There was no time to waste. A minke whale stranded in Breezy Point? Well that’s only a 45 minute huffing heaving full speed bike ride from my house. The winds malign against me, threatening to hold me in place as the burn of the incline across the bridge hits its peak. I repeat to myself creative mantras on my lack of pain to induce the beautiful temporary delusions that enable strength. I arrive to a sandy expanse facing the ocean where hundreds of seabirds diving off in turbulent waters pay little mind to mammalian gatherings on sandy beaches when there’s just so much damn fish to be had. A lone minke whale lay across the shores of New York. The scene fills with the responsible authorities and a team from the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society. They work diligently to reposition the whale and begin the important work of a necropsy and attempts to learn as much from this animal as possible. I stand aside in admiration of a creature previously unknown to me in the flesh. I close my eyes in rebellion against the increasingly frigid breeze and think of life as a minke whale traveling the Atlantic shores. I see the world aquatic, dark but rich with life. Around me life gleams with the sounds of billions of my kin in their many forms. My flukes and fins undulate with a swooshing sensation known only to those built to traverse waters as I glide towards the surface where the sun or moon and its many stars will greet me for a glorious intake of that salty air. I open my eyes and wake from this dream to the animal at the end of its journey. I sketch sloppily and furiously so as to not forget this moment of experiencing this new creature here at my home. A potent reminder of the sad yet awesome experiences you can have where you least expect it. Gray whales emerge as if reaching to the skies and refusing to return to the sea. A little snout and a brief show of peduncle and we’re able to match this cryptic manatee to one we’ve seen in years past! One captured years ago! One of the few Antillean manatees that swim across tens of kilometers of deep blue sea for the lush grasses of Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve. It reveals to us a long-term pattern of offshore habitat use by manatees unknown in other parts of the world. And it sure does look like a rope on it! But it’s ok, it’s just a mirage. The water boils with life. Sixteen bottlenose dolphins chase and flee, leaping carelessly into the air and landing with roaring splashes. They swarm and tighten then burst forth in all directions.
