Unshaming my indigenous heritage | Mari Boine

Mari Boine grew up in a Sámi family in the North of Norway, where she was taught to be ashamed of her heritage and the close relation to nature. Growing up she found the opposite to be true, and turned the realisation into a life long musical career. Mari is a singer, musician and songwriter from Sápmi, Norway. Her music is infused with Sami roots (joik) in combination with jazz, rock and electronic sounds. Mari Boine has been one of the most outspoken and important representatives of the Sámi culture. As an artist and activist, she has worked tirelessly for the recognition and preservation of the indigenous Sámi culture and for the protection of Mother Earth among other causes. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.

Joik is a type of traditional sámi singing that’s meant to evoke/express a person, animal or place through rhythm, sounds and energy. You don’t joik about someone, you joik them. Joik is mostly sounds, and often have no lyrics or short lyrics. “Máze” has lyrics calling Máze beautiful and saying “Under water they would put Máze church, Máze school”, which is referring to the Alta conflict in the 1970s and 80s.

Máze is a small village on the norwegian side of the borders in Sápmi. Around 98% of the population is sámi. In the late 1960s, the Norwegian government announced plans to build a hydroelectric power plant and dam in the Alta river, which would have huge consequences for sámi reindeer herding and fishing in the area, preventing sámi people from continuing to practice their traditional way of life. The earlier plans for the dam would have put Máze under water, displacing all the people living there and destroying a village that has existed for hundreds of years. After resistance from sámi activists, the plans were altered in 1973 so that Máze would survive.

Sámi people fought against the construction of the power plant for years, with protests, peaceful civil disobedience (like chaining themselves and creating blockades around the site), and a hunger strike where they slept in lávvus in front of the norwegian parliament in 1979, and a second hunger strike in 1981. 10% of the norwegian police force was sent to the construction area and there was talk of sending the military to assist the police, but this was stopped by the minister of defense at the time. several hundreds of people were removed by force from protests and arrested.

The Alta hydroelectric power plant was finished in 1987 and is still in operation. This is one of the most famous examples of Norway’s green colonialism in Sápmi, but it’s also one of the biggest examples of Sámi spirit and resistance. Máze continues to exist, more than 50 years later. Sámi people are still here and we’re still fighting for our right to continue our traditional lifestyles and culture, for example with the large civil disobedience actions in 2023 over the Fosen case.

The Nutcracker in the Duckverse - Gyro Gearloose as Nutcracker and Drosselmeyer's nephew and Dickie Duck as Marie - Drawcember - Books, Music and Stories - Merry Christmas and Happy New Year - Cosplay, Ballet and Literature - Donald Duck Comics - Duckverse - My Style - A Gift for My Friends

This time I drew something related to cosplay from famous musical and literary works, and since the Christmas and New Year holidays are underway, I drew something related to one of my favorite Christmas works, which is the fairy tale about The Nutcracker. The Nutcracker is a fairy tale written by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann in 1816 under the name "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King", and then the famous writer Alexandre Dumas wrote this into his story by publishing The Nutcracker in 1844. Many years later, in 1892, one of the best composers of all time, the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, composed it for a ballet called "The Nutcracker", which is why the Nutcracker is known to be the most famous and is mostly associated with Christmas stories.

It is about a German family Stahlbaum who celebrated Christmas Eve and Christmas and on that occasion their old friend Herr Drosselmeyer came and gave one of the Stahlbaum children, especially daughter Marie (in some versions Louise or Clara) a soldier who crunches nuts and nuts. That is why he was nicknamed The Nutcracker. Her brother Fritz broke the toy, which made Marie cry. Marie fell in love with him and one day an army of mice attacked their house, but the toy soldiers led by the Nutcracker managed to defend themselves. The Nutcracker defeated the king of mice who had seven heads. Then he took Marie to his kingdom of sweets and fairy tales and turned into a real prince. It was all just a dream, until on Christmas, Drosselmeyer's nephew came who looked a lot like a prince, which made Marie fall in love even more and they became friends and fell in love.

So I decided to draw this, only it stars the famous ducks from the Donald Duck comics. I wanted to draw Donald as the Nutcracker and Daisy as Marie, but for some reason I drew a different one with Gyro Gearloose as the Nutcracker and the nephew of Drosselmeyer and Dickie Duck as Marie. Gyro is a famous inventor from Duckburg, but it's very interesting that he's one of the toys and that Dickie saved him in the end and that they got married in the end. I love the two of them as a couple, so that's why I drew them in those roles. Donald's nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie Duck play the role of Marie's brother Fritz, and Donald and Daisy Duck play Marie's parents. Scrooge McDuck plays Herr Drosselmeyer since he likes to travel a lot, although he does it for his business. Fethry Duck is disguised as a rabbit because in that ballet the rabbit has a really good role, and at the end he added an owl who also has a role in that story. The main villain is the seven-headed mouse king played by Emil Eagle, one of the great villains from the Donald Duck comics and Gyro's greatest opponent. Yes, I drew the two of them sword fighting and fighting over Nutcracker's land. In the end, the Nutcracker won. I drew in my own style, using styles from Italian and European comics and I drew them wearing clothes from the 1820s, or rather from the 19th century, as they were worn then, since the story takes place then. Yes, there is a Mickey Mouse short from Mickey Mouse Works related to that topic, although I'm not a fan of Donald Duck playing the mouse king, and not Mortimer or Phantom Blot. So I drew my version more as I like it.

The thing is, I think I get a crush quite easily. So there might be a couple.. Something more intense and something not that serious. But things that are common for them are similar music taste with me, nature and animals are important to them, they overall are a kind soul, see the beauty in things, are a bit nerdy, deep and mysterious.. Lookwise I usually get a crush on men with longer hair and maybe some facial hair, and who are taller. What can I do, my "type" might be that typical metalhead guy..

　 いよいよ12月。 山の方では雪の知らせもあり、 さすがに寒くなってきました。 それじゃあずっと家にいていいよ、なんて ことならいいんですが、そういうわけにもいかず… 特にここ北陸では 冬ともなれば コートやジャケットは必需品なのです。 　 とはいうものの、アウター選びというのも これがなかなかどうして、 かばんや靴同様に この一着があればOK!ということには ならないもの。 他の衣類よりちょっとばかり値がはることもあって ほいほい何着も買えないな、とも感じたり。 デザインや色だけでなく、 実用性も考えて…と 選ぶのに慎重になってしまいます。 　 セーターなど厚手の服の さらに上に着るものなので、 わたしとしては 腕や脇が窮屈でないものがいいな、と思ったり 厚手の生地だと暖かいけれど 重たいので肩が凝るな、とか 雪を払いやすいのがいいな、とか 冬にしか着ないのだから メンテナンスが楽なものがいいな、とか… 　 ちょっと考えただけでも さまざまな条件が出てきます。 加えて、TPOを考えたり 価格が納得いくものか、となってくると 悩ましくもなるわけです。 　 そんないろんな条件を ある程度クリアしてくれそうなところ�� この冬は キルティングジャケットや アウトドア系のジャケットに 目が行っています。 　 寒い季節、外でも 快適に過ごせるように…

　 初めて口にしたのは、 確か友人のおすそ分けだったかと 思います。 「これ、めっちゃおいしいから！」と いただいたのは、 白い包み紙に銀色の牛の絵が描かれた キャラメルのような… しかし！頬張った瞬間、 ホロッとほどけて 「これ、キャラメル…じゃない！？」と とにかく驚いたのが、 このポーランドのお菓子、クルフカだったのです。 　 その後ずっと出会えずにいたのですが つい2年ほど前、偶然それらしきものを発見。 購入してみたらば、メーカーこそ違えど これだ！となり、 以来わたしのおやつの定番のひとつになっています。 　 いくつかのメーカーから 発売されているようですが、 どのパッケージにも 牛が描かれているのは 単にミルク味だとか ミルクをつかったお菓子だから、という ことだけではなく、 クルフカというその名前が そもそもポーランドのことばで 「ちいちゃい牛ちゃん」という意味だから、 ということのよう。 日本語的な表現なら、 モーモーちゃん、といったところでしょうか。 　 しっかり甘く、されど キャラメルとは違い、 ほろりと口の中で ほどけて消えるため、 ついついもうひとつ、と 止まらなくなってしまうお菓子。 その食感におどろく顔が見たくて、 いろんなひとに 食べてみて！とおすそわけしている わたしなのでした…。
