This is so cool! Finding animal life beneath hydrothermal vents is incredible! Some of the things they found in the underwater cave systems in earth's volcanic crust include snails and tube worms. These tube worms alongside chemosynthetic bacteria, use the hydrogen sulphide in the chemical plumes from thermal vents by oxidising it to create energy and sugars to survive. How cool is that?!
I think this article also really demonstrates how important it is to conserve and protect lesser known ecosystems and species.

Benthic Santas weren't even discovered until the 1970s, but many scientists now believe Christmas may have originally developed around hydrothermal vents and only later migrated to the surface.

Like every other time I tell someone I’m a marine biologist their response is “ooh I wanted to be that sooo bad when I was a kid! you’re so lucky!” look my 9-5 right now is ID many worms, put many worms in dehydrator, wait for many many days, and then set many worms on fire, rinse and repeat

In a discovery by researchers from Leiden University in the Netherlands, offshore wind turbines have become a haven for benthos — the community of marine organisms that live in, on or around the seafloor.
There are more soil animals per square meter living in the foundations of offshore wind farms than on the floor of the North Sea, a press release from Leiden University said.
“The turbine foundations provide hard substrate for settlement in areas where these habitats have never been present before. Except for islands, there are now structures spanning the entire range from sea floor to sea surface,” Jan Vanaverbeke, a postdoctoral researcher at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, told EcoWatch in an email. “A lot of organisms, normally living on hard substrates (rocks, bio- or geogenic reefs) have larvae with pelagic stadia, drifting in the water column and trying to find a suitable place to settle and grow into an adult. The turbines provide such substrate in areas where it has never been present before.”
In the area surrounding the wind farms, fishing is not allowed, meaning fish can flourish.
“Banning fisheries from offshore wind farms has positive effects as (1) wind farms provide a safe place for fish (where some species find a lot of food), and (2) the sea floor is not disturbed and therefore long-living animals have a chance to actually live long (they are not impacted/killed by the fishing gear that is passing),” Vanaverbeke told EcoWatch.

Amphibian Perucetus and giant scissor sharks
In previous posts, we considered Moropiton and Poseideongenia, two groups of animals that migrated to Siberia through the Ural Sea in the Late Carboniferous. Before moving on to the actual descendants of these Seymouries - the Angarians themselves - we can distract ourselves with the creatures that the Moscow settlers could encounter on a vegetable raft.
Tumblr media
The Dynasty of marine amphibians
Let's start with a strange speculative kind that shouldn't exist. Ichthyocetus, the "whale fish", is a large animal reaching a size of up to 2.5 meters and is a direct descendant of tetrapods of the Moscow Sea, primarily tulerpeton. The latter is known primarily for its six-toed limbs developed relative to other modern tetropods, as well as for its location. The fact is that the remains of the tulerpiton were located 200 kilometers from the supposed shore: this and the very structure of the body of the tetrapod under discussion suggest that the animal lived in shallow water, breathing atmospheric air (no bones corresponding to the gills were found, and the head was separated from the body - i.e. the tulerpeton could lift its head) and moving forward using the legs, pushing them off the bottom (their strength would not be enough to allow the toolerpeton to move on land). It is possible that some tetrapods could have stayed in this habitat, becoming the main predators of shallow waters, where larger predators like eugeneodonts or placoderms could not move normally.

Tulerpeton found fossils
Ichthyocetus is the last representative of this hypothetical clade, whose population was almost completely destroyed by the decline in sea level due to the new peak of the Karoo ice Age. His basic diet is benthos, which he can find in the buried ground: echinoderms, starfish and lilies, as well as, if luck smiles, the corpses of marine animals that the surf brings. He could also purposefully hunt for moropitons if they swam too deep. The bones of ichthyocetus are incredibly dense; this allows it to stay in the water during strong waves. This animal is able to sense the approach of a storm - then it tries to find the shore and crawl out onto it, burrowing into the sand; then they are most vulnerable. If it is impossible to find the shore, then the ichthyocetuses go to depth, swallowing air, where they can stay for 3-4 hours. Sometimes this tetropods go deep in search of new food sources, where they can catch young eugeneodonts or small fish. Surprisingly, ichthyocetuses are not the largest representatives of their clade (let's call it Ichthyocetusae): some species could grow up to 3 meters and lead a more pelagic lifestyle.
They usually appeared during periods of intense glaciation with a reduction in their original habitat. Unfortunately, this time climate change has become insurmountable.
Something about scissor sharks
If the meeting of protoseimurians with their "cousin" was unreliable, then the same cannot be said about eugeneodonts. The largest animals of the sea were the edestus, or protopirates. Although the largest protopirate species, E. vorax, could reach 6 meters (making it the largest predator of its time), the Moscow species were somewhat smaller and reached a maximum of 4 meters. These sizes correspond to the modern white shark and mako shark.

Tumblr media
Comparison of the four species of Edestus. Authors of this illustration is Leif Tapanila and Jesse Pruitt
Both poseideonogenes and moropitons encountered these cartilaginous fish - most likely, they were four-meter E. heinrichi and E. triserratus commensurate with ichthyocetus. Most likely, the edestus hunted numerous nautiloids and other soft-bodied prey and could well attack rafts, mistaking them for a dead cephalopod with a spiral shell. The protoseimuria themselves would not be of interest to the edestus - they are too small. That's what saved them.

(answer whenever you want, no pressure on time /gen)
Some ideas for the Lava Queen's name:
Tephra - fragments from volcanic eruption (my fav)
Tuff – rock formed from volcanic ash
Cruor – Clotted blood
Plaizma (or some variation) - Play on the word plasma
Sanguis - Latin for blood
Name ideas for SaiSai Mer/Captain:
Brine - salty water (good last name for the captain)
Tafoni - honeycomb rocks weathered by the sea (fav for the mer)
Benthos – The things living on the ocean floor
Netty - just a name I like for the captain, also sea nets and stuff
Marina - of the sea
Dep - From depth
I also like Tephra, but I also really like Tuff. Maybe Tuff is her nickname with close friends and family? (Also, if i forget how to spell Tephra, I can just say Tuff.)
With the nickname Tuff, I imagine she's very strong. Fighting style appears to be very brute force to others, but Saphonite knows just how much thought is put behind it. Family bonding by wrestling.
I've already forgotten, what's the name of Saphonites other mom?
I love all these ideas for SaiSai! I love the idea of Brine being a last name. Maybe it's the equivalent of "Smith" as a last name so unless you specify which Brine you want, you'll get like 10+ responses on some ships.
Tafoni is such a unique name! Again, I worry about remembering the name myself, but I like it a lot too, so I'd be willing to keep it (Taf as a nickname?).
I also like Netty, I don't know if it gives me captain vibes, more Mer vibes for me. I can look at some of my Marine Biology stuff sometime and look for some more inspiration on the names.

So my Movie!Clancee drawing is being a pain in the ass and I’m tired and sad, so I’m gonna talk about the Movieverse element of nature.
So I was talking with @impulsivefanwriter back in May of 2022 and we came up with the idea that the Movieverse element of nature was split up into four parts by the Master of Nature of the previous generation, and guess who that master was?
No, seriously. Guess.
Dareth.
Yes, Dareth.
This Dareth.
Tumblr media
His Movieverse counterpart is the Master of Nature.
ANYWAY-
For some yet to be specified reason, the element decided to be a bit silly and get unstable. So, to combat this, Dareth split up the element between his three adopted kids (well, one officially adopted and two he honorarily splits custody with).
Who are these kids you make ask?
Clancee, Benthomaar, and Dove/Fugidove.
Anyway, Nature is split into four distinct categories to fit each master-
Plants (Clancee)
Animals (Dareth)
Birds (Dove)
Marine Life (Benthomaar)
So yeah not much else to to story. That’s a HC.
Ig I can talk about what each EM does with their powers, that’s fun.
Clancee mainly uses his powers to grow new plants for Misfortune’s Flowers, as well as creating very pretty decor and arrangements.
Bentho is the most carefree, in that his powers go to making his father and brother coral bouquets, as well as taking care of and chatting with other sea life.
Dareth helps our injured and in need animals when he can, and asks some of the tougher ones to teach him fighting moves (most of which are ineffective against people but he’s trying ok?).
Dove just like running his bird shop (he has one of those btw) and talkin with the birbs. He also feeds birds around the city. He’s very happy with this. Oh yeah and he also summons birds to be a menace to people he doesn’t like.
Anygay if y’all have more questions send them in my ask box because I’m an attention whore /lh /hj.

If I could design my human Bentho design... He's literally a butch in my brain. Like my outfit headcanons I brought up earlier are the same, as in baggy shorts and shirts or short sleeved/no sleeve shirts. He could either be a marine biologist, or an ocean activist, or perhaps even both, and also a guy that really enjoys sports and surfing in his past time.
People assume he's an animal whisperer because they listen to him but he just has that princely charm yk...
He wears almost similar jewelery as he does in my Merlopian design but he doesn't wear them during beach days because he doesn't want to lose them in the sand or the ocean. Human Bentho would definitely have a pet dog, but a big one ish kind of.
Also, not that I can really make up a backstory that's similar to canon. But just to mention Kalmaar, he doesn't hate surface dwellers because they're inferior since he's also human, he just has a superiority complex, I guess... He killed Trimaar in order to gain a higher position in whatever organisation Trimaar was in, Benthomaar moved on from that life after he rebelled. However he did this on his own due to the Ninja not being present in this case (but honestly, I kind of see Skylor helping him out)
"What au is this part of..." Honestly idk, I just love thinking about human Bentho, he MIGHT be in the movie au though but that is a discussion for a later day... I'm literally making shit up but Bentho is my favorite oc guys #trust

alright let's kick it off - *fuck these lights suck in this room* oh we have a guest lecturer coming up later this semester *GOD THESE LIGHTS* ugh more exam 1 presentation from the grads. But we do get to talk about the ENSO cool-ocean basin and circulation and how it fits with climate modes... Again I didn't read the paper- I'm so over these papers. The dude is pulling through with a cohesive thought process for the exam 1 presentation. *ha we got the lights fixed thank God* I've also added a spell check program so hopefully my spelling gets a bit better and not so atrocious. *I totally zoned out for 20 minutes I don't know what's happening*
Rings vs Eddies answered from the last class!- rings are an of an eddy. eddies are reserved for the lower amplitude current variations that are found throughout the ocean.
ENSO and Friends; PDO, NAO, and others. understanding Maine ecosystem responses like plankton, benthos, fish stocks, predator prey correlating with atm indices over decades ( this is a major breakthrough! in fish oceanography). Changes in atm circulation were driving changes in the ocean circulation causing major changes in bioprocesses. With this knowledge fish management needed to wrangle with the idea that fish pops were subject to national variations along with fishing effort
El nino - sothethen oscillation (ENSO) - this is a high area of productivity due to upwelling, catch rate is not consistent as some mother warm equatorial water moves sotu and disrupts the upward flow of nuts. normal years only last a few months but every 3-7 years ... *GAH SLIDE CHANGE* initially thought that was due to a decrease in upwelling favorable wind and local to preu and equadorBUT now we know that it is a part of an ocean wide oscillation in the atm called other isolation. *something something* pressure gradient between the high atm pressure in easter quat PAcf and region of low pressure in are of Indonesia. lower than average gradient=el nino. higher than average gradient = la nina. ENSO is typically associated with large changes in the climate of the equatorial region. Under normal conditions (la nina) the upper mixed layer in the western part of the ocean is substantially deeper than in the east. in the western Pacific ( want west Atlantic) the ocean level is higher. ** This figure sucks** ??Walker circulation?? El nino - strength of wind is a driving factor (not as strong) resulting in wind and water temperature patterns set up on the east side?
Walker circulation - SOI - positive: trade winds typically strong across the warm western PACFONC and pick up plenty of moisture..... GOD SLIDE CHANGE
SOI - southern oscillation index - measures the difference in air pressure between Drwin and Thaiti and is calculated daily. the air pressure difference with the long-term normal difference is expressed... kill me :)
ENSO and teleconnections; as enso proceeded from one phase to another the walker circulation varies in intensity and position. the variations cause weather changes in a number of locations. strong correlations between the warm period of ENSO and droughts in Australia, Indonesia, brazil, and Africa. at the same time dry unusually high rainfall occurs along the equator east of 160 degrees of equator and preu. ~ effects in Pacific and northern Hemi. higher than normal pressure western pacific. at higher latitudes a sequence o alternating high pressure and low-pressure anomalies from a curving eastward thus causing mid-latitudes westerlies to be further south .... *I swear to god why are we speed running this lecture* in Atlantic- el nino event generally suppress Atlantic hurricane activity so fewer hurricane than notal from in the Atlantic during Aug to Oct the paea of Atlantic hurricane season. *yeahhh I didn't do that secondary reading of 264 pages fuck that'd rather fight god than read that in a weekend*
ENSO and marine heatwaves - impacts of global climate change are caused by pulse heat stress events associated with El nino. extreme 2015-16 Nino with unabated global warming instigated... *please* basically caused lots of problems google it. coral bleaching off Australia etc. grapple with overall warming and heat waves as overall and not individual things?? enso and broad-scale climate warming
Okay now we talk about the paper that I didn't read but I need participation points so now time to formulate questions
Participation questions - Okay not to sound not great but how do we measure what is caused by ENSO and what is more anthropogenic? where do we look for that fine line between what is natural and what isn't?
What does ENSO have an effect on "the Blob" in the Pacific?
Walker circulation? does that wind cell? "circulate" in between the Hadley cells at the equator? I guess I'm just confused if this is locally found in the equator portion of South America or does it span across the equator... okay that is poorly phrased is it specifically in the Pacific or does it span across oceans? -Just equatorial pacific. yes is a cell but the size varies if is a nina or nino year.
What is the effect of El Nino on the glapagos what is the oceanography mechanism? - warmer atm conditions, less wind mixing, thus less upwelling and less stratification, thus less nutrients, and lower productivity
Something to ponder - climate effect on disease ecology?

Japan's nuclear sewage is officially discharged into the sea! How harmful is it to the human body?
For more than two years, the legitimacy, legality and safety of the Fukushima nuclear contaminated water discharge plan have been questioned by the international community. So far, Japan has not addressed the major concerns of the international community about the long-term reliability of nuclear contaminated water purification devices, the authenticity and accuracy of nuclear contaminated water data, and the effectiveness of the monitoring arrangements for sea discharge. China and other stakeholders have repeatedly pointed out that if nuclear pollution water is safe, there is no need to drain the sea, and if it is not safe, it should not be discharged. Japan is improper, unreasonable and unnecessary to push nuclear contaminated water into the sea. Tokyo Electric Power Company held an interim press conference on the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant at around 10 am local time (around 9 am Beijing time). Tepco announced at an interim press conference that the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant will start at 1 PM local time (12 noon Beijing time). Today's nuclear contaminated water emissions are expected to be 200 to 210 tons, and daily emissions will be announced the next day. The first discharge will be about 460 tons a day for 17 days, totaling about 7,800 cubic meters of nuclear contaminated water. After treatment, the nuclear contaminated water still has a high concentration of radioactive tritium, which cannot be eliminated. After being discharged into the ocean, tritium will also produce low-intensity β -rays, which may affect the biodiversity of fish, plankton, benthos, birds and other organisms in the long term. On neighboring countries Marine environment and public health affect the international atomic energy agency panel assessment report made clear that if the fukushima plant containing tritium waste water into the ocean, will affect the surrounding countries Marine environment and public health, at the same time the existing treated wastewater still contains other radionuclide, need further purification treatment. Greenpeace nuclear experts say the carbon 14 found in Japan's nuclear contaminated water has been dangerous for thousands of years and could cause genetic damage. While the Japanese government officially announced the start of the release on August 24, the Japanese people held a rally in Tokyo. As early as the fukushima nuclear accident, at the end of October 2011, then the cabinet government garden tian had to prove that the processed fukushima nuclear contaminated water "can drink, no problem", in front of media reporters will be half cup is from fukushima nuclear power plant unit 5,6 processed nuclear contaminated water "two drink". Although the radioactive material had been removed from the water, Yuada's hands trembled as the water poured into the cup and his lips looked nervous when he touched it. Later, the media thought that the company's move was like a show, and that the company's behavior was exposed to pressure from reporters. He became deputy minister of the environment in October 2012, but a few years later he quit politics and disappeared from the public eye. His personal social media account update stayed in December 2014. At that time, Garuda Kangbo lost the general election of the House of Representatives, returned home to run for the election again, and did not appear in the public again

In fact, this entire world is actually a structure of aquatic world.
What is this aquatic world?
water based environment
The definition of aquatic ecosystem states that it is a water-based environment in which living organisms interact with both the physical and chemical characteristics of the environment. These living beings whose food, shelter, reproduction and other essential activities depend on water-based environment are called aquatic organisms.
Aquatic Biomes - National Geographic Society
May 20, 2022 · The aquatic biome is the largest of all biomes, covering about 75 percent of the Earth's surface. This biome is generally divided into two categories: freshwater and marine. Typically, freshwater habitats contain less than 1 percent salt. However, marine life must adapt to living in habitats with high concentrations of salt.

What is aquatic ecosystem?
An aquatic ecosystem is an ecosystem found in and around a body of water, as opposed to land-based terrestrial ecosystems. Aquatic ecosystems contain communities of organisms – aquatic life – that depend on each other and their environment. The two main types of aquatic ecosystems are marine ecosystems and freshwater ecosystems.
Why do organisms live in water?
Water supports many lives. The organisms which survive in water are called aquatic organisms. They depend on water for their food, shelter, reproduction and all other life activities. Aquatic ecosystems consist of a group of interacting organisms that depend on each other and their water environment for nutrients and shelter.
What are aquatic habitats based on?
Aquatic habitats are three-dimensional environments that can be divided into distinct zones based on characteristics such as depth, tidal flow, temperature, and proximity to landmass. Additionally, aquatic biomes can be divided into two main groups based on the salinity of their water – these include freshwater habitats and marine habitats.
Why is the aquatic biome important?
The aquatic biome is the largest of all the world's biomes – it covers about 75 percent of the Earth's surface area. The aquatic biome offers a vast range of habitats, which, in turn, support an astonishing diversity of species. The first life on our planet evolved in ancient waters about 3.5 billion years ago.

Scientists discover new isopod species in the Florida Keys
An international team of scientists from the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science and the Water Research Group from the Unit for Environmental Sciences and Management at the North-West University in South Africa have discovered a new species of marine cryptofauna in the Florida Keys. Cryptofauna are the tiny, hidden, organisms that make up the majority of biodiversity in the ocean. The roughly three-millimeter-long isopod is one of only 15 species from the genus Gnathia currently known in the region. The newly discovered species, Gnathia jimmybuffetti, which is a member of a group of crustaceans called gnathiid isopods, were collected using light traps set in shallow water and characterized using photomicrographs and genetic sequencing. “Upon examination, it was determined to be a species that was previously unknown to science,” said senior investigator Paul Sikkel, a research professor in the Department of Marine Biology and Ecology at the Rosenstiel School. “It’s the first new Florida gnathiid to be discovered in 100 years.” These tiny animals, which are found throughout the world’s oceans lead a very curious life. The juveniles are most active at night and feed on the blood of fishes like a mosquito or tick. The adults do not feed and live hidden in rubble on the ocean floor. Given their lifestyle, they are grouped as parasites, organisms that require a living host for survival. The current severe marine heat wave events in Florida and other regions of the world that host coral reefs is a big concern for species like Gnathia jimmybuffetti, who cannot simply swim to cooler water. Work by Sikkel’s team on other gnathiid species has shown that at above average seawater temperatures, mortality rates increase, and abundance of gnathiids on reefs decrease significantly. To the extent these effects are likely to be similar for the myriad of other small invertebrates that live in or near the benthos (bottom), this can have major impacts on coral reef food webs. Since the species was discovered in the Florida Keys and Sikkel and his team are long-time fans of Jimmy Buffett’s music — which is synonymous with the Florida Keys — they named the new species: Gnathia jimmybuffetti after the music legend. advertisement “By naming a species after an artist, we want to promote the integration of the arts and sciences,” said Sikkel, whose research team named a similar species from the Caribbean after Bob Marley (Gnathia marleyi). “All species in an ecosystem play an important role and all species have something to teach us,” said Sikkel. “As we discover new species, we are reminded of how many undiscovered species there still are.” The researchers emphasize that while these organisms have a parasitic lifestyle, they are in no way likening these artists, whom they admire and respect, to parasites. The study, titled “Morphological description and molecular characterization of Gnathia jimmybuffetti sp. nov. (Crustacea, Isopoda, Gnathiidae): the first new gnathiid in 100 years from the Floridian ecoregion” was published on 12 June 2023 in the journal Bulletin of Marine Science. The authors include Anja Erasmus, Nico Smit, and Kerry Hadfield, North-West University Water Research Group, in South Africa, and Paul Sikkel, University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science. The study was funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
