when i first got into les mis i was under the impression that enj and marius were best friends (blame my music teacher misremembering lol) and even though that might've been wrong i still think there's a lot of underutilized comedic value in their dynamic

HOWEVER, the Selina/Gary relationship is so deeply & obviously Akasha/Marius so that kinda fills me with joy and pain as well.

I do feel like, within the book, there's no reason at all why Enjolras wouldn't like Marius? Like, Marius is Confused, politically, but he's also super young, anyone would see that, and his opinions are understandably Updating as he moves away from his awful grandpa.

And aside from that--he's kind of quiet, he's pretty austere, he gets really super into the things he's into , he learns everything he can about it, and he doesn't talk about much besides that. He's not very interested in partying or dating (until he meets Cosette, and even then that's not Exactly dating) , he apparently puts a lot of time and practice into combat proficiency for whatever reason....

... That's Enjolras. From the limited external POV, which is all any human characters in this book can have on each other, Marius is a ton like Enjolras in the way he presents himself and what he talks about and what he focuses on. Yeah, Marius gets spacey after he meets Cosette, but Enjolras doesn't see him lying around in Murder Field or have to hear Marius' Romance Opinions or anything; he just knows That Abstracted Marius is kind of absent lately, and anyone might have their business to be about , it's nothing to judge a person over. All Enjolras ever sees is another kind of quiet intense guy slowly developing his own political opinions, as anyone might.

..the real question is, what does Marius think about Enjolras?

the thing is it's such a shame marius never went back after the whole defending-napoleon-fiasco bc I genuinely think enjolras likes him. and that he genuinely thinks he has potential in an 'he's a little confused but he's got the spirit', 'i could work with this' sort of way. like yeah he's a very serious sort of guy w strongly held beliefs but his behavior (to me at least) really reads like was interested to have him around & develop his politics. like in the post-napoleon-speech scene when combeferre has had his really good line & the rest of them have all walked out of the room & he stays behind:

the 'gazing gravely at him', the staying behind, the hand on his shoulder, they don't read to me like he has any dislike towards marius even if he obviously doesn't agree w what he's said, he seems like he understands marius' confusion. he's not giving any ground politically but he's interested in marius. a sort of 'missed the mark this time but let's try again' thing. and then way later (chronologically) he's still obviously thinking of marius in this bit & seems to genuinely think he'd do a good job & regrets that he never came back:

Hi! I want to thank you on the way you talk about The Marius Issue, it really helped me understand readings of it outside my own (i think most of the critique is very valid, and absolutely in line with the books and even with in-universe judgement on the events. Its just wild how many people seem to run on the few descriptors and believe that's all there is to it)

I am actually concerned that the way they introduced the idea of Marius, it would be easy falling into a kink-negative rabbit hole of "every Dom is inherently an abuser, every Sub is actually a victim and there is no way that dynamic could be fun or consentual". Because there has been similar thing already established with Louis and Lestat and now also with Louis and Armand. And then we will get to Daniel and Armand as well... That's so much revisiting to do, i am scared the show would not be able to pull it off, should we trust the writers?

For me, a cool thing about Armands and Mariuses relationship is that they affect each other pretty equally. Armand knows exactly where to push Marius to get what he wants, and Marius complies, always. Very often against reason. (EXPOSED! ThE MoSt ReASonAbLe TVC character is weak in the face of one specific boy and fumbles hard on his so-called Morals!)

Marius is portrayed to be very concerned for Amadeo distancing himself from humanity, and he tries over and over to push Amadeo back to it. His moral failure is that he can't do it fully, never actually commits to it - there is too much love, too much obsession and too much underlying conviction that Amadeo will recieve the Blood one day, hence the grooming.

There is so much nuance to it, like a fucked up tapestry of doom unrevelling its horrid beauty from the day Armand did not die in the brothel.

Yes, do trust the writers.

I know it was reduced to "dom/sub" in interviews, but I do think it is all a lot more complicated, and we see that already with how Loustat has shifted in this season already, despite it being "only" Louis.

We are on a POV show.

S3 will be Lestat's. I firmly believe we will have more characters there "chiming in", so to speak. There will not be a black and white picture of any of these characters, pun not intended - they will all be morally gray, and their actions understandable - and horrendous.

I am sure the show will make a very firm commentary re Marius, and I have a feeling that.... there maybe was a past to Daniel and Marius already, and now that Daniel knows... that commentary will come from him, maybe (after he remembers, of course). I think there is a lot of potential in it all, without watering anything down.

I disagree a bit that Marius is "only" weak in the face of Armand... there was more to it all in the books. Hints, mostly. The "ankles of the boys", for example.

I do think it good that the show makes it's commentary. And not everything they point out will be comfortable to acknowledge.

But I for one appreciate them for doing this.

Saw a post about Armand not knowing love outside of the vicious cycle of abuse, it was very on point and reminded me a lot about my own musings. Nothing not known, but yet it helps the brainrot to subside, with writing this out---

In the Books (activating pathetic booknerd mode, sorry) i feel like De Romanus bloodline, specifically, thematically is primarily about exploring faults of Patriarchy and to a lesser extent Feudalism through highlighting its affects on different generations and genders.

Huge part of Marius/Armand dynamics is that Amadeo consitently pushes Marius into a role of a Master/Father/God, just as much as Marius essentialy imposes the role of an Heir on him. After all, Marius brought Amadeo to the palazzo with the assumption he will become his fledgling. For Amadeo - Marius is there to provide safety, he is the Patriarch - so he shouldn't express vulnerability, show he is struggling, show his actions are misguided. Shouldn`t extend his responsibility on others. It would endanger the family. As an Heir Amadeo should be above all else - expected to be a caretaker for the young and a role model for them, get an education, give commands to house servants, be free to explore and make his own descisions yet he should be fully subservient only to the Head of House, the Master.

The stupid letter Amadeo leaves, when Marius sends him to brothels and tries to keep Amadeo within human comany, distancing himself and as such straying from original course of their relashionship (Marius gets sad and jealous over shit he caused himself, because he is a dumbass, if you did not know by now) :

"You are the Master. You should know all things. It`s unsupportable to be Mastered by the one who cannot do it. Make clear the way, shepherd, or lay down your staff."

Shows how much Amadeo internalizes their usual dynamic as "right" in his worldview. It also is a clear provocation - if you love me, you should keep me in my place, or else it means that you do not care.

What a way too call out Marius on his bullshit! And also how wrong and sad this is! Safety of the status quo above all else, to show devotion. "unsupportable", gods. Mariuses own actions are, of course, the thing that enables that, as well as the larger context of society they lived in… but it is so bad for both of them, on the personal level. Adhearing and imposing those rules from both sides is nothing more than a coping stategy to deal with circumstances of their respective lives. (very HOTD of them 😌 alicent hightower and viserys targaryen, that you? OMG LESTAT IS RHAENYRA---)

And when Amadeo becomes Armand The Coven Leader he, naturally, tries to play that game too. He has a job to do, he is now the Master. His job is to keep the coven (or his companions) "safe". There could be no show of "weakness" in his position so he resolves to drastic measures to assure his dominance, even when it is not a role he desires for himself.

He does it, because that is what he expected and imposed himself. It is how the world works, after all. And when it is too close to ruin, when he can't, as a person, take playing the role anymore... (to once again, preserve his worldview) he let's the Outsider ruin it. Because if it was the one who refused to participate in the system - that is why it failed! Not because the system is fucked from the beginning and all the suffering was for nothing.

He is stuck in cycles of performing roles to service the system, afraid that as soon as any part of it refuses to cooperate - it falls apart. So he forces it to work, desparetly, over and over again.

Yet, Armand was both given the Blood and taken away from his Master too young. Taken from two lives before he was able to grow up and naturally assume the "adult" role himself. He is stunted by that unfinished cycle, and feels the need to go back to go forward. Once again be the Heir, be submissive to someone to have a chance to grow and find himself in the safety it provides. Or… He needs to learn to abandon that worldview alltogether.

Anyways, that bloodline is generational trauma at its best ✌️💀

(i have the issue with the show, as i still have no idea how they are going to reconcile the idea of Marius "donating" Amadeo. Like? He is an Heir, so pushing him into such low social position... He is a Lord essentialy, just a young one. I have...anxieties about it. So much of De Romanus bloodline is an illustration of how patriarchy fails everyone involved, and if he is not treated like a firstborn son in the show... It would be sad to see a whole thematic layer go to waste)
