THE WESTSIDE CENTER FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING (WCIL)

This iconic painting of two blue whales at the corner of Venice Blvd. and Beethoven St. in Culver City, California, has been part of the urban landscape of Los Angeles since 1978 by Garcia and Geraldi. Originally painted with assistance from David Gatchel, Samuel Myring, and Marica Alvarez, in 1992 restoration of the work was made possible by the Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles. WCIL was created in 1976 when a small group of friends with disabilities saw the need for an independent living center and pursued that goal relentlessly. Today WCIL says “consumers of all ages, people using chairs, canes, walkers, who are blind, deaf, and have any disability you name come every weekday to WCIL for services and programs designed for people with disabilities.” @margaretgarciaart @themcla
