Ch198, Cover art flower language

@jack-littlecrow asks on this post what Sebastian's carrying in the cover art.

First off, Finny is carrying that decent-sized fir tree around like it's nothing, as expected of him. Germanic peoples were decorating such trees for Winter Solstice long before it became a Christmas tradition. To Pagans, such trees decorated with lights meant light after the dark, everlasting life, as well as fertility. To Christians, the decorated tree, particularly with lights, is symbolic of Jesus being a light in the dark world. It's also seen as a symbol of the Tree of Life in Eden.

All the Christians had to do was ascribe that light in the dark to Jesus and make the everlasting life part of it harken back to the Book of Genesis.

What Sebastian is carrying was also used in an ancient Pagan tradition before it became a staple of Victorian winter-time decorations. It's not as popular now as the trees still are, but you will still see references to them, and some people still bring real or fake ones into their homes. It's also a type of evergreen, but of a very different nature.

Mistletoe.

In Victorian and other western flower languages, mistletoe is given meanings like these: love/romance, friendship, life/vitality, survival during hardship, wisdom, and even fertility.

Hanakotoba, or Japanese flower language, gives similar meanings about love/romance and surmounting difficulties.

As a contracted demon, Sebastian is all about surmounting difficulties for his young master. And by this time, our earl's mere existence is a testament to survival during hardship.

But also keep in mind that mistletoe is a poisonous and parasitic plant.

So, the mistletoe emphasizes that Sebastian surmounts difficulties and provides our earl with continued survival during hardship... but he's essentially poison and a parasite.

Note from Yana Toboso about Ciel outfit: Draft of the clothing for the cover. Ciel’s clothes are often limited to one time only, so I adjusted them as I drew them, so this is really a draft. This time, the theme was “Clothes that look like oysters if you look at them from a distance”. I tried to express the striped pattern of a seashell with pleated frills, but readers couldn’t see it.

Hard to tell what's going on, exactly, but I'm guessing they start their jobs in ch198... and that's Snake's uniform?

At least they share a room together, so they can talk a bit more freely about their situation there. Finny definitely seems to realize, in ch197, that Ginny is probably in danger because of her "fledging" day.

that feeling when you're in the middle of moving house and you barely even check whatsapp because you're too braindead and tired from being an adult™️ and then you get an email notifying you that some minor who hasn't realized that when their birthday comes they'll vote in the elections (or be eligible to anyway) and therefore is almost an adult leaving some absolutely nonsensical answer to a post from like three years ago and then tumblr doesn't even let me reply because for some reason the answer won't show on my dash (did the algorythm think it was too hostile? idk but lol)

kid I can't possibly muster up the brain power to actually cp that stupid email after I spent the entire day boxing stuff up but if you're reading here: fictional stuff in general is not about you, you don't even know wtf victim blaming means because if I say a 17yo as almost an adult can generally fuck most people they like especially if it's a fling I'm not blaming them for anything except having fun, I don't even know you and no one says *you* have to date anyone above your age if you don't want to like sorry you're not the main character in the universe's existence

also at 17yo I'd have found the idea of dating anyone below 16yo absolutely unacceptable because they all looked like immature kids to me and I'd have found nothing wrong with fooling around with someone a few years older, am I victim blaming 17yo me now?

Mar 17 - remembered to wear green today, woo. Took out the bins of recyclables as brother hadn’t done that when he left for work at stupid o’clock. On my way back in I stopped long enough to shovel the porch and stairs of some very wet and heavy snow (thankfully no great depth of it) - it was so warm I didn’t even bother going back in to grab a coat first, the sweater I had on was more than good enough. Baked a loaf of oatmeal bread, and a pan of pumpkin-walnut quick bread. Brought recycling bins back in.

For supper I made burgers (with the buns I baked a few days ago) and a salad of cucumber, sweet red pepper, tomato, celery, red onion, and green olives dressed with mayonnaise thinned with some sun-dried tomato dressing. Also got a head start on supper for tomorrow and have some boneless skinless chicken thighs cut in strips and marinating in tandoori paste mixed with sour cream (in place of yogurt).

Gong to go to bed early methinks, may still be up for a while reading but I have a lot of laundry to get started on tomorrow (still no sign of the new sheet set, but there’s everything else of the new bedding to wash before using, plus weekly laundry).
