I've been rewatching adventure time and I feel like ur the only one I know that likes orv and AT that I follow. I need you to make a comparison

I've been thinking about this for quite some time. Spoilers for AT, Fionna & Cake, and ORV.

Fionna and Dokja are my initial comparison point. Both dream, in a sense, of a world where they can be more than what they are. Where life is exciting and full of magic and danger. Where they are the hero/protagonist who kicks butt. Their acclimation to finding themselves in said worlds is different. Dokja is immediately met with death and violence which the 4th wall insulates him from, while Fionna starts off in cutesy and relatively safe Candy Kingdom forest..

Both stories handle wish fulfillment and the real-world consequences they create. Fionna shows a complete disregard for the dreams and hopes of those around her. I can't remember who posted it, but she was fine with potentially ruining everyone's lives for her own personal happiness. Making the world magic may stop Gary and Marshall from meeting, or Hunter from starting their hidden garden. Dokja is in his element. While he faces unimaginable horrors, he's still having fun. He's the MC, he's beating the constellation, the Yoo Joonghyuk is following him, he's making the ending to his favorite story. The second comparison I want to make is Simon and Dokja. Simon is the other half of Dokja, the sad, depressed, and self-sacrificial side. Simon has spent the last 12 years trying to bring Betty back. He's completely alone in a strange world in a way that no one, including Marceline and Finn, can truly understand. He doesn't value himself or his life and is willing to throw it away at a moment's notice. This was true during the apocalypse when he'd use the crown at any sign of danger.

Simon is also blind. He had a major flaw when it came to his relationship with Betty. He was selfish and self-centered. Dokja also has a major flaw, he ignores his companions' feelings and wishes. At some point, ORV becomes a story about people trying to beat into their friend that they love him and value him. Joonghyuk tried to bind his soul so he couldn't run off and die, again. Dokja doesn't listen. He consistently ignores and dismisses their concerns, usurps their autonomy, and causes them all unimaginable grief. it's selfish. They are both selfish but have deluded themselves into thinking otherwise.

Marceline loves Simon as much as he loves her. She gave up her most prized possession to help him at a moment's notice. How would she feel if Simon had become Ice King again? She was devasted during "I Remember You," when he left her after the crown had taken hold. Simon never considers what becoming the ice king again would do to her.

All three are stories of wish fulfillment and the realization that what we desire may not be what we truly need. they are stories of learning to see and understand other people and learning to value ourselves.

Anon, thanks for the ask. I've been mulling over this for months and will continue to do so. I wouldn't have thought to compare them.

🤚 You were introduced to Shigaraki when you were young and as you started to develop your quirk became his protector. 🤚 He’d often find that his hand rested on your neck, two fingers over the bite marks in your neck. He matched skin tones with someone… Even if they were a vampire. 🤚 Indifferent to the guitar really, he often thinks that it gets in the way on more stealthy missions but he liked that you were able to fight without it, and found more joy in watching you punch someone across the room. 🤚 Sometimes people didn’t see you until it was too late, you might be the last thing they see after disrespecting Shigaraki or injuring him in some way.

No one could see you, you had been sitting on the bar behind Shigaraki, your legs dangling down behind him as he leant against your shins looking at the new recruits, Dabi and Toga. You were watching them carefully, your guitar rested behind the bar close enough to grab if you needed it, they talked but you noticed the movement of Dabi before Shigaraki did, you grabbed the guitar from behind the bar swinging it around stopping just short of Dabi’s neck “be careful now.” You warned, you held the forearm of your free arm resting on top of Shigaraki’s head and you rested your chin on your own arm. “Are you sure that you need him?” “We need them all unfortunately.” Shigaraki answered “Plus as annoying as he is, I believe he’s going to be useful.” “He does seem like the most capable of a lot.” You shrugged. “Mmm.” He hummed “you can drop the axe.” You sat up as you pulled back the axe, it rested on your shoulder as you slumped forward. “What?” Shigaraki mumbled as he looked at you posture. “I don’t trust him.” You answered as Dabi smirked at you, eyes easily moving over you seemingly assessing you. “So who’s the bodyguard?” Dabi asked. “None of your business.” Shigaraki answered as he turned his back to them, the conversation over as he rested the handheld console that he was playing on your thighs, as you played with his hair and Kurogiri showed the new arrivals to the rooms they could use if they wanted.

🔥 Dabi met you before he ended up in the league, he actually went looking for you after hearing about you through the thugs that he was beating to a pulp. 🔥 Dabi then watched you like an absolute creeper for a couple of weeks, gathering information and trying to figure out just what your quirk was. 🔥 He definitely liked your style, the way you dressed, carried yourself and spoke to other people. 🔥 He approached you when he got all the information that he could from watching you.

You were sitting on the roof of the building watching people go by, there were a number of different objects next to you that had been drained of their colour, Dabi didn’t think that it was sunny enough to warrant the hat that you had decided to wear “thought vampires couldn’t sit in the sun.” He finally said, you glanced back at him, eyes moving over him for a second before going back to the people milling around under you. “Vampires can sit in the sun as long as we’re protected from direct sunlight.” You answered. “You’ve been watching me, what do you want?” “You knew?” He asked. “Thought you were sneaky?” You asked. “There’s a lot that you don’t know about me.” “Yeah?” He asked, he stepped forward and you leaned back resting on your hands. “I wouldn’t get too close, you know that guitar isn’t just a fashion statement.” You warned him. “I know.” He nodded “I’ve seen you use it, impressive.” He continued forward until he was sitting on the ledge next to you. “What do you want?” You asked. “You seem bored.” He mumbled. “I’m bored of you dodging the question, what do you want?” You asked. “I want to offer you a prospect.” He answered. “Uh huh.” You grunted. “I want to take down someone and you could help me.” He answered. “Who?” You asked. “What?” He asked. “Who do you want to take down?” You asked. “Endeavour.” He answered. “Now that is a challenge.” You smirked, your fangs flashing in the sun. “You’d better tell me how you plan to do this and I’ll decide whether I join you.”

🦎 Spinner was very good at withholding judgement until he'd met someone or seen someone in action which is why he never judged you for your supposed vampire attributes. 🦎 He honestly thinks the guitar is pretty cool, an instrument that doubles as weapons, and always loves when people question whether it’s a real weapon or not. 🦎 On that note Spinner never gets tired of you singing, whether you're just singing to yourself or singing for the rest of the gang (Magni and Toga are often the ones that make requests). 🦎 Your ability to go from a warm presence to a threatening entity, was honestly amazing to him.

Spinner had lost track of you a while back, you had been split up during the ambush by Redestros men, he had seen evidence of you being around considering there were objects that were primary red that had lost their colour, if you were drinking during battle you were having you use your abilities in excessive amounts. Spinner should have been paying more attention when the hulking weight smashed into his side, he recognised the grunts, it was you in your larger bat form. “You need a hand?” He asked. “I mean if you're not too busy.” You shrugged as he looked behind you at the group that had followed the larger man, he noted that you were changing back to your humanoid form and bass guitar thrown over your shoulder. “Are you hungry, do you need anything?” He asked. “No there was enough around here to get what I needed now, I just really want these guys to go away.” You answered, swinging the axe end of the base cutting the closest man’s head clean off. “Wow.” He mumbled eyes widening and cheeks heating, if his skin wasn’t green you would have seen a blush. “You okay?” You asked a smirk taking over your face as you dodged a hit from one of others, Spinner napped out of it throwing a dagger landing it straight in his heart. “I’m fine.” He mumbled as you giggled, killing yet another one of them before moving over to him and pressing a kiss to his cheek. “Come on let’s finish this, find the boss and get this over with so we can get back to doing nothing.” You ordered. “Sure thing.” He chuckled, cutting down another attacker.

Marceline often made you angry on purpose, knowing that she would be able to dodge most of your punches, so she wasn't afraid to fight you. It was only when you changed your shape that she realized it was time for her to get serious. You were becoming a hybrid of a human and a dinosaur, images of which she had once seen in picture books. She didn't know how you became like this, but your ability really helped you in fights, and the fact that you were physically stronger than ordinary people made the situation even more difficult

Only sometimes did you become allies. This happened when you were united by a common enemy. At such moments, you put off your quarrels and could join forces and it even seemed to the vampire queen that you weren't so bad, but then you started behaving as usual again and she remembered why you weren't friends

She knew that one day you would disappear from her life, because unlike her, you were mortal, so she did not miss the opportunity to create memories related to you. Although you weren't friends, you were also a part of her life that she wouldn't want to forget after many years.

or, rather, there is a notable number of instances in extended adventure time content where marceline broke the fourth wall! i wanted to share a few, but if any of you happen to know of more times when she does this, PLEASE let me know because i am so interested in this weird little trend! it's not as if adventure time is a stranger to ever breaking the fourth wall, but it's very rare and far between, so the number of times they did it with marceline outside of the show is very interesting to me.

the mainline adventure time comics by BOOM! Studios feature at least two instances of marceline breaking the fourth wall, and they appear in the first two issues!

in issue #1 (february 8th 2012), we have this!

Translation: "Hey guys I promise I will show up more next issue - Marceline."

for context, usually the space below the comics have some very faint green text with an observer narrator posting funny quips about whatever is happening on the page. but in this case, they not only made it one of the comic's pigpen ciphers, but also made it one where marceline is speaking directly to the reader! interesting!

in issue #2 (march 14th 2012), it is a lot more direct and obvious without needing to crack any codes!

Quote: "Remember when the Lich was attacking me and my totally sweet house? Remember how instead of helping me out, you turned the page and read about Finn and Jake instead? Well I don't have to remember because he's still attacking me and IT'S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW!!!"

Quote: "What? You didn't help me out AGAIN?! Whose side are you on? Because you could've been on TEAM VAMPIRE QUEEN."

throughout the issue, there were a couple of small, "mini" panels at the bottom of the page where the characters did a small joke. however, these marceline ones were the only ones where the character directly addressed the reader. sadly, marceline doesn't seem to be taking the "that's not how comics work" as an excuse for not helping her... (i'm team vampire queen forever BTW)

explore the dungeon because i don't know (november 15th 2013) also has instances of marceline fourth wall breaking! she can be heard saying "Game logic" in this clip.

as someone who has played this game, i can confirm marceline has a chance to say that whenever she eats food or absorbs red, so i heard it a LOT when i played the game. she's the only character who ever references the game as being a game. this was honestly what made me first think about marceline breaking the fourth wall. i noticed the adventure time wikia page for this game generalizes this trivia by simply saying "marceline mentions being in a video game," which i am not sure whether that is poor documentation or if there could even be a more direct example of this found in the game that i don't remember. either way! fourth wall breaks!

this seems to be a phenomenon that happened around relatively early adventure time. i just know for a fact there are more examples of this out there, but i haven't found them yet and i really wanted to share what i had found so far! this just makes me wonder if there were plans for marceline to be an actual fourth wall breaking character and how that would have affected the show if it crossed over to that, or if it is just a coincidence that two separate places had specifically marceline break the fourth wall. if it was going to be a bigger thing, i am kind of glad that it wasn't since i am really happy with the marceline we have. but it's still really fun to see how she developed both in terms of character growth and how she was written by writers! plus, she's still really funny.

Being a guard for a princess isn't your first career choice but you can't complain if it pays the bills ya know. With the recent party crash that was Princess Day there was a bunch of open job positions at the breakfast kingdom so you sent and application and three days later you were hired and given breakfast themed armor. It's sticky, but atleast it smells nice.

"That cursed Marceline! Ruining my princess day brunch, she has to pay. I'm gonna... I'm gonna-!" Breakfast Princess  paces back and forth as she ponders her little scheme, her angry hands twitching to grab at anything which in this case was a piece of paper and a pen. "I'm gonna write a letter!" She waves it in her hand as if she were holding a weapon.

This unconsciously made you burst into a short chuckle, catching the attention of the princess.

"What's so funny?" She asks you.

Now with her attention on you, you stand up straight and hold your weapon firmly just like you were doing 5 minutes ago as part of your guard duty. "Well your highness, Marceline is the vampire queen, I doubt a letter is gonna make her regret ruining your event."

This makes the princess drop the items in her hand, eyeing you skeptically as she walks up to you with her hands behind her back like an elementary teacher waiting for the answer of a hard question. "And what would you suggest instead my fellow breakfast guard?"

You think about it for a second, raising a hand to your chin. "Well, she sometimes performs at this one bar I like to go. We could ruin her performance there just like how she ruined your princess day?"

Breakfast princess's judgemental eyes eased a bit and changed into something more curious and thoughtful. "I'm listening."

That's how you two end up in a wrecked up bar Breakfast Princess wouldn't be caught dead in, she had to whip up a disguise with sunglasses and a bandana over her head just so no one would recognize her, but she complies if it means getting her revenge. You contain your laughter as she walks alongside you,

guiding her to a booth closest to the stage. You enjoy the change of scenery and eye around the lively place but when you turn back to BP you find her looking around suspiciously as if Marceline would jump out from behind her, you chuckle a bit to yourself.

"You're doing it again." She mutters in your direction.

"Doing what?"

"Laughing at me with my whole revenge thing," she crosses her arms as she looks away kind of upset. "If you think it's ridiculous then you're more than free to go, though don't think you'll be on guard duty to my dorm anytime soon." The princess huffs.

"Sorry about that your highness. I tagged along because I genuinely wanna help, in fact I find it admirable that you wanna get back at Marceline the vampire queen of all people. I've never met her personally but I've heard she's quite scary, so it's interesting you wanna follow through anyways." You admit as casually as if you were discussing the weather but for BP she's left speechless for a second, looking away once more as her judgemental expression fades away.

She tries to hide it by grabbing the menu on the table and rasing it up to cover her face. "Might as order something since we're here." She notes, keeping her expectations low since she doubts a rowdy place like this has anything that might suit her frivolous taste.

"Good idea!"

After a few minutes a waitress arrives to your guy's table and prepares her notepad. While you order something simple there's Breakfast Princess who lowers the menu and asks "I'll have a water nymph draped in mint leaves with a dash of blueberry extract, on the rocks."

The waitress gives her a look at the request. "We have fruit punch and strawberry soda."

"What? There's no way I'll settle for a typical soda!" The disgust on Breakfast Princess's usually glossy lips is evident even in the dim lighting, you tense up as you can sense BP is ready to make further demands (like the ones she does back at her castle) but before she can start demanding something above the waitress's paycheck you immediately step in with a different solution. "Do you have blueberry juice and mineral water?" You ask to which the waitress nods. "How does berry juice in mineral sound BP...? I mean, Your highness."

Breakfast Princess reconsiders the option present and nods in agreement. "Very well, I'll have the berry juice."

Once the waitress leaves you're left with Breakfast Princess and her angry glare from under her sunglasses. You can feel yourself sinking into your seat as if it would help you hide from her. "I uh. Sorry about that, butting in I mean."

BP sighs and rests her head on her open palm, leaning sideways to look at the rest of the bar. "No, you did fine. I'm just kinda mad at how much I wouldn't be able to handle myself here with the common folk without you." She admits which was more than you were expecting.

"You'll get the hang of it, atleast until Marceline shows up." You try and lighten her mood.

Sure you were also half expecting to get ripped to shreds by a vampire but besides that Breakfast Princess's company wasn't the worst person to be around, the two of you had some chit chat here and there about either the bar or things going down at the castle. BP was casually sipping on her mineral water not too long into the conversation, and by the time the stage microphone started picking up she almost choked on her drink when she saw Marceline testing the microphone by tapping on it with her finger. "Hey is this thing on-?"

Breakfast Princess goes back and forth looking at Marceline and then to you, despite her big talk from earlier she's actually panicking a bit now that her target is right in front of her.

Satisfied with the microphone, Marceline adjusts  her hold on her guitar. "Anyways here's a song I wrote about my- argh, what is this? who threw that!?" She was interrupted by someone throwing their drink at her, it was too dark to make out who it was in the audience but she can make out the smell of berries.

Meanwhile you and Breakfast Princess made it out of there with all your limbs intact, rushing through the back doors as the two of you laugh together into the night.
