Translation Errors and Opinions
Tumblr media
Throughout the years, there have been different interpretations and opinions on the unicorn. Writers like Ctesias, Aristotle, Shepard, Pliny the Elder, and Marco Polo have submitted their own thoughts and descriptions on that mythical creature.
Ctesias, who I have written about before, wrote “Their bodies are white, their heads dark red, and their eyes blue. They have a horn on the forehead which is about a foot and a half-length. The dust filed from this horn is administered in a potion as a protection against deadly drugs. The base of this horn, for some two hands’-breadth above the brow, is pure white: the upper part is sharp and of a vivid crimson; and the remainder, or middle portion, is black.” This description comes from a book Ctesias wrote around 398 B.C. called Indika after a trip to Persia. Ctesias’s unicorn writings shaped the way others wrote about them as well. I think that an interesting detail about this depiction is Ctesias saying they had dark red heads. Most of the paintings and illustrations I have seen of unicorns never included a red head. If you were to look up a unicorn picture, they’re mostly all white. The horn is also not depicted as fully white either. Ctesias of course did not see a real unicorn because, well, they do not exist, so he relied on what people told him about these animals. In The Lore of The Unicorn by Odell Shepard, he makes the point that this version of the unicorn closely matches the Indian rhinoceros. Ctesias wrote that the horn had healing properties which people believed was true for rhinoceroses' horns in this part of the world. The horn color variation is also another characteristic of Indian rhinoceros. So, did he purposefully write this false depiction for notoriety, or did he simply misinterpret what those people told him? I like to think that without Ctesias incorrect telling of the unicorn, there would be a lot of different writing about them. Especially the horn’s medicinal properties. Maybe people would have been hunting rhinoceros instead? Maybe the rhinoceros would be on the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom instead?
Shepard was not the only one to point out these flaws. Many years before Shepard, Aristotle criticized Ctesias description of the unicorn. Aristotle claimed that Ctesias was not a trustworthy source and questioned his depiction of the unicorn as a misinterpretation. In Aristotle’s History of Animals, he wrote “We have not observed any single-hooved, two-horned animals. But there are a few animals that are single-horned and single-hooved, like the Indian donkey.” By single-single hooved he means hooves like a horse that do not have a separation in their hooves like a goat has. He is suggested that the unicorn Ctesias is talking about is actually an Indian donkey.
Pliny the Elder wrote a slightly different description of the unicorn in his Natural History book in 100 C.E. He wrote “the unicorn has a body like a horse, a head like a deer, feet like an elephant, a tail like a boar; it has a deep bellow, a singly black horn two cubits long projecting from the middle of its forehead.” “Feet like an elephant” is also another depiction that is not seen in most of the paintings and illustrations. Marco Polo in fact wrote a similar depiction for Pliny's that also included the elephant feet characteristic in 1298 C.E. But a different twist that Polo claims “They are very ugly brutes to look at. They are not at all such as we describe them when we relate that they let themselves by captured by virgins, but clean contrary to our notions.” This is the first time I am seeing someone claim that the unicorn is ugly. A lot of the readings I have done for my research includes them being called beautiful and majestic.
These different descriptions of the unicorns from different writes are very interesting and fascinating to read what they believed was the truth.
Source for the Ctesias quote comes from The Lore of The Unicorn by Odell Shepard

St. Christopher, The Christbearer
Dog-man, Cynocephali Saint, christened by baby Jesus after helping him cross a river.
Tumblr media
The Dogheaded people
They were seen by conquerors, explorers, evangelists and described in detail. Alexander the Great, Marco Polo, St. Augustine, Christopher Columbus all described these creatures. You also have Anubis the Egyptian god and St.Christopher who was converted to Catholicism and achieved Saint-hood by helping believers cross a river.
There were letters corresponding with the Vatican on whether or not these dog headed men could be saved or not. The Catholic church was not surprised and simply asked if their eyes were on the front of their heads or on the sides. Apparently dog headed men were nothing new to cultures around the world.
'Ratramnus’s Epistola de Cynocephalis, is a letter written concerning if dog headed men could be saved. The response was yes based on the evidence that they showed the ability to have free will; they wore clothes, kept animals, had relationships, and obeyed laws etc. So they could choose salvation and therefore could be worth ministering to.
( Canaanites = canines, described as cannibals and great fighters who did detestable things.)
In Tibet there was recorded history of over 200,000 living in a village. They lived in Parts of India along the Mountain Range, there are traces of them in the Celtic lands they lived in Ireland.
St. Christopher is the patron saint for travelers. Dog-headed people often have acted as guides, ferries and Shepards. I will cover this in a future post, which will feature Xolotl and Aztec Gods, including Anubis!
Canines are interwoven into human history.
On these mountains there live men with the head of a dog, whose clothing is the skin of wild beasts. They speak no language, but bark like dogs, and in this manner make themselves understood by each other. Their teeth are larger than those of dogs, their nails like those of these animals, but longer and rounder. They inhabit the mountains as far as the river Indus. Their complexion is swarthy. They are extremely just, like the rest of the Indians with whom they associate.  They understand the Indian language but are unable to converse, only barking or making signs with their hands and fingers by way of reply, like the deaf and dumb. They are called by the Indians Calystrii, in Greek Cynocephali (“dog-headed “). [They live on raw meat.] They number about 120,000.  Near the sources of this river1 grows a purple flower, from which is obtained a purple dye, as good in quality as the Greek and of an even more brilliant hue. In the same district there is an animal about the size of a beetle, red as cinnabar, with very long feet, and a body as soft as that of a worm. It breeds on the trees which produce amber, eats their fruit and kills them, as the woodlouse destroys the vines in Greece. The Indians crush these insects and use them for dyeing their robes and tunics and anything else they wish. The Cynocephali living on the mountains do not practice any trade but live by hunting. When they have killed an animal they roast it in the sun. They also rear numbers of sheep, goats, and asses, drinking the milk of the sheep and whey made from it. They eat the fruit of the Siptakhora, whence amber is procured, since it is sweet. They also dry it and keep it in baskets, as the Greeks keep their dried grapes. They make rafts which they load with this fruit together with well-cleaned purple flowers and 260 talents of amber, with the same quantity of the purple dye, and 1000 additional talents of amber, which they send annually to the king of India. They exchange the rest for bread, flour, and cotton stuffs with the Indians, from whom they also buy swords for hunting wild beasts, bows, and arrows, being very skillful in drawing the bow and hurling the spear. They cannot be defeated in war, since they inhabit lofty and inaccessible mountains. Every five years the king sends them a present of 300,000 bows, as many spears, 120,000 shields, and 50,000 swords. They do not live in houses, but in caves. They set out for the chase with bows and spears, and as they are very swift of foot, they pursue and soon overtake their quarry. The women have a bath once a month; the men do not have a bath at all, but only wash their hands. They anoint themselves three times a month with oil made from milk and wipe themselves with skins. The clothes of men and women alike are not skins with the hair on, but skins tanned and very fine. The richest wear linen clothes, but they are few in number. They have no beds, but sleep on leaves or grass. He who possesses the greatest number of sheep is considered the richest, and so in regard to their other possessions. All, both men and women, have tails above their hips, like dogs, but longer and more hairy. They are just, and live longer than any other men, 170, sometimes 200 years (Ctesias, “Indica”, from Photius I).

Exploring Brandon Boyd’s Collaborative Art Projects
Brandon Boyd, the renowned lead vocalist of the rock band Incubus, has made significant strides not only in music but also in the visual arts. His collaborative art projects have showcased his multifaceted talent and passion for creativity. These projects not only highlight his artistic evolution but also emphasize the powerful synergy created when diverse art forms intersect. This exploration delves into the various collaborative endeavors Boyd has undertaken, shedding light on how his artistic vision has transcended traditional boundaries.
Brandon Boyd: An Artistic Journey
Brandon Boyd journey into the world of art began long before he became a household name with Incubus. Born into a family that valued creativity, Boyd was exposed to art and music from a young age. His early influences included his parents, who were both artists, and the vibrant artistic community of Southern California. This nurturing environment fostered his love for drawing and painting, which he pursued alongside his musical ambitions.
The transition from music to visual arts was a natural progression for Boyd. His experiences as a musician enriched his artistic perspective, allowing him to infuse his visual art with the same emotional depth and intensity that characterized his music. This seamless integration of his dual passions is evident in his collaborative art projects, where music and visual art coexist harmoniously.
Notable Collaborative Projects
Boyd's collaborative efforts have spanned various domains, reflecting his versatility as an artist. One of his most notable collaborations was with fellow musicians. He partnered with artists like Ben Kenney and Mike Einziger from Incubus to create multimedia projects that combined live music performances with dynamic visual displays. These collaborations not only entertained audiences but also pushed the boundaries of traditional concert experiences.
In addition to his work with musicians, Boyd has also teamed up with visual artists. His collaboration with Shepard Fairey, the artist behind the iconic Obama "Hope" poster, resulted in a series of visually stunning pieces that melded Boyd's intricate line work with Fairey's bold graphic style. This partnership highlighted the complementary nature of their artistic approaches, resulting in works that resonated with fans of both artists.
Multimedia Fusion
The fusion of music and visual art is a recurring theme in Boyd's collaborative projects. He has often sought to create immersive experiences that engage multiple senses. One such project is "Sons of the Sea," a solo music endeavor where Boyd's artwork accompanied the album. The visual elements provided a deeper narrative layer to the music, creating a cohesive and enriching experience for the audience.
Another notable example is his work with video artist Marco Brambilla. Together, they crafted a series of music videos that were not merely promotional tools but standalone pieces of art. These videos combined Boyd's lyrical storytelling with Brambilla's avant-garde visual techniques, resulting in captivating and thought-provoking works that challenged conventional music video aesthetics.
Impact and Reception
Boyd's collaborative art projects have garnered critical acclaim and public admiration. Critics have praised his ability to seamlessly blend different art forms, creating works that are greater than the sum of their parts. His projects have been featured in prestigious galleries and exhibitions, further cementing his reputation as a versatile and innovative artist.
The public response has been equally enthusiastic. Fans of Boyd's music have embraced his visual art endeavors, appreciating the depth and creativity he brings to each project. His ability to connect with audiences on multiple levels has made his collaborative works highly influential in both the contemporary art and music scenes.
Future Prospects
Looking ahead, Boyd shows no signs of slowing down. He has hinted at several upcoming projects that promise to further explore the intersection of music and visual art. Potential collaborations with emerging artists and seasoned veterans alike are on the horizon, suggesting that Boyd's artistic journey is far from over.
One exciting prospect is his plan to integrate virtual reality into his art projects. This innovative approach aims to create even more immersive experiences, allowing audiences to step inside his artistic world. By continually pushing the boundaries of his craft, Boyd is poised to remain a significant figure in the art world for years to come.
In conclusion, Brandon Boyd's collaborative art projects exemplify his boundless creativity and ability to transcend traditional artistic boundaries. His work not only enriches the cultural landscape but also inspires others to explore the possibilities of interdisciplinary art. As Boyd continues to innovate and collaborate, his contributions to both music and visual art will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy. For more on his remarkable journey and artistic endeavors, you can explore the extensive work of Brandon Boyd in both fields.

Stockholm: Fotographiska
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nirgendwo parkende Autoreihen. Stattdessen Fahrradschuppen und E-Roller Parkplätze.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bleibt gespannt :)

"You think he would vie for power on Omega? No." It's a gut feeling, strong enough that she shakes her head vehemently. Her gut feeling's been her moral compass all her life, and with the exception of a few spectacular fuck-ups (case in point: Inaros) it has stood her in good stead.
And even when it comes to Marco... can Naomi really regret him irrevocably when doing so would render null and void the existence of her only child?
She wants to think about the bigger picture here – Marco on Omega, in talks with Eleanor Guthrie, that new piece of information about a turian vigilante gunning for Aria's head – but her brain keeps pulling her back to Filip, like motherhood is an overwrite affecting even the deepest neural pathways.
It's a tightrope act, balancing gut feelings and moral compasses and the roadkill corpses of guilt that she amassed along the way.
"If you find out anything, will you let me know?" She asks, and it's as much about the son as it is about the father. Sometimes the tightrope act is balancing her selfish interests versus the good of the many.
In any case, Jack's right – if he's gonna find out anything, it's going to be through Guthrie's right-hand man.
And so what if Varric heard Marco Inaros ask Eleanor Guthrie about a certain ship called Walrus?
So what if the Normandy has been on the Walrus' trail for the past month?
So what if the Walrus' captain is on a hunt himself?
So what if whatever the Walrus is hunting is important enough to divest Shepard from the trail of the Collectors?
So what if the Urca de Lima carries something so alien, so unfathomable, that it could turn the tide in the war against the Reapers–
–or whatever aspirations to galactic supremacy Cerberus have?
Jack visibly hesitated at the question. “ A little, while Marco was in there, ” he gestured with the nod of his head to Eleanor Guthrie’s office door, “ But not much was shared, really. ” It had been small talk only for the most part; Filip had been glad to see him, particularly after so long, but in characteristic adolescent fashion he was less interested in the old man at the bar than he was the group of asari and human ladies gathered together on one of the nearby tables. Jack wouldn’t use the key phrase to reel him in, either ( I know your mother, and I know what a shit your father is ). It wasn’t fair on him, it wasn’t fair on Naomi, and it would only attract Marco’s attention and risk severing this tenuous link he had to Naomi’s son.
Better to hold out and play both sides until the opportune moment presented itself to put Naomi and Filip in the same room, and help his friend as he knew she would in return.
He watched her play with her whisky glass, and instinctively reached over to place his hand on her arm this time. Sympathetic words were not his forte, but surely none were even adequate in this case. What sympathy could be offered? Her son was still gone, and she was no closer to finding him and pulling him back from the calculating grip of his father.
Speaking of, Naomi was right: there was no need for Marco Inaros to appear on Omega in person unless it was intended as some sort of show or display. Jack had heard so little of him lately that he’d silently hoped he’d fallen off the face of the galaxy, but sadly everything about this sudden re-emergence was deliberate. He wanted to be seen visiting Eleanor Guthrie, knew the feathers it would ruffle not only here on Omega, with its crews and gangs vying for dominance, but off station too. Captain Flint certainly wouldn’t be happy to hear he had competition, not after rumours swirled of how closely he had been working with Guthrie lately.
“ Your guess is as good as mine — unless I get lucky with Varric later, in which case my odds of a correct prediction exponentially increase.” Eleanor’s right-hand was notoriously tight-lipped and slippery, but Jack had charm in spades and Varric could rarely resist his flattery. “ Omega’s as messy as ever, but maybe Marco heard about Archangel and his disciples cleaning house. ” Realising that this was a development Naomi might have missed during her time away, Jack sought to clarify.“ Turian vigilante do-gooder intent on dismantling things here. If he gets to Aria, he’ll certainly leave a power void to fill.”

We all fracture in different ways. Mordin's conscience haunted him. Maelon crossed the line into barbaric experiments. And myself... I went searching for whatever gods created the rules for this unfortunate universe.
