Lost at Sea
Tumblr media
aka the tragedy of whatever became of Elizabeth Swann’s mother in PotC canon.
Author’s note:  In my PotC writings, I have a little headcanon where Joshamee Gibbs’ canon (mentioned) sister Margaret (who marries a lawyer) is my Margaret Gibbs-Swann who married Weatherby (who was also a lawyer before becoming Governor). I also headcanon that their father is Captain Charles Gibbs, a decorated Royal Navy Captain (with a secret history of piracy that wasn’t discovered until posthumously but that’s another story), and that the Gibbs family are from Bristol. This story takes place approximately a year before the CotBP prologue & the crossing from England.
tw death.
“It is my sad duty to report that Captain Charles Gibbs has gone to his great reward. Heart attack. At least he did not suffer.”
The decorated Captain Charles Gibbs has passed away.
The Swann family - the newly appointed Governor Weatherby, his wife Margaret, and their young daughter Elizabeth had traveled form London to Margaret’s hometown Bristol for the funeral and its aftermath. Fortunately for Weatherby being a lawyer, there were some additional legal matters to be addressed with the late Captain Gibbs’ will (notably reverting Charles disowning his son Joshamee — Margaret’s brother — on the grounds of Joshamee’s suspected affiliation with pirates and rumrunning), which were soon after settled smoothly.
When Weatherby received word of his need to return to London, Margaret asked her husband to bring Elizabeth with him and return without her, as she needed more time to grieve her father’s passing.
What Margaret was really hoping was that she would run into her brother again.
Her patience was rewarded. One of the Royal Navy ships made port and Margaret was able to get a final reunion with her brother Joshamee. He couldn’t stay for long as his ship was going to leave port in only a few days, but he was more than obliging to catch up on lost time with his sister, and grateful she was able to restore him to the Gibbs family inheritance.
Among said inheritance was Captain Charles Gibbs’ 3 ships. HMS Ol’ Navigator, a schooner. La Perla (The Pearl), a sloop. And The Tempest, a dinghy ((much like the one Captain Jack Sparrow sails in his intro scene in CotBP)).
With her brother’s aid, Margaret sold the schooner, giving Joshamee the additional funds. She keeps the sloop for herself and her family’s use once they are settled in Port Royal. Finally when a fisherman sailor asked if he could purchase the dinghy, at the last minute Margaret decides to keep it for one more day because in a spur of the moment ‘call of the sea’ she decides to go sailing aboard the Tempest with her brother for one last adventure - for old times sake.
It was the dinghy their late father would take them on when they were children and Margaret as a Captain’s daughter first learned to sail on. It was a carefree day of high spirits on the high seas, and where Joshamee and Margaret could finally fulfill a childhood sibling promise.
The next day the Royal Navy ship departs Bristol Harbour, and Joshamee bids farewell to his sister.
It was the last time they would ever see each other.
Margaret writes to her husband and daughter of her expected return to London on the morrow, of her eagerness to be reunited with them again, of her brief reunion with her brother, and of her father’s sloop La Perla to be sailed to Port Royal by their dear friend Captain Hawkins so they can go sailing together once they’ve settled in their new home in the Caribbean.
Debating what to do with the dinghy the Tempest, and probably deciding it would be best to sell it after all to the sailor, Margaret decides to take it out for one last sail. The sailor she’s going to sell it to offers to accompany her, but she politely declines. The Tempest sets sail in good weather and fair winds with its lone captain from Bristol Harbour and the sailor watched it vanish on the horizon.
...
Lady Margaret Gibbs-Swann never returned to London on the morrow nor did she ever return to the docks to sell the dinghy to the sailor.
The sailor said that night in Bristol there was a storm that appeared on the far horizon in the late afternoon and came on a downpour overnight. He asked all the dock workers and harbormaster whether Captain Gibbs’ dinghy the Tempest & Lady Swann ever returned to port, but it did not and neither did she.
No one knew whatever became of her, and while Weatherby did everything he could in his power to search for his wife lost at sea, the Bristol locals could only quietly mourn, knowing “The unforgiving seas must have stolen another one.”

"Word has it that you were recently in Tortuga, Mister Mercer..." Why was she visiting him again? To deliver some macaroons and discuss the means for her daughter to escape the Company, yes. But as Margaret distractedly stared into her teacup, grateful finding an unlikely ally in Ian, one question remained that’s plagued her mind for quite some time now "For no reason in particular... in Tortuga, did you happen to encounter anyone bearing the name Gibbs?"
Mercer was quiet, lightly chewing on one of the delicate treats she had made him… Everything she made was so delicate, so sweet.. just like her. Or the facade she held up, that is. The Clerk knew that she held a deeper strength within her…
His eyes wandered back up at her, continuing to chew.. a small smile on his face. He wasn’t going to speak with food in his mouth, that would be rude to Lady Swann and her presence. With a swallow of his treat he nodded.
“Ah, yes. I did..”
He lightly dabbed some crumbs away from his mouth.
“He seems to be the first mate of a pirate that I am sure you are very familiar with… Captain Jack Sparrow…”
His dark chocolate eyes fluttered up to her, he was silent once again.. lightly tilting his head… his voice now in a deafening whisper.
Tumblr media
“Your daughter has boarded that ship, safely I promise…. But a familiar face joined her…”
The little putter patter of his fingers rolled on the desk..
“The disgraced commodore, he was drunk as a hog… covered in filth…”

(for Clancy) The Caribbean is a place full of rum-soaked pirates such as Hector Barbossa, Jack Sparrow, and Joshamee Gibbs
More neutral parties include Margaret Jones/Swann/Gibbs and Davy Jones
Naval peoples include James Norrington, Theodore Groves, and Armando Salazar
{ 🍄 }
“ . . . Huh. “
Give him a minute to process all these foreign names.
“ Okay, so, hold on. Pirates live here ? I dunno if I wanna partake in an orgy with pirates, I should’ve selected an avatar of like . . a kraken or something, people seem to really like tentacles nowadays . . . eugh. “
Shudders. All those suction cups and such. Not his thing.
“ Jack Sparrow ? Is he like a bird or something ? A bird man ? Jack of all trades ? Barbossa sounds like someone I probably won’t like just because of the name, it sounds gross. Barbossa. I didn’t even know Joshamee was a name.
Oh, wait, wait, I’ve heard of Davy Jones before ! Isn’t he that guy that runs the locker at the bottom of the ocean ? He’s the guy with all the tentacles, yeah, he’s GOT to be the one who instigates all the orgies ! I bet that guy’s GREAT with the ladies, ladies LOVE tentacles. Absolutely love ‘em. Not my cup of tea, but whatever floats your goat, y’know ?
Salazar sounds like a Pokémon. You know what a Pokémon is, right ? Does Pokémon exist yet ooor — ? “

1. Hector Barbossa
Other Characters You Like: Davy Jones, Tia Dalma/Calypso, Joshamee Gibbs, Carina Smyth, Henry Turner, and Shansa
Least Favorite Character: Phillip
OTPs: Will/Elizabeth, Davy Jones/Calypso, Hector Barbossa/Margaret Smyth, Jack/Angelica (Despite my mixed feelings about Angelica, I still ship them)
NOTPs: Phillip/Syrena, Henry/Carina (I love their interactions, but I just don't ship them romantically)
Favorite Friendship: Jack Sparrow/Hector Barbossa
Favorite Family: The Turner family
Favorite Episode: I'm skipping this one because it's not a TV series.
Favorite season/book/movie: My favorite Pirates of the Caribbean movies are Curse of the Black Pearl and At World's End
Favorite Quote: "You best start believing in ghost stories, Miss Turner. You're in one!"
Moment that made you fangirl the hardest: The ending scene in Dead Man's Chest when it is revealed that Barbossa is back from the dead. (No joke, I saw this movie in the theater when I was 5 and I freaked out when I saw him. This was before Barbossa became my favorite.)
When It Really Disappointed You: I was disappointed with On Stranger Tides for a few reasons. (One reason: the scene with the wild boar was unnecessary)
Saddest moment: Barbossa's sacrifice in Dead Men Tell No Tales
Most Well Done Character Death: Barbossa's death in Curse of the Black Pearl and Beckett's death in At World's End
Favorite Guest Star:( I'm gonna name one star who has only appeared in the sequels for this one.) Bill Nighy.
Favorite Cast Member: Geoffrey Rush
Character You Wish Was Still Alive: Hector Barbossa (He deserved a happy ending where he is sailing with his daughter on the Queen Anne's Revenge as they're following the stars)
One Thing You Hope Happens: A spin off movie or Disney+ series about Barbossa. (I think Geoffrey Rush deserves to play as Hector Barbossa one more time)
Most Shocking Twist: Barbossa is Carina's father
When did you start watching/reading: When I was real little
Trope you wish they would stop using: Plot holes
One thing this show/book/film does better than others: I wouldn't say it's better than other movies...
Funniest Moment: "Why is the rum gone?!" from Curse of the Black Pearl, "I've got a jar of dirt!" from Dead Man's Chest, the pistol scene in At World's End, Jack and Barbossa at Ponce De Leon's ship in On Stranger Tides, and Carina trying to explain to Jack and the pirates what a horologist is in Dead Men Tell No Tales.
Couple you would like to see: I would like to see a flashback scene with Barbossa and Margaret so we could see what their relationship was like.
Actor/Actress you want to join the cast: I honestly don't know.
Most Boring Plotline: The sidestory with Phillip and Syrena
Best Flashback: The opening scene with Henry and Will Turner in Dead Men Tell No Tales
Most Layered Character: both Jack and Barbossa
Scariest Moment: One word: Kraken
Grossest Moment: When the Kraken roars and spits some pretty gross stuff at Jack
Best Looking Male:
Tumblr media
Best Looking Female:
Tumblr media
Who You're Crushing On: I wouldn't say I have a crush on him, I just really love everything about Barbossa in this franchise.
Tumblr media
Most Beautiful Scene:
Tumblr media
Unanswered question/continuity issue/plot error that bugs you: It really bothers me that the writers of Dead Men Tell No Tales forgot that Jack got the compass from Tia Dalma...
At what point did you fall in love with this show/book: I started liking it more around the time Dead Men Tell No Tales was released in theaters.

“Good night, Papa.”
“Good night, Elizabeth.”
“Good night, Mama.”
“Good night, my little cygnet”
“I love you.”
“We love you too, with all our heart~”
With loving kisses and sweet dreams wishes, Weatherby and Margaret Swann tucked in their only child to bed, before retiring for the evening to their own rooms. And their little daughter closed her eyes to sleep... or at least, pretended to. Long enough until she waited for the above deck commotion to wind down.
It was a long journey ahead of them from England. They’d already been sailing for a month, and had another two to go before seeing the shores of their new home in Port Royal. The young girl didn’t know how she felt about this change, but she did know she found life at sea exciting.
Finally, when she coast was clear, she could go on her own adventure. Over her nightgown she bundled herself in her robe and coat and tiptoed out of the guest cabin. Past her the doors of officers and her parent’s guest rooms and hammocks of slumbering sailors, up to the main deck.
It was so quiet compared to the bustle of earlier in the day, Lizzie felt like she had the entire giant ship all to herself. Undoing her brain she let her hair fly in the sea breeze, and took a deep breath of the refreshing salt air. But she had to remain quiet not to alert the night watch guards which were at the bow, so she headed towards the stern.
Tonight she wanted to explore the deck and pretend she was a sailor, or maybe a pirate. Where to first, Captain Elizabeth? She imagined her first mate asking her. The rope of the rigging leading to the crows nest caught her attention. Mr. Gibbs climbed up it earlier. She looked around. Quiet. No one would mind if the plucky 12-year-old tried climbing it herself would they?
Tumblr media
It was only all too late before Elizabeth realized the foolishness of her decision.
The fog had had left an imperceptible thin layer of moisture across the wood, and while she tried to stand on the railing, before she could reach for the rigging the ship’s bump in rocking rhythm against a wave caused her to slip backwards... headlong into the sea.
It all happened so suddenly she didn’t have time to gasp or scream before crashing into the dark waves below and being swallowed up by them. Flailing as she resurfaced, she was surrounded by fog and menacing dark wates. What she could make out that was the back of the HMS Dauntless was drifting further away from her, wave after wave.
“H-help!!” She screamed, gasping for air and desperately trying to stay afloat against waves that broke around her “Down here!!”
The child’s daydream had turned into a living nightmare. She tried swimming back to the Dauntless, hard as she tried, but sadly it was all in vain while the currents swept her like a bobbing cork into the opposite direction, until the ship itself disappeared into the fog. Elizabeth screamed in horror. It was the middle of the night. No one knew where she was in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean without even a liferaft. Helpless and frightened, all she could do was wail. For her parents, for Mr. Gibbs, for Lieutenant Norrington, someone, anyone, help, please. With every shout she coughed back salt water which stung her throat.
How long would she be out here? Would they ever find her? Elizabeth didn’t know how much time had passed, or how much longer it would be before she’d allow the sea to rock her to sleep. She was growing too cold to swim and too tired to shed any more tears. This... wasn’t what the adults called dying was it...? — As it began to feel increasingly difficult to keep her head above water, her own energy now betraying her, her eyes cast upwards. Though darkness and fog surrounded her, above there were bright glimmers of stars.
Good night, stars...
@anklesalltheway
The waves are surprisingly rough for such a calm night as a cursed ship roams the seas as if it were a lost pup searching for it's mother. A thick fog surrounds the area around the Flying Dutchman as she drifts on top of the ocean that she had sailed on for centuries. Her tattered and deteriorated sails flowed with the gentle wind as the sea crashes against her bow. Droplets of salt water spat at the figurehead of the grim reaper and it's scythe at the front of the ghostly vessel.
Stood at the top of the bow with a harsh gaze and a determined posture, was the captain of this cursed ship.
Davy Jones.
A cloud of smoke escaped through the siphon on the left side of his face, and faded into the thick fog that dared to not touch him. He was stood alone as he allowed his thoughts to enter his mind. His fellow crewmembers were most likely down below, either getting rest from the exhausting work that they had done the previous day, or playing Liar's Dice which annoyingly was their only entertainment.
Jones enjoyed being along on the top deck of his ship, no sounds of the cursed men yelling and ordering each other reaching his ears and disturbing the gentle quietness. Sure, Maccus came along to join him a couple of times however that had led to the two of them sharing in the misery together. They'd occasionally talk about the past, but that was rare and the last time they had done that was half a decade ago.
It was peaceful. To be up here with no disturbance at all.
Just the captain and his thoughts.
Jones liked to listen to the waves down below too, the ripples of the water as the sea allowed the Dutchman to pass on forwards. And the sails flapping along with the wind, the creaks and groans of the ship, all of those noises had relaxed Davy Jones since he had first started sailing so long ago as a child. Before he was tricked and cursed into this cruel eternity of being bound to a vessel until after ten years had passed. Jones had lost count how many times he had sent his furious curses to that heathen goddess for what she had done to him.
Took his whole life away, family too if that had even counted. He had never saw them again when he first started sailing on the Flying Dutchman. At least Maccus still stood by his side after all these miserable years though. He was there at Jones' side since even before they became adults.
Tumblr media
Before he had the chance to become even more frustrated and livid at his thoughts, an increasingly growing sense was filling within his cursed body. Jones quickly removed his pipe from his mouth and tapped it against the shell of his left claw rather quickly as he glanced around the decks of the Dutchman. The ash and contents spilled out and stained against his claw but he couldn't care less about it.
The captain was still alone, nobody had or were approaching him at this moment.
Bizarre.
Casting away his thoughts that began intruding in his mind once more, Jones focused on the feeling and steadied his breathing so that he could understand just what on earth he was currently sensing within him.
Panic. Distress. Terror.
All signs of a person that were on the verge of possibly dying and moving onto the afterlife and finding peace.
However, Davy Jones was not going to let them go so easily...

I feel like there aren’t nearly enough PotC AUs so I came up with one.
I present to you:
The library AU
In which a younger Jack (around his age in the flashback in dead men tell no tales) works at this really old library in an even older city called Port Royal. He is a Huge Pirate Nerd and goes out of his way to find old logbooks and saved money for years to buy a really old compass that he thought was cool. (In the end he managed to get a discount becuse it appeared to be broken) Sleeps at the library because he is completely broke. He loves the place and will tell litteraly everyone the story of how it almost burnt down a long time ago. Has made a point of making friends with the owner of the only bar in town, mr Gibbs.
Hector Barbossa is a college student who is currently working on a project about aztec culture and gods. Stays at the library way past closing time to work on it, despite having to bear with Jack’s late night shenanigans. Always sits by the window because there’s this really pretty girl who works at the café across the street. Jack keeps trying to push him into talking to her, but has yet to succeed. The only thing he knows about her is that her name is Margaret, and that she makes the café delicious apple pie.
The library’s most frequent visitors are Elizabeth Swann and her best friend Will Turner.(They’re not very old, that’s why they’re just friends) Elizabeth loves books about epic adventures, and since there’s not much more to do Will always joins her when she goes to the library. Or at least that’s what he claims to be the reason for it. Whenever Jack has the time he’ll tell them stories about his favourite pirates, which is not appreciated by one of the local policemen, James Norrington.
He’s a good friend of Elizabeth’s father and is really protective of her. He thinks that Jack’s stories will give her a bad sense of justice or something, it’s all very unclear.
That’s about as far as I’ve gotten. I really want to write something about this and I’ll be sure to post if I do. Please tell me if there are any characters you’d like to see in this AU

Hector Barbossa, Will Turner & Carina Smyth and PotC in general
Yeah, you guessed right, I finally watched Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge (a.k.a. Dead Men Tell No Tales) and now I feel strong urge to rant about it a bit. Mainly about my favorite pirate Hector Barbossa and relationships between characters in general but also about opportunities I think new movie wasted. Spoilers ahead!
From the original trilogy, Barbossa and Will Turner were my favorite characters. One because of his ruthless yet steadfast nature, the other because of loyalty and willingness to sacrifice for beloved and friends / allies. Jack always was a fun character but from perspective of time, he doesn’t really change much. And Elizabeth I liked in general, but the whole love triangle between her and almost all main cast of male characters was too much for me since I have little to none interest for unrequited romantic drama(s).
Will and Barbossa through the course of story changed in many ways. So before I will rant about them in more analytical way, let me tell you what disappointed me the most in recent movie:
The final scene between Will, Henry, Carina and Elizabeth (well, hello ex-Pirate King it was so nice to see you’re still alive) for the following reasons :
it would be cool to see at least some interaction between Elizabeth and Carina, because this movie really lacked presence of female characters (Carine and Witch/Shansa were like only two that really mattered but they were never seen in the same scene, what a shame, the witchcraft vs science has so potential!) but also Elizabeth was Pirate King that lead alliance of pirate lords to victory over Davy Jones & Beckett’s force and she won Barbossa’s respect, she deserved some attention too. Something more than Sparrow’s few words related to her body / sex.
The whole point of Flying Dutchman was to collect all souls who died at sea and carry them to the afterlife. I can forgive that Will couldn’t show up earlier and aid main team with help against Salazar for whatever reason - though I think it would be much interesting if Will Turner had offered to take the bunch of cursed undead to the other side but was refused because of Salazar’s hate for Sparrow (who once again would fail/suffer due to his own pride). Also, wouldn’t it be fun to see Carina’s face when she learns that Henry’s dad is a actually a captain of Flying Dutchman that just showed from the bottom of ocean in the middle of fight? Priceless.
BUT WHAT REALLY MAKES ME UPSET is no mention of Barbossa. I repeat: Will’s sacred task was to collect souls of people who died at sea, Barbossa drowned to save his daughter. So he should be taken by Flying Dutchman to afterlife. WOULD IT KILL ANYONE IF HENRY ACTUALLY INTRODUCED HIS GIRLFRIEND TO WILL, SO HE COULD SAY SOMETHING ALONG THE LINE THAT HE ALREADY KNOWS WHO CARINA IS BECAUSE BARBOSSA TOLD HIM EVERYTHING DURING THEIR LAST(?) MEETING?? Seriously, I would love to see dead!Hector and Will meeting after so many years.
Also, shouldn’t Will be dead for good after curse was removed? His heart was cut out of the body like 17/18? years ago
One more thing that upset me so badly is lack of recognition - Henry was son of Elizabeth and Will who both played major role in events of previous trilogy. Elizabeth even won Barbossa’s respect in the end while Will was fated to became a new captain of Flying Dutchman and since then it was quite possible that he would meet other characters after their death at sea. Yet, only Sparrow knew about Henry’s parents (and learned about Carina’s connection to Barbossa), while there wasn’t any reason why Barbossa couldn’t be informed about young Turner especially since  a) Henry talked quite openly about saving dad from curse and b) if Henry knew about Sparrow, there wasn’t any reason why he wouldn’t hear about Barbossa and Gibbs, so he could just said his whole name and biological ties (like Will did in the first movie, “My name is Will Turner! My father was Bootstrap Bill Turner. His blood runs in my veins”). That should make anyone think twice about tying up / trying kill a son of captain of fucking Flying Dutchman and (ex-)pirate king.
There is so missed opportunity to acknowledge: former events, fame of Elizabeth and Will, but also a chance to dispute about magic & science and for Henry (and still unknowingly Carina) to hear about his (their) parents, what people they were before.
All things aside, I may never call this movie a true masterpiece yet I enjoyed watching it and frankly Barbossa & Carina plot interested me the most. Maybe because Carine in many ways is similar to Will Turner from the original movie. She doesn’t know her family and her love for father is a bit colored by her own imagination (like that he was a good man while in truth he is one of the most feared pirates). She is very smart but at the same time she is looked down because of her gender - if she was a man, other people would call her a science genius not a witch that should be killed in public execution. So I guess we can agree she hard worked to get so far despite all the hate and rejection by society. Sort of like Will who worked so hard at his swordsmanship and blacksmithing yet all the praise was given to his drunken useless master. And both met their supposedly dead fathers (pirates!) just to lost them so suddenly.
The fact that Barbossa cared so much for Carina’s mother - who could be just a prostitute? - made me thinks that he is one of really few male characters in PotC that had more complex relationship with women in general. Of course, we have the whole “love triangle” involving Elizabeth and Will, Jack and James Norrington (and later Sao Fang??) but then again through the series we saw scenes when Jack was slapped by angry prostitutes or is implied he had one night stand relationships or still chose being pirate over any relationship. Not to mention awful many sexual overtones toward both Elizabeth or Carina.
Will was more respectful towards female characters in general but then again, this is Will we talk.
It seems like Barbossa was in sort of long-term relationship with Margaret Smyth; he was aware about their child (or did he learned that after her death?) and was near the place where Margaret died since he personally gave the baby to an orphanage with note who she was (Carina Smyth) and a book as a sort of farawell gift. We know Barbossa named his daughter after the The Brightest Star in the North - a star that lead to home, so was an important symbol. Ultimate Barbossa chose his own freedom over duties to family, but then again he was already(?) well known pirate so maybe it wasn’t that selfish choice after all. I swear, the moment when he figured out that Carina was his daughter, the way it affected him was amazing moment to watch.
It’s sad that father and daughter didn’t have much time to catch up on. Still, Barbossa - the cruel, ruthless pirate lord - so easily thrown everything away for  barely known daughter. Also, he was one of few male characters in the movie who trusted her knowledge & skills despite her gender nor make a joke at her expense. What frankly reminds me about Elizabeth and the way their relationship changed through the series. In the first movie he could be real jerk towards her (at least two times he said something with sexual?? overtones) but then he didn’t go around talking about her like Sparrow did. The more they worked together, the more Barbossa respected her in the end. I think their duo is similar to Turner & Sparrow team; the same as Will changed while working along Jack, young Swann’s character grew up under Hector’s influences (is it safe to say she became sort of his protege?). Elizabeth at least 2 times in saga was inspirated by Barbossa’s words that she actually used in her monologies to win approval of other pirates:
Barbossa: “[...] the code is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules.”
Elizabeth: “You're pirates. Hang the Code and hang the rules! They're more like guidelines.”
or:
Barbossa: “In another age, at this very spot, the First Brethren Court captured the sea goddess and bound her in her bones. That was a mistake. Oh, we tamed the seas for ourselves, aye. But opened the door to Beckett and his ilk. Better were the days when mastery of seas came not from bargains struck with eldritch creatures, but from the sweat of a mars brow and the strength of his back alone. You all know this to be true.”
Elizabeth: “You're right. Then what shall we die for? You will listen to me. Listen! The Brethren will still be looking here to us, to the Black Pearl, to lead. And what will they see? Frightened bilge rats aboard a derelict ship? No. No, they will see free men and freedom! And what the enemy will see is the flash of our cannons. They will hear the ring of our swords, and they will know what we can do. By the sweat of our brows, and the strength of our backs... ...and the courage of our hearts. Gentlemen... ...hoist the colors.“
Beside Carina and Elizabeth, Barbossa had also deals with “witches”. Tia Dalma brougt him back from dead so in return he helped to free Calypso from her human form. That sounds rather like strictly business than anything else (though I need to rewatch the trilogy) still one may wonder why she chose Barbossa from all of the people?
Now, the newest movie presented Shansa, a witch that Hector saved from noose and in return she helped to destroy all his enemies / rivals on sea. The witch adviced him to stay on land as it was the only place where Salazar can’t attack / kill him. Barbossa refused, because first of all he is a pirate and he will not let undead captain to take away his treasures. For what she replied if those are really worth dying for it? What made me feel like their relationship isn’t so strictly down to just bussiness and maybe they were fond of each other on their own specific way? Like, maybe it’s just me, but Barbossa seems to have better relationship with younger women than with most men, so maybe it’s all unconsciously linked to his lost daughter? The witch could be around the age of Carina, so maybe it somehow helped. I mean, Barbossa was quite protective and fond of the monkey Jack, so maybe the pet and later, the witch filled the void in Hector’s heart as the replacement for the lost family? Yeah, that probably more headcanon than a real matters, but still, Barbossa was really touched (and proud) when it comes to just-met Carina, so maybe it is not that far stretched after all.
As much as the movie was fun to watch, I would love to see more interaction between Carina and Barbossa or dead!Barbossa and the captain of Flying Dutchman (and seriously, Will shouldn’t be cured). That said, the idea of the next generation of Barbossa and Turner became one merry family while Jack can just watch the “happy end” from afar makes me smile everytime when I think about the irony(?).

… 'tis to glory we steer,
With heads carried high,
we will banish all fear;
To honour we call you,
For who are so free
as the sons and daughters of the waves?

We interrupt your dashboard scrolling to announce I have officially found the faceclaim for Margaret’s Mother. Yes, Lizzie’s Grandma.
Presenting Annette Crosbie from The Slipper & The Rose...
... as Mrs. Julia Nelson Gibbs!

in a test edit of the gibbs family (Captain & Mama Gibbs, Joshie, & Maggie) together I think they resemble each other enough to pass as fam XD?
She’s such a minor character in even Margaret’s backstory, but I feel like while Margaret more took after her father, Mama Gibbs played a very important role in her life too. I also always wanted something special about Margaret’s mother’s side of the family being salt-veined and full of sailors (that even Lizzie takes after) too, so I’m curious about Mama Gibb’s character / family / antics / maybe even lore or family secret idk :D
Bonus:
Mama Gibbs & Maggie having a heart-to-heart about Margaret’s arranged marriage to Weatherby Swann:

v: Curse of the Black Spot
Tumblr media
“Promise me, Margaret... when I am gone, you shall never go to sea.”
- Captain Charles Gibbs, Margaret’s father’s dying wish
⚓️
"Yer father owes me a heavy debt fer savin' his ship from bein' sunken down tah the dark abyss. And with him no longah in this world, who's tah pay his debt that he ran so far away from? Tell me, did he ever warn ye tah never sail the dreaded seas- uh?"
Margaret holds her ground, but her indignant expression betrays her to his question about something her father only ever spoke of on his deathbed, “How did you—” she bites her tongue and takes a step back from him. The black spot - that only recently appeared once she sailed into open seas - in her palm numbly aches the longer she’s in Jones’ presence.
"Remove the bandage around yer hand. If there is noo somethin' Ah am lookin' fer and there is merely an injury on yer palm, then Ah will proceed tah let yah and yer fellow friends go without any further harm- uh."
Margaret took one final heavy breath before undoing the bandage and indignantly presenting her open palm with the black spot to Jones.
Jones chuckled once more as his milky blue eyes landed upon the familiar black spot in her open palm. The spot that he had once given to her father, and now it had been passed on hereditarily. Jones snorted with amusement in response to her shock. He pointed at her hand with his left claw. “Yeh don’ know what the black spot is, do yah?”
“Among pirates, a pronouncement of guilt. It’s a sign that the person marked with it has been marked for death.”
"While the black spot shares a mark with death indeed, only ah give it tah an individual who owes their servitude tah the Dutchman. In this case, yer fool of a father received it and never repaid his dept- uh."
“... and the debt to be repaid...?”

Joshamee & Margaret Gibbs
"The ship in port is the safer one, But it's not the reason it was made" So forgive me if I wander off And forgive me more if I should stay.

We were opposites at birth I was steady as a hammer No one worried 'cause They knew just where I'd be And they said you were the crooked kind And that you'd never have no worth But you were always gold to me

Teething
Your teeth are growing sharper, until they can rend flesh as easily as air. Your hunger is growing ardent, the unquenchable fire of yearning burning steady in your gums. You want so much - you want to devour it all. The thrill of the chase becomes more and more of a rush until you finally sink your canines into someone. Sometimes your smile feels so wide, as if you could swallow reality whole.
mun rambling where there’s not enough room in the tags for: So accurate for Elizabeth! Just from how hungry she is for something that almost always feels beyond her grasp until she can seize it with her own two hands teeth and almost living in a fantasy she’s so hungry for it... she’s not just going to be a pirate, but of legendary status as the Pirate King... to like being a heroine in an otome romance and kissing her way to victory

Wanderer's Ache
You need to leave, you can't stay. You've forgotten how to do it - how to set your roots, how to unpack the moving boxes. Staying too long isn't an option, the steady thrum of mixed curiosity and dread always propelling you forward. You've burnt all your bridges, leaving a trail of shattered connections every time you leave. But still you can't stay, can't even sit still. You tire of life as it happens, wishing you could quit your job and just become something else - anything at all. You've forgotten how to make a place into a home, feeling content only in novelty, at home only on the road.
mun rambling where there’s not enough room in the tags for: This is so accurate for Margaret too - notably after becoming a widow in the Widow & the Seawolf. Because in the ‘prologue’ while happily married & raising a loving family, she’s not restless, but grounded, making the Port Royal Governor’s Mansion into “Swann Manor” and being a great philanthropist and benefactress and behind-the-scenes Lady Governor. Let alone patroness of the arts and relishing her life among the Royal Court for all its what-have-you. She enjoys travel and sometimes gets wanderlust, but why change a life she already loves and protects? Because gosh losing her husband - so suddenly, helplessly, beyond her control and anything she can do or could have done - utterly breaks her and turns her world upside down. And during the years of mourning Weatherby, so begins her wanderer’s ache which only grows, and her need to leave Swann Manor (besides the new Governor’s arrival). She doesn’t burn her bridges, but a part of her possibly does want to start distancing herself from her late husband’s connections too only because they will remind her of her life with him and only restart her cycle of mourning again, and she wants to be at peace in a new beginning somehow. But she doesn’t know how to be reborn this late in life so she can only look to the past. Back to her far-gone youth before she was married, living in Bristol by the sea and harbor as a Captain’s daughter. But she cannot go back to Bristol or that life or her youth, so she has this intense wanderlust now she doesn’t know how to cope with and restlessly tries to find herself again and learn how to cope with life without a heart. And so next she needs the change of scenery in St Martin with the house renovating project (and even then she hardly settles down there because she has this intense call of the sea) and the event of meeting Jones happens and in spite of everything (her wrestling with feelings & her common sense) she continues to correspond with him and she starts looking into all these nautical lore and things etc. In her state of grief she makes some decisions she wouldn’t have made (be it in impulse or against her better judgement), but who knows call it rebounding or her innate “Pandora” curiosity, she can never say she regrets any of it once she does start finding herself again. but all along and never ending she’s become so restless and she just wants change. she’s so exhausted but she wants to go far away. she wants the past. she wants to be reborn. she wants to love again. she wants to wander.
