Reblog with your favorite "cinematic" novel: the one where you can see every scene play out in your head with perfect clarity and rhythm, and you know if they ever filmed it, it could never measure up to the version you've imagined.

@incoramsanctissimo and @paranormaljones - you both put Mara Daughter of the Nile in the tags of that lapis lazuli post and I wanted to say I Loved that book and first read it for school too! (MODG curriculum) I didn't think of it as a well known book so it surprised me to see it referenced twice on my dash at the same time!
#Idk if u guys know each other but i just thought it was really cool#we should start the mara daughter of the nile fandom adjlfsafj#and invite coldswarkids she loves it too

An ending tag/extra scene for a little angst and hurt/comfort. As the fandom tropes go.
Summary: It was difficult to accept that the brightness of Mara’s eyes as she gazed at him in the litter, her triumphant grin as she spoke of soon being his countess-wife, had fled beneath the beating wings of truth. Gods above, here was truth: grievous wounds were not erased by the changing of one ruler for another. In the dazzling throne-room, in the Street of the Sycamores, Sheftu had plucked hope like a flower, even while he should have heeded its thorn.

Sheftu is one of those rare true ruthless protagonists because even when he's in love with Mara there's absolutely 0 doubt whatsoever that if he found out she was a traitor to his king he would have her killed

Sheftu snorted a quiet laugh, then caught himself, shooting a surreptitious glance towards Snape. Thutmose didn't look up, but the corner of his mouth twitched upwards in solidarity.
A wave of heat flooded Mara's face. If Sheftu's brashness exposed them... but the look in Thutmose's eyes told her they were in this together. No matter the house colors, their ties went deeper.
Nahereh, of course, had already achieved a perfect, pearlescent swirl in his cauldron. He sneered across the room. "Incompetence in those gold and red cloaks, as usual," he muttered.

I was an early bloomer--eleven for me.
Nobody understands the bond between a girl and the mediocre book she read when she was 13 years old.

last song listened to: I'm in SUCH a music rut right now, and sick of all my spotify recs, but my cousin sent me Last Night (Beer Fear) by Lucy Spraggan, and it's an absolute bop.
currently reading: Mara: Daughter of the Nile which I loved in fifth grade and am seeing if it holds up. So far....kind of...but oh boy was this a book set in ancient Egypt written by a white lady in 1953. Vaguely alarming how little my taste in romance have changed lol. Also Harrow the Ninth, after @overnighttosunflowers and @lurkinglurkerwholurks and another friend badgered me about it aggressively for years. they were right, it is a masterpieces. I deeply apologize for showing up so late to the locked tomb party. I pray it never opens. (spoiler: o wait, it kinda did...)
currently watching: we're barreling through our CR backlog right now, and it feels great to actually watch the episodes we're on finally move up in number. I've also watched an obscene about of costume dramas in the last couple of weeks, including P&P (2005) which (in my controversial opinion) is mid overall but the pining is 10/10, Jane Eyre (2011?), and Sense & Sensibility (1995?).... @rhytons will have me rewatching Phantom Thread sooner rather than later, but I might to Emma. (2020) again first or actually get myself to the theater for The Taste of Things.
currently obsessed with: not really anything and I need to brainrot something, plz send recs. Closest is probably HtN, but I read slowly.

I need to finish my fic. I just really prefer heroines who do things rather than have things happen to them, even if their actions turn out to be a mistake. Reading some books recently in which Stuff Happens to the heroines and I'm just bored and frustrated.
My favorite Heroines Who Do Things include: Jude Duarte from Folk of the Air, Mara from Daughter of the Nile, Donata from Daughter of Venice, Vasya Petrovna from The Winternight Trilogy, and Agnieszka from Uprooted. Any recommendations along those lines are welcome!

Two, three, and 24 for the book asks?
2. Did you reread anything? What?
i actually didn’t! I like to read Daddy-Long-Legs almost every year, but this year I took a break. I still may end up reading it, however 👀 I also am in the middle of The Penderwicks on Gardam Street but i haven’t finished it yet, so once I do I’ll have reread that one!
also I’ve been desperate to read Spinning Silver again because that is such a winter book to me
3 What were your top five books of the year?
Valiant by Sarah McGuire, Entwined by Heather Dixon Wallwork, Seven Daughters and Seven Sons by Barbara Cohen, Mara: Daughter of the Nile by Eloise Jarvis McGraw, The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale, and I can’t leave out Betsy, Tacy and Tib by Maud Hart Lovelace
i enjoyed all of those very much, they made my year better!
24. Did you DNF anything? Why?
I didn’t finish because i knew it would take a long time to finish and I didn’t want to juggle it and multiple other works at the same time, but War and Peace. I LOVE Leo Tolstoy and this year seemed turbulent so I really wanted to savor it

Evelyn's Art Bracket Semifinals: Poll 1
Star Crossed vs. Mara, Daughter of the Nile 2
Propaganda:
This is a fanart for an obscure book published in 1953 called Mara, Daughter of the Nile.
A redraw of a pic that I originally made in middle school. A personal favorite of mine. My art professor stared at it for a long time and told me it made him think a lot. He asked me what it means but I wouldn’t tell him. Partly inspired by this song. (x)

actually making a seperate post for hogwarts!au mara daughter of the nile :
pre-end of the novel:
everyone ought to be in slytherin, everyone! but due to sorting hat shenanigans, mara / nahereh end up in slytherin and sheftu / thutmose in gryffindor
everyone’s confused how they ended up from 1400 bce thebes, egypt to 2010s hugeass castle in the middle of the scottish highlands, in a place and country so far beyond punt that they never thought existed. probably the will of the gods, idk.
since this is pre-end of the novel, mara’s thrilled ( and a bit peeved) that she doesn’t have to act as messenger / go between for sheftu and thutmose anymore considering they sit together in class, also lunch and dinner and breakfast, plotting and shooting dark looks in nahereh’s direction. she misses menfe’s sweet cakes and inanni, although she wouldn’t admit that fact to herself
& for some reason, she’s especially keen not to let nahereh and sheftu be in the same room. for some reason. 🫠
thutmose wisely keeps his thoughts to himself.
post-end of the novel:
mara is still recovering from her whipping. that doesn’t stop her from trying to sneak into the hogwarts library, esp. the restricted section. in the end, she had to be restrained, with rope (that she broke free from, untying knots discreetly is a useful skill!) and lastly with a sticking charm.
the sticking charm was sheftu’s idea. mara doesn’t talk to him for several weeks. it’s thutmose who has to transmit messages between them now.
nahereh died at the end of the book but appears in hogwarts, so everyone thinks that this place is the afterlife. much existential angst.
nahereh tries to seek a royal pardon by creating healing potions for mara. it would work if she hadn’t resisted all attempts to drink it, the damn fool.
