There are a million ways to tell a life story. Review of Reverse the Curse.
"There are a million ways to tell a life story. As a tragedy or a comedy or as a fairy tale with baseball teams that can keep you alive..."
Reverse the Curse is a movie written and directed by and starring David Duchovny based on his novel Bucky F*cking Dent. Duchovny plays Marty, a man dying of lung cancer. Logan Marshall-Green plays his estranged son Ted, an aspiring writer who works as a peanut vendor at Yankee Stadium. Stephanie Beatriz plays Mariana, a grief specialist nurse. Early in the movie, before we ever see Marty, Mariana speaks this line which foreshadows that, while this is a familiar story with universal themes, it is going to be told in a way that will take you by surprise. As the writer adapts his novel to the screen, it retains the signature style of Duchovny's written works for screen, novel, and song lyrics which is more reflective of life than any specific genre of storytelling. In Reverse the Curse Duchovny creates a story of tragedy, comedy, a touch of a fairy tale, an epic sports season, and a dash of romantic comedy. It's a movie that will take you on a heart-filled journey of loss, healing, and new beginnings while you laugh and cry.
With Duchovny's unexpected style (a critic refers to this movie as genre-bending), he is sometimes criticized for tonal dissonance. This film moves quickly, finds creative ways to express backstory without long exposition, and does a better job than his first movie (House of D which I would recommend) of signaling when the fairy tale aspects are about to begin (literally by asking the question do you believe in fairy tales). The story beats of comedy and drama blend into each other in a way that feels connected.
The story of the 78 Red Sox and New York Yankees works well as the backdrop of the story of the father-son. Sports provides a bridge for the two men to learn how to talk to each other again after years of estrangement. Marty makes the point that baseball is the one sport where theoretically a game might never end. However, the genius of this backdrop is that it anchors the story in our world which happens to be a world where people believe in curses and where sometimes there occurs an improbable outcome such as a shortstop with a poor batting average hitting a legendary home run. The fact that this story is a historical fact lends credibility to the more fairy tale parts of the movie.
What really pours forth from this movie is heart. Duchovny delivers comedic lines with genius and there is a confession scene which many are referring to as the best dramatic scene of his career. He has great chemistry with Marshall-Green whose hesitation with some comedic material works well in the character of Ted who is unsure of himself. Beatriz is a standout in her portrayal of a woman whose career path has been determined by personal tragedy. The most "out there" characters in the movie are the three barbershop boys, Marty's older male friends who spend their days in the barbershop. These characters are exactly that...Characters! Played by Jason Beghe, Evan Handler, and Santo Fazio, what makes the scenes with these characters work is the sense that they have known each other and developed their banter over decades. A storyline that could have been seen as silly becomes a story about true friendship over time.
This movie has the feel of a seventies movie. It is not simply that it is set in 1978. In fact, there are some historical inaccuracies such as the showing of Jimmy Carter's malaise speech which takes place in 1979 not 1978. It is the fact that the movie feels like it was based on the type of movies we might have seen in the theater in the seventies. Some of that is cinematic. The cinematographer, Jeff Powers, said in an interview that he drew inspiration from a lot of the American New Waves films from that time including Five Easy Pieces. It reminded me of movies like Harold and Maude, Midnight Cowboy, and Love Story. It's a character-driven story where the ending is a foregone conclusion that takes its beats getting to the ending because the ending is not the point as much as the journey to the ending. Each step of laughter and each step of tears and even sitting through a scene with an over-reliance on fart humor is a beat of hearts within the film.
For me, my journey of watching the film, my heartbeats, were these. Seeing Marty in a hospital bed with oxygen in the first scene in which we see him instantly transported me to the first time I saw my father after his lungs collapsed. However, the seventies feel of the movie transported me to a time when my father and I used to go to the theater to watch movies together - in the seventies- and how much he liked movies like this one. It was a surprise to me to feel that my father's presence was laughing with me as we had laughed together at so many films while he was alive. It was a gift of heart.
All the stars from me!
Please note I had a difficult time not constantly referring to changes between the book and the movie in this review. I was slightly afraid to see the movie for fear it would hurt the novel for me. I am now fascinated by the decisions that were made that make each so unique while telling the same story. In a few weeks, when spoilers are more acceptable, I will do a written comparison of the two.

Hi there! May I please request a song fic with the line "and I do want you to know I hold you up, above everyone" from the song "Good To You" by Marianas Trench, slight angst turning into romance with Sanji and a fem reader? I'm thinking the two were always close and kind of had an unspoken love for each other, but never confessed because he didn't know why he felt so differently about her... until after he returned from Whole Cake Island, realizes his love for her is deeper than any other woman he had ever met,, and decides not to leave anything unsaid to her. She obviously loves him back, and the two pursue their undying love as an official couple, to their crewmates and captains approval. Thank you for your time! Rock on!

Sanji had finally returned after the hellish days of fighting to retrieve him from his family and Big Mom's—and as per usual, a small celebration was held.
“Alright! Now that Sanji is back, let's celebrate!” Luffy announced, holding up a drink in the air as the team cheered, digging in the meal the cook had prepared.
They're all enjoying the accomplishment on the mission, sharing laughters as they chat, while you stayed on the corner, watching them celebrate as you eyed the fourth child of the Vinsmoke's, Sanji.
Same as you, he is silent as ever, just putting a smile up and nodding when talked to—even with Nami and Carrot, and it's quite unusual. You know that he'd fawn over women the instant a they speak, but now, he doesn't, not even speaking a single word to you yet.
He's just standing there, glancing to you from time to time, eyes meeting yours for a few seconds before averting them away.
“..Everyone's around, no words are coming out, and I can't find my breathe, can we just say the rest with no sound?” Sanji says to himself, clenching the cigarette on his hand and letting a heavy sigh out of his lips, swallowing thickly.
Head sharply turning to you, Sanji then moved his body, walking towards you who is spending your time silent in your own world.
“And I know this isn't enough, I still don't measure up...” Standing beside you, the blond then lit his cigarette, looking at you. “...Y/n-chan, hey.”
Calling you, Sanji then wore a weak smile on his face upon catching your attention, huffing out the smoke.
“Yes, Sanji? Is there anything you want to say?” You asked, leaning your body on the wooden wall behind you as you looked at the cook's eyes that softened.
“Sorry, Y/n-chan. Sorry you had to go through the trouble of—” “Hush, Sanji. I don't need any sorry's from you, I came here voluntarily.”
You hummed, hushing Sanji with your finger pressing on his lips. “If you're here just to apologize, I will be ignoring you, Sanji.” You then threatened with a small frown, and pout on your face, causing Sanji to raise his hands in defeat.
“Alright, alright—so Y/n-chan, don't ignore me..!” He says with a chuckle that was quick to die off, heaving a heavy sigh out.
“Anyway, I came here to tell you that I.. I realized something, thanks to the previous events, Y/n-chan...”
Pausing, Sanji then took your hands, lips quivering before he got the words out of his mouth. “I like you, Y/n-chan. I love you. I-I fell for you deeper, and harder compared to the other ladies around me.. That. That is what I realized, And...”
“And I do want you know I hold you up above everyone—and I do want you know I think you'd be good to me, and I'd be so good to you, I would...!” Confessing all this amidst the celebration, you were then struck, shocked. Mouth falling agape, not believing this man. “S..Sanji?”
“Thought I saw a sign, somewhere between the lines, maybe it's me, maybe I only see, what I want..” Slowly letting go of your hands as he sighed, you puffed your chest, holding your breath as you clenched his hands, not letting it slip away from yours.
“But I still have your letter, to stock up between..! The—the feeling's mutual.. Sanji.” You confessed, making it the blond's turn to be shocked.
“It's honestly hard to believe that you're actually confessing to me, Sanji. Knowing that you want to love all the ladies—” “No! I-I've changed.”
“It's only you now, Y/n-chan. It's only you I want to love, to spend my time with, and.. And to marry. Only you, Y/n-chan. You're the only lady I want!” Pulling you in his arms, Sanji embraced you tightly as he spoke. Making you feal his beating heart.
“I'll hold you up above everyone, and I think you'd be good to me, and I'd be so good to you. We suit each other, that's why... I love you..” Having his sparling blue eyes stare you down, you and Sanji got caught up in the moment, sharing a passionate kiss.
“I love you too, Sanji..” You whispered, slinging your arms over the blond's shoulder as his stayed on your hips, letting each other feel your warmth on this cold night.
“Whoohh! Nice, Sanji! You and Y/n are dating now, right!?” The captain exclaims, causing you two to turn your heads to the crew with reddened cheeks.
“W..Well, uhm—” “Oh c'mon, Sanji-kun, Y/n! Just make it official, so more reason for us to celebrate!”
Deciding for you two, Sanji laughs, holding your hand and taking you with the rest to celebrate, having Brook play music for this day, with the promise of love that you two will hold each other up above everyone..

I’m really sorry, I know Barça just made the UWCL final but I just need to ramble about the ending of MSH2 real quick.
When the show first came out, I read some intriguing comments on Twitter re: why the show was categorized as “LGBTQ,” which was enough to make me want to do my best to not be spoiled just to see what ended up happening, but the main message I got was that the ending was heartbreaking.
Then, as the season went on and I started shipping Ana and Mariana more and more (and it became more and more obvious that the subtext wasn’t all in my head), I started thinking about all the possible heartbreaking scenarios because that’s just how I roll, lol. I like to be prepared when something is gonna hurt. So the prediction I ended up with was that something would happen to make Ana be mad at Mariana so, out of spite or anger or whatever, Mariana would end up sleeping/getting back together with Pablo, Ana would somehow find out, cue heartbreak and end credits.
Then, after episode 8 and the kiss, going into the finale, I knew that the wedge that would be drawn between them would be Mariana keeping the secret about Juan Carlos’s affair from Ana, but now I was convinced that, before that happened, Ana and Mariana would have a talk about the kiss, realize there were real feelings there worth exploring, and JUST when they were finally happy about their new relationship potential, Ana would find out about Mariana’s secret for maximum drama. However, I somehow STILL had it in my head that Mariana would end the season getting back together with Pablo, even if just out of heartbreak (because we all know how savage Ana can be when she’s angry). I have never been happier to be wrong!!! Instead, the show effectively lampshaded the “man in the middle of a f/f storyline” trope by taking Pablo completely out of contention and pairing him with Cynthia (even though I’m still... antsy... about the way Mariana finding out about that was framed, like it was some sort of betrayal to her or that she was hurt by it, which would suggest there’s still something between her and Pablo and come on, show! I thought we closed the door on that not 20 minutes earlier!)
So the heartbreak ended up being just a garden-variety “character A feels betrayed by character B and their delicate bond is shattered,” with NO added messiness of “character B then goes and sleeps with their ex or someone else because they are heartbroken” that would complicated their road towards making up/getting together next season by creating an unnecessary love triangle. AND there is the additional layer of heartbreak because Ana doesn’t remember (yet?) that she kissed Mariana and told her she loved her, which is an interesting card for the show to still have in hand to play next season.
This way, Mariana hurt Ana by admitting she lied by omission about Juan Carlos, and Ana hurt Mariana deliberately AND inadvertently by kicking her out of the house AND ALSO by reacting badly to Mariana’s love confession, making it clear that she didn’t remember anything about the kiss or her own love confession, which... yeah, I can work with that. This is a much less excruciating cliffhanger, because it doesn’t hinge on stupid misunderstandings that would be resolved if the characters involved just fucking TALKED to each other but, rather, on the actions (or inactions, as the case may be) of the characters themselves (as well as not being unnecesarily cruel by letting us see what it would be like for them both to be on the same page romantically and then snatching it away).
Tumblr media
All in all, I’m SO pleasantly surprised that I am now TERRIFIED about my possible impending death to restore the balance of the Universe after something this amazing happening to me, LMAO. Stay tuned!

1823 Aug., Wed. 20
8
11 1/2
Soon began on the erotics last night. Her warm, then [e]ncouraging. I said this was not like keeping our promise. She answered, ‘no’ and reached a towel to put under us to keep the bed clean on account of her cousin. I had retired too early for her. ‘Am I too soon for you?’ ‘Yes, rather,’ said she, and I resumed, determined she should have a sufficiently good kiss before I had had one. She said she had and we fell asleep.
Both awoke at five in the morning and talked till seven. Asked if this was not better than my sleeping in Micklegate. ‘Yes,’ but it was prudence # on her part. She had a feeling she could not describe. Would make any sacrifice rather than have our connection suspected. She seemed very affectionate and fond of me. Said I was her only comfort, she should be miserable without me.
Lou has got rather out of ∂ [Charles]’s good books she – Lou never got up to breakfast living with her uncle has given her very independent notions – He waited for her – Consulted her in everything – She told C– [Charles] one morning, she got up at the hour that suited her convenience – ∂ [Charles Lawton] has therefore been sadly out of his best humour this summer and π [Mariana] sadly fidgetted –
Told M– [Mariana] that she did not understand one 1/2 my letters, and misunderstood the other – That my aunt said (speaking of the regard between us), it was “much more on one side than the other”, – On my side then hers – Miss Pattison had blushed up to the sears, and told her at Manchester that ∂ [Charles Lawton] complained of her being cold and she wished she would try to be warmer when she returned. π [Mariana] said she and ∂ [Charles Lawton] very well knew the reason of that that she could not seem warm if she did not feel so.
π [Mariana] once sat next Miss Pattison’s uncle at dinner there and he said of her she looked like one who could love. I agreed, then reverting to ourselves, ‘this is adultery to all intents and purposes.’ ‘No, no,’ said she. ‘Oh yes, π [Mariana]. No casuistry can disguise it.’ ‘Not this then, but the other.’ ‘Well,’ said I, choosing to let the thing turn her own way. ‘I always considered your marriage legal prostitution. We were both wrong. You to do and I to consent to it. And when I think of blaming others, I always remember nothing can at all excuse us but our prior connection.’
I did not pursue the subject, nor did π [Mariana] seem to think much of it. The fear of discovery is strong. It rather increases I think. But her conscience seems seared, so long as concealment is secure. She said yesterday of Harriet, if she had never liked Milne I could have made more excuse for her. Thought I to myself, if none but those who were without sin threw the first stone.
Harriet, like the woman taken in adultery, might escape – Told her she needed not fear my conduct letting out our secret. I could deceive anyone. Then told her how completely I had duped Miss Pickford # and that the success of such deep deceit almost smote me, but I had done it all for her, π [Mariana]’s, sake. ‘Why should it smite you? ‘It is deceit that does no one any harm.’
I made no reply, but mused how sophistry might reign within the breast where none suspected it. How might not this argument best retched from one deceit to another. Mary, you have passion like the rest, but your caution cheats the world out of it. Scandal and your courage is weak, rather than your principal strong. Yet is it I who write this.
She’s true to me, yes, but she has not that magnanimity of truth that satisfies a haughty spirit like mine. She is too tamely, worldly, and worldliness is her strength and weakness her foible and her virtue. She loves me, I do believe her, as well as she is capable of loving. Yet her marriage was worldly, her whole conduct is worldly to the farthest verge that craven love can bear.
How often has it struck me that years ago when once talking to Lou about this marriage and the powerful circumstances that almost compelled it. ‘Well,’ said she, ‘you do not know π [Mariana]. She is worldly and the match was worldly altogether.’ This did indeed strike me at the time but it never struck me as it does at this moment – (Thursday 21 August 3 55/60 p.m. 1823) –
It now opens upon me as the key of all that all I have never yet been able to comprehend in her character. I have doubted her love, I have doubted her sincerity. How often with an almost bursting heart have I laid aside my papers and my musings because I dared not pursue inconsistencies I could not unravel. I could not deem the dial true, I would not deem it false. The time the manner of her marriage to sink January 1815 in oblivion. Oh how it broke the magic of my faith forever. How, spite of love, it burst the spell that bound my very reason suppliant at her feet. I loathed consent but loathed the easing more. I would have given the yes she sought, tho it had rent my heart into a hundred thousand shivers. It was enough to ask –
It was a coward love that dared not brave the storm; and, in desperate despair, my proud, indignant spirit watched it sculk away – How few the higher feelings we then could have in common! The chivalry of heart was gone – Hope’s brightest hues were brushed away – Yet still one melancholy point of union remained – She was unhappy. So was I –
Love scorned to leave the ruin desolate; and time she has shaded it so sweetly, my heart still lingers in its old abiding place, thoughtless of its broken bowers, save when some sudden guest blows thro’, and scrunching memory is disturbed – But oh! no more “the heart knoweth its own bitterness,” and it is enough – “Je sens mon coeur, et je connais les hommes. Je ne suis fait comme aucun de ceux que j’ai vus; j’ose croire n'être fait comme aucun de ceux qui existent.” Rousseau's Confessions volume and page first.
She loves me. Tho it is neither exactly as I wished, nor as I too fondly persuaded myself. ‘Ere years had taught me to weigh human nature in the balance or unlock the loveliest of bosoms with the key of worldliness. Yes, she loves me. My own feelings shall descend to hers. They have done so in part. How I could have adored her had she been more of that angelic being my fancy formed her. No thought, no word, no look, had wandered then. Surely my every sentiment towards her had had less of earth in it than heaven –
How like “the visions of romantic youth”! I know she might have realized then – Je sens mon coeur – But no more – No more – I seem unable to return to the dry detail of a journal –
At seven an hour before getting up asked her to get out of bed and wash. We both did so. Then got into bed again and had a long quiet good kiss and then a comfortable nap. Got up at eight. I laughed and said we must really both of us get well as soon as we could. We owned she thought I was worse than she was, and said jokingly ‘do you forgive me for it?’ ‘Of course.’ I set her at ease on this point, but yet the characteristic difference between us always strikes me. I am sure I should even shew twice as much as she really feels –
Went downstairs at 8 1/2 – Breakfasted etc. etc. Sat next Mrs Milne. Had been very properly attentive to her. Asked π [Mariana] if she was satisfied etc. etc. Said I would act as she liked but I could not decidedly change my manners to Mrs. M[ilne] unless my real acquaintance with her conduct might be acknowledged. She has been foolish again in corresponding with her cousin, Mr. Dannett. This was the thing Eli [Eliza Belcombe] alluded to when I was last in York –
Took leave, and off from the B– [Belcombe]’s (Dr. B– [Belcombe] had had rather a restless night but was nevertheless no worse). As the minster clock struck 10 found the horses to the mail at the Tavern door, to start at 10 1/4 instead of 10 3/f as I supposed – Asked the coachman to wait a minute or 2, and hurried into Micklegate – Only just time to wish then good by, and say I should be passing thro’ again in a fortnight or 3 weeks to spend a fortnight with M– [Mariana] at Scarbro’ –
Did not see Mrs. Duffin this morning – Miss M– [Marsh] whispered last night, she had had a paralytic affectation about a fortnight ago, and had been almost gone – I perceived no difference in her as I saw her sitting round the table last night – She did not attempt to move, but this being unnecessary, did not strike me –
Got into the new mail, and drove off from the D– [Duffin]’s door at 10 1/2 – Only 1 gentleman besides myself – Beyond Tadcaster took up a nice decent elderly woman – I never uttered all the way – Wrapt in musing – Thought of π [Mariana] and the three steps business, then about my manners and appearance. Building castles about their improvement, elegance, engagingness, etc. etc. The good society I hope to get into, etc., etc.
Thought of consulting Mr. Simmons, the surgeon. George Streetman, Chester. π [Mariana] consulted him. He feared some uterary of or belonging to the womb. Determine yet might judge from the effect of Scarbro whether Steph was right in supposing it merely weakness. He had treated her judiciously. She ought to be examined, but would not submit –
At Leeds at 1 – Got out for 1/4 hour and off again (from the Rose & Crown) at 1 20/60 – Beautiful day till we got to the New Dolphin Clayton heights, and from there to the Pine-apple

There's people debating if Destiel is really canon and talking about how cringey that scene was. And they're confused Destiel fans are losing their shit.
But listen. Listen.
The bar for this show has gotten so low, it's f-ing underground. The bar is at Mariana Trench level.
For any other show, I would say "nah, it's vague". But this show, with its years of bs and queerbating?! This is way beyond what we could ever hope we would get from SPN. An actual kiss with two leading men? Gimmie a break. If you think you're getting that on Supernatural you're delusional.
Also, we can't talk about the love confession scene without including the very end of the episode where Dean is crying, unable to answer Sam's calls. Dean has been emotionally constipated and dealing with self hate for the entire 15 years of this show. His disbelief is exactly what you expect from a character like him.

Hey there!! So there are some photos going around of Ana and Mariana wearing matching necklaces, Ana’s wearing a kinda heart shaped key and Mariana a lock. Do you think they got them together or something? I feel like it’s too good to be true lmao. I’m thinking that they probably wanna get a third season as well and therefore maybe slow down whatever Ana and Mariana have going on… like how far do you think they’ll develop their relationship in s2? Or in general, what do you think will happen? I have such bad experiences from other shows s2s so I refuse to hype myself up but I can’t help it 🥲
Bro... BRO. BRO!!!!! ARE YOU FOR REAL RN??? OMG no what kind of fanfic come to life that is so cuuuuuute. I know, it does sound too good to be true but hey, if there’s actual photographic evidence, then who am I to question it, lol. Without further context, that actually seems to me like the kind of thing one gives as a gift, which, if it pans out, is even more adorable (and OMG that means my fantasy of them celebrating Mother’s Day together and exchanging gifts like they’re anniversary gifts is ALIVE!!!)
As for where I thought they’d develop them in season 2, thinking as a writer myself and how I would pace the storyline, I always figured they’d do the typical telenovela thing where they don’t actually get together for real until the last couple of episodes, except to stall them getting together I would just have them go back to being friends and in each other’s lives like in season 1 but with the added UST angle between them (taking into account also the fact that Ana has yet to remember her drunk/high love confession and that they’re probably gonna capitalize on it and have that realization not happen immediately).
I would actually be perfectly fine if they ended it in season 2, because another season just means a higher potential to ruin things by creating unnecessary obstacles for them to get together or dumb conflicts if they actually let them be together. One of my favourite TV shows with a f/f storyline is El Embarcadero (if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it!), which only had 2 seasons but to me it was the perfect length to tell a well-rounded romance between the two main characters. When it ended, it didn’t feel like I would miss out on so many things or that it hadn’t been enough, because it was done in a very satisfying way, which I think would have been negated if it’d had a third season. But that’s just my personal preference, obviously, and I wouldn’t say no to a third season, as long as they don’t do the typical Netflix ending with a cliffhanger or with things between them unresolved and then leave us hanging if the show doesn’t get renewed.
Bottom line, though, thank you SO MUCH for bringing this news to my attention, you have literally made my whole week!!!
