listen! MARco, MARcel, MARlowe, MARley: do they only point to war from the god mars (ares), as in martial? three boys dead in marley's war, and only marcel knew it. the seven visible planets have their metals in medieval alchemy: ♂ is iron, the stuff of weapons and armor, spear and shield, forged in fire into steel.
or, is it also the sea: marinus, where we get marine, maritime, and ultramarine, the precious pigment from ground lapis lazuli named not for its deep blue color, but for coming to europe from beyond the sea (the middle east). armin is even an anagram for the old french marin.
add nile dok's widow, MARie, ymir fritz's daughter and wall MARia: marley attacked maria, eren of maria attacked marley. maryam, mother of god. hildegard von bingen called her stella maris, sea star. or the scout squad leader who died in shiganshina, MARlene, whose name i chuckled at as if yams just googled famous germans, but i want to give him credit for this repetition. it's too beautiful and double edged.

Headcanon that Levi's sense of humour is that of a 12-year-old part II
Erwin: Marie, Nile Dawk's wife, is coming over for tea tomorrow at my house. Would you like to come by and meet her?
Levi: Tsk, what, she's not getting enough Nile Cock?
Erwin, stopping dead in his tracks: Levi, PLEASE--
Levi, sniggering at himself: Heheuh come on, that's funny. I can't wait to see h--
Erwin: Uninvited.

On a much lighter note I’m rereading the middle school au and there’s this chapter about Nile that starts with Ilse and Erwin accusing him of having an affair with Frieda
Tumblr media
because Frieda was picking flowers as a way to congratulate him on his soon to be born baby. But Marie actually thinks this is serious so he needs to fix it. So Hannes offers to help
Tumblr media
and by “help” I mean he has Isle write an article saying Nile couldn’t be cheating with a younger when because he only likes much older women.
But then Pixis offers to help and of course being Pixis...
Tumblr media
he has an article written about how Nile is actially only interested in titans.
So then Zackly offers to help...
Tumblr media
Adorable ♥ socks!!
Meanwhile Marie still won’t let him back in the house. So Erwin offers to help not with an article, but by getting Marie to let him back in to talk. But they start fighting when she’s out of the room and when she comes back....

Nile Dok and his family in the Sims 3. Marie and their children’s appearances were never officially shown in the manga or anime but I based Marie’s appearance off of multiple fanart I see on pixiv. Their daughters were born in-game.

Erwin sent love letters to Marie really? idk but thinking about Erwin doing that is kind of funny lmao
Oh no, wait! He wanted to write one himself, but couldn't find words, so he wrote one to help out Nile. 😅
Poor dude.
It was in a Smartpass AU. It's sweet. :)

this is my erwin x marie headcanon
Tumblr media
Do you have any headcanons about Erwin and Marie's relationship? While we never got much material concerning her, I always wondered about what occurred between them and if Erwin had any regrets. Maybe his feelings influenced his relationship with Levi?
All we know from canon is that Erwin was, in his own words, “quite taken by” Marie, and that according to Nile he “chose Titans over her”.
Tumblr media
And from the later Smartpass story, Erwin’s Letter, we know that Erwin put his own feelings for Marie aside and helped Nile to write a love letter to her.  There’s no indication whether Marie ever reciprocated, or was even aware of Erwin’s feelings for her.  The Smartpass story also tells us that he never regretted his decision to join the Survey Corps.
There’s so little to go on that I’m afraid I haven’t really got any canonverse headcanons about Erwin and Marie.  I guess at best I’ve always seen this as a youthful attraction, although it’s clear that later in life Erwin continued to hold considerable affection for Nile, Marie and their children.
I don’t think Erwin’s feelings for Marie influenced his relationship with Levi, but it does provide an interesting contrast.  The Smartpass story says
Even so, Erwin doesn’t regret his decision. He joined the Survey Corps, and devoted his life to finding out the truth about this world. He understands that this objective contradicts with having and protecting one’s family.
Which is a striking contrast to his words to Levi “Let’s save the world together”. Erwin’s relationship with Levi isn’t contradictory to the aims of the Survey Cops and his quest to discover the truth of the world, quite the opposite, it’s a joint endeavour that they undertake together.
Although I don’t really see Marie as having a significant impact on Erwin’s life in canon, I do have a bit of a tendency to give their relationship more weight in fic.  I’m afraid I’m guilty of writing this as a failed relationship, though not through any fault of Marie’s.  In both Cardamom and Sealskin, Erwin chooses to end the relationship, not because he doesn’t love Marie, but because he doesn’t love her enough and can’t give her the kind of relationship he knows she wants, which sadly is how many adult relationships end.
I guess in both canon and fic Erwin and Marie were looking for different things in life, and Erwin was honest enough to realise that.

Rivetra Week Day 05 | Alone
Duelverse: Levi decides to make an effort to do what is expected of him, only to find he’s already too late.
Social gatherings were never something that interested Levi Ackerman, particularly balls, fêtes, soirees, galas, or whatever other ridiculous name Marie Zakarius tacked onto her extravagant parties. He would have thought, being married to one of the most introverted men Levi’d ever met, that she would have been tamed but no, instead of reducing her hostessing to luncheons and garden teas, Mike bent to her will and allowed her to run rampant, filling their home with everyone she had ever spoken to.
Or so it seemed.
Normally Levi would have ignored the invitations. Had it been anyone else, he wouldn’t have even opened it, but in a society where absence was insult, he too, bent to her will and showed up, if only for an hour or so, to spare himself the headache of her offense.
Tonight was not much different than any of her other events; Mike always made sure to have plenty of tables for cards that the quieter, less social gentlemen like himself could tuck themselves away without appearing rude and it was at these card tables Levi spent most of his time, and made quite a fortune doing so.
There came a time, however, where he had to break from the smoke laden card tables and refresh himself with the sort of air he was supposed to breathe.
With champagne in his hand, swiped from a passing servant, he made his way out onto one of the Zakarius ballroom balconies and stared into the night, the party now a low hum in the background.
There were lovers in the gardens below, he noticed, but so entranced were they with each other they weren’t any bother to him. His mother was inside and as he took a sip from the crystal flute, he thought he ought to dance with her before he left. Maybe twice.
She liked that.
He let out a deep sigh, downing the bubbly and gripped the marble rail, hanging his head and wishing he were better at these sorts of things. It certainly would make life easier.
“I’m sorry, My Lord am I disturbing you?”
With a soft grunt, Levi lifted his head, turning to the voice that had come out of seemingly nowhere. A young woman stood by him, copper hair spun up into a formal weave of braids and curls, dotted with tiny diamonds. Her hands were clasped at her front, honey eyes large and concerned.
“I came out to get some fresh air, but if you would rather I left I can.”
He hadn’t even known she was there.
“It’s not you,” he said gruffly, “lost in my thoughts.”
“Oh, she replied with a soft laugh, “that’s good then. It would be a shame for someone not to enjoy such a lovely feast.”
Levi snorted, “You must be new here then. Wait a week she’ll have another. They’re all the same.”
An interesting look came over this girl’s face then, one that was not the feigned insult of a society lady bred to play men, nor a flirtatious agreement. She looked surprised.
“You don’t care for Lady Zakarius then,” she concluded, taking in his condescending tone.
“I don’t care for her extravagance,” he corrected, leaning against the rail, “she peacocks.”
The corner of her mouth tipped up in a knowing, challenging smile.
“Yet you still attend, My Lord.”
Again, she was not flirting. She was calling him out.
“When Marie expects you to attend,” he snapped, “you attend.”
The girl quirked a brow at his informal speech towards the Countess of Utgard. Through his disdain, they were close, it seemed.
“Well how lucky you are,” she offered, “for Her Ladyship to count you among those she holds dear.”
Levi pursed his lips. Lucky? That was debatable. Still, he supposed to a nobody like this one, being in the inner circle he was was a coveted position.
“What’s your name?” he asked, the frown he so often sported not moving from his face, but not deterring her in the least.
“Petra Ral,” she replied with a curtsey, “my father is Peter Ral, of Ral Silks.”
“And how,” he wondered, “did the daughter of a silk trader manage an invitation to this?”
There was no denying there was money to be made in the trades of luxury goods; silk was particularly profitable, but while money could certainly buy you an estate to rival any nobleman’s home, it could not buy you a pedigree and Levi knew that Marie very rarely dealt with anyone without one.
It was hypocritical of her, he thought, not being of noble blood herself, but maybe that was why she was so obsessed with the world in which lineage was everything.
Petra stepped forward, pistachio gown rustling as she did, and looked over the edge of the balcony, to the giggling couples below.
“I don’t know,” she said honestly, “I’d never met her until tonight.”
Ugh. That meant the countess was up to something. Levi hated when she was up to something.
He didn’t say anything, not wanting his own personal bitterness to ruin the fascination this girl so obviously had and she didn’t seem to mind his silence, standing comfortable beside him, taking in the great gardens of the Zakarius estate.
She didn’t initiate further conversation either, sensing he had little use for small talk and he appreciated this. She wasn’t trying to weasel her way into anything and he wondered if she even knew who he was. She addressed him as a lord (though it was a mere courtesy title until his uncle kicked the bucket) but hadn’t used his name.
Or maybe she did know who he was and was simply not deterred by his violent reputation or his curt manner. No, this couldn’t be it. She was remarkably at ease in his presence. If anything she thought him the bored son of some fat man at the card table. Another useless fop.
“Miss Ral!”
Petra turned her attention to the archway where Lady Zakarius herself stood in all her glittering blonde glory, wiggling her fingers in the air and cooing at the very sigh of her.
“I beg your pardon darling,” she addressed Levi, “but I need to borrow Petra for a moment.”
Levi shrugged and the young miss allowed herself to be practically dragged back into the party by her hostess.
“It was lovely to meet you, Lord Ackerman!” she called back to him, “until next time!”
Levi blinked.
She had known.
Wiping his chin with his thumb he pushed off the rail and stood on the fringes of the ballroom, following the two women with his eyes, wondering what in all the levels of Hell—
Oh.
Of course.
He watched as Marie laid a gentle, affectionate hand on what was left of Erwin’s right arm, her smile practiced and demure as she introduced the silk girl to the great Duke. He bowed and took her hand, leading her into the floor. Petra herself smiled with an appreciative sort of radiance, barely seeming to notice the fact that the gentleman only had one arm, and danced with all the grace of any of the other ladies here.
Levi shrugged and made his way back onto the balcony. It didn’t bother him. No one expected anything of him, so it was only natural he wouldn’t have any girls stolen away to be introduced to him. It was better this way anyway. He had no intentions of marrying, despite being solely responsible for continuing the Ackerman line, and didn’t have any interest in simpering maidens desperate for his attention.
Still.
It was always Erwin. He shouldn’t have been jealous, as he didn’t care, but it was always Erwin he was passed up for, every time. They were close, always together it seemed, but in matters of estate and romance, Levi was either patted on the head or avoided entirely, his violent reputation preceding him.
It was because of these musings and this unwanted agitation that he sat on this for two hours, debating with himself until finally he reached a conclusion he’d never reached before.
He wanted to speak with that girl, that Petra, again.
She was at the punch bowl with Erwin, still, and he thought perhaps it might be bad form to reclaim her attention so instead he went searching for his hostess. She knew everyone and everything. She’d help him.
Marie was easy to locate, dancing her heart away in the arms of her closest friend, Nile Dawk while his pregnant wife rested her feet in the salon.
“I need you,” Levi muttered, interrupting the dance and hauling her off to an unused drawing room, ignoring the dissatisfied huff from Nile at his rudeness.
“Need me.” Marie repeated as he latched the door, quirking a brow. Levi never needed her for anything, “what could you possibly need from me?”
Levi stared for a moment, as if she’d somehow guess what it was he wanted (she was stupidly good at that sort of thing), but when it became apparent she had absolutely no idea why he had shut them away he realized he was going to have to be vocal about his desires.
“You know everyone,” he said, his voice flat and bored, as if he shouldn’t have to fucking spell it out for her.
“Everyone of importance yes,” she replied.
“The silk girl,” he continued, “Ral.”
“Petra,” Marie corrected, “her name is Petra.”
He knew that.
“I want—“ he paused. Why did he want this? Because it was time for a change? Because at twenty-seven it was time for him to think about settling into his duty? Or was it simply because this girl was the first female he hadn’t grown up with who hadn’t displayed either fear or desperation in his presence.
“I want you to arrange a meeting with her,” he continued, “a tea or luncheon.”
For a moment, Marie’s face was entirely blank, grey eyes showing no indication she had even heard him, but as she registered what he said, her shoulders dropped and she let out a soft sigh.
“You wish to court her.”
Levi set his jaw and with a stiff nod, confirmed it.
“I—“ her voice barely surpassed a whisper as she fumbled with what to say, “I would like very much for you to. She’s. . .well she doesn’t have any titles but it’s a good match. She’d be good for you.”
He nodded again. “Good.”
She let out another sigh and bit down on her bottom lip, an apology spread across her face.
“But you can’t.”
“What.”
“You. . .can’t,” the countess repeated, “You can’t court Petra.” She lowered her eyes to the carpet below her slippers. “She has to marry Erwin.”
“Erwin.” Levi’s voice was nearly flat, bordering on irritated.
Marie’s bottom lip quivered and he knew she was close to tears. Then again, when wasn’t she?
“It was part of our arrangement,” she confessed.
‘When you fucked him.”
She closed her eyes, pretending he hadn’t said that. “When he gave me what I needed, I swore to help him secure a bride of his choosing. Petra is his choice.”
Levi let out an angry breath through his nose, looking away from her. Why should he suffer because of her selfishness?
“I am sorry,” she told him, “but I don’t regret my actions. I did what I had to in order to secure my husband’s happiness.”
“Somehow I doubt Mike would be very happy to know his boys are Erwin’s,” Levi spat. Marie moved forward to slap him for such a comment but he caught her by the wrist and pushed her back.
“Help Erwin then,” he snapped, unlocking the door and pulling it open, “leave me out of your filthy lies.”
He re-entered the hallway, slamming the door behind him and without sending a footman to retrieve his topcoat and hat, saw himself out. He had thought to make an effort to survive in this society of pigs, to ask help from a woman who always called herself his friend, but the truth was, they were all snakes.
And he was better off alone.

I read that Smartpass thing about Erwin's letter to Marie (I don't think this was the one that I saw on Twitter and posted about before...) and...Erwin kinda implied that Nile wasn't much of a talker during their younger days. Which, in my opinion, shows that the one who made the first move was Marie. Marie indeed chose Nile rather than Erwin...as opposed to the usual, most-accepted notion in the fandom that Nile "stole" Marie from Erwin (which is pretty rude on Erwin and Nile's relationship, btw). Nile, being the quiet person he is, just accepted her advances...though I'm sure he's conflicted if he had assumed that Marie would had preferred his best friend, who had presented himself well enough for a woman's admiration...compared to himself. And I guess those advances paid off? Nile eventually married Marie, though his non-talkative side is not helping him much in telling her that his feelings are always mutual. So Erwin had to help him in that once in a while...which of course, sorta made Nile's assumption that his boyfriend DOES have a thing for Marie, truer by the years. So yeah. A quiet, emotionally suppressed Nile. I can see that. Totally.
