that attendance and quality have gone down in recent years, and changes have been implemented due to stupid copyright shit (like, no being able to show any of the licensed films or cartoons? Which is a huge bummer.). But I do feel that I made connections and furthermore, felt embraced and included and warmly welcomed. No one questioned the fact I got here via "Get Back," no one challenged me on being new, no one made any attempt to gatekeep or Beatle bro at me. Only ONE person even asked who my favorite Beatle was. They all seemed genuinely delighted to have a new weirdo to share their passion with.
I haven't decided if I'm attending again, but I do already have plans in the works to suggest a few panels more in line with the type of con activity I like to see. Because even if it's not exactly the interactions I've been seeking, there's no substitute for face to face discussion and squee. And now, my photos!

15 "Independence day" - Martina McBride
writer Gretchen Peters
"Today is a day of reckoning. Let the weak be strong, let the right be wrong. Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay."
Part of the UncoolTwo50 project, marking the best singles from 1977-99.
Behind the scenes, I've got a spreadsheet to fuel the rankings. It is amongst the best written songs? Does the singer convey emotion? Their message? Is it technically great? Do I feel the need to sing along to the hooks? Airplay counts positively, lack of sales drags a song back, seeding from the original #Uncool50 helps. There are penalties for being below another song from the same year, or another song in the same genre; a bonus if the song is not in English. And I consider whether the performer is a woman, or Black, or both; and how well it fits with my personal headspace.
The spreadsheet is a guide; there's a final "manual adjustment" factor to stop me presenting too many non-hits / songs from 1989 in a row. Or, in this case, so that I don't present this song at 7am on the morning after the Yankee election. That would be tempting fate too much.

"Independence day" is about a woman taking revenge on an abusive man. One of the most striking points is how it doesn't lay blame exclusively on the abusive husband and father; no, we're also reminded of the responsibility shared by friends and townsfolk who whispered and talked and always looked the other way. "Independence day" challenges its listener to be a more caring and courageous person, to remember that there is such a thing as society.

Won the Country Music Association song of the year for 1994, and nominated for Grammy song of the year. Adopted as a theme song by far-right blowhard Sean Hannity; songwriter Gretchen Peters couldn't stop him from playing the tune, she could donate her royalties to Planned Parenthood and annoy Hannity.
Martina McBride went on to be the first lady of country music in the aughts. Gretchen Peters became a regular visitor to these shores until a farewell tour last year, having been championed by Richard Allison and Terry Wogan on Radio 2; I also considered Faith Hill's rendition of Gretchen's song "The secret of life".
Country music is another blind spot for me, though the brief flowering of women's country in the late 90s piqued my attention. Lee Ann Womack was considered for "A little past Little Rock", and Shania Twain for the original version of "When". And the Chicks for "There's your trouble"; my sweetheart Jaeda was excited to see them when she first crossed my path, and this one's for you with love.

“”This morning in my barn I prayed, “Increase my capacity to know You.” I told God that I longed to be a deep well, that I longed for Him to increase my capacity for Him. And the Spirit communicated, “Are you willing....?” In that moment He gave me understanding that longing is not willingness.
He helped me see the error we often make by assuming that our longing for something equates to our willingness to actually pursue it. You see, there was a time in my life that I longed to quit drinking, but for a long time I wasn’t willing. I longed to know God, but for a long time I wasn’t willing to read my Bible. God’s work in us is a symbiotic relationship between longing and willingness. The longing in you for the things of God is a sign of your salvation, it is a witness to the presence of the Holy Spirit in you, because none of us have a natural desire for such things. Our natural desires are selfish, because the natural man is still in bondage to Self.
Through our faith in the cross of Jesus Christ—the crucifixion of His flesh as payment for sin— we are willingly placing Self on that cross to be crucified too. Self joins Christ in that death and we become a new creation that is raised to new life. But our subsequent spiritual growth, the progressive sanctification of our consciousness and being, happens through experience. God uses the circumstances of our life to teach us how to live as that new creation. How to live in increasing willingness to be utterly and completely surrendered to our Creator— to truly live under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Thus, the longing is present because of His Spirit. But He continues to ask, “Are you willing...?”
Little by little, circumstance by circumstance, He shapes us and molds us as we consciously and willingly give ourselves over to Him more and more. This is what Paul means when he tells us to work out our salvation with fear and trembling (Phil 2:12). This is what Paul is talking about when he says, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life” (Eph 2:10).
This morning when I asked God to increase my capacity for Him and He asked me, “Are you willing...?” I paused.
I paused because I am a woman who is intimately familiar with the severity of God. I love Him but I fear Him. So I whispered, “Yes my Lord, I am willing, but I also pray that You will make me able.” To be a deep well requires digging, and sometimes God’s hands can be excruciating. There is displacement that takes place when you dig, because spiritual transactions cost a pound of flesh. To have more of Him, means there must be less of you.
(Phil 2:12,13) Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now even more in my absence, continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God who works in you to will and to act on behalf of His good purpose.
(Mark 9:23,24) “If You can?” echoed Jesus. “All things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the boy’s father cried out, “I do believe; help my unbelief!”
(John 3:30) He must increase, but I must decrease.
(Rom 6:16-18) Do you not know that when you offer yourselves as obedient slaves, you are slaves to the one you obey, whether you are slaves to sin leading to death, or to obedience leading to righteousness? But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.””
