100 supporters! Have you heard about Kevin Kelly’s blog about 1000 true fans? The idea is that if an artist (musician, entrepreneur, whatever) can get one thousand fans to support their art, they will make a good living. That’s all they need. Seth Godin takes it a slightly different way. He suggests you create something for the “smallest viable audience.” Sci F’Irish music is definitely a small audience. Any time you fuse two distinctly different audiences together, you shrink the size of your audience. But is it be viable? Yesterday, my 100th supporter made a pledge on Kickstarter (thanks Kris!). That’s one tenth of that 1000 true fans. It pushes Selcouth closer to my big stretch goal of $7500 and two more songs for you. It’s just amazing that so many people appreciate what I do. It’s exciting to see how passionate You are about Selcouth. Selcouth: “when everything feels strange and different yet you find it marvelous anyway.” To this day, I still feel outside every social circle. I feel strange and different. And I’m happy with that. I’m happy to create music that doesn’t fit the style of everyone else, be it rock, Celtic, folk, geek or whatever. I’m proud of the music I make. I’m guessing you’re proud of it too. Because 100 people—100 of my true fans (there are lots more than that) stepped up to say “keep creating music that embraces my strange”. dream job: Honestly... I’ve kind of got it? I’m a stage manager with a contract, but enough free time to freelance on projects that interest me.

dream trip: Honestly... there’s so many places I want to see. But right now, I think I’d like to see Eastern Europe. Or southeast Asia.

It is full of independent Celtic music artists from around the globe and is hosted by the incomparable Celt Father @marcgunn . Marketing is easy for me. Selling is not. . I don't like to sell. Yes, I have full faith in the quality of my music. I even "market" most of 23 albums with a theme. That makes them easier to sell. . Like Firefly? Get these CDs and songbook. . Drinking songs? Do you want Irish or Sci Fi drinking songs? . Like hobbits? This album is fun. . Like Cats? Buy these 2 CDs or save money with the Celtfather Classics USB. . If that's how conversations happened at Renaissance festivals, it would be easy to sell music. It's never like that. . The toughest part is I have to get folks over to my merch table. That requires announcing it at shows. It's one of the reasons I've come to love the "You have C-D-s?" call and response. It just makes it easier for me to draw attention to that. But that still doesn't mean I even mention the merch table. . Instead, I post a picture, to casually remind anyone going to the Mid-South Renaissance Faire to drop by the table and check out the CDs. . Oy! If you have any good suggestions on how to do this better... at shows, I would love your thoughts. . It's also difficult online. And I have a Celtic Halloween Music Special scheduled for YouTube next Thursday, October 25 at 8:30 PM CST.
