Black characters that are more than their trauma and oppression. More than what our own society says Black people are. Real representation even if it’s in an alternate universe.

Black people have never been as worthless as we’ve been told we were. Seeing Black characters be voiced by incredibly talented Black people in a massive show like Arcane will always make me feel proud 🫶🏾

seraphine is (one of) my redemption durge and she's a drow college of lore bard who i have romancing astarion. i said specifically that i wanted to talk about the way that she and astarion are mutually (and, in some cases, not-so-secretly) using each other in their act 1 romance, but to make that make sense, i'll have to explain a little bit about her.

one of the things that (as her player) sets her apart from my other tav/durge runs is that seraphine is really rather pragmatic (and a little ruthless) in her approach to handling problems. she gets off the nautiloid and knows only two things about herself: that she has an illithid tadpole in her head and that she has violent and inexplicable urges. whereas juno (my other redemption durge) immediately responds to her dark urges with revulsion, seraphine compartmentalizes that shit until act 3 (thereafter she handles it so badly she tries (and fails) to break up with astarion). it's not that she likes the urges (and she certainly doesn't like that she has these seemingly external forces trying to make her do things she does not want to do - if she's going to murder her way across the sword coast, it should be because she wants to do it, not some unwanted urge), it's just that she has bigger problems that require more attention than fretting over if she's a bad person. specifically: 1) not becoming a mindflayer, 2) not slaughtering her way through the countryside uncontrollably, and 2.5) in case she does slaughter her way through the countryside, finding a way to make sure her newfound allies with an unfortunate amount of morals do not kill her for it.

see, seraphine recognizes that power doesn't just come from who has the most money or political pull or even physical power. there is power in being liked, and there's power in being owed. and the way she sees it is that, if she fails to resist her urges and does kill someone, if she's built up goodwill with her companions who like her and feel like they owe her for helping each of them with their personal troubles and being an all-around-good person (helping the tieflings in the grove, etc.), they will be more likely to forgive and ignore her own issues (and, to her credit, this does work: she gets caught after she kills alfira and, while they disapprove, no one tries to kick her out of camp or kill her. she just gets the verbal equivalent of a slap on the wrist).

so when astarion approaches her and starts flirting with her and suggests they have a sexual relationship, between him coming on way too strong and the fact that she's actively endearing herself to everyone else in the camp using similar tactics, she can easily spot his attempts to manipulate her. at this point in the game, she's figured out what will make the other companions like her, but she's only just figured out how to handle the issue of astarion (in her playthrough, he propositioned her immediately after handling the gur hunter in the swamp, which is the introduction of the cazador-is-looking-for-astarion plotline). and when astarion propositions her, she realizes that she doesn't need to figure out how to get astarion to like her, or how to make him feel like he owes her. he's handed her on a silver platter a way to manipulate him into needing her, such that he will tie his own fate and his own safety to hers (and, if she goes down, he loses his protector, so he better be inclined to prevent her from going down if need be).

i think it's important to mention that seraphine does actually like astarion (because i definitely just made it sound like she doesn't). they're not super close at this point, but she genuinely enjoys his company. he sees the world in a similar way (not perfectly similarly - she wants to shake sense into him when he disapproves of helping people because she's playing the longest con of her life and he's not getting with her program), at least in terms of wanting power (so that he can have freedom). she also finds him funny and she gets his sense of humor. one of my favourite moments in the earlier stages of their relationship is when astarion runs pickup lines past her and she's having a grand old time giggling like a schoolgirl at the melodrama of it all. so she's using him, but she does also like him. just as he's using her, but (in time) comes to like her too.

(an odd note, as well, that doesn't really fit into this but is tangentially related: seraphine starts helping with the companion's personal quests because she needs them to like her and, over time, helps them because she grows to like them as people. but it always feels like she is helping them with their problems. but with astarion, freeing him from cazador always felt like their problem together. it was something she felt actively and equally involved in, even from the start, even if she didn't understand it. in fact, in astarion's act 2 romance scene where he tells you that he has real feelings for you, seraphine realized in that exact conversation that she had real feelings for him too, and all of her behaviour very quickly made sense.)

so it's in this fashion that seraphine and astarion are both using each other in act 1 (and into parts of act 2). seraphine fully knows that she is trying to manipulate him and that he's trying to manipulate her. astarion, on the other hand, doesn't. (i think that, as a character, he would be socially savvy enough to put together what was going on, but the game itself doesn't seem to anticipate that players might take this approach to his romance. i think that's why, in astarion's act 2 romance scene, you have the option to get mad at him for "revealing" that he began your relationship with the intent to manipulate you, but have no option to tell him that you were manipulating him too. so canonically, astarion didn't know that seraphine had figured out his game. i headcanon that she does eventually tell him this - maybe in act 3?).

of course, as their romance progresses their feelings for each other change and the manipulation tactics disappear and they're just two people who love and care for each other deeply. as i get closer to the end of act 3 in seraphine's playthrough the more i am convinced that they become strangely domestic post-game.

Been playing Force Unleashed on Switch lately and it is not as good as the HD version by a massive mile. Sure it does have more levels, but it still repeats the same levels as the HD version and you go to the Jedi Temple over and over.

It is a fun game imo, like if back then you only had a PS2 or a Wii it might have been worth it to get ,but today it isn't worth it as you can get the Ultimate Sith Edition on Steam and that is a far better experience imo.

I do like that you get some new boss battles and that Maris Brood doesn't die in this version.

Too bad it doesn't have the trophy room on the Wookie Planet like the HD version where you can see Jar Jar Binks.

I hope the game has some form of new game + like the HD version where after you finish the game you can just go back through any of the previous levels to find the datacrons and various lightsaber customization options

Update I now finished the game, it does have a New Game + mode, but it just has your play though all the levels in order over and over.

I did type the cheats in after finishing the game to unlock all the characters, costumes, and all the force abilities.

If I were to play through the game again I guess finding all the holacrons and lightsaber colors and hilts would be what to go for, but otherwise I don't really find it worth it to play though all over again.

At least the Death Star isn't as long as the HD version, it does feature the 2 endings and that is all nice, but the game still is vastly inferior to the HD version

OG Obey Me x MC ( Mara ) - First Year of Devildom Part 2

It was another day trapped in the Devildom. Since that incident, Mara was confined to her room and despite having Mammon's pact, she refused to use him still feeling resentful. This was entirely his fault. What the hell was she supposed to do? Run like a coward? Plead for his help? He abandoned her and if he was going to fail her she wanted nothing to do with him. She refused him. The pact was so he wouldn't kill her. Nothing more. Mara paced around her room, the feeling of "Cabin Fever" setting in as she groaned in displeasure. What to do… What to do… Mara sat at her vanity, putting that black lipstick on as she glared at her reflection. This was just like back in high school. Back when she was fifteen. She could see the younger her glaring at her, trapped in a room she hated, at a school she despised, with people she abhorred. She hated it here.

She was quiet as she stared at the mirror thinking of that time.

The drive to Oakington Academy was slow and full of tension. A young girl with curly pigtails stared out the window with a frown, holding her pet tarantula, Juno's, cage in her lap.

"Mara… Please… Can't we talk?" Her father asked, glancing in the rearview mirror at his daughter. Mara didn't say anything, only closing her eyes. "How did she do it? What did she do? Was dad really choosing her over me?" were the thoughts that hung like a fog in her head. When mom left, it was just the two of them, and her father always dropped everything for her. He'd read to her, buy her whatever she wanted, they'd go everywhere together. But it was only ever when he had time for her. Between his job and many girlfriends, being with Mara was more like a requirement than anything else.

"Mara, your father is talking to you." This latest wife said, the twenty-two year old college student said, the communications major looking back at her as Mara glared at her. She hated every new step mother her father brought in; He always married these girls, and then when they got too old, discarded them for someone else. She hated it but this one was no different; Olivia Launceston, Holly Hudson, Evie Rogers, Yvette Manson… All girls who fell for her father, took his attention away, then were discarded by him or chased away by her and this one would be no different. Mara was sure of it. Even if this behavior led her to be labeled as a delinquent.

Delinquent. Troublemaker, bad kid, aggressor, hell-raiser, bully. Those were the words used to describe her by teachers and adults who couldn't give a damn about who she really was. They made her so angry. So, so angry… She wanted to just beat them black and blue, beat them, and the other kids who'd dare try to pick on her too.  All of it made her so angry…

"I'm sorry, are you talking to me? I'm not interested in joining a sorority." She said coldly, scrunching her nose at the young woman as she glared at her.

"Mara, I told you. Please be nice to your new stepmother. Cindy is a part of this family now." Her father said sternly, causing Mara's glare to deepen. She never understood the point of faking this "family feeling." Her father always left these women when they reached thirty, she wasn't even permanent. "Fine, I can play nice; so Cindy, since you're only six years older than me, want me to loan you some of my clothes and makeup for the frat party?" Mara asked, grinning maliciously as Cindy gasped

"Mara!" Her father started but was cut off as Mara continued grinning as she relished every harsh word she spoke. "Or how about we skip the study group at the frat party, and you can use it for when you're lying on your back for a passing grade."

Cindy was furious as she turned back to Mara. "You have no right to speak to me that way! There is a level of respect that you-"

"Ohhh, we're talking about respect now? Well, why don't you go find your self-respect and date someone your own age, huh?"

"That's enough! I've had it with your attitude, young lady! I can't understand why you're like this, but if you can't say anything nice, then stay quiet until we get to your school!" Her father now yelled at her, causing Mara to flinch and look down. Her father never yelled at her like that… Not before. He used to like whenever she'd mock others. He used to like Juno, too. It all used to be a game for them to get fruit smoothies at the mall, people watch, and joke about others or scare people off with her spider. But now, with every new wife, he wanted to pretend Mara was just problematic? Why did he always want to pretend with each new wife? Want her to pretend? Anger, hurt, envy, and confusion brewed under her stoic expression as she stared out the window. She would cry or scream alone. She won't give them the satisfaction of seeing her upset.

The school soon came to view as her father now spoke up in a calmer tone. "Here we are dear, Oakington Academy. A year here will help you in the long run, I promise." He said as Cindy grinned, relishing in the fact she was going to a disciplinary school.

"And…. I love you, Mara." She heard her father say as she grabbed her luggage, getting out of the car. Mara didn't even look at her father, just mumbling a quiet "Whatever" as she slammed the car door, turning towards the school. She could feel him still looking at her, but she didn't look at him. How could he say he loved her when he was leaving her here?

The car drove off, and Mara turned back to watch it, a pang of sadness hitting her as it disappeared into the horizon. Did he really leave her? Did he really not want her around that badly? She knows she's been a bitch but Dad always had her back, she didn't need friends when she had her dad by her side… Is he really not going to come back? Is he really choosing that girl over her again? Well he usually left these girls after they reached thirty so it wouldn't be that long… But why did he always choose them over her during this?

Why was she always the silver medal in his life?

Mara put the cap on her lipstick back as she frowned. She hadn't spoken to her dad in a long while. She hasn't even spoken to her half siblings in a while… But now she was here. She was alone… And even if she was the silver medal or just a passing thought in their lives she missed them. Now it was like history was repeating. She was far from her family, going to a school she hated, and alone again. She felt so bitter.

Suddenly, there was a knock on the door as her thoughts were washed away.

"Oi human you sent for me?" A rough voice called through the door, irritation laced in his tone. Mammon…. At least the idiot came this time. Mara had to get her mind off home.
