MARGARET THATCHER
MARGARET THATCHER
1925-2013
British Prime Minister from 1979-1990
Margaret Thatcher was born in the Lincolnshire market town, Grantham, her parents owned and operated a grocery store. Thatcher went on to study chemistry and law, but she was most passionate about politics. She went on to work as a barrister, entered Parliament in 1959 as a Conservative, and became the leader in 1975. She married Denis Thatcher, a successful businessman in 1951.
In 1979, Thatcher became the first female British Prime Minister. At the time England was facing an economic recession and she used her concerns to win the public over. She took a strong anti-Soviet stance, gaining the nickname ‘the Iron Lady’. As prime minister, Thatcher met with Queen Elizabeth II to discuss government business (Thatcher was six months older than the queen). She used her power to dismantle socialism and reduce government spending.
In 1984, she was nearly killed by the IRA, after a bomb narrowly missed her at a conference in Brighton. Five people were killed, including the wife of Minister John Wakeham.
In 1987, she started to become unpopular with her policies including the poll tax. In 1990 she failed to gain a majority and resigned as prime minister and was succeeded by John Major. In 1992 she took a seat in the House of Lords. In retirement, she continued exerting political influence.
Thatcher’s daughter Carol revealed that her mother had dementia in 2005 and that her mother couldn’t read anymore due to memory loss. In 2013, aged 87, she died after suffering a stroke. She had been staying at a suite at the Ritz Hotel, London after having problems using the stairs at her home. She received a ceremonial funeral, with a church service at St Paul’s Cathedral. Queen Elizabeth II attended her funeral. Her body was cremated and her ashes were interred on the Royal Hospital Chelsea’s grounds, next to her husband’s.

THATCHER AND THE EU from Jon Danzig on Vimeo.
→ Margaret Thatcher gave a clear answer
WHY THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY WAS CREATED
The European Community, now called the European Union, was started for one reason alone: to create lasting peace and security between its members following the most devastating war the world had ever known.
Don’t take my word for it. This is what UK Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, said to the European Parliament on 9 December 1986:
“70 years ago, Europe had just experienced, on the battlefields of Verdun and the Somme, the bloodiest fighting, the most tragic waste of a generation, that the world has ever known.
“The Second World War was to bring further heartbreak and destruction.
“Our Community was conceived and constructed to ensure that this experience would never be repeated, to bring about a lasting peace within Western Europe, to replace antagonism with friendship and cooperation, to deepen and broaden Europe’s democratic tradition.”
Mrs Thatcher added:
“And let us never forget that the aftermath of war produced two great ideas which have shaped our destiny ever since.
“One was the NATO Alliance, the other the European Community.”
Throughout her premiership, and previously as an MP and then leader of the Opposition, Mrs Thatcher was a strong supporter of the European Community project.
In particular, she helped to design and promote the EU’s crown jewel: its Single Market, that has transformed and enriched the continent of Europe.
Today, almost every European country is in the EU’s Single Market or wants to be (except Britain and Belarus).
Recent polling by YouGov indicates the British public would vote by a sizable margin to rejoin the European Union if a new referendum was held.
