Nerikomi (練り込み , lit. "kneading") is a contemporary Japanese term of the artistic technique for creating pottery agateware. Often referred to as “neriage”, nerikomi is a decorative process that involves stacking colored clays and then slicing through the cross section to reveal a pattern, which can then be used as an applied decoration. Nerikomi designs provide a wonderful way to work three dimensionally with patterns and images. The results reflect a combination of both careful planning and accidental surprise, plus it’s exciting work for those who love patterns and are drawn to the wet-clay stage of pottery making.’ Although marbling ceramic techniques were used in Egypt and China and through the Romans to the West, in Japan there was an explosion of it from about 1978–1995. There are a few pieces from the Momoyama period, and Edo period, as well as Mingei. https://ceramicartsnetwork.org/daily/ceramic-supplies/ceramic-colorants/creating-neriage-blocks-decorating-with-colored-clay-patterns/
