The legendary Mario Bava has inspired generations of filmmakers, including names as wide-ranging as Martin Scorsese, Tim Burton and Guillermo Del Toro. With their virtuoso photography and budget-belying visual effects, his films transcend their unassuming origins and played a vital role in shaping the horror movie as we think of it today. This exclusive collection from Arrow Video gathers together nine films from Bava’s diverse catalogue – including gothic horrors, giallo thrillers and even a real-time crime drama.
Our journey through the maestro’s output begins with Black Sunday, the ground-breaking gothic shocker that defined the Italian horror film, before launching the “giallo” phenomenon with the twisty The Girl Who Knew Too Much. Up next is a triple bill of terror with the gruesome anthology Black Sabbath, followed by a further slice of the macabre with the spine-tingling Kill, Baby… Kill! Next, Bava channels his inner Agatha Christie with the Ten Little Indians-inspired Five Dolls for an August Moon, followed by the proto-Friday the 13th slasher A Bay of Blood (aka Twitch of the Death Nerve). Bava then returns to his horror stomping ground with the twisted and atmospheric Baron Blood and his surreal classic Lisa and the Devil – widely considered to be his masterpiece. The collection concludes with Rabid Dogs (aka Kidnapped), a gritty, frenetic crime thriller that grabs the viewer by the throat and refuses to let go.
This stunning collection represents one of Italian cinema’s unsung heroes at the height of his creativity, ably assisted by a diverse and talented cast of cult actors, including Barbara Steele (The Pit and the Pendulum), Telly Savalas (Kojak), John Saxon (Tenebrae), Edwige Fenech (Strip Nude For Your Killer), Erika Blanc (The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave) and Boris Karloff (The Comedy of Terrors). Whether you’re a newcomer to these films or experiencing them for the umpteenth time, Macabre Visions: The Films of Mario Bava is a must-have addition to your library.

When Diana and her young family moved to Mumbai in 2018 for her husband’s job, she finally had the time and space to concentrate on her painting in daylight hours. Photo – Nikole Ramsay.
That enthusiasm has only continued during the pandemic, where life has been forced to stand still and Diana can spend as much time as possible in her studio! Photo – Nikole Ramsay.

Diana in front of her works ahead of her new exhibition, All The Paintings , at The Ko Creative Studio in Geelong Photo – Nikole Ramsay.
Diana Ellinger started out her professional life as a graphic designer, working for years in Melbourne’s communications industry before relocating to Canberra with her husband. In a new city with some new inspiration, she decided to finesse her amateur art skills and enrol in painting workshops at ANU’s Art School.
‘Since then my art practice has largely existed in the margins of my life,’ she explains. ‘The sneaky stolen moments when children are sleeping, or carefully slotted in around design jobs.’ She credits this extreme multitasking as the reason it’s taken her a little over a decade to properly find her voice!
Diana returned from Mumbai, where she had relocated in 2018, with her young family in March of this year. Promptly moving into then-temporary accommodation at her mother-in-law’s house on the Bellarine Peninsula, Diana has experienced a burst of creative enthusiasm. With a new regimen of dedicated studio time (and built-in babysitting courtesy of grandma!) she has created a series of colourful abstract paintings that exude a concoction of excitement, energy and nervousness.
Read our conversation with the artist below about finding her creative feet, and what to expect ahead of her All The Paintings exhibition at The Ko Creative Studio in Geelong in late September!
HI Diana! Can you tell me about the space in which you typically create?
In 2018 we moved to Mumbai. It’s often called Maximum City, because it’s a monster of a place, built on top of a reclaimed swamp with a population the size of Australia. It’s polluted and crowded and crazy. There’s fabulous wealth and desperate poverty all mingled together. Life never stops, the colours, smell and noise never stop. My work shifted dramatically as did my perspective – this is hard to avoid when your privilege is constantly slapping you in the face.
In March this year we left Mumbai for what we thought would be a month or two. Six months later we are still staying with my ever-supportive mother-in-law, on the Bellarine – another kind of paradise filled with blooming acacias, bleating lambs and purring frogs. I decided I needed to commit to our new surroundings, so I ordered paint and canvas and set up a studio in the shed, where I compete for space with the lawn mower, red back spiders and the resident rats.
Can you tell me a little about the process of actually creating your works? What materials do you use, and how long do they usually take?
I move from one painting to the next, either down on the floor or propped up against a wall. I have several on the go at a time, depending on what the space allows. I’m happy when I can visualise three or more painting moves in advance, so if the process stalls with one painting, I move to another and just keep going.
The body of work I’m showing at The Ko, from inception to hanging, took about five months. Works that require a long drying period, especially those with thick poured layers tend to take longest to make, perhaps a month maybe two. Others happen quickly, and some emerge stubbornly over a long period of layering and reinvention.
Do you have any key references or inspirations?
I’m moved by the abstract expressionist painters of the twentieth century, art legends like Mark Rothko and Helen Frankenthaler. I love the processes of artists who followed the minimalist movement, and put their bodies into their work. Artists like Eva Hesse and Fabienne Verdier, and contemporary figurative artists who explore material and colour, like Swedish painter Karin Mamma Andersson and Luc Tuymans.
I’m inspired by local painters like Miranda Skoczek, Dale Frank and Emma Beer. Argh, this list could go on forever, but I think one of the best things about being an artist is looking at other people’s art!
How has this period of isolation we’ve just been through affected your work?
I am so thankful that because of the support of my mother-in-law I still manage to pocket some daily painting time. Its scarcity has really elevated it to be something much more privileged and special and I think that vibe bears out in my paintings.
My surroundings always impact the tone and flavour of my paintings, so being here on the beautiful Bellarine has no doubt changed things, though my memories and experience of India will probably take a long time to fade.
All The Paintings will be open by appointment from September 26, 2020. Visit The Ko Creative Studio’s website here for more details.

It may not look or feel like the Summer outside, Indicator have a perfect release to hot up your Summer. Presenting a six-disc limited edition Blu-ray box set dedicated to the unique collaborative relationship between one of cinema’s greatest visual stylists and one of Hollywood’s most iconic stars…Marlene Dietrich & Josef von Sternberg At Paramount(1930- 1935).
This deluxe collection showcases the six remarkable and influential American features that these two émigré artists made for Paramount during the first years of the talking picture. Released on Blu-ray for the very first time in the UK, the six films are: the sensuous MOROCCO (1930), Dietrich’s triumphant US debut, co-starring the great Gary Cooper; the subversive espionage thriller DISHONORED (1931); the delirious SHANGHAI EXPRESS (1932); the extraordinary BLONDE VENUS (1932), co-starring Cary Grant; historical epic THE SCARLET EMPRESS (1934), in which Dietrich gives one of her greatest performances as Russia’s Catherine the Great, and; the deviant THE DEVIL IS A WOMAN (1935).
The box set will be available on 19 August, the same day as the delayed release of the Michael Palin comedy THE MISSIONARY. Originally announced for publication in June, we have had to push the release date back due to the unprecedented amount of restoration work required. This long-overdue Blu-ray world premiere will not only look the best it ever has but will also present the film in its original widescreen aspect ratio for the very first time. We’re delighted to have had the opportunity to work so closely with cinematographer Peter Hannan and director Richard Loncraine on reviving this comedy classic from HandMade Films.
Marlene Dietrich & Josef von Sternberg At Paramount(1930- 1935) | 19th August
The collaboration between filmmaker Josef von Sternberg and actress Marlene Dietrich is one of the most enduring in all Hollywood cinema. Tasked by Paramount bosses to find ‘the next big thing’, director von Sternberg lighted upon German silent star Dietrich and brought her to Hollywood. Successfully transitioning from the silent to the sound era, together they crafted a series of remarkable features that expressed a previously hitherto unbridled ecstasy in the process of filmmaking itself. Marked by striking cinematography, beautiful design and elaborate camerawork these vibrantly sensuous films redefined cinema of the time, while Dietrich’s sexually ambiguous on-screen personas caused a sensation and turned her from actor to superstar and icon. Lavish, lascivious and wildly eccentric, the films Josef von Sternberg and Marlene Dietrich made for Paramount Pictures in the 1930s provide a unique testimony to Hollywood’s Golden Age.

Fresh from Hurricane Harvey’s flooding, Houston starts to build anew—in the flood plain
By Scott Wilson, Washington Post, May 22, 2018
HOUSTON--There was a golf course across from the house on Kemp Forest Drive that Andrew Taylor recently bought with his girlfriend. Hilly and dotted with ponds, Pine Crest Country Club was shabby around the edges, but in this city of floods and footloose building rules, it was a welcome sponge for the seasonal rains.
Now Taylor is watching work crews cement over the former fairways for homes--900 of them--marking the first new residential development to rise in a flood plain since Hurricane Harvey swept through this city late last summer. Along with the construction comes anxiety, not only along Kemp Forest Drive, but also across the nation’s fourth-largest city, a flat expanse of tree-lined neighborhoods and towering urban enclaves that is always one major storm away from inundation.
“We had some questions about how we would fare flood-wise,” said Taylor, who is 32 and works in an escape room, a real-life game in which groups solve puzzles to leave the locked space. “But this has never really flooded before, so we feel pretty safe. And we’re hopeful it might raise our property values.” Houston is building again, gingerly.
A city chastened by disastrous flooding just months ago is trying to balance the need for new construction in a region short of housing with the civic fear that Houston is returning to its freewheeling ways.
The construction in northwest Houston, which serves as something of a post-Harvey starting gun, is being built to new, stricter standards. Planners say those rules reflect both the local government’s commitment to avoid repeating mistakes and new federal weather predictions that anticipate even more severe periods of rain here for decades to come. In the short term, forecasters say this year’s hurricane season, which begins June 1, could be even worse than last year’s.
As planners take the new cautious spirit and future weather into account, Houston officials are seeking more flexibility from the federal government over how billions of dollars in emergency funds can be used to empty out or retool residential areas that have flooded repeatedly.
“What are we going to do in these neighborhoods that people just don’t want to leave?” said Stephen Costello, Houston’s chief resilience officer, whose task is to balance development and flood protection as the city recovers.
Despite its size, Houston has never had zoning regulations and, despite its flood-prone topography, it added flood-protection standards to building codes just a little more than two decades ago.
The need to build even in flood-susceptible areas is the result of the region’s projected growth rate. Under even modest population forecasts, the Houston metro area is expecting to add 4 million residents--a two-thirds increase--in the next three decades. The housing stock, even before the storm, was struggling to keep up.
In late August, when slow-moving Hurricane Harvey dumped more than four feet of rain across much of Southeast Texas, all 22 of the Bayou City’s bayous flooded. The waters left more than 65 people dead and caused an estimated $120 billion in damage.
The debris piles are gone. But thousands of people remain in temporary housing, and a school district that had nearly 300 campuses damaged by floodwaters is still improvising to get children who are accustomed to neighborhood schools to be comfortable in more-distant classrooms.
The ubiquitous billboards and radio ads for real estate speculators--offering cash for flood-damaged homes--have helped keep the storm and its aftermath at the center of Houston’s civic culture.
“Harvey was a wake-up call,” Mayor Sylvester Turner (D) told a packed downtown ballroom of Houston’s business, political and civic leaders during his annual State of the City address this month. “And we’re still not where we need to be.”
Turner has been the driving force behind new building regulations that take into effect the revised weather predictions, which come as little surprise to people here. As the mayor told his audience of mostly longtime Houstonians, “We have had three 500-year storms in the last three years.”
A 500-year storm is one that has a 0.2 percent chance of occurring in any given year. That something is shifting in Houston’s weather has been obvious to those paid to think about how the city should redevelop and grow in Harvey’s aftermath.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration signaled recently that it is revising the rainfall totals for Houston that once defined a 100-year storm, one that has a 1 percent chance of occurring in any given year. In a draft analysis that takes into account Houston’s rainfall in recent decades, NOAA has added three to five inches of rain to what constitutes a 100-year storm, meaning that daily rainfall in such cases would equal 15 to 18 inches.
That revision, still to receive final approval, extends the threat of major flooding to many more neighborhoods.
“So much of Houston was built before we knew what we know today,” said Carol Ellinger Haddock, Houston’s director of public works. “And the weather is changing.”

Winter chills just mean that it's November, and Arrow Video are set to heat things up with a George Romero box set, a blaxploitation chiller, classic horror in steelbook form, a modern-day Russian black comedy, and a cult thriller directed by Steve Buscemi! With plenty of lavish packaging and limited edition items, Christmas has come early for film collectors!
Legendary horror cinema innovator, George A Romero, is responsible for arguably the most influential zombie films of all time. But he doesn't just make undead epics, and the three films collected here in the box set George Romero Between Night and Dawn - There's Always Vanilla, Season of the Witch and The Crazies - showcase the versatility and dynamism of this American auteur. As well as the films there are Romero interviews and documentaries and much more.
Next is the stunning debut of of the blaxploitation favorite JD's Revenge, a story about a man possessed by the spirit of a murderous gangster. Featuring Academy Award-winner Louis Gossett Jr (An Officer and a Gentleman), this is alternately tough and terrifying - a Blaxploitation gem waiting to be rediscovered.
Stephen King was once famously quoted as saying, "I have seen the future of horror...his name is Clive Barker." That future was realized in 1987 with the release of Barker's directorial debut Hellraiser. Introducing the world to the iconic Pinhead and his sadistic band of Cenobites, Hellraiser became an instant genre classic upon release and remains one of the most frighteningly original visions in horror. Now fans can own it in the form of an incredibly awesome steelbook with tons of extras.
The last of the Arrow Video titles for November is Animal Factory. Directed by Steve Buscemi, the film stars Willem Dafoe and Edward Furlong as they make their way through life inside a maximum security prison. This was Buscemi's second stint in the director's chair and sees him marshalling a formidable ensemble cast, for a powerful and sincere account of the men caught up in the penal system.
Finally, there is one release from Arrow Academy US - Zoology, an extraordinary film about a zoo worker who grows a tail, that proves that challenging, thought-provoking art house cinema is alive and well in the 21st century. In turns, disturbing, uplifting, and blackly comic, this is a challenging and irresistible contemporary fable, that deftly mixes the deadpan humour of Aki Kaurismäki with a poignant examination of social issues including loneliness and aging.
George Romero Between Night and Dawn Limited Edition [Dual Format] (11/14)
George Romero's name may be synonymous with the living dead subgenre, but his filmography is far richer and more varied than his reputation as "the zombie guy" would suggest. Following the breakout success of his debut feature Night of the Living Dead, the director would embark upon a series of projects which demonstrate a master filmmaker with more than mere gut-munching on his mind.
In There's Always Vanilla, young drifter Chris and beautiful model Lynn embark upon a tumultuous relationship which seems doomed from the outset. Season of the Witch (released theatrically as Hungry Wives) follows the exploits of Joan Mitchell - a housewife who seeks to escape the confines of her humdrum suburban existence through a flirtation with witchcraft. Lastly, The Crazies sees Romero returning to firmer horror territory as a small rural town finds itself in the grip of an infection which send its hosts into a violent, homicidal frenzy.
Taken together, these three films, made in the period between Romero's celebrated living dead outings Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, serve to shine a light on the broader thematic concerns and auteurist leanings of a skilled craftsman too often pigeonholed within the genre.

Introducing the world to the iconic Pinhead and his sadistic band of Cenobites, Hellraiser became an instant genre classic upon release and remains one of the most frighteningly original visions in horror.

Animal Factory [Blu-ray and DVD] (11/28)
Troubled youth Ron Decker (Edward Furlong, American History X) is sentenced to a ten-year stint in the notorious San Quentin State Prison for a drug-dealing conviction. Inexperienced in the ways of prison life, he's taken under the wing of Earl Copen (Willem Dafoe, To Live and Die in LA), an experienced con with the entire prison in the palm of his hand - inmates and guards alike. But as Ron grows increasingly cocky in his privileged role as Earl's confidant, is he in danger of biting off more than he can chew with some of the jail's more volatile inhabitants?
Based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Eddie Bunker (Reservoir Dogs), Animal Factory was Steve Buscemi's (Lonesome Jim, Interview) second stint in the director's chair and sees him marshaling a formidable ensemble cast, including Bunker, Danny Trejo (Machete) and Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler), for a powerful and sincere account of the men caught up in the penal system and the deals they cut with each other, and themselves, in order to survive.
Features:
- High Definition digital transfer
- Lossless original 2.0 stereo audio
- Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing

Zoology [Blu-ray and DVD] (11/14)
Writer-director Ivan I. Tverdovsky's prize-winning sophomore feature (Special Prize of the Jury at Karlovy Vary Film Festival, Best Picture at Fantastic Fest) deftly mixes the deadpan humour of Aki Kaurismäki with a poignant examination of social issues including loneliness and aging.
Natasha is a middle-aged admin employee at a zoo where her female co-workers take pleasure in making fun of her. She lives with her God-fearing mother and leads a dull existence without prospects, until one day she grows a tail. Medical examinations follow where she meets Peter, a young radiologist and her dreary life is turned upside down.
Described as "Kafka meets Cronenberg" (Hollywood Reporter) Tverdovsky's film is a beautifully photographed portrait of Eastern Europe that recalls the recent New Romanian Cinema and features a brave and brilliant central performance from Natalya Pavlenkova.
Features
- High Definition 1080p Presentation
- Optional English Subtitles
- 5.1 DTS-HD MA surround sound

The week it didn’t snow. 12/7/16
Oh wait- that's every week here... It has been really cold and there's no snow at all. I don't get it.
Weeeelll, this week was pretty good. Every week is flying by, it's crazy! Today marks 5 months in the field for me and I can't believe it! Psych- I totally can. it feels like I've been here for an eternity. lol.
We met with Dominique again- she is this really nice lady who basically already lives a mormon lifestyle so we just need to help her realize that and get her baptized! Anyway, she needed help unpacking her house so we went over and spent literally 3 hours folding clothes and answering questions/talking about her morals. Then things got a little crazy because her second youngest son pooped and took his diaper off so she had to deal with that (I mean, we were having a REALLY important conversation- who does this baby think he is interrupting with his bodily functions?!?! ) and then we realized it was like 5:20 and we still had a 20 minute bike ride home so we quickly invited her to baptism and she accepted so that was exciting! We haven't even had a formal lesson with her yet but we will keep working with her!
We also saw Robert again last night. He told us he had some regrets from the past, so I asked him about it because I was trying to lead into the atonement. Well, he then proceeded to tell us all about how he was sent to a children's home when he was little because he was a bad kid. Not what I wanted to talk about but it was entertaining and hearing him talk about 1950's post war Germany is really cool.
Anyway, that's about it for this week! I'm really starting to understand just how important and significant the Savior's birth was. The world changed forever that night! Also, Mary is such an example to me. I was watching the bible video where an Angel appears to her and tells her that she will give birth to the Savior of the world, and her response is, "Behold, thy handmaid of the Lord." What a humble and willing response to a task so intimidating. I really admire how virtuous, loving, obedient, faithful, and courageous as she was.
I hope y'all are #Lightingtheworld and serving others this Christmas season! I love the Savior so much and the 25 days of service are such a great way to focus more on Him. Have a great week!

Pictures: 1. Okay so Elder Nish from my MTC district got spontaneously transferred into my district here in kannapolis, and Elder Welch also came out with us, so thats 3 missionaries in one district that came out together. So that's pretty neat.
2. We let the Martinez's daughters wear our name tags at church and they took over our job of handing out the programs.
3. Me and my "mini missionary" featuring Elder Ellinger photo bombing (uhhh, rude!!?!)
4. There was a creepy uhaul van that is like straight out of the walking dead so OF COURSE I had to take a picture by it.
5. Well, I walked into the bathroom at a member's house and to my delight was met with the blue eyes of this horror hanging on the wall.
6. Classic passive aggressive North Carolinian.
Don't worry, I've changed a lot in the past 6 months but not really. ;) I'm still a dweeb.

The Missionary | 19th August
Monty Python alumnus Michael Palin writes and stars in this ribald comedy of sex and sensibility. Timid Reverend Charles Fortescue returns to London in 1906 after ten years of service in Africa to start a mission to save the fallen women of Soho. But his dedication to tending to the needs of those in his care soon meets with the disapproval of the church and his patron.
Directed by Richard Loncraine (Richard III, Bellman & True), The Missionary is a charming and beautifully detailed comedy which boasts a superb supporting cast that includes Maggie Smith, Trevor Howard, Denholm Elliott, Michael Hordern, Graham Crowden and Neil Innes.
