To commemorate the release of the excellent new documentary Scala!!! Or the Incredibly Strange Rise and Fall of the World's Wildest Cinema and How It Influenced a Mixed-up Generation of Weirdos and Misfits, the British Film Institute is holding Scala: Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll Cinema, a season of films associated with London’s notorious, much-missed repertory cinema. Reader, I was one of the mixed-up generation of misfits warped by the Scala at an impressionable age. (I moved to London just in time to experience its final year or so; I remember feeling bereft when it closed). The first double bill I ever saw there was within a month or two of arriving: Girl on a Motorcycle / The Wild Angels (in other words, Marianne Faithfull and Nancy Sinatra as black leather-clad biker mamas). This was when Kings Cross was still a genuinely dangerous grungy red-light district / junkie central (just walking from the tube station to the cinema felt like risking your life). From there, I plunged into essential underground classicks by the likes of John Waters, Russ Meyer, Kenneth Anger, Andy Warhol, Richard Kern and Bruce LaBruce. But for me, the film synonymous with the Scala will always be Thundercrack! (1975). It was a blast to revisit it on Sunday afternoon with friends. In this triple X sensual and depraved oddity written by George Kuchar and directed by Curt McDowell, a motley crew of freaky outsiders seek shelter at an isolated old dark house one rain-lashed night. The house in question is called Prairie Blossom and its chatelaine is the eccentric, drunk, reclusive and deeply horny Mrs. Gert Hammond, a Blanche DuBois-type wearing Anna Magnani’s black slip. If you’ve never experienced Thundercrack!, anticipate hardcore sex scenes interspersed with verbose faux Tennessee Williams dialogue (“Take me away from all this! I’ve got money, a car and a body – and they’re all yours!”). You get a measure of Thundercrack! immediately when Gert vomits into a toilet, her wig falls into the bowl, and she simply slaps it back onto her head to answer the front door. (“Who’s there that speaks to me in the voice of a woman? It’s been years since those doors felt the touch of a human knuckle!”). As Gert, the remarkable Marion Eaton’s gutsy and committed performance deserves to be proclaimed alongside Divine’s in Pink Flamingos or Female Trouble in the gutter movie pantheon.

Let’s go ape! This week, Peaches and Michael are questioning every cucumber in celebration of 1975’s THUNDERCRACK! In addition to discussing the undeniable legacy of this arthouse favorite’s unabashedly queer auteurs, our hosts delve into the film’s subversive use of all-manner of unsimulated sex. Joining the conversation is award-winning filmmaker Jennifer Kroot, who shares insight about one of the film’s co-creators, not just as his former student…but his documentarian. Then, acclaimed producer and “original bear” Bobby Barber stops by to talk about how his longtime love of this deeply subversive movie helped him find his community. From gorilla brides to severe eyebrows, this episode has it all! Go!

Raiders of the Lost Ark – Alternative Ending
A short story by Canyon
Tumblr media
"You've done your country a great service and we thank you", said Colonel Musgrove to Indiana Jones. "And, uh, we trust you found the settlement satisfactory?"
"Oh, they money's fine", began Indy. "But the situation is totally unacceptable."
"Well, gentlemen, I guess this just about wraps it up", finished Major Eaton
"Where is the Ark?" asked Brody, his voice full of urgency and concern.
"I thought we'd settled that. The Ark is somewhere very safe", replied Eaton.
"From whom?" asked Indy.
Brody was having none of it: "The Ark is a source of unspeakable power and it has to be researched."
"And it will be, I assure you", began Eaton. "Doctor Brody, Doctor Jones. We have top men working on it right now."
Indy leaned forward: "Who?"
Eaton replied with just two words: "Top Men."
Just at that moment, there was a knock at the door.
Eaton sighed. "Come in!"
An older gentlemen dressed in a suit came in and approached Eaton. He then whispered something in his ear.
Eaton looked uncomfortable as the man left.
"Ah gentlemen", he began. "There appears to have been a misunderstanding. According to an almost forgotten law from the 1920's, we, the government cannot take the Ark away. Therefore, as you have already realized, you are free to display the Ark in a museum of your choosing."
Indy and Marcus looked at each other, a slow smile spreading across their faces.
Two days later.
After some well-deserved rest, Indiana Jones was ready to attend the grand opening display of the Ark of the Covenant.
He had just arrived at Marcus' museum and was on his way to the East Wing, where the opening was taking place.
Indy was clean shaven and was wearing a black tuxedo, complete with a red silk carnation on the lapel.
He walked through the door and was just about to take in the sight of the Ark, when several people noticed his entrance and gave a round of applause. Indy offered a slight lop-sided smile and bowed slightly.
Marcus approached him with a big smile on his face.
"Indy, it's so good to see you here!" said his friend, jubilantly. "The Ark, it seems, lights up the whole room!"
"Thanks Marcus. It's good to be here. Have you seen Marion?"
Just as he had spoken the words, he noticed an attractive figure enter the room.
It was Marion and she was wearing a red floor length evening gown and looked stunning.
Indy smiled and as he did, she saw him and smiled.
"Well Jones, you really did it", she said admiringly, as they both approached the Ark which was in the center of the room surrounded by thick glass.
"I did. You know something, Marion; the Ark is a lot like you."
"Yeah, how so?" she asked, her curiosity piqued.
He turned to her, and put a hand round her waist. "Well, the Ark is stunning, beautiful to look at…"
He never finished his sentence as Marion's lips met his and they were both swept up in a glorious kiss.
Moments later, staff and reporters were gathered at the podium and Indy heard his name mentioned by Marcus a couple of times.
"I guess that's my cue", he told Marion.
Just as he was about to go, Marion grabbed his arm and pulled him into another kiss.
"Wow! What was that for?" he asked.
"For still being the man that I fell in love with ten years ago."
THE END

The Lucien Project: Day 13
Hi everybody! To keep myself accountable this NaNoWriMo season, I am going to be posting my word count on here every day, with an excerpt from the draft novel! Finally got caught back up to the NaNo word count! An update on the Lucien Project below:
11/13/2022: 2,538 words written
TO: BRANDON BORIS; CHAD CAMERON; MADELINE FRASIER; LISA MCBRIDE; OLIVIA NERUDA; EDWARD POOLE; ADDIE PROCK (DEPARTMENT HEADS)
CC: TYE DODSON; KOURTNEY EATON; MARION GALLEGOS; DION HODGES; ARTHUR JENNINGS; ANTHONY LEVY; PRISHA NEAL; ASA SALINAS; ZOEY STANLEY; SAVANNAH THORNTON; CODY WOODARD (SUPPORT STAFF)
FROM: RAMONA STROUD (PROJECT SUPERVISOR)
SUBJECT: URGENT MEMO - ASSIGNMENT TO LUCIEN PROJECT
MEMO: Greetings. If you are receiving this memo, you have been permanently assigned to a research position for the Lucien Project. Support Staff, please meet with your current department heads for information on your new assignment; they have been briefed and can direct you towards your new department head. A list of department heads and their specialities for the Lucien Project is at the end of this message. Please reach out to your new department heads for the Lucien Project for any questions which are not addressed herein.
The research subject is named Lucien Dominick Vitreaux, previously known as “Child L” for those involved in Project. The child is known to have telepathic abilities (the “Condition”). The purpose of the Lucien Project is to determine the extent of these abilities.
Thus far, we have very little information on the Condition. We have determined that Child L is able to send via telepathic images. We are speculating whether eye contact is a condition for the communication to be successful. It seems he is only able to send images to one person at a time. Any further information about the Condition is to be determined, as set forth in the report criteria below.
Daily reporting from department heads is absolutely mandatory. Failure to provide daily reports to Dr. Ramona Stroud will result in immediate reassignment, and possible termination with the hospital. Each report should include a chronological order of events or procedures undertaken, with detailed responses regarding treatment, test results, or behavioral reactions from Child L. Each report should include relevant test results or other supporting information as an attachment. Each report, additionally, should be signed and dated by the department head before submittal. Every detail you learn and every, every, suspicion you have about Child L is to be written in these reports. Accurate, detailed, important information is the goal, but full understanding of the Condition is the purpose of the research. Good luck, and congratulations on your reassignment to the Lucien Project.
Project Supervisor: Dr. Ramona Stroud
Head of Project: Dr. Edward Poole
Head of Neurology: Dr. Madeline Frasier
Head of Development: Dr. Olivia Neruda
Head of Urology: Dr. Brandon Boris
Head of Gastroenterology: Dr. Lisa McBride
Head of Hygiene: RN Chad Cameron
SIGNED: Ramona Stroud

A Movie A Day #89: Paint It Black (1989, directed by Tim Hunter)
A Movie A Day #89: Paint It Black (1989, directed by Tim Hunter)
Tumblr media
This month, since the site is currently reviewing every episode of Twin Peaks, each entry in Move A Day is going to have a Twin Peaks connection.  Paint In Black was directed by Tim Hunter, who directed three episodes of Twin Peaks, including the one that I reviewed earlier today. Jonathan Dunbar (Rick Rossovich) should have it all.  He is an acclaimed sculptor but he’s being cheated financially…
