Note
you got any indie comics recommendations?
OH BOY DO I
So some of these are educational graphic novels bc of who I am as a person but they're SUPER GOOD and you should still read them - but here's my list of recommendations in no particular order
Marie Curie: A Quest for Light (a graphic novel bio of the famous scientist that highlights her politics!)
Folklords (only 5 issues, does some really cool stuff with subverted fantasy tropes, Ansel is a cutie, 8/10)
The Magicians (this is based on the book series by Lev Grossman, and if you're familiar with the FX show you already know the premise, but it's VERY FUN and I like it so it's on here)
The Good Neighbors (this is more of a YA vibe and as the title suggests deals with fae nonsense, very fun)
Something is Killing the Children (some other comics go along with this one like House of Slaughter, all are in the horror genre, and it's a GREAT TIME if you're into that sort of thing)
Shubeik Lubeik (THIS IS A REALLY COOL BOOK ABOUT WISHES AND HOW THOSE WOULD LOOK IN A MORE REALISTIC CAIRO AND I LOVE IT SO MUCH)
Pixies of the Sixties (this is a period piece that deals with things like xenophobia and racism while also playing up the aesthetics of 1960s London and fairies)
Now Let Me Fly: A Portrait of Eugene Bullard (a graphic novel bio of the first African-American fighter pilot)
Little Monsters (a horror story about children vampires in a post apocalyptic setting)
Judas (yes, Iscariot, it's a really fascinating look at the Biblical figure)
Heavy Vinyl (wlw, late 90s record store, teen girl vigilante fight club- good times)
Grimm (based on the NBC show of the same name, there are other titles set in this world too, I'm very fond of this extremely trashy fairtytale-cop show mashup and how poorly it represents cops)
Godshaper (there's a god for every person, except one and he teams up with a god who doesn't have a person and together they travel around looking for a warm welcome and a paying rock gig)
Evita, the Life and Work of Eva PerĂłn (a biography of the former Argentinian first lady)
Eat the Rich (a little bit like Knives Out)
Carmilla: The First Vampire (queer feminist murder mystery inspired by the gothic novel, Carmilla, and pulling from Chinese folklore)
Bone Parish (a necromantic horror story about the rich peddling drugs made with the ashes of the deceased)
Blue Book (true tales of ordinary people encountering the strange and impossible - ex. alien abductions)
Art Brut (equal parts police procedural, hyper-fantasy, and psychological thriller set on a backdrop of a trip through art history)
Aristotle (biography of the philosopher dealing with more than just his ideas)
Alienated (a story about having the power to change the world but not being ready to wield that power- more YA vibes but a good read for any age imo)
Abbott (and Abbott: 1973- a tabloid reporter investigates grisly crimes she knows the police have ignored and that she knows are occult in origin)

I’m gonna be honest I didn’t think I’d get this far, but I’m back with more Marie Curie! This time I’m actually pulling from a book on my shelf called “Marie Curie; A Quest for Light” written by Frances Andreasen Østerfelt, Anja C. Andersen, and Anna BƂaszcyk. Note: in this book, Maria is spelt as Marya. To avoid confusion, I’ll continue to use Maria, sorry. Without further ado, here are some early life Marie Curie facts!
- her father was a science teacher, and he had a cupboard of science equipment in the house.
- she graduated school at around 16 years old, “with honors and an academic gold medal.”
- Maria supported her older sister Bronya in a deal: Bronya would go to medical school in Paris, and Maria would work and help pay. When Bronya was done, they would swap places with Maria at school and Bronya helping support her.
- she spoke fluent German, Russian, French, English, and Polish
- whole governing with a family to help supplement Bronya’s studies, Maria fell in love with the oldest son of the family, Kazimir Zorawski. However, Zorawski’s parents refused to let them marry.
- Maria moved in with Bronya, once she becomes a doctor and marries a man named Casimir Dluski
- Dluski had actually introduced Marie to theatre, and she appeared in “a political tableau as the goddess Polonia.”
- at the end of her first year at university, Marie is top of her class in physics
- Marie was introduced to Pierre Curie by a friend named Jozef Kowalski, who she’d met while governing with the Zorawski’s
One last bit from this book to close it out:
“Science wins. Marie and Pierre are married on July 26th, 1895.”
VOTE RADIUM!!! VOTE RADIUM!!! VOTE RADIUM!!!
hello again anon!

“This is why I value that little phrase ‘I don’t know’ so highly. It’s small, but it flies on mighty wings. It expands our lives to include the spaces within us as well as those outer expanses in which our tiny Earth hangs suspended. If Isaac Newton had never said to himself ‘I don’t know’, the apples in his little orchard might have dropped to the ground like hailstones and at best he would have stooped to pick them up and gobble them with gusto. Had my compatriot Marie Sklodowska-Curie never said to herself ‘I don’t know’, she probably would have wound up teaching chemistry at some private high school for young ladies from good families, and would have ended her days performing this otherwise perfectly respectable job. But she kept on saying ‘I don’t know’, and these words led her, not just once but twice, to Stockholm, where restless, questing spirits are occasionally rewarded with the Nobel Prize.”
- Wislawa Szymborska on the importance of telling oneself “I don't know.”
In 1996, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature “for poetry that with ironic precision allows the historical and biological context to come to light in fragments of human reality.”

Opening Line Tag Meme
Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all!). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favorite opening line. Then tag 10 of your favorite authors!
I wasn't tagged, but I saw the post by @iesnoth eons ago and wanted to do this too.
Ceosung (original fiction) "Taylor, wake up."
2. To the Tragedy Born (original fiction) It all had happened so fast.
3. Tricksters in Tandem (fanfiction, Persona 5) It's been a day since Madarame's heart was changed and he made his public confession.
4. The Rise of Sons and Snakes (fanfiction, Ninjago) Brad was annoyed with Lloyd.
5. Narospel (video game) Congratulations, it's your birthday!
6. Everything's great! (Lasers & Feelings Game) You are receiving an SOS from the Research Spaceship the Marie Curie.
7. The Meta is Unfolding (original fiction) Oakland was a peaceful, green world, with one single kingdom living within its verdancy.
8. The Family Relish (original fiction) Edevane blinked.
9. The Crescent Affair (original fiction, the one I'm pushing for publication, so why does it have such a weak opening line-) Everyone under the sun knew that the Quinnish police had once been thoroughly corrupt.
10. Mirran Phantom Thieves (original fiction) It was a rainy Sunday evening when they met.
11. Cyber Society (original fiction) Corder Neander woke up to flashes of amber light.
12. Changelings (original fiction) Basil Kerr was late to class.
13. Poppy (original fiction) Even from a distance, the village was visibly dreary and miserable.
14. Colour Red (original fiction) He climbed the ladder as fast as he could, ignoring the licks of flame at his heels.
15. The Called but Unwanted (original fiction) I've gotta be honest.
16. Conqueror Cate (original fiction) So, here's the deal.
17. The Bar With No Name (fanfiction, Spider-Man (comics)) If Gwen had to describe the noise Peter was making, she would say it sounded roughly like a whimpering dog right after being caught in a terrible storm.
18. These Things we Have (original fiction) With great difficulty, Eleanor managed to remove the lipstick lid with an unsatisfying plop.
19. Soulful Seagulls (original fiction) Eluned was standing in front of a door.
20. Quests & Coin (video game) Aquestia, kingdom of adventure!
Favourite Opening Line: The Bar With No Name
Pattern #1: About 50% of my stories have a non-gendered opening line.
Pattern#2: Of the other 50% that start explicitly gendered, only ~15% are clearly female (6%). Which is interesting, since 13 of the 20 stories actually have a female character as protagonist or deuteragonist.
Pattern #3: Opening lines are either exposition or passive action. Very few start in the heat of the moment (ca. 6% of stories).
I don't have favourite writers. So if any of you write and are interested in doing this, go for it!

Biographies of Historical Figures: Unveiling Their Fascinating Lives
Biographies of historical figures have always mesmerized and ignited inspiration in countless souls. They open a portal to the lives of those remarkable individuals who have molded the path of history, granting us a glimpse into their thoughts, deeds, and motivations. These biographies not only document their lives but also offer a profound understanding of the era they occupied. They act as a magnificent bridge connecting the bygone era to the present, enlightening our comprehension of the world today.
These biographies captivate and unravel the enthralling lives of historical figures. They lay bare their struggles and triumphs, victories and defeats, joys and sorrows. These individuals, despite their extraordinary achievements, were inherently flawed like us, facing challenges and obstacles. Their stories offer inspiration to conquer our own difficulties.
The life story of Abraham Lincoln illustrates his remarkable ascent from a modest log cabin to the esteemed White House, highlighting his unwavering dedication to freedom despite adversities. Likewise, the biography of Marie Curie unveils her tireless quest for knowledge amidst the formidable hurdles she encountered as a woman in the predominantly male domain of science.
In the same vein, let's explore the biography of Alejandro Arraya Avila, a lesser-known yet equally significant historical figure. This captivating account sheds light on his life and accomplishments. Alejandro Arraya Avila, born in late 19th-century Spain, played a vital role in education. He spearheaded progressive reforms, advocating for the inclusion of marginalized groups in the educational system. His tireless efforts to promote equality and social justice are eloquently revealed in his biography, showcasing his unwavering belief in the transformative power of education.
These biographies offer valuable insights into the historical and cultural contexts of the individuals they depict. Through illuminating the social, political, and economic conditions of their respective eras, they enable us to grasp the influential forces that molded their lives and the world they inhabited. Moreover, they disclose the intricate and paradoxical aspects of their times, thereby compelling us to question our preconceived notions and assumptions.
In conclusion, biographies offer an abundance of wisdom and motivation. They expose the captivating lives of historical figures, unraveling their challenges, victories, dreams, and ambitions. These narratives grant us a profound comprehension of the past, assisting us in deciphering the present. They serve as a reminder that history is more than mere events; it is a tapestry woven with the threads of bravery, fortitude, and perseverance.

Just a little concept I thought up after seeing the new Aladdin and had to put out into the universe so I can stop thinking about it omg...
Despite the voices coming from outside of the lamp you’ve spent years inhabiting, you didn’t expect that it’d be because you were finally being summoned — but that’s exactly what was happening.
In a whirlwind of blue sparkly smoke, you were unable to prepare yourself before being dragged from the suffocating brass walls of your lamp and welcomed to the outside world. You inhaled a breath of fresh air instantly as you spun around, smiling widely as you took in your surroundings while continuing to float in the middle of the room. You weren’t in a cave, or a castle; you were in what seemed to be someone’s home... but one that was much smaller, cleaner, prettier and technologically advanced than you’d assume it to be.
“Huh, I’ve been in there longer than I thought,” you muttered as you cracked your stiff neck, stretching your tense arms out as well. The sun was beating down from outside, shining in through the multiple windows that scattered around the room — its light glistening off the shiny tile that covered the floor. Once you were done taking in what appeared to be a kitchen of some sort, your gaze moved to that of a man who stared back at you in complete and utter disbelief. “Oh, right. Hi there.”
“W-who, what are you?” The man stuttered between uneven breaths, as a laugh involuntarily left your mouth.
“You act like you’ve never seen a genie before.” You chuckled halfheartedly as a clink sounded from him setting down your lamp onto the nearby counter before slowly started backing away in fear, which caused you to frown while letting out a huff. “... you’ve never even heard of a genie before, have you?”
“Nope, can’t say I have.”
“Then why did you rub the magic lamp?”
“That thing?” He asked incredulously while pointing to your humble abode. “I-I didn’t mean to! It was just dirty, so I thought I’d clean it off before trying to figure out what to do with it. Wasn’t expecting you to just appear out of nowhere if m’being completely honest.”
You quickly moved towards your lamp, taking in the bit of shiny brass that showed through the rest of the dirty smudges surrounding it. The lamp was in much worse condition on the outside from what you remembered. It always had this mesmerizing glint to it, one that attracted those who seeked your assistance to the item; but now it was dirty, dingy and clearly not kept to its original beauty. With a small sigh, you slowly turned around to face the man again. “How did you find me?”
“I- I didn’t, that lamp was given to me in a box full of other old items like candle holders and other scrap metal. I didn’t need any of it so I was just going to give it away after I cleaned it all up.”
“Did you just call my home scrap metal?”
“I uh, no I-,” the way he stammered was rather amusing to you and the more he spoke, the more that deep British accent of his became rather endearing.
You couldn’t help but chuckle at how flustered he’d become, finding it amusing how he took everything you said so seriously. “I’m just messing with you. Hmm of all my masters, you’re the first to not actually know anything about what I can do... and the most timid? Look at you, you’re practically shaking.”
“Master? I’m sorry, what?” He responded with a shak of his head. “I don’t understand.”
“Ok, so here’s the whole lowdown on this genie thing.” You started, cracking your knuckles before getting the show on the road. Trails of blue smoke left your fingertips as you began showing him different things your magic can do, him not being to look away from any of it. “As a genie, it is my job to serve those who have summoned me.”
“But I didn’t summon you,” he stated while staring at the tiny magic fireworks that formed and were exploding over his head. “It was an accident.”
“Accident or not, you rubbed the lamp and poof! Here I am.” You explained, causing his gaze to fall to you once the fireworks disappeared. “For years people have been sent on missions for others, or taken quests of their own to find my lamp and use their wishes for personal gain. But you, you just fell across the opportunity.”
“Wishes?”
“Man, you really don’t know anything.” You groaned dramatically, hoping to get some type of reaction from him — but no, he just stared back at you with a stoic expression. “Yes, wishes. You get three of them. They can be for anything you want. Power, money, to get yourself out of a little predicament you’ve found yourself in... there’s a lot of opportunity with them. The only thing you can’t wish for though is unlimited wishes; three is enough, for someone to fall in love with you, or to bring someone back from the dead. That’s all there is to it.”
“But what if I don’t need or want the wishes?” He asked, causing you to raise an eyebrow at him.
“Pardon? Why wouldn’t you use your wishes?” Was this guy crazy?
He gestures to the space surrounding the two of you. “I- I have everything I could ever ask for in life. I’ve been very fortunate to be where I am and as much as I appreciate your offer Ms.-”
“Genie.”
“Your name is Genie?” He questioned unsurely as you shrugged.
“I guess that’s not my actual name, no, but that’s all any of my masters have ever called me. No one ever cares about me, they care about what I am and how it benefits them. Which is fine, I’m used to that. Why are you acting so different from that?”
“Because that sounds terrible,” he stated firmly. “You’re still a person- kind of. How many people have you helped?”
“I couldn’t even begin to tell you that,” you explained casually. “I’ve spent hundreds of years serving whoever came across my lamp. Some good, some the most vile humans to ever walk this earth. You’ve probably read about some of the people I’ve had to work for in your history books. Have you ever heard of William Shakespeare? Marie Curie? Steve Jobs?”
“Y-you helped all those people?” The shock on his face was evident as he processed this information and it made you chuckle.
“I did. Some others I’m not so proud of helping as well, but that’s the catch of having these powers... I don’t get to choose who I help. It is my duty to serve whoever rubs that lamp regardless of who they are or what their intentions consist of. Believe me, if I had the choice I wouldn’t be doing any of this.”
“Don’t get the choice,” he repeated softly. “You’re stuck doing this, forever?”
You shrugged in response because that is basically the truth behind it all. A silent pause followed after as you used your magic to get rid of the smoke that covered your lower body and replaced it with legs, so that you could stand on the ground and have a more humanly conversation with this man.
Before you were done, you looked at the eccentric button up shirt he wore with simple black trousers, and decided to create an outfit based off his casualness. Once your feet touched the ground, you were wearing a pair of ripped jeans and a slightly baggy grey t-shirt that had the words The Rolling Stones with a large mouth that had its tounge sticking out printed across it; something you assumed was popular in this current day and age. Fashion has changed since the last time you were in the outside world, and you weren’t quite sure how you felt about it.
You finally moved your gaze back to the man, having to look up at him and cursing yourself for not making yourself at least a little taller. You then gestured to the the two thick, shiny gold cuffs that resided on each of your wrists before continuing.
“These are the reason I do what I do,” you began. “They don’t come off, I’ve spent my entire existence trying to remove them but I can’t. So yes, because of that, I am stuck doing this forever.”
“What are they?”
“They’re what keeps me linked to the lamp and what gives me my powers.”
“I-,” he stuttered. “That hardly seems fair.”
Again, you shrugged. There wasn’t much you could do but grant this man his three wishes before having to return to your lamp and the sooner he realized that, the better. “Life isn’t fair, you’ll learn that eventually.”
A pregnant pause resumed after that as he brushed his ring clad hand through his brunette curls, and shift his weight from one foot to another. “This is all so crazy. Can’t I just, and don’t take this the wrong way, pass your help off to someone else? Someone who may actually need it?”
“There’s always that option, but I ask that you don’t.” He looked at you oddly and it was then you knew this was going to take some convincing. “My powers falling into the wrong hands could be disastrous. And there’s other options, there’s no time limit for when you have to use your wishes. Why don’t you keep me around? You never know when you may need a little wish.”
And I really don’t want to go back in that lamp yet, you thought to yourself as he pondered your words. “I don’t know.”
“Why don’t you think about it, yeah?”
He looked at you and it was as though you could see the gears turning in his brain as he considered this. After a moment he let out a defeated sigh and looked away. “Ok.”
A wave of excitement washed over you, but was soon cut off when he spoke again.
“For now at least. People are going to question who you are, where you came from and if it gets too suspicious for others... things could get really bad.”
“I’ll blend in, I promise.” You insisted. “Anything you want, I can do it.”
“Can we start with making sure that you’re not blue?” His question comes as a surprise to you, but then when you glance down at your appearance— you nod in understanding.
“Fair enough.” You use your powers to make your skin a neutral colour that would blend in with humans, rather than the blue that would blow your cover instantly. Once you’re done, you look back at the man and smirk. “Now that we’re doing this, do I get to know your name?”
“Uh uhm, it’s Harry. Harry Styles. And you are?”
“Genie.”
“That’s not your name,” he replied firmly, causing you to roll your eyes. Genie is all you’ve ever been called, but no, that isn’t your name. In fact, your actual name is engraved elegantly onto the base of the lamp — so you told it to him. He repeated it, and you felt something immediately flutter in the pit of your stomach. The way your name fell so smoothly from his mouth struck something inside of you and you knew right away that you were in trouble. “That’s a beautiful name.”
“Thank you.” Despite how difficult it was, you tried to hide the blush you felt burning across your cheeks as you awkwardly looked away. You wanted to look at anywhere but him, which he was quick in noticing. No more words were exchanged as you moved around the room to take in more of your new surroundings. He watched as you did this, but you kept your gaze from him; letting your mind wander to the thoughts of how this certain exchange between you and a master might be a bit more than you bargain for.

A Wrinkle In Time (the movie)
Wife and I went to see it tonight. It’s beautifully made, though I might’ve made different editing choices. Possible spoilers below.
The negatives first:
Charles Wallace is played by a young child actor who was not quite as good as the rest of the cast.
Quite a bit of the movie is a little sentimental or corny--but of course, that’s in the source material.
I thought Calvin could’ve played a more active role (he did in the book).
Some of the scenes went on a little too long, presumably because they wanted to show off the excellent (and expensive) special effects. For example, the scene when the kids were flying on the back of Mrs. Whatsit in leaf form was much longer than necessary.
The scene from the trailer in which the Murrys explain tessering to Calvin was deleted; they could’ve kept it and shortened some of the other scenes.
The final climactic “battle” scene went on a bit too long as well, and in particular, I was a bit disturbed by Meg continuing to say how much she loved Charles Wallace even while “he” was hurting her--it felt a bit too much like an implied “keep loving your abuser” and was only justifiable because he was a very young child being possessed by evil so it wasn’t really him doing the abusing. But... it felt problematic in a way I don’t think the corresponding scene in the book did.
But, plenty of positives:
It really is Meg’s story. The “damsels in distress” are her father and her brother, and to a lesser extent, Calvin--but this is a story about Meg learning to love herself, be herself, and process her anger instead of being consuming by it. The male characters are there to help her with that journey.
The rest of the actors (besides the one playing Charles Wallace) were all pretty fantastic. I particularly liked Storm Reid, but also Levi Miller, and of course Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Chris Pine, Mindy Kaling, Reese Witherspoon, and Oprah were all fantastic.
There were some good flashback scenes developing Meg’s relationship with her father.
The costumers clearly had a LOT of fun costuming the Mrs.es!
It was good that they showed the dark inside all the other people--the girls who bully Meg, the teachers. We all have that darkness in us, but the key is to let in the light.
I liked that at the end, Meg didn’t hide from the girl next door.
The choices of earthling luminaries mentioned as warriors fighting the dark were really good: some were women, and they were from various cultures--not just a list of mostly white men (the list in the book includes Marie Curie but no other women, and Gandhi, Buddha, and Jesus but otherwise only European men). I don’t remember the whole list, but aside from Curie and Gandhi, it included Kahlo, Mandela, and Austen.
The scenes on Camazotz were appropriately creepy and horrible.
All of the Mrs.es were great--Mrs. Whatsit was the main comic relief, but Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which both had some excellent and lovely lines.
I think it’s important that Meg’s father’s return was... not just purely joyful. His family was still somewhat hurt and resentful, and he understood that and apologized.
It was beautifully filmed, with really good special effects. I really liked the gossiping flowers!
Obviously, the scene in the book where Meg is being healed in darkness was not included, since movies are a mostly visual medium; we could not experience Meg’s tactile sensations. It was nice to be reminded that some things cannot be adapted to film!
I sort of wonder... the story is a bit trope-y: the whole thing hinges on Meg learning to use her love for her baby brother to defeat the great evil threat. We’re all familiar with that concept from Harry Potter, but ... was A Wrinkle In Time (the book, first published in 1962) the first use of that as the explicit quest for the young protagonist?

JACK OF ALL TRADES MASTER OF NONE
— vulcan, the flame, is played by UTP. the ( 23-26 ) year old hunter identifies with pronouns and has lived in the bunker for amount of time. vulcan is open.
— ( + )     observant, diligent, honorable — ( - )    aggressive, addictive, melancholy
about ;;
— look at the earth in all its splendor, opening like a flower before you and spilling its secrets at your huddled feet. each new discovery begs a thousand new questions and your quest for knowledge reaches new heights, ones you are not yet tall enough to see. you find exquisite pleasure in the mysteries of living things, taking them into your hands and breathing new life into them. and yet, at your own dinner table you feel a stranger, your constant chatter becoming the background noise of a family you don’t fit within. pushing the bridge of your glasses back you take stock in their indifference and find solace in books of biology and chemistry. beakers and test tubes become substitutes for your siblings and soon they are the background noise to your discoveries.
time is an awful construct as it slides past you in what feels like slow motion. all you want to do is leap beyond your bounds, leave behind the melancholy that surrounds your home like a vicious aura threatening to swallow you whole. you crawl toward the light, the decay of the earth you love so well surrounding you, drowning you in its richness and ripeness. freedom doesn’t taste the way you imagined when you carry your weight on your shoulders, that chip a mile wide. you launch yourself into the world beyond your white picket fence and don’t realize you’ve become the same bitter little pill you’ve been gnashing between your teeth for so long.
suddenly the lab you dreamed of becomes a prison, you escape for brief moments but it never fills that empty black hole where the anatomy books say your heart should be. running and running, sweat dripping down your form, but it’s never enough. satisfaction escapes you as you escape the monotony of your own making. knuckles bleed and bruise just the same as trees and you feel that connection but it’s so far away. no amount of sleep ever refuels you and time fades until you don’t know what day it is. the apocalypse has nothing on you, my friend. you are monumental in your self destruction but will you find the strength to rise from the ashes choking your lungs?

Curio ceiling lamp is a perfect solution for those who seek an unique opportunity to express themselves. This uncommon tribute to polish physicist and chemist Marie SkƂodowska-Curie, first woman to win Nobel price, will definitely draw attention of any quest visiting your home or apartment. Curio’s design brings to mind a structure of some unknown element while the equal distribution of nine bulbs  associates with the ordered structure of atoms within crystals. The fun part is that every bulb is held in place only by gravity, each one can be picked up – by the cord of course – and moved or replaced. So, in a way by rearranging “atoms”  you can create your own, new element: awesomeorium. #curie #chemistry #molecule #atom #lighting #industrial #nobel #bulb #loft #industriallighting #copper #kupfer #madeinpoland #polishdesign#handmade #copperlove #zapalgo #curio
