Jeanette MacDonald:
"The reigning queen soprano of the 1930's, Jeanette had a long career that started in the pre-code era (where she was dubbed The Lingerie Queen because she always wore skimpy underwear), and late made nine films with baritone Nelson Eddy. The two were incredibly popular and were dubbed "King and Queen of the Movies" and popularized songs like "Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life", "Will You Remember" and "I'm Falling in Love with Someone"." - @mygreatadventurehasbegun

I'm still stuck on writers block for the last of the Flufftober prompts, but the other two events I was working on (AI-less Whumptober and Angstober) I finished while trying to get out of the writers block. So after hemming and hawing about it, I'll just post all those, finish fixing the masterlists, then it'll just be Flufftober left.
I also started both a scene for "Belonging to Nightmares" and reading a book called "Beyond the Red Veil" by Mara Fitzgerald. The latter of which was a random pick at the library (any time I put a book on hold, I'll also go into the shelves when I have time and pick up something random that looks interesting) and is actually pretty whump-y so far, which was a nice surprise. Once I finish typing up the prompts I have written and fix those masterlists, I'll be reading again, lol.
And I'm debating pulling the assassin's angle for "Belonging to Nightmares." It just isn't working whenever I try to put it in. It'll most likely get moved to some other idea.

Anyways, here's the books I read last year (that weren't manga or cookbooks)-
The Beautiful and Damned, F. Scott Fitzgerald
Sister, Kjell Ola Dahl (#......like 7 or 8 in the Oslo Detective series)
American Prometheus (Oppenheimer biography), Kai Bird
Matilda, Roald Dahl
Blackmail and Bibingka, Mia P. Manansala (#3 in Tita Rosie's Kitchen)
Homicide and Halo-Halo, Mia P. Manansala (#2 in Tita Rosie's Kitchen)
The Moving Finger (Miss Marple #4), Agatha Christie
The Love Hypothesis, Ali Hazelwood
Ymir, Rich Larson
I'm not sure how to put these in an order of what I liked the most because I read them for different reasons so I'll just do a drive by:
Ymir - Started with the pedal to the floorboards and did not let up one bit. One of my favorite flavors of sci-fi is when the narrative is unabashedly About Somewhere Else. Loved how the protagonist could not move through the story without somehow cutting everyone around him, and I loved the traumatic, unresolved tension between him and his brother. Probably my favorite book by vibes alone
Sister - I adore the Oslo Detective series, for reasons that possibly scratch my brain and my brain alone. It's so dry and uninterested in selling you melodrama. I want to study the way this guy writes his interview scenes; they are the main way the detective work gets done and they work so fluidly. They never slow down the pace to make sure you're keeping up. This was a particularly fun installment, seeing one of the lead two detectives on his own doing PI work after having quit, although the cases took brutal turns.
The Moving Finger - Loved it. Love how AC is just out there inventing characters whole cloth that you'll never meet again, but as soon as you meet them you're like 'oh, wow, you're not just a character you're like a full ass person.' I loved this installment in particularly because the dynamics between the characters were just so fascinating?? Once again, I've yet to correctly guess an AC mystery. Better luck next time.
Matilda - read it for a fic I am writing. Spent most of it getting big feelings and marveling at how completely fucking accurate the live action Mara Wilson movie was. Like there were entire scenes where I was like 'this is the movie, this is exactly what happened in the fucking movie.' Great book, but also wow that movie was a wonderfully accurate adaptation.
American Prometheus - Two things I like in a biography: research and calling out when the research didn't yield anything and/or yielded contradictory records. While I struggled to get through the political back half, particularly the bits leading up to the trial, this book was an interesting look on the development of scientific ethics in the twentieth century and on how today's scientific community today is still shaped by the political machinations of the past.
Both of the Tita Rosie's Kitchen books - it's a food-themed setting for a murder mystery book (which is like it's own genre now, which is cool). Relatively easy read. I think the author is still growing into herself, but one thing that she does well is mystery-plotting. Another thing is food descriptions.
The Love Hypothesis - Mainly read it because I owned a copy. It was... probably more enjoyable for people who like romance. Given that it is a romance book. But I do try to read a bit of everything, because I think each genre has something to bring to the table story-wise. This one had some very nice getting-to-know-you moments between the characters, who had good chemistry, but I think where it was weakest was in giving similar moments to the side characters, who often felt one dimensional. The story beats about feminism and institutional unfairness could've been less heavy-handed. For something that was relevant to the plot, it often felt like the author knew they were supposed to say something about it but couldn't figure out how to say it in a way that hadn't been parroted before, which is a shame because the scenes where the protagonist actually had to deal with those issues played well.

not me going through my gr list naming all my faves with less than 5000 ratings,
Firebreak by Nicole Kornher-Stace only has 2900 ratings which is a SHAME, people are afraid of being hurt I guess (it's prequel, Flight & Anchor, only has 130 ratings and I am crying about it)
The Scourge Between Stars by Ness Brown was a delightfully sad bitesized story in space. Not going to say more. Don't open the door. (3700 ratings)
I read Beyond the Ruby Veil by Mara Fitzgerald while waiting for and recovering from surgery and omg. It's so stupid. It's so fun. Weird take on vampires, don't think hard about the world building just go with it. These people are all disasters. (1900 ratings)
The Bone Maker by Sarah Beth Durst only has 2900 ratings and now my favorite character poll makes more sense yall just don't know who Kreya IS, to which I ask you, what's stopping you?
The Wolf of Oren Yaro only has 3400 ratings?? are people scared of long books? It's okay, it won't bite you. (it will bite you) I know you, Panda, have read it, but to everyone else, NEW FUN TAKE ON DRAGON RIDERS IN BOOK 3!
okay I'll admit, I thought Amberlough by Lara Elena Donnelly was Fine. Three stars. But I am surprised it wasn't a bigger hit on tumblr? Queer, spies, roarin 20s, like why wasnt the Penumbra Podcast fandom all over this lol
i will stop there but honorable mention to Mask of Mirrors which does have more than 5000 ratings but book two does NOT so im counting it I want more people to know who Ren and Grey and Vargo and Mr Peabody are :(
What's your favorite niche SFF book? Something that doesn't have a fandom, but still matters a lot to you? (Lets say, less than 5000 ratings on GR?)

Hey do u take requests? If u do can u pls suggest some books with lovable villains? And any villain/hero if u can pls
I feel like both "villain" and "lovable" are terms with big spectrums and personal biases attached them, but these are a few I think work!
We Could Be Heroes by Mike Chen is about an actual supervillain with amnesia, and no memory of his life before or how he got powers, becoming unlikely allies and best friends with the local superhero who's apparently in the same exact situation. He's a sweetheart of a character, and their platonic relationship is perfect.
Vicious by VE Schwab has a "villain" as a main character, someone who is very much okay with intimidation, threats, and murder. He's interesting, and the lesser of two evils, though definitely still a dark character.
The Dark Tide by Alicia Jasinska might be cheating just a bit, because I don't know if Eva counts as a villain, but she is queen of a race of people who drown the locals every few years. This is an enemies to lovers between a cold, distant girl Queen and a plucky, cynical ballerina who's meant to be this year's sacrifice.
Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth is also a bit iffy on the villain aspect. The romance here is between the hero and a universally feared girl on the wrong side of oppression, but the main villains are also super interesting in their own right.
Night Shine by Tessa Graton's main antagonist is super interesting, and there is a romance between her and the main character.
Beyond the Black Door by A.M. Strickland really tests the boundaries for "lovable", but I know he's some people's type. There is a central romance involving him.
The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller is a dark fantasy romance starring two villain types. Both the MC is morally gray/dark, and the love interest is definitely lovable but also objectively terrible.
Beyond the Ruby Veil by Mara Fitzgerald stars yet another terrible main character who is, without a doubt, a villain- but so much fun to watch. I don't know if she's "lovable", but I love her. She's in the middle of an enemies to lovers romance, and the sequel comes out early next year.

“ I have something I believe in, too. I believe in myself. I believe that I can change things no one else has ever been able to change, and do things no one else has ever been able to do. I don’t care if people love me, or if they think what I do is good. But rest assured, they’re going to know I was here.”
