[DESIGN STUDIO] In February 2024, the Valparaíso Metropolitan Area was devastated by a major wildfire that impacted five municipalities—Valparaíso, Viña del Mar, Quilpué, Villa Alemana, and Limache. The fire consumed over 8,500 hectares and destroyed approximately 10,000 homes. Viña del Mar was particularly hard-hit, with nearly one-third of its total area affected, primarily in urban-rural and urban-forest interface zones. These zones, marked by abandoned forestry activities and informal urbanization, underscore significant challenges in achieving sustainable and resilient urban and territorial planning. In response, the urban design studio "Barrio y Policentrismo Urbano" at EAD-PUCV, led by Álvaro Mercado and Mía Carrere in the first semester of 2024, developed a series of Master Plans. These plans envision the socio-ecological urban transition of the urban-rural and urban-forest interface zones, which are characterized by deep ravines prone to frequent wildfires that represent substantial risks to both human and non-human communities.

What a weekend! I'm home from the 2024 JUNO awards in Halifax and my hamstrings are still recovering from the enormous hill that Halifax is built into... but it was an incredible experience! The red carpets, the awards dinner, the broadcast, and more - it's a surreal experience to be in a room with hundreds of other people knowing that every single of them is an absolute badass on stage, while simultaneously being such a wonderful experience when there's not an ego in the room - everyone, big and small, came to the table friendly, open, and supportive. It was both inspiring and heart warming.
Nick Maclean Quartet feat. BROWNMAN ALI didn't win our category, but I'm very honoured to have lost to Hilario Duran and his Latin Big Band, who's Grammy-nominated record "Cry Me A River" is just spectacular! In fact I'd have felt honoured to lose to any of the giants who were nominated alongside us in our category - I was surrounded by my heroes and mentors. Heros like:
Hilario Duran & His Latin Big Band - "Cry Me A River" Allison Au & The Migrations Ensemble - "Migrations" Canadian Jazz Collective - "Septology" Mike Murley & Mark Eisenman Quartet - "Recent History"
I had an enormous amount of fun catching up with folks I haven't seen in ages like Noam Lemish, Mike Murley, Denielle Bassels, Caity Gyorgy, Levi Dover, Jenna Marie, and Andrew Jackson.
As well as meeting or reconnecting with new friends like Allison Au, Jocelyn Gould, Laila Biali-Wittman, Hilario Duran, Ben Wittman, Jon Maharaj, Will Bonness, Iman Habibi, Ewen Farncombe, Alex Bird, Mark Limacher, Markus Floats, James Goddard, Jhamiela Smith, and Begonia.
And I know I'm forgetting tons of people because the weekend was more than a bit of a whirlwind!
It was so good to spend lots of time with my bandmates Brownman Ali & Jacob Wutzke (Ben Duff we missed you buddy!), and my amazing wife Erin Brooks who was our on-the-ground publicist! ---- Please check out our JUNO-nominated record, we put a lot of ourselves into it! https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_k8a0AJeeXYIVCwLJs6fa9EkRErdSLo9bs NICK MACLEAN QUARTET feat. Therapeutic HPV Vaccine Can Trigger Resolution of Virus and Cervical Cancer in Some CIN Patients
MedicalResearch.com Interview with:
Dr. Harper Diane Harper, M.D., M.P.H., M.S. Professor of Family Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology Senior Associate Director, Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research Physician Director for Community Outreach, Engagement and Health Disparities, Rogel Cancer Center Michigan Medicine MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? Response: There is no current cure for women with HPV infection that has progressed to CIN 2/3 disease. The only treatment is for the diseased cervix, and does not eliminate the risk of another CIN 2/3 from the HPV infection 15-20 years later. This vaccine is made from a live virus that has 3 genes inserted: human cytokine IL-2, and modified forms of HPV 16 E6 and E7 proteins. When the vaccine is injected subcutaneously, the proteins for HPV 16/E6 and E7 and the cytokine LI-2 proteins are made. These proteins trigger the immune response. This is very different form imiquimod which is topical and not specific for HPV. MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings? The therapeutic vaccine causes complete resolution of both HPV and CIN 3 in about a third of women The therapeutic vaccine is twice as effective as placebo MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report? Response: This is a significant advance towards developing a solution for women infected with HPV that has progressed to CIN 2/3 disease that can be done by a advanced provider practitioner or primary care physician and may not require a surgery that can cause reproductive morbidities. MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work? Response: We know that the HPV circular DNA is broken in many places to insert into the human genome and that the place of insertion in the human genome is quite varied. Future research could look at mechanisms for identifying these insertion sites so that they can be targeted to disrupt continued replication of the oncogenes. MedicalResearch.com: Is there anything else you would like to add? Response: This could also be an adjunct to other immune therapy for treatment of other HPV associated cancers, including head /neck as well as anal cancers where surgeries are so disfiguring. Citation: Diane M. Harper, Pekka Nieminen, Gilbert Donders, Mark H. Einstein, Francisco Garcia, Warner K. Huh, Mark H. Stoler, Katerina Glavini, Gemma Attley, Jean-Marc Limacher, Berangere Bastien, Elizabeth Calleja. The efficacy and safety of Tipapkinogen Sovacivec therapeutic HPV vaccine in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grades 2 and 3: Randomized controlled phase II trial with 2.5 years of follow-up. Sled picks: Thursday
A lot of the time, I find the best approach to Sled is to pick one must-see show for the night, and leave the rest more up to chance. That’s definitely the plan today—weather, moods, and friends’ migratory patterns will all play a role. But here’s the general idea:
Afternoon at the NMC: The artist talk with Simeon of Silver Apples at noon should be fascinating (I’m biased, since I’m hosting it), and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith’s workshop/presentation at 1pm is one of my most anticipated moments of the fest. If you can take a long lunch, do.
Broken City Patio, 5pm-7:30pm: If it’s sunny out, a set of psych-rock and dream-pop from Pontiex and Hush Pup on BC’s rooftop patio sounds just about perfect, and Atlaas’ electro-r&b should be worth lingering for.
Central United Church, 6:30pm: On the other hand, if the gloom sticks around, Kris Ellestad’s set at Central United feels like the better way to go. On top of being one of Canada’s best singer-songwriters (no need to stick with the local qualifiers), he has an incredible voice that’s perfectly suited to church acoustics. If you were aiming for Waxahatchee anyway, show up early.
NMC Studio Bell, 8pm-11:30pm: I’m still kicking myself for missing Corinthian’s NMC residency performance with Mark Limacher the other month, but Sled’s giving a chance to make up for that, and I’m taking it. And Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith is worth seeing twice, when the opportunity presents itself.
???: Yves Tumor’s experimental electronics at Commonwealth? Colin Stetson’s metal band Ex Eye at the Palomino? Calgary favourites Lab Coast playing a feel-good set at Nite Owl? Plenty of options for capping off the night, and still 14 hours left to decide.
Bummed to be missing: Un Blonde’s last album was one of my favourites of 2016, low-key experimental, incredibly melodic and endlessly inventive. His Local 510 set should be a treat.
