Tributes paid to Emiliano Sala on the first anniversary of his death
Cardiff management, players and supporters have paid tribute  to Emiliano Sala on the first anniversary of the striker’s death.
The Argentinian forward died on January 21, 2019 when the plane carrying him from Nantes in France to his new club Cardiff crashed in the English Channel near Guernsey.
The footballer’s body was recovered from the wreckage, but pilot David Ibbotson, from Crowle, North Lincolnshire, has still not been found.
Cardiff manager Neil Harris was among those to attend a service dedicated to Emiliano Sala and David Ibbotson at St David’s Cathedral, Cardiff (Jacob King/PA)
Bluebirds manager Neil Harris, captain Sean Morrison and Sol Bamba were among those to attend a dedication service to Sala and Ibbotson at St David’s Cathedral in Cardiff city centre on Tuesday afternoon.
Supporters arrived at the Cardiff City Stadium throughout the morning to pay tribute to Sala.
Fans left flowers, banners and shirts in memory of Sala, who was unveiled as a Cardiff player two days before his death.
One tribute read: “We never saw you play and we never saw you score but Emiliano our beautiful Bluebird we will love you forever more.”

A floral tribute quoted Sala’s own words, saying: “I know the challenge is big but together we will make it.” The message added: “Forever in our hearts.”
An Argentinian flag was laid next to the Fred Keenor Statue, with the name ‘Sala’ written on it.
Cardiff expressed their sympathy to the friends and family of Sala on their official website.
“All of our thoughts are with the family and friends of Emiliano Sala and (pilot) David Ibbotson,” said a Cardiff club statement on behalf of the owner Vincent Tan and the board.

“The pain they have been through over the last 12 months must be indescribable.
“To mark the anniversary we are welcoming supporters to lay floral tributes at the Fred Keenor Statue throughout the day.”
Sala’s family will mark the anniversary of the striker’s death in “private, quiet contemplation of their loss”, their British lawyer has said.
“The Sala family will mark the anniversary of the untimely death of Emiliano in private, quiet contemplation of their loss,” Daniel Machover, of Hickman & Rose solicitors, and representing the family, said in a statement.

“The family’s primary concern remains for the full inquest to take place as soon as possible, so that they can finally learn the truth about what happened and ensure that no family has to suffer a similar preventable loss of a loved one.
“Therefore, in the run-up to the pre-inquest review hearing on 16 March 2020, it is imperative that the coroner receives by 14 February 2020 (and then promptly shares with the family) the update required by the coroner from all investigating bodies – the police, CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) and AAIB (Air Accidents Investigation Branch)
“The CAA in particular must speed up its work.”
Sala’s father Horacio died three months after his son, suffering a heart attack at his home in Progreso.
But he said before his death that all parties involved in the transfer – including clubs and agents – should have made more effort to look after the welfare of his son.
Sala was exposed to high levels of carbon monoxide prior to the crash, a report later revealed.

Cardiff, who were in the Premier League at the time, and Nantes have since been in dispute over fee payments.
The Welsh club unveiled Sala two days before his death, but have argued they were not liable for the full £15million transfer fee because the 28-year-old was not officially their player when he died.
The case was heard by FIFA’s players’ status committee, with the world governing body announcing at the end of September that Cardiff had been ordered to pay the first instalment of Sala’s transfer fee – six million euros (just under £5.2m).
Cardiff appealed against that ruling and it will go before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland. The final decision is not expected before June 2020.

Cardiff decided not to hold an official vigil to mark the anniversary of Sala’s death, but said fans were welcome to lay tributes at the Fred Keenor statue during the day.
The statue was the spot where Cardiff fans laid floral tributes, scarves and shirts in memory of Sala last year.
Nantes, for whom Sala scored 42 goals in 120 league games during three-and-a-half years at the club, will wear a special commemorative shirt at the Ligue 1 home game against Bordeaux on Sunday.
“Because he dreamed of the Albiceleste (Argentina national team), the players will swap their yellow shirt for one inspired by his home country,” Nantes said on their official club website.
Combattant et généreux, tu rêvais et méritais le maillot de l’Albiceleste. L’intégralité des bénéfices liés aux ventes de ce maillot sera allouée aux deux clubs formateurs argentins d’Emiliano.

“All the proceeds from sales of this shirt will be allocated to the two Argentinian clubs (Club San Martin de Progreso and Proyecto Crecer) where Emiliano began his career.”
Nantes, who have already retired Sala’s number nine shirt, will unveil a canvas of him in the centre-circle before kick-off against Bordeaux, another of his former clubs, while a special fan banner and a minute’s applause is also planned.

Premier League title race becomes a two-horse race between Liverpool and Man City after Spurs loss
It lasted until the end of February and a week before Shrove Tuesday, but in the end the race for 2018- Liverpool Liverpool FC Liverpool FC Liverpool FC Liverpool FC Liverpool FC Liverpool FC Manchester City escaped from West Ham's visit with three points thanks to a Sergio Aguero punishment
Tottenham & # 39; s challenge may have gone up in smoke after back-to-back league defeats

Tottenham's challenge finally seemed to disappear, the comedic Kieran Trippier's own goal condemned them to a second defeat in a row, leaving nine points behind Liverpool's leaders with 10 games to play.
After returning to the top on Sunday, it was a must-win game for Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, if only to arrest a form of run that had won three victories in nine in 2019.
Liverpool responded in style. & # 39; That was not fun at all. It was dog *** t … & # 39 ;, Ben Foster discussed afterwards.
The evening started with some alarm Jurgen Klopp mentioned a shaken front three for only the fourth time in the league this season.
& # 39; It was our first idea & # 39 ;, said Klopp.
Surprisingly, Sadio Mane started in the middle, with Divock Origi – a replacement for the injured Roberto Firmino – to the left. & # 39; We need someone who can work in small spaces, give something behind you and with speed.
& # 39; Sadio played many positions in his career – also for us – so we knew he could do well. & # 39;
And so it turned out.
And so it turned out. The Senegalese continued their rich form to give the Reds an early lead and doubled his palmares with a sensational back-heeled finish of 12 meters out – a goal that would prefer a five-after-one Powerleague match than Anfield.
19 March: Fulham A
19 March: Everton A
19 March: Burnley H
The returning Trent Alexander-Arnold
The returning Trent Alexander-Arnold was instrumental and provided both goals for Mane and the fourth for Virgil van Dijk.
He demonstrated the wonders of a right back that can produce pinpoint delivery, after James Milner's struggles at Old Trafford on the weekend.
Origi made the most of his chance to make a living change and shoot his third night from home.
After admitting five in their previous three, Liverpool has now registered four clean sheets in a row. The basis on which their title roll has been built is returning.
& # 39; You look at one loss in 28 they have already played their main rivals from home, and the way they sent Watford today was quite extensive.
& # 39; I feel that my money is safe. Ian Wright on 19459053
It turned out to be a frustrating opening 45 minutes for the champions in the Etihad Stadium
March 19: Fulham A
April 19: Cardiff H
April 19: Crystal Palace A
Benjamin Mendy was a joyous sight on the bench for Pep Guardiola – for only the second time since the turn of the year.
City monopolized the ball in the first half, at one point West Ham had seen only 19 percent of it. But they managed to create very little with it.
Guardiola left it for 10 minutes until after rest before sending reinforcements. Within four minutes after the arrival of Raheem Sterling, and then Bernardo Silva, City was ahead of the penalty by Sergio Aguero.
The awarding of the spot kick itself was debatable when Silva stumbled under pressure from Felipe Anderson.
It was wow, that was what I thought it would be a little generous & # 39; – but there was no doubt about the injection of directness that the West Ham defenders were clambering . far from beautiful Guardiola's side in their first league game since the 6-0 demolition of Chelsea 17 days ago. But what a time to produce only your second 1-0 victory of the competition.
Guardiola continued to spin after the last whistle: "It was a very difficult result, but the execution was incredible.
& # 39; We had one or two in the first five minutes that the game had been completely different, but we did very well.
] & # 39; The game became a bit flat. We started the second half very well. We have not scored enough goals to make the last 15 to 20 minutes a bit more relaxed. & # 39;
Harry Kane seemed to lose his rag and was fortunate not to send him off at Stamford Bridge Tottenham failed to record a shot on goal in the Premier League for the first time since 2013
I experienced how competitive these matches are and Kane lost his composure with Cesar Azpilicueta in the first half, deliberately moving his head to the defender of Chelsea.
There seemed to be contact, but it does not matter how serious the contact was with Azpilicueta. Even if it was a headbutt attempt, it still has the same penalty – a red card.
The incident seemed to be missed by the match officials and the FA could now take action back against Kane. [1945905] [1945905]
[1945905] [1945905] the home of one of their biggest rivals. & # 39; We have not photographed & # 39 ;, Mauricio Pochettino admitted.
Indeed he was right, for the first time under his tenure and since December 2013, they failed to register a shot on target in the Premier League.
Kieran Trippier & # 39; s mix with Hugo Lloris for Chelsea & # 39; s second, after Pedro opened the score, summed up an evening to forget about Spurs.
19 March: Liverpool A
19 March: Arsenal H
: Brighton H
April 19: Huddersfield H
The return of Harry Kane has failed to take them to new heights and they now have back-to-back back defeats.
Kane was off the pace and nearly lost his rag.
Tottenham has performed remarkably to make it deep in the title race, he seemed to want to beat Cesar Azpilicueta in the first half and was caught in a late confusion with David Luiz. Unless they can win on both Anfield and Etihad even though their race is over.
Could their top four spot now also be threatened? They organize Arsenal in Wembley on Saturday, where a third consecutive loss would leave the Gunnners just one point behind.
Pochettino did not worry: & # 39; I'm not afraid. I have freedom in my mind.
& # 39; After two defeats, maybe we are not and not satisfied, but I'm not sure what to do, but we have to go ahead and try to be ready for the next game. But it is not a drama. & # 39;

Injured Joe Ledley and Tom Lockyer out of Wales squad against Spain and Republic
Friendly: Wales v Spain Venue: Cardiff City Stadium Date: Thursday, 11 October Kick-off: 19:45 BST Coverage: Live on BBC Radio 5 live, Radio Wales and Radio Cymru, the BBC Sport website and BBC Sport app, plus live text commentary.
Wales manager Ryan Giggs has made two changes to a 25-man squad for the friendly against Spain on 11 October and the Nations League match with Republic of Ireland five days later.
Joe Ledley and Tom Lockyer have withdrawn injured, with Jazz Richards and George Thomas replacing them.
Leicester City forward Thomas, 21, could win his first competitive cap after impressing for the Under-21s.
Wales play Spain at the Principality Stadium and the Republic in Dublin.
Derby County’s 77-cap midfielder Ledley, 31, was an unused substitute in Wales’ 4-1 win over the Republic[1] in their Nations League opener in Cardiff on 6 September, as was Bristol Rovers defender Lockyer, 23.
Cardiff full-back Richards, 27, won the last of his 13 Wales caps in the World Cup qualifier against Austria in September 2017.
Thomas scored twice for Wales Under-21s against Liechtenstein last month and is currently on loan at Scunthorpe United.
Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale has been included despite missing the midweek Champions League defeat at CSKA Moscow through injury.
Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey, who was given special dispensation to miss his side’s Europa League appointment with Qarabag on Thursday as his wife is expecting twins, is also included.
The friendly against Spain will be the first time Wales have played at the Principality Stadium since March 2011 when they lost 2-0 to England.
They have not faced Spain since a 3-0 win in a World Cup qualifier at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground in April 1985, in which Mark Hughes scored with a spectacular scissor kick.
Wales squad:
Wayne Hennessey (Crystal Palace), Danny Ward (Leicester City), Adam Davies (Barnsley).
Ashley Williams (Stoke City, on loan from Everton), James Chester (Aston Villa), Ben Davies (Tottenham Hotspur), Chris Gunter (Reading), Connor Roberts (Swansea City), Christopher Mepham (Brentford), Jazz Richards (Cardiff City), Ethan Ampadu (Chelsea), Paul Dummett (Newcastle United), Declan John (Swansea City).
Joe Allen (Stoke City), Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal), Andy King (Leicester City), David Brooks (Bournemouth), Matthew Smith (FC Twente, on loan from Manchester City).
Gareth Bale (Real Madrid), Ben Woodburn (Sheffield United, on loan from Liverpool), Harry Wilson (Derby County, on loan from Liverpool), Tom Lawrence (Derby County), Sam Vokes (Burnley), George Thomas (Scunthorpe United, on loan from Leicester City), Tyler Roberts (Leeds United).

9TH OF APRIL IN ARSENAL HISTORY....... On this day in 1892 Royal Arsenal's friendly at the Invicta Ground was against South Shore FC (amalgamated with Blackpool FC in 1899). Gavin Crawford got the goal that earned the Royals a 1-1 draw. Woolwich Arsenal had a break from Division 3 fixtures today in 1894 and had a friendly at Manor Field against Sheffield United. They failed to score and were beaten 0-1 by the Blades. The Manor Ground played host to Darwen today in 1898 for their Division 2 match with Woolwich Arsenal. With James Brock scoring twice and Adam Haywood getting on the scoresheet it finished 3-1 to the Gunners. Woolwich Arsenal's fixture at Loftus Road today in 1900 was against Queens Park Rangers in the Southern District Combination League. This league only lasted one season and consisted of nine teams; Bristol City, Chatham, Millwall Athletic, Portsmouth, Queens Park Rangers, Reading, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and Woolwich Arsenal. In this match Woolwich Arsenal were unable to score and Rangers won 3-0. Today in 1904 was a crunch mate in Plumstead. Woolwich Arsenal faced Preston North End with the two teams locked in a battle for top spot in Division 2 and promotion. 28,000 fans packed the ground but neither side made any strides for the title as it ended in a 0-0 draw. Thomas Shanks played his final match for the club. He was signed from Brentford in 1903 by manager Harry Bradshaw and played a total of 48 matches in his one season in at Woolwich Arsenal. He was instrumental in this season in gaining the club promotional being the first of two players to achieve over 20 goal in a season. His 24 goals in 30 league matches helped immensely and that season the club were undefeated at home and made into the top flight for the first time in their history. He was sold back to Brentford however in the summer to ease the club's financial concerns. Woolwich Arsenal were in north London at White Hart Lane to play in the Southern Professional Charity Cup (a competition which lasted from 1901 until 1908). This semi-final ended 0-0 so the match would have to be replayed. In a friendly at the Manor Ground today in 1909 the opponents were Exeter City. Albert Beney converted a penalty and Sam Raybould scored but Woolwich Arsenal lost 2-3 to the Grecians. Neither team could find the back of the net in Plumstead today in 1910 so 0-0 it finished between Woolwich Arsenal and Bury. Bill Buckenham made the final appearance of his one season with the club. He played 21 times scored 5 times and in the summer he transferred to Southampton. Goalkeeper George Marks (picture top left) was born today in 1915 in Fighaldean, Wiltshire, England. He signed for Arsenal as an amateur in 1936 from Salisbury Corinthians and then spent two years on loan at Arsenal's nursery club Margate. He returned to play twice for the first team before the outbreak of World War II. His second appearance was the match against Brentford which was used in the film 'The Arsenal Stadium Mystery'. He played in 129 wartime matches for the club but when the league resumed he was sold to Blackburn Rovers for £5,000 in 1946. In the London Combination League today in 1917 Arsenal beat their bitter north London rivals 3-2. Wartime guests Cockerill, Sanderson and Wilkins got the goals. On a poignant note, former Arsenal player Spencer Bassett (picture top right) was killed fighting for his country on this date in 1917 during the First World War. He signed for the club from Maidstone in 1906 and the right half signed his professional papers in 1907. He was used regularly for the reserves in the South Eastern League but only made one senior appearance against Notts County in September of 1909. He left in 1910 and played for Exeter City and Swansea Town before signing up at the outbreak of the war. On this day in 1921 Arsenal took on Bradford Park Avenue at Highbury. They edged a 2-1 win with goals from Jackie Rutherford and Joseph Toner in front of 30,000 fans. Wing half Arthur Shaw (picture bottom left) was born today in 1924 in Limehouse, East London. He signed for Arsenal from Brentford in 1948 and made his debut in 1949 against Chelsea. he played a total of 61 matches and helped Arsenal to the league title in the 1952/1953 season. He also played regularly in the reserves in the Football Combination aswell before eventually being sold to Watford in 1955. Shaw was one of the players named in the South Wales Football Echo & Express article that claimed that Arsenal players had, in their match against Cardiff City in 1949 returned to the pitch for the second half, smoking cigarettes. Arsenal strongly denied the claim, so much so that they took legal action against the paper. Three days after beating Newcastle United 1-6 Arsenal were at Roker Park today in 1927 to take on Sunderland. James Shaw scored for the Gunners but in a show of inconsistency which apparently left manager Herbert Chapman 'lost for words' arsenal lost the match 5-1. The venue on this day in 1928 was Ninian Park. Reg Tricker got both goals in Arsenal's 2-2 draw with Cardiff City. Joe Hulme got the Gunners' goal today in 1930. The match ended in a 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough at Ayresome Park. Defeat for Arsenal today in 1932 at Anfield. Jack Lambert scored but Liverpool won the match 2-1. Debutante Gordon Bremner scored the only goal of the match today in 1938 at Elland Road so arsenal got a 0-1 victory over Leeds United. After signing from Cartha Athletic in 1937 Bremner's Arsenal career was interrupted by the second world war. he played 22 times during the war but his official statistics are 15 matches and 4 goals for the first team. He like George Marks mentioned earlier also appeared in the match that was filmed for 'The Arsenal Stadium Mystery' movie. After leaving the army in 1946 Bremner was sold to Motherwell for £2,750. In 1943 this date saw the death of Liverpool born former Arsenal goalkeeper James Ashcroft (picture bottom middle) who made 303 appearances for the Gunners. Ashcroft signed in 1900 from Gravesend United. In the 1901/1902 season he kept 17 clean sheets in 34 matches including a club record run of 6 consecutive blockouts (a record only matched by Alex Manninger in 1998). He left to join Blackburn Rovers in 1908. At Highbury today in 1949 Arsenal scraped a 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough courtesy of a Doug Lishman goal. Blackpool were the visitors to Islington on this day in 1955. They had a disappointing day as Arsenal's Doug Lishman was on target again (twice) and Don roper scored for 3-0 gunners' win. Arsenal didn't play again on this date until they went to the Hawthorns in 1977. Malcolm Macdonald and Frank Stapleton took the cheers with their goals giving Arsenal a 0-2 win over West Bromwich Albion. On this day in 1980 Arsenal held the mighty Juventus to a 1-1 draw in the European Cup Winners Cup semi-final 1st leg thanks to an own goal. Would there be any joy in Italy in two weeks time? Today in 1983 Arsenal faced Coventry City at Highbury. Graham Rix on Tony Woodcock got the goals that gave Arsenal a 2-1 win over the Sky Blues. 21,174 spectators endured a 0-0 draw at Goodison Park today in 1984 between Everton and Arsenal. This date in 1988 Arsenal were at the Dell to play Southampton. A strike from Paul Davis and an own goal were still not enough and Southampton won the match 4-2. It was start of a long running notorious affair between Davis and Southampton's Glenn Cockerill. The Southampton man was alleged to have started racially abusing Davis and the whole thing boiled over in September this year when Paul Davis punched his abuser and was subsequently banned for nine matches. It was also a final appearance in this match for Steve Williams (picture bottom right). The boyhood Arsenal fan joined the club in 1984 when signed up by manager Don Howe. He played most often and most effectively in the central right midfield role and played 121 times for Arsenal and scored 5 times. He left for Luton Town in 1988 before ending his career at Exeter City under former Arsenal player Alan Ball. Arsenal were away to Southampton again on this date in 1991. on this occasion an Alan Smith goal nicked a point for the Gunners in a 1-1 draw. Into the Premier League era and Arsenal were doing things the hard way today in 2004 when they overturned a 2-1 deficit against Liverpool to maintain the unbeaten run with a 4-2 home win thanks to a hat-trick from Thierry Henry 31, 50, 78; and a goal from Robert Pires 49. At the Riverside Stadium on this day in 2005 the Gunners needed a 73rd minute (it's that man again) Robert Pires goal to beat Middlesbrough 0-1. In 2006 today Arsenal couldn't score and were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United at Old Trafford. Finally, 2007 on this date saw just over 52,000 watched a relatively boring 0-0 between the Gunners and Newcastle United at St. James Park.
