Day 5: Bookshops and Theater

We started Day 5 of the Book-Lover’s Tour with a visit to Maggs Bros bookshop in the Mayfair area of London, where we were greeted by the incomparable Fuchsia Voremberg. Fuchsia specializes in travel and exploration, and she had pulled some natural history treasures for us to see, including a third edition of Catesby’s Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands, originally published in 1731. It was incredible to turn the pages of this magnificent treasure. From Maggs, we trekked to Shapero Rare Books, where we were escorted to an upstairs room that was filled to the brim with natural history rare books, including all 44 volumes of John Gould’s works. It was a breathlessly exciting experience.

In the afternoon, the group went to the Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace to see the temporary exhibit of Maria Merian’s Butterflies. Merian was a German artist who was fascinated with entomology and metamorphosis. She traveled to Suriname in 1699 to study animals and plants with a particular focus on the life cycle of insects. The exhibition displays 50 of her works, including vibrant paintings done on vellum. Also on display was a copy of her ground-breaking book, Metamorphosis. If you want to learn more about this bold and talented woman, I highly recommend reading Kim Todd’s book, Chrysalis (2007).

Our final night in London was spent enjoying the theater. Some of our group members attended the Royal Opera, while 8 of us went to the Globe Theatre to see Imogen, which was an edgy urban retelling of Shakespeare’s Cymbeline. Experiencing the Globe firsthand was amazing. We had a delicious dinner first at the Swan Restaurant in the Globe. The open air theater is absolutely authentic to the one during Shakespeare’s day. We were seated in the stalls, rather than standing as “groundlings.” Imogen was riveting - set in a gang and drug culture, it featured amazing choreography and stage sets, hip hop and rap music, with every word Shakespeare’s. Truly a spectacular experience!
