A large woman steps into view with a cane. She is older. “Hey.”
“Hi,” she moves to her, and hugs her. “How are you?”
“Alright,” she says quickly and moves past her as her eyes set on me. “Oh, my God. So you really are seeing this guy?!” She looks me over, smiling. “Wow, okay….” She offers her hand daintily. “I’m Shannon, her older sister.”
“Hi,” I nod with a poster grin.
“Glad you made it in today,” She smiles broadly. “So, what are you making tomorrow?”
“Same as usual, I guess?” she shrugs. She clearly did not want to do that. “Are my bikes still here?”
“Yep, in the garage,” she chuckles.
“Darling?” I chuckle. She turns and I jiggle the car keys. She rolls her eyes and gives a humorous smile. She wasn’t kidding, she was on her bike a lot in the United States. She was like a duck to water.
We go upstairs, and I see her apartment.
“It’s not much,” she says quickly. “but I wasn’t done decorating when I decided to leave.” She stops moving. “Who’s that? Who’s up here?”

“Oh, my God, you’re the American girlfriend?!” the man asks.
She gives a small smile. “Please don’t tell anyone he’s here.”
“No problem,” he says with a nod. “Name’s John?”
“Hello, John,” I nod, shaking his hand. “Maintenance?”
“Yeah, your sister called when she said you were coming home.”
“Well, that was nice of her.”
“Yeah, paid up and everything,” John nods.
I watch her frown. I know that she has been sending money home every month, and I see her blink, but resume smiling.
“Thanks so much,” she shakes her head.
“I’d really be thankful if you could—uh—” John pulls out his cell phone. “For my kids?”
“Sure.” I nod, and she takes the phone to take a nice picture of us. I take the phone and ask, “Their names?”
“Johnny and Jillian.”
“Hello, Henry Cavill—or Superman here—“
“Jillian likes you as Sherlock.”
“Ah, elementary,” Henry nods. “Happy Holidays, Johnny and Jillian! You two have a great holiday season! Cheers.”
After she ordered Instacart, I finally got to see her bedroom. I could tell she was a little anxious.

“It’s the only room I kind of decorated before I left,” she says softly after I helped her put the sheets and blankets on the bed. “It was my—”
“Sanctuary,” I finish, looking at the posters. “Six ethics of life?”
She smiles. “Hey, it’s nice to read everyday.” She turns on her computer.
“Life is an adventure or nothing at all,” I read. “Nice way to start writing.”
“Yeah,” she exhales.
As soon as the Instacart order came, she preps for the next day.
“What are you doing?”
She chops ingredients and puts them in plastic bags. She seasons the turkey and puts it in the refrigerator to marinate. She bakes the ham, deciding to use part of it to make breakfast the next day. I help chop things up, put things away, and then I throw her over my shoulder, and get her ready for bed.
“May I ask you something?” I ask as we get in the shower.
“Hmm?” she sighs as she lifts her head up to the warm and streaming water.
“You acted like you couldn’t cook when we had Fawkes in Jersey.” I smooth soap over her after soaping myself.
“I didn’t know my way around your mother’s kitchen, and this is—”
“Your kitchen,” I chuckle at her, and she smiles and nods in agreement as she rinses. “like the one in your apartment in Brixton?”
She rakes my scalp as she looks in my eyes. “And yours in Kensington, yes.”
I close my eyes and enjoy her rinsing me. It’s always a part massage and caress, tension and water going down the drain in one touch. “Uh, you know that’s my kitchen.” I chuckle as she dries my back.
“But I know where everything is, I know the layout. Besides, I am in there more than you.”
“No complaints.” I whisper, spooning her and holding her close under the covers.
“None.”
The next day is full of cooking and baking. She shoos me out of the kitchen so I don’t have much to do except get on her elliptical and watch games.
