the air conditioning rattles inside the dining room, the noise serving as background noise to a scene that reminds hajime of home. an amalgamation of steamed bok choy, marinated pork belly, and acrid fish sauce wafts through the air. this week's ulam is sinigang. her favorite, he recalls.

the empty space beside the pair leaves a bitter taste of emptiness and longing on their tongues, but neither expresses it, nor are they aware of the other's parallel feelings. instead, they sit in comfortable silence while hajime's nanay spoons the soup into a serving bowl and his lola plates the freshly cooked rice, the scene reminiscent of childhood summers spent together under the blazing heat with the promise of good, hearty food.

billows of steam dance up, up, and up into the ceiling and drift away into nothingness, all while two chairs squeak against wood, alerting the table of the women's arrival. tooru thanks them for the meal excitedly. something is amiss.

"it's too hot to eat sinigang in this weather," his mother scolds, despite carefully pouring a spoonful of the soup into her own bowl of rice. "you should've asked me to cook something cooler. i would've been fine with cooking those korean cold noodles you always like."

"it's fine," her son responds earnestly. his words are slightly muffled from the bits of meat and veggies stuffed in his cheeks, a habit he hadn't grown out of since his youth. "it tastes good, anyways."

tooru's eyes light up with his own taste of the meal. "really good. it tastes really, really good. they don't have food like this in argentina, you know."

hajime's lola chuckles at his remark, her back flushed against her seat and her hands folded on her lap. "i'm sure you missed this," she remarks. something in her tone is airy yet playful. "hajime told me about your travels. have you found any lovers overseas? any romance?"

"oh, yes! it's good for you guys to find someone to settle with at your age," his mother chirps in, and the two men are choked with shock.

unease riddles itself into both of their bones. there's a truthful, honest answer that they're both capable of crafting in their heads. but if there is one thing they have in common, it's that they're stubborn. so, together (unknowingly), they push away their respective realities and opt for something vague. something that prances around the bushes of what they know to be factual.

the argentinian is the first to speak up. "i have a little bit of an interest in someone, but i don't think i plan on doing anything about it soon." there's an awkward chuckle tacked onto the end of his statement and a crack in his syllables, but he tries desperately not to think about it. he glances over at hajime in hopes that whatever his friend says will save them from the pressure.

"same for me. work's too busy these days, i can't focus on those things right now, nanay."

much to his demise, it doesn't save them, at all.

the man across from her wears a corporate smile and it irks her, almost. he's not the ideal image of a manager. she'd envisioned something more friendly, something therapeutic, far from the person sitting on her couch writing down notes dutifully.

"that's good," he exclaims absentmindedly as he continues to jot down note after note after note. she wonders what he could possibly be writing about. her poor time management skills? her diminishing motivation and lack of individualism in a growing sea of competition? she doesn't want to imagine it.

he pauses for a moment. the notebook in his hands plops neatly onto the coffee table, and his hands settle onto his lap. it's too professional. too robotic. "have you considered going on tour?"

"sorry?"

"well, i was talking to your label, and they believed that it'd be a fitting time for you to do a tour around the country considering the rapid success of your most recent album." the man's stare burns laser-ignited holes into her flesh, as if he isn't asking her to consider the offer, but rather telling her to do it.

"but i thought they wanted me to begin working on a new album," she quips. there's a small edge of bitterness to her voice that leaks out against her will.

her manager, with all the neutrality and competence he can muster, chuckles softly at her concern. "of course, we already thought about that. we were wondering if you would like to try having a third party produce your instrumentals, in order to lessen the burden and ensure faster production. all you'd have to do while on tour is work on your lyrics and record. it's time efficient, and distributes all the responsibilities as opposed to you handling everything on your end."

she wants to laugh at him, but she knows it's improper and rude when all he's trying to do is maximize her profit -- the job that he was assigned to do. but she can't quite fight the twitch beneath her eye and the shifting of her weight in her disturbance. "look, i understand you're trying to help me, but-" her breath hitches. a tinge of anger bubbles up in her throat and she's scared it's going to make things worse. her hands grab at the fabric of her pants as if to restrain herself from unleashing something she doesn't quite mean. "i've been doing everything the same way every year -- i've composed every song, i've written every lyric, all the music videos are directed by me, and i don't get why you would think changing any of that would help."

anxiety crawls up the surface area of her spine and clings onto her. her manager is silent, evidently deep in thought, and his eyes drift away to the window. his hand smooths his hair away from his forehead, the action embedding some sort of fear into her that she knows is misplaced. "let's talk about this another time. i'll give you a while to consider the deal. i hope you can compose a clear and concise answer by then," he speaks, his tone far too formal for her liking. he excuses himself before she can respond, and before she can think about what he said, the door closes (nearly slams) shut behind her.

she can't help the small yet fleeting curse that spills from her lips, nor the sigh that escapes shortly after. irritation is a cruel and ugly feeling, she decides.

but the door squeaks open just as quickly as it was shut. footsteps -- heavy, loud, and slow -- approach the couch from behind. when she looks up, she's met with a pair of faces looking down at her.

"we brought drinks," tooru chirps out in an attempt to alleviate the friction coagulating in the air. "and food. from iwa's mom, of course."

the upturn of her lips is beyond her control. "i really need that," she breathes out. hajime shakes his head at the misery before him.

"what'd you do?"

"i didn't do anything. it's just more grievances from the industry. they want this, they want that; anything that'll grant them more money will do."

the two make themselves comfortable beside her, with the more lively of the duo on her right and her muse on her left. tooru pops open the bottle of soju unceremoniously while hajime pries open the tupperware lid on the table. the scene is welcoming and warm, a stark contrast to the cold monotony of her manager and the white-hot resentment simmering in her lungs. it feels right.

her eyes fall to the desktop at the side of the room and the haphazard arrangement of materials on her table (a leather notebook filled with vague compositions of soon-to-be-lyrics, the same pen she's been using since her second year of high school, an expensive microphone provided to her by her label that she needs to clean more often), and for the first time in a long while, she finds herself questioning the importance of her career. gone are the days of drafting cheesy songs in her bedroom and singing about the infatuation that seems to have altered her perception of the word permanently; she's become a cog to the machine and she only realizes it now. something in her aches.

hajime's stare follows hers, his cheeks puffed up with warm sinigang and rice. he questions the furrow in her brow and the displeasure in her gaze and finds his mind running back to the other night. the syrupy words and heartfelt verbiage clearly addressed to someone he may or may not know plague his mind, and he wonders if he'd find something similar in the notes sprawled across her desk.

tooru is silent. as opposed to his friends, whose eyes are cast to the same point, he's stuck watching them. the proximity of their legs, the coordination in their movement, the warmth that exudes from their combined presence; it all slowly chips away at whatever buried hope he'd carried with him from argentina to his home country.

it's a half return to normalcy. they're all bound together by long-time loyalty and care, but with the transfiguration of their hearts, it's different. there's a shift in the air attributed to maturation and growth. they don't want to acknowledge it.

• Battle of Damascus

The Battle of Damascus was a battle between Allied Forced and Vichy French forced and was the final action of the Allied advance on Damascus in Syria during the Syria–Lebanon campaign in World War II.

On June 8th, 1941, troops of the 5th Indian Infantry Brigade Group had crossed the Syrian border from the British Mandate of Palestine to take Quneitra and Deraa with the objective of opening the way for the forces of the 1st Free French Division to advance along the roads from these towns to Damascus. This was one of four attacks planned for the campaign by the Allied commander, General Sir Henry Wilson. Gentforce had been under the temporary command of the commander of the 5th Indian Infantry Brigade, Brigadier Wilfrid Lloyd, since 12 June when Legentilhomme had been wounded. The plan called for the troops of 5th Indian Brigade to advance northwards from their positions at Artouz on the Quneitra–Damascus road across country west of the road towards Mezzeh. Mezzeh was a large village on a junction with the Beirut to Damascus road, some three miles west of Damascus itself. The brigade's supplies, ammunition and the anti-tank element would follow closely behind on the road proper. Meanwhile, the Free French forces would advance along the Kissoué – Damascus road to capture Qadim as a preliminary to entering the Syrian capital, some four miles further north. On June 18th, the Indian troops set out and skirmished their way north. They reached Mezzeh at 04:15. By 05:30, after an hour of fierce hand-to-hand fighting, Mezzeh was captured. However, there was a major problem: the equipment and anti-tank guns travelling up the main road had earlier got ahead of the infantry and run into a Vichy roadblock where most of the vehicles were knocked out. Furthermore, the planned advance by the Free French to Qadim had been delayed, allowing the Vichy defenders to concentrate on the Mezzeh action, putting intense pressure on the Allied position whilst thwarting any attempt to relieve them and bring in vitally needed anti-tank weapons.

On June 19th, Major General John Evetts, commander of the British 6th Infantry Division, arrived to relieve Lloyd and take control of the Allied forces east of Merdjayoun. With the losses suffered by the Indian brigade, he requested that the British 16th Infantry Brigade be detached from the 7th Australian Division and sent to his sector. Three Australian battalions were also detached to Evetts' command: the 2/3rd Machine Gun Battalion and the 2/3rd and 2/5th Infantry Battalions. By nightfall on 19 June, the Allied position at Mezzeh was desperate. Ammunition was running low, no food had been eaten for 24 hours, casualties were severe, and medical supplies were exhausted. During the night (when Vichy attacks were suspended), three men managed to reach Gentforce headquarters with the news of the position in Mezzeh. Early on June 20th, Brigadier Lloyd, having handed over to Evetts, resumed command of the 5th Indian Brigade and sent a force comprising two companies from the 3/1st Punjab Regiment, two companies of French Marines and a battery of artillery to fight its way through to Mezzeh. But they could not blast a way through and they progressed only slowly against determined opposition from French tanks. A Free French attack on Qadim the previous night had failed expensively, so that they were unable to exert pressure on Qadim that morning to draw Vichy forces away from Mezzeh. That night, however, the Free French with support from British anti-tank and anti-aircraft guns and an Australian machine-gun battalion, advanced against light Vichy defences and captured Qadim by the morning of the 21st.

Throughout the evening of June 20-21st, the Australians fought several actions, attacking a series of stone forts overlooking the Mezzeh and the Quneitra road. Elsewhere, a company of Australians attempted to move around the left flank of the Vichy defenders to cut the road running north-west to Beirut and establish a road block in the Barada Gorge. A see-sawing action took place amongst the forts, during which a force of 59 Australians was briefly captured, before a counter-attack early on June 21st freed them and retook the forts. Meanwhile, a 12-hour defensive action held the Barada Gorge to the west, turning back several French attacks that included tanks and armoured cars. During the morning of June 21st, the Australians consolidated their positions around the forts, and in the Barada Gorge and around 11:00, the Vichy French garrison in Damascus surrendered. By noon, the Allied forces were in Damascus and the Vichy forces were retreating west along the Beirut road. With the fall of Damascus, Gentforce accomplished its primary goal. Elsewhere, fighting around Merdjayoun continued until June 24th, when Allied forces eventually captured the town. The fighting between the Vichy forces and the Allies continued throughout the month. Further actions included fighting around Damour and the capture of Beirut.

30th May 1889 saw the birth near Kirkliston of Isobel Wylie Hutchison.

This is a great tale of a remarkable strong willed woman bucking the trends and behaviour expected of a lady back in the mud 20th century.

Isobel Wylie Hutchison was an Arctic traveller during the 1920s and 1930s. She was also a botanist, a writer, a poet, an artist and speaker of numerous languages, so a bit of a polymath.

Carlowrie Castle a Scots baronial mansion was the comfortable upper-middle class home into which Isobel Wylie Hutchison was born in 1889. It was there her father, Thomas Hutchison, a successful wine merchant in Edinburgh, looked after his gardens, and passed on to Isobel his fascination for plants and his habit of meticulous note-taking. Although called a castle, Carlowrie was built between 1852 and 1855, so was never a defensive structure, but a luxurious home.

From 1917-18, she studied at an agricultural college, after which, she visited a number of countries around the Mediterranean region. At a time when women were expected to stay at home, dressed in petticoats and tending to domestic duties, Isobel would often leave home for several days – much to the despair of her mother!

A Gaelic speaker, she had soon covered Scotland, including a trek from Blairgowrie to Fort Augustus, and began to look at bigger challenges. She wanted to spread her wings and fly away, and Iceland seemed like a good place to start.

Iceland, which she visited in 1925, was both a test and a revelation. She was told that she couldn’t walk the 260 miles north from Reykjavik to Akureyri because there were no maps, no guides, and it was far too dangerous. But she proved everyone wrong and then set her sights on another goal: Greenland.

By now, Isobel was making a name as a traveller in the Far North. She had written books about her experiences in both Iceland and Greenland. However, she hadn’t quite finished her Arctic adventures! She made arrangements to travel to Alaska and Northern Canada to explore and again, collect plant specimens. In May 1933, Isobel left Manchester and went by ship, riverboat, train and also plane, to reach Nome in Alaska.

Eventually, she arrived in Barrow, in the north of Alaska, where she transferred to another small vessel before the Arctic Ocean ice began closing in, making it impossible to travel any further. Isobel was forced to stay in a migrant Estonian’s hut for many weeks until the weather situation improved. Although her journey had come to a halt, it was an opportunity for her to visit local Inuit families, walk, travel by dog sled and stay in igloos. Eventually, she continued her Arctic trip with a 120-mile dog sled journey and crossed over into Canada. After many months in the Alaskan and Canadian Arctic she eventually returned to Scotland, having been away for around a year.

Unable to obtain permission from the Soviet authorities to visit Eastern Siberia, Isobel’s next northern journey was in 1936, to the Aleutian Islands, off the coast of Alaska. This thousand-mile long archipelago of both large and small volcanic islands draped like a gigantic necklace between Alaska and the Kamchatka Peninsula in the far east of the USSR. These islands were inhabited by Aleut people on treeless terrain and were exposed to continuous windy, foggy and stormy weather.

The Aleut people of the islands were able to live in such extreme conditions because they managed to catch a range of marine life. Fortunately, she was able to visit many of the inhabited islands by way of US government vessels. Invariably, landing on the islands involved negotiating heavy seas in wild conditions. However, when she did make land, she met with the local inhabitants, generally explored and was able to collect her plants.

The onset of World War Two curtailed any plans for further journeys into the Arctic. After the war, she completed a number of long treks, including walking from her home in Scotland to London, from Innsbruck to Venice, and from Edinburgh to John O’Groats. Isobel Wylie Hutchison passed-away at her home in Carlowrie Castle in 1982, aged 92.

The Arctic journeys of Isobel Wylie Hutchison were extraordinarily daring during a time when such trips were unheard of for a single woman. She developed a real passion for the North as she explored various regions of the Arctic world. Isobel was a true adventure traveller, enjoying the uncertainty of her journey, taking calculated risks, but being utterly intrigued by all she saw in the Far North.

Jean-Baptiste-Point DuSable (November 4, 1745 - August 28, 1818) a frontier trader, trapper, and farmer is regarded as the first resident of what is now Chicago. He was born free in St. Marc, Saint-Dominique. His mother was an African enslaved, and his father was a French mariner. He traveled with his father to France, where he received some education. It was through this education and work that he learned languages including French, Spanish, English, and many Indian dialects.

He arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1765, he learned the colony had become a Spanish possession. Having lost his identification papers and been injured on the voyage, he was almost enslaved. He migrated north, settling in an area near Peoria, Illinois. He lived in what is now Michigan and Indiana as well during the 1770s. He was arrested at what is now Michigan City by British troops who considered him a spy and was imprisoned at Fort Michilimackinac before being released to manage a tract of woodlands in Eastern Michigan. He married a Pottawatomie Indian woman, Kitihawa who was called Catherine in a traditional Pottawatomie ceremony. The couple had a daughter and a son. They married in a Catholic ceremony (1788).

They settled on the shore of Lake Michigan in a marshy area called Eschikagu. He built a home on the north bank of the Chicago River, claimed about 800 acres of land, and established a thriving trading post that included a mill, smokehouse, workshop, barn, and other smaller buildings. The post became a major supply station for other traders in the Great Lakes region. In 1796 their granddaughter became the first child born in Chicago.

He sold his trading post for $1,200 and moved to St. Charles, Missouri. He was commissioned to operate a ferry across the Missouri River. He never prospered as he did in what would become Chicago. •Rain is a former Pokémon trainer who loves their Pokémon, dearly. While exploring the world in order to be the very best is fun and all, internal stress and mental issues had become too much for Rain to handle alongside everything else that naturally comes with adventuring, so Rain found themself having to settle down and focus on something else for a while. At the moment, Rain is pursuing art while still taking care of their Pokémon companions. Rain may no longer be a traveling trainer, but they usually won't say no to a friendly battle if asked. It gets their blood pumping, even now.

•Due to training an electric-type and two poison-types, Rain has grown a resistance to electrical attacks and general Pokémon poison, as well was the toxins specific to the Venipede and Trubbish lines. More specialized toxins, like that of the Salandit line, may still affect Rain as normal, though.

Current Team:

•Jolt: A brave Raichu, and Rain's first ever Pokémon. Rain befriended Jolt while on a trip to Paldea when both were rather young (Rain being a small child and Jolt being a baby Pichu). Jolt was officially registered as a party member after Rain officially became a trainer. Jolt was a valiant fighter, back in the day, but now prefers to relax and nap, though she can still kick butt. She loves spicy food and is happy to try the spiciest food she can find. She often wears a red bow around her neck.

•Pep: A jolly Emboar. She was given to Rain as a Tepig from Professor Juniper, as their official starter Pokémon. Pep loves adventure, and her love of adventure only grew as she traveled with Rain. Rain doesn't travel much, anymore, but they do often takes the scenic route when going from place to place with her, since Pep loves exploration. She has freckles on her face, most prominently on her nose, and she used to wear a white bandana, though she gave it to Tea once she outgrew it. She's kind of like a big sister to Tea. Fun fact: "Pep" is short for "Peppercorn".

•Tea: A gentle Leavanny. He was saved from an attacking Venipede early on in Rain's travels and ended up becoming a part of the team. He went from being the team baby to being the resident mom friend of the group: an absolute caretaker. If something's wrong, Tea is one of the first ones to offer assistance. While he loves all of his friends dearly, he is closest to Pep. He wears the white bandana that Pep gave him proudly.

•Shaped: A docile, shiny Scolipede. Added to the team as a young Venipede, Shaped was never as aggressive as his species would lead one to believe. In fact, he's rather sweet and cuddly! The only problem is his ability: Poison Point. Because of this ability, Shaped can't really cuddle most people or Pokémon without the risk of poisoning them. Luckily, Rain carries gloves and a raincoat in their bag, so they can cover up and show affection to Shaped, regardless. And when a certain Trubbish was added to the team, Shaped was ecstatic, since he could finally cuddle with someone else without any risk, at all.

•Lagomorph: A hardy Garbodor. They were added to the team as a Trubbish, and they're happy to be there for anyone who needs help. It's rare to see Lagomorph upset over something, themself, though it's sometimes unclear whether it's because they're truly taking a given situation in stride or because they simply want to be everyone's cheerleader. He and Shaped often play and cuddle together, greatly enjoying each others' company. They're a couple of sweethearts, the two of them.

•Clover: A quiet Mimikyu. Clover was found and added to the party during a vacation to Paldea. Clover is rather protective of their friends. They were alone for a long time, and now that they have a family of their own, they want to do everything in their power to keep their family in tact. Deep down, they're scared of being abandoned. They love arts and crafts and often help Rain with their creative projects. Rain always keeps the house stocked with fabric and thread so that Clover can maintain their cloak and create new ones. Despite having quite a few cloaks at their disposal, their original Pikachu cloak is Clover's favorite. In addition to that, they wear a green bow around the neck of their costume in order to match with Jolt.

•Kyo: A gentle Meganium, and Rain's psychiatric service Pokémon, registered separately from the main party. Kyo can definitely fight if the need arises, but he wasn't raised for combat and doesn't participate in trainer battles. Since he's registered as a service Pokémon and not a battle Pokémon, he's allowed to stay with Rain despite the usual limit of six on-hand Pokémon. Kyo tends to help Rain calm down when necessary, as is his job, though he also does the same for Rain's battle party when needed. When he's not acting as a service Pokémon, Kyo tends to like watching movies with his friends.

The physical record of Inazuman history is easily the worst of the nations we have so far. Almost every island has been beset by major disasters that have drastically changed their landscapes. As a consequence, the actual purposes of almost all of its truly ancient ruins have been lost. Take the massive complex at Araumi. Despite being one of the largest complexes in all of Inazuma, there is no reasonable purpose to it that can be seen today. The Sacred Sakura couldn’t have existed when the complex was built as it only sprouted 500 years ago. Meanwhile the architectural style of these ruins indicates it was once a part of the Unified civilization. Making them at least 5 times older. It also couldn’t have been for the Perpetual Motion Machine as that was likely built by Khaenri’ah. Which of course existed long after the Unified fell. If neither fit the complex, then we have no clues as to what it could possibly have been used for. With the meaning of such sizable ruins being lost, it's unsurprising that the purposes of other ruins would be lost or distorted due to time. The most noticeable of which should be Fort Mumei. Despite showing very little signs of being a militaristic site, it has still gained the moniker of “Fort”. In this analysis we are going to talk about what Fort Mumei might actually be, and what of its features may have led to the creation of this misnomer.

Why Has it Been Named a Fort?

Before we can get into why it isn’t a fort or what it actually is, we first need to address how the concept of it being a fort first could have come about. I believe there lies 2 distinct possibilities as to how. Location/geography and the ruins' current state.

Location/Geography:

The first war between Watatsumi and the Shogunate was fought over Yashiori Island. The details of the conflict are unimportant here but it ultimately culminated into a Shogunate victory after Orobashi and his generals were slain. However tensions remained high after this victory. Thus, for some time immediately afterwards, the Shogunate likely kept a large military presence upon the island. It’s possible that during this time the ruins were used to house military equipment and personnel. Due to its proximity to Watatsumi it would provide an excellent front line position should any disillusioned denizens of Watatsumi decide to try something. Additionally, the islands surrounding the ruins provide a natural protection against naval attacks by forcing ships to enter in smaller predefined locations. Making it a fantastic place to route an opponent that can only invade by sea. Even temporary bases are often named, and with the large number of personnel that would likely have been stationed upon the island the name this temporary moniker of “Fort Mumei” ended up sticking.

The Ruins Current State:

The other possible reason for this misnomer lies in the current state of the ruins themselves. The ruins at Fort Mumei are almost entirely underwater. Whether this is a result of flooding or the structure itself sinking into the sand and silt is unknown. Whatever the reason, with the majority of the structure out of sight, misconceptions are bound to arise. The average person is likely only going to be viewing these ruins from a distance. Such as the view seen below.

The people who live on Inazuma are very familiar with sea travel as it is the primary mode of transport due to its existence as a nation of islands. Seeing such a structure inside a cove is likely to prompt people into believing that the structure likely served some sort of marine duty. With the stone structures along the red lines maybe serving as anchoring points for docks. The military correlation may have come about both due to its proximity to Watatsumi Island and the presence of several Shogunate shipwrecks surrounding it. The important thing to remember is that the average person isn’t going to be giving much thought to something like this outside of trying to come up with something to call it. As a result the function of the unknown is often made to fit into something that would make sense to them, even if it’s wildly different to the truth. To the average Inazuman, these are simply some waterlogged ruins in a cove.

Why Isn’t it a Fort?

Of course the biggest question of this analysis is why isn’t this a fort, at least not originally. Unlike how its misnomer may have come about, simple observation of the ruins and the surrounding area creates several discrepancies towards the idea that these ruins were used in a militaristic function.

The Water:

If these ruins were originally used as a naval installation, then it makes total sense that it would have sunken at least a little bit over the centuries. But the issue with this complex is that that water was probably never supposed to even be touching it at all. There are several clues hinting towards this having originally been built on dry land. Such as this set of stairs on the northern side that go directly underwater.

Or the fact the circular center platform sits raised upon an ever larger circular platform.

Or this fallen wall carved far too ornately to have then been stuck underwater where it wouldn’t be seen.

Finally, both the north and south sides have walls or lines of decorated pillars that connect to ruins on the surrounding islands. Something that would make no sense to build if the area were originally covered in water.

south side With the unlikely exception of some bizarre religious meaning. It makes no sense why a group of people would intentionally build such structures underwater. It would be ridiculous to expend so many resources creating such ornate structures only to hide them away where people can’t see them. And that's not even getting into how they even built them in the first place.Finally some of you might be wondering how this area could have ever not had water in it. For that we have to turn to the islands surrounding it. The best theory I could come up with is that islands surrounding the ruins were once both much larger and higher up. As a result, they created a natural barrier against the water. Which may have been further built up by the people who once lived there. However thousands of years of erosion have since destroyed most of that barrier, causing the entire area to be flooded. Evidence for this can be seen on the two northern islands. Which are actually still attached by a very shallow sandbank.Where are the Defenses?:There’s no such thing as a military installation without some kind of defensive structure. Now Fort Mumei does have one, the issue is that it’s the only one, and even then it's so far gone that it could easily have been for something else. On the northwestern island lies the remains of a stone tower. With only the base remaining, its true purpose can only be ascertained through guesswork. But what I can say is that it probably wasn’t a defensive tower. It is A. The only stone tower in the entire complex, and B. Is located away from most of the ruins, which would make it useless for anything defense related. It wouldn’t even be useful for lookout as you could just build something on Yashiori Island for that because it’s already higher than the area the ruins are in. Other than this incredibly unlikely candidate, no other defensive installations can be found anywhere within the complex.

Said tower, note how little remains making its function indecipherable So What is it?The Fort Mumei ruins are vast, comparable in size to the largest area of the Windwail Highland ruins (For more on said ruins see my Windwail Highland analysis One Two Three Four). Except unlike at Windwail Highland this is, or at least was, one continuous structure. No matter how prosperous a civilization is, such a large amount of time and resources would never be put towards something that didn’t have importance to the society as a whole.So if Fort Mumei wasn’t a military installation, then what was it? Unfortunately that’s a question we may never know the true answer to. There is no mention of Fort Mumei in contemporary texts and proper exploration of the site is prevented due to the water. That doesn’t mean we can’t make some guesses. In fact I have two of them.Ceremonial Site:The first theory I have regarding the Fort Mumei ruins is that they served a ceremonial and/or religious purpose. This conclusion comes mostly from the layout and location of the main body of ruins.For starters the ruins of Fort Mumei are both simple yet complex at the same time. Consisting of a single central pathway that leads to a large circular space. Such an open space would be a perfect site to perform ceremonies to large groups of people with relative ease. The pathway continues from the platform, heads up some stairs, and stops in front of a raised platform complete with a massive and ornately decorated arch.The arch itself is of important note. Being highly decorated and the only one of its kind within the complex, this archway was likely pretty important. Maybe even the most important part of the structure. This is further reinforced by the fact the central path doesn’t actually go to the platform the arch stands upon.Something to remember is that this complex was probably built about six thousand years ago (being that it’s likely from the unified civilization). Watatsumi Island rose from the ocean only two thousand years ago. Meaning at the time of its construction this was the furthest west you could travel in all of Inazuma. In the likely very culturally diverse place that was ancient Inazuma, it wouldn’t be too odd for there to be some people who saw this as important.

The pathway does not go up to the platform with the arch, instead stopping just before it. There is no proper staircase leading up to this platform as the stones lying atop the path appear to have fallen there as the ruins deteriorated. Before we go into the other theory, let's take a quick dive into a crack-esq theory that popped into my head. I think it’s possible this archway may have been used in ceremonies as a sort of gateway to another world. Because beyond that archway, the world was simply an open ocean as far as the eye could see. Something that would be quite provocative to the imagination and possibly allow for some explanations to unknown phenomena. But seeing as by simply heading a little ways north you will get to land that goes much further west without any water in the way, this holds very little water to it. But I still wanted to mention it.Governmental Site:The other potential use for this site that comes to mind is as a place of governance. The main claim for this comes from the large circular platform as it could have possibly served as a meeting place. The broken pillars present along the edge of the platform give rise to the possibility that it may have once been roofed. This roof was probably wooden as the floor of the platform is still visible and not a lumpy mess. A governmental complex would also give an explanation for the various offshoots to the other islands. With each island being home to a different aspect of the government. If this was the case, then it would explain why the only tower at the site exists in such a bizarre place. This being that it was where the military command structure was based. This theory does fall through a bit more than the ceremonial theory because of its location at the very edge of Inazuma. Being located there would make it much more vulnerable to an enemy attack and its total lack of defenses would make putting it there very risky. But on the other hand it could have been built during a time of prolonged peace where such things simply needn’t be taken into account. But this is all just speculation of course.Conclusion:Bit of a shorter one this time around. Mainly because there’s a lot less to talk about then my previous subjects but also because Tears of the Kingdom is out and I want to spend my time playing that. I've also been trying to use less pictures and more words in my posts which is why some things that would have had pictured references in the past don't in this post. I once again don’t have options for people so I’d love to see some suggestions for stuff to do in the future.
