Final Thoughts: hearing and speaking

This coming Sunday we celebrate the 23rd Sunday of Ordinary Time. The language and the story support the conclusion that at one time the man was hearing-enabled and used a working vocabulary.  Had he been deaf from the beginning there would not have been a post-healing note: “he spoke plainly.” Which perhaps makes his situation even more poignant, one which calls out to our compassion. Welcome to my blog. Everyday I share my devotional. There will be one chapter of the Old Testament, a story from the New Testament, and a Psalm.

Exodus 8 - I've got an image for each plague. Today, Moses brings three plagues upon Egypt: first frogs, then gnat, and finally flies. I am intrigued by the sheer logic. First God makes the Nile run with blood. So then the frogs leave their river and swarm the nation. When God strikes them all down, they begin to rot, and then the nation is filled with gnats and flies.

Mark 7 - Jesus heals the daughter of the Phoenician woman. This is striking because it reminds us that Gentiles as well as Jews are included in the Covenant with God. Jesus tells her he must help Jewish people first, but the woman pleading for her child says that even dogs may eat the crumbs. Her faith includes her in the covenant.

Psalm 58 seems to go very well with the Old Testament lesson! It declares that God will judge the evildoers, and so He does so to Egypt.
