There are SO many negative nancys this season. Y’all need to cut it out. You’ve gotten so entitled.

“This was a bad wildcard” I don’t know how old you are, but I was in 3rd grade when I was taught how to give constructive criticism, and I was way younger when I learned that most people don’t like receiving unsolicited criticism. All of the players have loved the challenge of each of the wild cards. They have loved staying on their toes. If they genuinely hated it, they would have said something. Changes would be made. If it’s not interesting to you, then you can stay quiet and leave. You’ve gotten way too comfortable disrespecting people from behind a screen.

“The teams are unoriginal” Making sure that the players are having a good time is among the top priorities of this series. They are naturally going to link up with people they’re comfortable with. If you have a problem with that, then maybe you need to be put in a room with your best friends and some people you kind of know and be criticized when you gravitate towards your best friends. I don’t understand why you all are having such a problem with the concept of seeking comfort in a scary and unpredictable environment.

“Pearl shouldn’t be on a team with Cleo and Scott” well, she made her choice, didn’t she. That’s not up to you. She is an adult. She can choose who she hangs out with. Cleo and Pearl have not had significantly more of a rivalry than any other two players on the server. It seems like you’re just paying more attention to them because they’re women. Don’t try to take away from Pearl’s autonomy. Don’t try to conduct who she hangs out with. It’s really fucked up, what happened to Grian and Scar. Don’t let it happen again. Additionally, Pearl doesn’t care if you don’t think her character should be getting along with Cleo and Scott. The lore is made to fit the events of the server, and never the other way around. If you’re not creative enough to come up with a lore-reason for Pearl, Cleo, and Scott to be getting along, then I really don’t know how you’re still alive.

“Scott’s going to kill Pearl” why. Why would he do that. What record do you have of Scott betraying Pearl for no reason. The only reason he didn’t want to accept her as his ally in Double Life was because he just teamed with her in Last Life, and you all have proven just how much you’re gonna whine about a repetitive team. What history does Scott have of killing his own teammates. The biggest concern on that team is Impulse, who is notorious for holding grudges and betraying alliances. And yet your focus is on the catty two who are loyal to the core. Does that not sound like stereotyping to you? Do you even watch their perspectives? Cause you don’t act like you do.

It is a legitimate miracle that Grian is giving us another season. Be grateful, or we’re not getting another. You try coming up with balanced ideas that will last 6-8 episodes with ~15 people. See how many you come up with.

On tokens, markets, and a path to a real-time economy

Two years ago on March 1, 2019, I posted a Letter to my future self to the Bitcoin blockchain. This is the story of that letter, one where I didn’t write a word, and how two years later, the dream is still alive. There is an actual path with tokens and markets to make utopia a reality, and my case for what that might look like. 



About a month prior to March 1, 2019, I had privately begun telling my close friends, colleagues, and family that I was going to be making a significant career and life change and dedicate the next chapter of my career towards building exclusively for the Bitcoin SV blockchain. You can guess the confused looks and concerns people had about what it was I was doing. Did I lose my mind? To be fair, I still get those messages today. I knew what I had envisioned when I first read the white paper back in 2013 and somewhere along that journey, the crypto industry had taken a path that veered dramatically from the one I had imagined. With Bitcoin having course corrected twice already via hard forks, I wanted and needed a guiding compass - a North Star. That’s when I had the idea to write a letter to my future self.

I confided in one of my best friends, Jackie to help me write it. It was a busy month for me, my mind was all over the place and I needed help. Over two afternoons, I shared with Jackie what I wanted to say, what was the possible world that I imagined. To her I must have been repeating myself since she and many of my friends had heard this for a decade. The future would bring Proof of Work from a term to describe a computer science thing to one that would describe the workings of the entire global economy and drive a seismic shift in how value was created and how we humans would interact and cooperate with one another. I wanted her to include a thank you to some people who helped me along the way - titans of the industry whom I was fortunate to cross paths and work with. Jesse Powell, gave me my first job at Kraken. CZ hired me to OKCoin in 2014. Star believed in me and gave me so many growth opportunities. At Circle, I worked with my long time friend Dan, who would go on to create CMS. A few days later, Jackie sent me a draft. I was pretty shocked at first, thinking hey this doesn’t even say Bitcoin in it. Where are all the names I wanted to include. Then I read it another time and when she asked if I wanted any changes or if the approach was right, I said, “Let’s not change a single word”. It was different, it was exceptional, to me it was perfect. I sent the letter internally as part of my Circle resignation email, flew off to San Antonio with my parents to watch the retirement ceremony of my favourite basketball player Manu Ginobili, and then a month later on April Fools Day, RelayX was launched.

Having this Letter out there has served me well. Nobody could have expected the course of events of the past two years both within BitCoin, and the world at large. Politics, COVID-19, money-printing, delistings, court cases, you name it. Without it as an anchor, I might have lost sight of the bigger picture. If you would have asked me then what BitCoin would look like today, I would have predicted a 100x rosier picture than the current situation. Despite most of the boom in the cryptocurrency industry having not occurred on the Bitcoin SV blockchain, the rapid adoption of blockchain and digital currencies from NFTs to DeFi, to institutions putting BTC on the balance sheet shows the underlying movement is in full force. Just this week, I watched sharpshooter JJ Redick utter the words “non fungible token, and blockchain technology” on his podcast talking about NBA Topshot. That’s incredible.

In the letter are the words - “Your world will be frictionless and marked by truth, freedom and fairness. Your world will truly be one that is defined by human imagination and honest work.”

I am making the case for tokens as the critical solution to a real-time economy. I want to break the spell of the narrow definition of tokens that has bounded the Bitcoin SV ecosystem. For much of the past two years, there appears to be two camps in BSV when it comes to tokens. The dominant one being we want only regulated tokens, security tokens, tokens backed by real assets, with real utility, that real businesses and enterprises can use to make their businesses more efficient. The other, perhaps out of jealousy for what’s going on in other blockchains being let’s just port those Ethereum ERC20’s over and let it run wild for it might pump the BSV price! Funny thing is neither has happened as developers are busy debating whether tokens should be on layer 0 or layer 1 or layer 100 but that’s a topic for another day. Both views are myopic. 



Tokens are going to be a much bigger deal on BitCoin than anyone might imagine. 

How many websites are there on the internet? I looked it up recently and the answer is 1.7Bn. How many token contracts are there on the Ethereum chain? The answer is 350,000. 



Websites are kind of hard to set up - you have to purchase a domain name, at least use a website template creator, and there isn’t that much use for getting one for the average person. Not when you can have an Instagram page, a Facebook account, a Twitter handle, a Medium blog without having your own site. Yet there are 1.7Bn of them! Ethereum tokens are prohibitively expensive mining fee wise to generate. Out of interest, I asked one of the devs who minted the original USDC contract during my days at Circle to find the transaction. It cost 0.44 ETH. At today’s prices that’s well over $500 to create a token. Yet there are 350,000 contracts!



I would wager there will be over 100Bn unique tokens on BitCoin and I’d guess higher but I don’t want to be outside the bounds of the very Overton window I’m creating.

It takes a few seconds to issue a token on BitCoin and at current mining fees, less than a tenth of a cent to issue. If I’m a store owner, I might issue a different gift card a week for the various deals I have going on. If I’m an artist, a different NFT for each piece of artwork. Neither the store owner nor the artist needs more than one website and you start to see the math.

If reading this, you still think tokens are going to be contained to some narrow definition of ‘security’ tokens, or NASDAQ like tokens, or fiat currency tokens, realise it’s like saying the internet will only have The New York Times or CNN or some licensed officially approved site. It’s ok if not every account on Instagram is world class photography. Not every Twitter account is going to be insightful (that’s clear) and that’s ok. In a world of 100Bn unique tokens, You bet there’s going to be a great deal of useless ones and a pretty large number of scams. Just like there are websites that are phishing for your passwords, websites with illegal content, and websites with viruses in them. Over time, services emerged to protect you by blocking, or warning you about potentially dangerous websites.

What’s the bigger picture and what do tokens have to do with a real-time economy? I’ve made the case for there being a ton of tokens. Does that mean it’s just going to be a Coinmarketcap with a lot more pages? An exchange with a lot more trading pairs? No, a lot more exciting than that.

A world with 100Bn tokens means every single asset, service, good, company, project, video, post and many more abstract things than one can imagine is going to have a dynamic, live price. It’s not about the tokens, it’s about the markets. Today, you visit a restaurant and you check Yelp to see if has a good review. BSV entrepreneurs are making some new review site but with reviews posted on the blockchain thinking this is the problem that needs solving. “Immutable reviews”. Much more valuable than a review or immutable review however is if this particular restaurant’s loyalty token is trading at a premium to the other one next door. There’s actually money on the line. Then after eating, instead of being a foodie with a blog and an Instagram to hype up such restaurant, if you’ve got that talent for knowing what’s going to be the next hot restaurant, you can just buy on the open market more of the restaurant’s tokens. Yes, a local foodie just became an crypto trader. Now you profit when you promote the restaurant on your blog. The chef who started that restaurant instead of using Groupon to attract an initial set of customers who have no loyalty to you, can instead issue 10,000 tokens, where each dish costs 100 tokens. Pretty soon if your food is delicious, those token prices are going to jump. Think Global, Live Local is not just going to do good, it’s going to now make you rich. 



I grew up in a lower middle class first generation immigrant family. I remember being a teenager in those years where oil prices were very volatile as the world approached the idea of “Peak Oil”. We would sometimes drive by a gas station one day where prices were a few cents cheaper than the day before, and even though the tank was half full, we filled up. Other days, the warning light would be on, but we held off for another day to fill up the tank in hopes prices would come down. Is this speculation on oil prices bad? Another fun memory I had was going grocery shopping with my folks and my favourite cookies were the Chip Ahoy Crunchy chocolate. Eating those with milk is probably half the reason for my height. Once in a while they would be on sale but next to them were the No-Name brand versions of the same cookies. Chip Ahoys were definitely better but were they $2/100grams better? No. We would calculate every time to decide which we would buy. Is this speculation on cookie price bad? How come other goods and services in the economy didn’t fluctuate in price? That’s what’s always fascinated me. I knew they would if they could. With Bitcoin, it was possible.

Tokens on Bitcoin with the perpetual scaling design of Bitcoin where it isn’t the holder that’s rewarded (Proof of Stake) but rather those contributing to scaling the network (Proof of Work) will lead to the formation of markets where markets were too inefficient to exist - unlocking trillions of value in the process. 



A fully tokenised economy makes everything efficient, fair, honest, and real-time. I don’t mean efficient like fast transactions or cheap mining fees. It’s the economy that will be efficient. You won’t need to be a big grocery chain or a big oil company or big tech company with financial analysts, and big data and machine learning folks in order to know what to set the price of a Chips Ahoy or a Gallon of oil or surge pricing on a taxi ride. It’ll be orders of magnitudes better than that and for every person on earth because it’s all going to be open, issuable, transferable, tradeable. You won’t be checking page 978,950 of Coinmarketcap. You won’t be scrolling to AHOY/USDT on an exchange. I predict all of this will happen without you realising that it did and all our lives will improve as a result.

For those who immediately think of the regulatory ramifications of this, I’ve thought the same. Recommendations for beginner board games, gateway board games, or next step board games (or any myriad variations) are spread across the wilderness of the internet like dandelions...

So here are some of our recommendations.

All right, so lots of these gateway lists are excellent, but they are very similar. One list will have significant crossover with another. And another. And another. The clear reasoning behind this is that there really are a handful of games that are just great to recommend to people new to the hobby.

These 10 are going to appear on a lot of lists:

- Pandemic (2008) - Ticket to Ride (2004) - Catan (1995) - Sushi Go (2013) - Carcassonne (2000) - Codenames (2015) - One Night Ultimate Werewolf (2014) - Splendor (2014) - 7 Wonders (2010) - King of Tokyo (2011)

Each of these games has plenty of merit (I make this statement even though, for the sake of full disclosure, I freely admit we've never played 7 Wonders or Splendor, and it's been 20+ years since I last played Catan). The choice not to include any of these games here is because, frankly, I don't want this list to be completely redundant.

If you're anything like me, as a curious beginner to the hobby, you've made some permutation of this google search a whole lotta times. You've seen Pandemic and Ticket to Ride recommendations on a baker's dozen websites. If, for some reason, this is your first list like this, here are a few sites worth your traffic:

It's really difficult to recommend games to people, not only because of the reasoning previously stated (that many recommendations are made so often they are simply rote), but it also presupposes that my opinions here have some kind of merit. With that in mind, I am writing this list because this is the list that I really needed about four or five years ago. I googled this topic incessantly, and more often than not I purchased games that were simply not a good fit for me and Kathleen. Games like Pixel Tactics or Summoner Wars are interesting and well-made games, but they don't particularly fit our play styles. Being as we flew into this hobby unaccompanied, we did plenty of wandering in the dark. If I've done my job here, each of these games will be different, presenting the players with a variety of mechanics spread across the hobby, each offering a different feel and scratching a different itch.

Okay, all that wordy garbagio out of the way, here are the criteria I kept in mind while making this list:

- Mechanics: Each of these games represents a different set of mechanics that should help point you in which direction you may further enjoy with bigger, heavier games. - Price: These games are not expensive, and this is REALLY important to me. I hate when I see people recommend something like Pandemic: Legacy or Gloomhaven as a game for new hobbyists. These are great games, but if you're not all-in to this hobby, do not buy a $100+ game. Wait until you know what you like. There are plenty of satisfying, well-designed games that I do not want to ever play. This says more about me than about the game. Save your money while learning what you like. - Complexity: These are all reasonably simple and straightforward games. Beyond that, they [almost] all act as gateway games into bigger games–you'll see one exception later. If you like a certain mechanic you experienced, you're a spitting distance away from a bigger, heavier, thinkier game. - Footprint: This is an inherited concern thanks to having a conscientious wife and a big collection. Small box games that pack a punch are precious. Learn to love 'em, especially if you live in a small apartment.

Being as this is the Player One Player Two site, it should go without saying that we believe these all play very well with two players.

Enough of that, let's get moving. This post is long enough already.

Kingdomino (2016) $14.49; Complexity 1.21/5; BGG Mechanics: Drafting, Tile Placement

I'm putting Kingdomino first because this is the game most likely to appear on other lists (it won the Spiel des Jahres the year it was released, the German Game of the Year award). 

Kingdomino is a lovely little tile laying game that incorporates drafting and a clever exponential scoring system. In Kingdomino, players will draft tiles from an available pool, tiles that have different land types on them--like fields, lakes, or caverns. As you draft tiles, you will play them into your kingdom matching like land types (just like dominos! see? it's clever!). 

The larger a specific kind of land type, the more points you'll score. Similar to Carcassonne, there are bonus multipliers that you'll be looking for that will help you grow your score faster. But which tile you drafted will dictate the order in which you'll get to draft in the next round, presenting you with an excellent dilemma each round. Should you draft that great tile, knowing it will put you farther down the line next round, or will you draft conservatively, putting yourself in a better position moving forward? Unlike Carcassonne, there are no meeples to drop across your map, meaning this game will not press you on the touch choice of it/when to drop a meeple, but arguably you'll feel less regret when you choose poorly.

Kingdomino plays fast, has excellent artwork, and presents more options and choices than Carcassonne without robbing you of Carcassonne's easy/breezy feel. The box is small, the teach is fast, and it's cheap.

Came Up Cards (2016) Out of Stock today, check back!; Complexity 1.67/5; BGG Mechanisms: Betting/Bluffing, Hand Management

Camel Up is a well-loved board game about camels racing in the desert that I've never played. Again, we are price-conscious 'round here, and when I purchased Came Up Cards, it was done understanding that this small box would give me a good experience of the wild racing/betting game that is Camel Up and save me about $25 in the process. This is not the only _____: The Card Game that will appear on this list either.

(Side note: I am dumbfounded that this is currently out of stock everywhere. Keep looking around, it will come back!)

When you think of games involving racing, the first assumption is that the game will center around you controlling one racer and, you guessed it, trying to cross the finish line first. Camel Up Cards is not that game, which is why it's a refreshing play. Rather than pushing your own racer towards the finish line, you'll be playing cards from your hands to move individual camels forward towards the finish line. Getting over the finish line will end the game, but it won't mean anything for winning. The point of the game is to bet on who the winning–or losing–camel will be. Certain cards will denote how you believe each camel will finish, and the earlier you take a card, the more money (points) it will give you when the game ends. But who's to say what cards your opponent is holding.

Camel Up Cards is wild. You can make early bets based on what you're holding, but your opponent can and will play cards that will really screw up what you're doing. Add in the crazy palm tree, the desert fox, and the ability to stack the camels, and it's impossible to guess too far ahead who will win, but that won't stop you from trying.

I don't normally like "zany" or "wacky" games, and this game veers dangerously close to being both. Ultimately, it's a really fun and wild experience, but not without strategy. It gets crazy, but doesn't ever go off the rails, which I appreciate. BGG has the best player count at 4, but with fewer players this game is much more strategic than out of crazy, which is what I like. The more players you add, the less control you'll have over what will happen in the race. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but you better know what you're getting into a 4+ player game.

Coal Baron: The Great Card Game (2016) $22.69; Complexity 2.68/5; BGG Mechanisms: Worker Placement, Set Collection, Hand Management

Worker placement is, for many, the evergreen mechanic. New worker placement games come out all the time, with some fitting perfectly into the most inside-the-box expectation of worker placement and others working to flip the whole genre on its head. The basic idea of worker placement is uber simple: take one of your workers, put them on an action space, and do that action. Each action will have a limited number of spaces, adding a bit of a wrinkle to your plans once people start to block you. I love the idea of worker placement, but this idea of blocking really irks me, which is why I tend to enjoy subversions to the genre more than more meat and potatoes staples of the genre.

Coal Baron: The Great Card Game (henceforth known simply as Coal Baron--not to be mistaken for Coal Baron: The Board Game) fits neatly into the "subverts the genre" column. This is a game about building trains, loading them with coal, and fulfilling contracts for points. In terms of the actual worker placement in the game, never will you be outright blocked from taking an action, which delights me. 

However, there are some built-in wrinkles. For example, you don't have workers as you'd immediately expect (meeples or pawns), but rather a hand of numbered cards that represent your workers. You must play cards down to action spaces in numerical order to take the action. So the first person to take a locomotive card to begin building their train must play a #1 worker. The next player to do this action must play a #2 worker (or two #1s), and so on. In this way, a space is never filled by workers, but taking an action becomes increasingly costly. 

In this way, Coal Baron feels like it moves beyond worker placement and into hand management/action selection territory. There will always be a question of not only what you are doing, but when you choose to do it. Should you rush to take a contract and only spend a #1 worker, or wait until a better contract may be revealed, but be forced to pay more for it?

The Montreal Canadiens are into the playoffs as the Atlantic Division champions. Heading into Saturday, they had a meaningless game against the Detroit Red Wings, one that the Habs were actually considered underdogs in by betting odds (source: bet365). However, they won their game 3-2 in overtime in what was the franchise's final game at Joe Louis Arena. Looking forward, the Habs are entirely focused on the post-season and, where many other teams that are guaranteed a post-season berth have had to jostle for positioning lately, the Canadiens have known for a little while who they will face in the playoffs. It seems that winning their division won't help them much in terms of getting a good draw as they will face the New York Rangers. Heading into Sunday, Montreal (final total) and New York have 103 and 100 points in the standings respectively. In short, despite being the top seed in the Atlantic Division and putting up an impressive tally of points this season, the Habs are going to face a team with similar regular-season credentials in the first round of the playoffs. How this situation came about is certainly due to the strength of the Metropolitan Division this year and the format for the NHL's playoffs. The top-three teams qualify directly in each division with fourth and fifth-placed teams entering their records into the Wild Card standings. The Rangers' record won't hold up against the beasts of the Metro, but it does make them the first Wild Card. As such they will open the playoffs against the weaker division winner, in this case, the Canadiens. Arguably Montreal would have been better off finishing second in the Atlantic and avoiding New York in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. At 27-12-2 when visiting, New York will finish the regular season with more road wins than Montreal have home wins. He enters this weekend 18th from the goals-against average point of view. If a goaltender puts up a stop sign in the upcoming first-round series, then it would more likely be Price. Also, Montreal can ground some confidence in the fact that they went 3-0 against the Rangers this season. However, both an Atlantic Division title and a 100+ point season didn't exactly do wonders for Montreal's playoff draw. I see the Canadiens as mild favorites for the second round whereas all other division winners will be looking a lot stronger than that.

The mobile gamer can look back at 2018 with an affectionate and misty eye, secure in the knowledge that gaming on mobile devices gets more diverse, sophisticated and polished with each year. In this respect, 2019 also is shaping up to be a banner year on this front.

Roughly speaking, the most exciting upcoming games can be split into three groups: the name-brand megahits-in-waiting, boardgame adaptations, and indie projects. Read on to see what the who’s who of mobile gaming are cooking up for this year’s treats.

Dire Wolf Digital (Board Game)

This isn't the name of a game, but the name of a company that announced this year they're making a bucket-load of digital board game adaptations. Because we only have the announcement text to go on, we've decided to keep the new games all in one place until we know more. The games Direwolf are bringing to digital (which afawk also includes mobile devices) are:

Mage Knights – It's worth noting this is the first step in a bigger agreement with WizKids, so it's likely we'll be seeing more announcements this year.

Wings of Glory – A popular table-top aerial skirmish game.

Raiders of the North Sea – An excellent worker placement game themed around the 8th and 9th century viking raids (pictured).

Yellow & Yangtze – a Reiner Knizia tile placement game of civilization building.

Sagrada – A dice drafting game about creating works of art.

Root – the recent Kickstarter sensation about asymmetrical warfare in the woods.

We're not sure which project is due to appear first - possible WizKids & Mage Knights, given the importance that project has within the announcement? We'll update as we learn more.

Evolution (Board Game)

This was on the 'MIA' until recently, when North Star Digital announced that it would finally be releasing on February 12th. This is a digital adaptation of the popular boardgame of the same name, where you play as emergent species attempting to survive and adapt. You must use cards and combine traits to make sure your species gets the food it needs to live. This is a game of up to four players, and will feature a solo campaign vs. AI, as well as cross-platform online multiplayer.

Mario Kart Tour (Racing)

It’s been practically a year since this title was first announced and outlined with few concrete details added between now and then. Nintendo’s mobile offerings have run the gamut, from the premium Mario Run, the Miitomo social & style app everyone tried and forgot about, to the successful and generally great Fire Emblem: Warriors. Mario Kart is a treasured and classic franchise, even amongst Nintendo offerings, so that reputation guarantees some level of careful handling. It remains an open question whether the game will be a premium or freemium model, but the launch date is still projected to be March.

Diablo Immortal (Action RPG)

Diablo Immortal will draw some side-eye and mockery, having been already made notorious because of its horribly mistimed announcement. (Yes, we have phones, but read the room, Activision-Blizzard). Even more puzzlingly, the game is being created in partnership with NetEase, a Chinese developer whose resume already includes ‘Eternal Realm’ (无尽神域) itself essentially a Diablo clone. Weird stuff: the official license merging with a pretender to the throne to make a hybrid project together. Concerns about endless grind or re-skinning of Eternal Realm are well-founded, but while most of us will be as judge-y as possible we’ll also probably still give the final product a try. Good action RPGs live or die by loot, character progression and above all, delicate-yet-accurate controls, so it will be interesting to see if Diablo Immortal will be a good game as well as the inevitable cash cow.

Artifact (CCG)

Two juggernauts of early-aughts gaming, Valve and Richard Garfield, collaborated to create Artifact, a lane-based card game with its theme and heroes lifted from DOTA 2. Launching on desktops this November, the game has been universally praised for its gameplay and just as roundly (and soundly, I might add) panned for its multi-layered pay scheme, which presents significant barriers to entry and requires quite the investment. The game is a purchase upfront, with tournament tickets and the chance to earn cards in-game through other methods both requiring further shills at some point. Yes, there is an individual card market which allows powerful and rapid deckbuilding, but at what cost? Amazing game with an incredibly rocky launch, but its trade winds are already shifting. The game is excellent and its market & monetization can only improve. Watch this space.

Five Tribes (Boardgame)

Five Tribes, oldie but goodie, will make its digital debut this year. Days of Wonder has been updating and digitising its catalogue at a steady pace and with fantastic results. Five Tribes central mechanic is just like mancala. Pick a space and drop the meeples one by one along the path. Dead simple, but if you think it makes the game easy, you’d be dead wrong. The Five Tribes each possess unique scoring criteria and effects, and the turn-order bid means timing depends on correctly valuing the current layout. Many simple bits add up to make a nigh-perfect game.

Scythe: Digital Edition (Boardgame)

In another history, the Great War also ruined Europe and annihilated a generation, but its nations and technologies faced the blight and devastation quite differently. With large mechs, steampunk agricultural combines and faux-Eurasian player nations, Scythe gives each player a unique entity to steer to victory. Engine building games are always efficiency races, conversion puzzles, but Scythe’s unique setting, eye-catching miniatures and indirect player confrontation quickly made a it a fan favorite amongst the gaming community. Its rollout on Steam has been smooth experience, with decent AI and a robust tutorial. The assets and UI will translate well to mobile and what used to cost near three figures will be available to most anyone for a fraction of the price.

Terraforming Mars (Boardgame)

Terraforming Mars sounds like a noble goal for all of humanity. In reality, the game is a push-and-pull competition for corporations to garner by prestige by...terraforming Mars. Three categories: oxygen, temperature and ocean coverage dictate the endgame, but to get there, players will reshape the red planet into a bright blue hope. It’s a Euro though-and-though: precisely balanced, intricately co-dependent and inevitably point-based. But the close match between theme and mechanic makes this game deeply satisfying and intuitive to learn and explain, and the action selection mechanic is uniquely innovative and inspired. Just when I think boardgame design is tapped out, something truly exceptional rises to the top.

Mew-Genics (Sim)

This one has been incubating forever but should be worth it when it finally gets here. Ed McMillen (of Binding of Isaac fame) has been teasing this cat-breeding simulator for ages. The game has been described as a mix of Tamagotchi, Pokemon and the Sims, with its signature art style courtesy of McMillen. All bets for a playful wild game about the weirdness, sweetness, malice and all-around havoc of cat-raising seem to be right on the money. The ideas are there, the premise is promising, the only question remaining is when it will get here.

Overland (Finji) (TBS/Survival) 

Overland is tactical turn-based survival meets cross-country road trip (from hell). Each waypoint is a battle, a flashpoint conflict over some minor life-extending objective. Its overland map and procedural generation seem reminiscent of FTL (or its follow-up Into the Beach) but the setting here is familiar people struggling with post-apocalyptic daily hardship. Water, medicine, gas, weapons: the items are banal but vital. The game uses minimalism and scarcity to great effect, sketching characters and strategic scenarios alike with the barest elements.

Impossible Bottles (Rhythm/Action)

Various robots move about in their bottles and raging about like a bull in a china shop. Each level presents one of these Impossible Bottles for the player to fix by manipulating the environment and repairing the situation, or at the very least soothing its sole occupant. A scientist built these robots as part of a perpetual motion machine for unlimited energy, but they don’t quite work as is. The secret to fixing everything is music, or in gameplay terms: rhythm. One-touch gameplay and lush, fantastic art, with a slated mid-year release.

Nowhere Prophet (Card Game)

Nowhere Prophet: this one is a doozy and a little secretive. The dark horse of this race, if you will. In the game, post-apocalyptic leaders trek across a scabrous landscape to gather supporters and supplies, occasionally clashing with foes or environmental dangers. This card game has grid-based combat as well procedurally generated encounters. It’s a card-battler roguelike, essentially, with a unique setting and what seems to be a robust battle system.

Heaven’s Vault (Interactive Fiction)

Inkle (of 80 Days interactive fiction fame) has been teasing their mechanically ambitious Heaven’s Vault for some time now. An archaeologist-slash-xenolinguist explores the dusty remains of an alien civilization on an unknown planet, with a vivid backdrop of sienna sand and celestial blue. There’s some pretty nifty procedural tricks behind the code-breaking and translation, and while its approach to storytelling is a little less handcrafted, it has the potential to have even more surprises and replayability than the globe-trotting 80 Days.

Mailbag: Third Base, Cessa, Murphy, Myers, Opener, Frazier

J.A. Happ will start ALDS Game One tomorrow night

Only nine questions in the mailbag this week because, frankly, the postseason is wearing me out over at CBS. The League Division Series round is always the busiest. There are many games! Anyway, send your questions to RABmailbag (at) gmail (dot) com and I’ll get to as many as I can.

Andujar. (Presswire)

Ben Doyle asks: I love Miguel Andujar, but what about using a third base opener in the Wild Card game? Start your favorite defensive third basemen, bat him 8th, and pinch-hit Andujar their very first at bat. Two or three innings of better defense, at the cost of slightly delaying Andujar’s plate appearances.

It’s an interesting idea. I’ve seen fans (of all teams) float similar ideas. Prior to the Wild Card Game, I saw some A’s fans suggest they should start Matt Joyce at catcher instead of Jonathan Lucroy, so in case Lucroy’s lineup spot came up in the first inning, they’d have a better hitter at the plate. Lucroy then goes in for defense in the bottom of the first regardless of whether Joyce hits. Also, in the NL, there’s talk that road teams should “start” the previous day’s starting pitcher, so if that lineup spot comes up in the top of the first you can pinch-hit without losing your actual starting pitcher. Whoever you’re planning to start that day then comes out of the bullpen for the bottom of the first.

Anyway, using a third base opener for Andujar in one specific game is an interesting idea. You couldn’t do it all the time. The problem here is roster space. The Yankees carried eight relievers and three bench players pretty much all season. Do you burn one of those three bench players for maybe two innings of defense at the start of the game? This seems like one of those things that would work much better in September or in a Wild Card Game with a deep bench. Start Neil Walker at third, then pinch-hit Miguel Andujar and get him his three at-bats, then put Adeiny Hechavarria in for defense late. Fun idea. I’m not sure how practical it is.

Greg asks: I noticed old friend Russell Martin is being paid 20 million next year the last year of his contract, while his AAV 16.4 million. If he were to be traded and cash was attached to the deal (similar to the McCann deal), could the AAV actually go into the negatives? Or does it just stop at 0.

It stops at zero. There was some confusion about this a few years ago. I don’t remember if it was the Vernon Wells trade or the Alfonso Soriano trade, but the math for one of those deals worked out in such a way that it appeared the Yankees would receive a credit against the luxury tax. It doesn’t work like that though. It just counted as zero against the luxury tax. Martin is pretty terrible nowadays. Soon-to-be 36-year-old catchers usually aren’t the most productive bunch. The Blue Jays would have to pay down a lot of his contract to get me interested. Pretty much all of it, in fact. And even then I’m not sure.

Paul asks: With strikeouts and home runs up (so fewer balls in play), and improved positioning, is defense less important than ever?

In theory, yes. There are fewer balls in play right now than ever before. This season 65.2% of all plate appearances resulted in a ball in play. Ten years ago it was 70.3%. The further back you go, the more balls in play. Fewer balls in play means fewer opportunities for the defense, so, in that sense, defense isn’t as important as it once was. That said, there are still a lot of balls in play. Also players are hitting the ball harder than ever before. They’re bigger and stronger and it shows. So there may be fewer balls in play, but the ball that are put in play are somewhat harder to defend. Defense will never not be important. It may be easier to hide a bad defender than ever before though.

Nicholas asks: What do you think Luis Cessa’s role will be next year. I believe he is out of options after this season.

Cessa will be out of options next season, meaning the Yankees can’t send him to Triple-A without putting him on waivers. Who knows, he might clear. I like Cessa more than most and, at this point, the Yankees should just stick him in short relief. One inning at a time and let him air it out. Starting and long relieving isn’t really working. Nothing that happens with Cessa this offseason would surprise me. Wouldn’t be surprised if he gets traded, or if he gets designated for assignment, or he stays with the Yankees and gets a look in Spring Training. Domingo German, Tommy Kahnle, and A.J. Cole will all be out of options next season and are kinda in the same boat. Something will have to give this winter.

Eric asks: Does Daniel Murphy make sense for the Yankees as a free agent option? You sign him to play first base and if the either Torres or Andujar have a sophomore slump, you would potentially move Murphy back to one of those positions.

He might. Murphy is worth a longer discussion outside a mailbag setting and after the postseason. At this point he’s a bat-only guy. He’s been a bad defensive player for years and now he’s barely mobile after microfracture knee surgery. Murphy can hit righties (130 wRC+) but not so much lefties (51 wRC+), he can’t run, and he can’t really play defense. He’ll turn 34 in April and we’re getting dangerously close to platoon DH status here. That said, Murphy can still hit righties and he never strikes out (11.4%), so there’s some utility here. Squint your eyes and you can see some versatility. If you’re willing to live with bad defense, yes, Murphy could be a fit next season.

Geoff asks: Do you think MLB might revisit the playoff structure after this season? Both the Yanks and the A’s finished well ahead of the Indians, yet they both have to play the WC while Cleveland gets an auto bid to the DS because their division is awful. The Indians got to repeatedly beat up on the worst teams in the AL, while the yanks and As had to deal with 2 other teams in their same division of Cleveland quality or better (Rays and Red Sox; Mariners and Astros).

Nah. MLB loves the current playoff format and, personally, I love the Wild Card Game. I hate when the Yankees have to play in it, but, overall, the Wild Card Game is a blast. Is it fair? No, not really. It’s not just the Yankees and Athletics this year either. The 98-win Pirates had to play the 97-win Cubs in the 2015 NL Wild Card Game. I am pro-Wild Card Game and, ideally, MLB would reseed everyone after the regular season. Five teams in each league make the postseason and the fourth and fifth best teams get the wild card spots regardless of division. That’d be great. That gives every team a reason to keep playing hard to rack up wins. The Indians were able to coast all September because their division was so bad. The winner-take-all Wild Card Game is a ratings bonanza and it’s not going away.

Justin asks: If the Padres make Wil Myers available should NYY be interested for him at 1B? What’s a comparable trade package?

The Padres are going to trade Myers soon, I think. He belongs at first base and they just locked up Eric Hosmer to that monster contract, so the position is blocked. Also, San Diego signed Myers to an extension a few years ago and look at his annual salaries:

2019: $5.5M

2020: $22.5M

2021: $22.5M

2022: $22.5M

2013: $20M club option ($1M buyout)

Yeah, I’d bet on Myers being moved before Opening Day 2020. Myers was the 2013 AL Rookie of the Year and I feel like we still don’t know who he is as a player. He hit .253/.318/.446 (107 wRC+) this year. He hit .243/.328/.464 (107 wRC+) last year. He’s a career .253/.328/.439 (109 wRC+) hitter in over 2,600 big league plate appearances. Is that it? Myers turns 28 in December. When’s the step forward coming? Or is this as good as it gets? I’m inclined to stay away here.

David asks: If the Yankees were to utilize openers next season, who on the current roster would be best? My guess would be that Betances would be best suited, have him pitch an inning exactly every other day (or two innings every three days). That way he would never lose his rhythm and have a set schedule.

Dellin Betances did jump out to me. It’ll depend what the rest of the bullpen looks like, of course, but sending Betances out there to face the other team’s best hitters in the first inning every other day or once every three days or whatever seems pretty appealing. That said, if Dellin is the team’s best reliever again like he was this season, it would be awfully tough for the Yankees to keep him away from high-leverage situations in the late innings.

Joe asks: Do you think Clint Frazier is a candidate for Arizona Fall League?

He has too much service time. My unofficial math has him at one year and 12 days of big league service time and the Arizona Fall League limit is one year. There are injury exemptions from time to time, usually for pitchers rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. If Clint could get an exemption, great! I’m not sure he’s healthy though. Frazier was shut down with his latest setback on September 5th. The Arizona Fall League season begins Tuesday. I’m not sure he can go from suffering a setback and being shut down to ready for game action in a month.

Special teams were not kind to the 2016-17 New Jersey Devils. Their power play and penalty kill success rates were in the bottom third in the league. As a part of the AATJ 2017-18 Season Preview, this post breaks down what happened with special teams and what to expect - good and bad - for this coming season. One of the many areas where the New Jersey Devils struggled last season are special teams. Both their power play and their penalty kill yielded success rates that ranked in the bottom third of the National Hockey League. While most of the game is played in 5-on-5 - a situation the Devils performed poorly in last season - special teams can absolutely turn the tide of a game. This is a part of the team that ideally would improve as part of a larger goal of showing improvement as a team. Can they do so? Let’s look at where they are coming from and what they might do to in order to set some expectations. WHAT HAPPENED LAST SEASON WITH THE POWER PLAY? I lamented the Devils’ power play in too many comments, recaps, and Tweets in this past season. So many opportunities seemingly wasted. So many dump-ins and turnovers to end forward movement. So many shorthanded goals against. I was not a fan. Let’s look at the numbers rather than focus on memories of the past. The overall success rate was not as bad as that seems - but it was not all that good either. According to NHL.com, the Devils’ success rate was 17.5%, which was the 22nd highest rate in the league. The team went 44 for 251 to get that mark. Their 251 power play opportunities was tied with Anaheim for the eleventh most in the NHL. Their 44 goals ranked 20th in the NHL. Perhaps it would be more fair to state that the team had plenty of opportunities relative to most teams - and they did not score so many goals. Further, their 44 goals were almost entirely 5-on-4 goals as the team converted just one (1) 5-on-3 goal all season. The thought about the shorthanded goals was fair as originally written. Their 12 shorthanded goals allowed were the most in the NHL last season. That just stands out as bad on its own. The team stats at Natural Stat Trick go a little a deeper and really highlight that the Devils’ power play was not all that effective. Their rate stats for the power play show the following: * The Devils’ Shots For per 60 minute rate was 48.1, which was the ninth lowest rate in the NHL. This would be fine if the Devils were scoring plenty of PPGs. They weren’t though. * The Devils struggled to get scoring chances. Their Scoring Chance For per 60 minute rate was 44.31, which was the fourth lowest rate in the NHL. Their High Danger Scoring Chance For per 60 minute rate was 18.65, which was the twelfth lowest rate in the NHL. The Devils’ shooting percentages in those situations were roughly 11.4% and 20.3%, respectively. When they were able to get chances, they finished them at a good rate. The issue was getting the chances at all. * Over all shots, the Devils’ shooting percentage during the power play was 12.54%. That percentage put the Devils right at the league median. Again, a fine rate - when the Devils were able to get shots off at all. This all points to a New Jersey power play that really did have issues in terms of generating shots and scoring chances, which are shots within and around the slot. While the rates seem high on their own (it is a power play after all), that they were low in comparison to the other NHL teams shows that they were not high enough. Why so many issues? It seems like a cliche but the power play lacked a real identity. While the team preferred to set up in a 1-3-1 format, this was not always the case as one of the wingers could drop back to play the point. Even so, there were few common plays that the team would try. Making matters worse was the lack of consistency in personnel. According to NHL.com, only three Devils skaters played more than 200 minutes on the power play (Kyle Palmieri, Adam Henrique, Travis Zajac), nine skaters, but twenty skaters averaged at least fifty seconds per game on the power play in 2016-17. You cannot say that John Hynes and his staff were not willing to give some players chances on the man advantage that they may otherwise not receive. Sure, injuries, last season being a lost one in early 2017, and the timing of certain call-ups led to plenty of power play usage for players that otherwise would not get it on other teams. It still did not really work all that well based on the team stats. The most productive power player on the Devils was Palmieri with eight goals, eleven assists, and sixty shots on net per NHL.com. It is telling that Palmieri, Taylor Hall (45), and Michael Cammalleri (40) were the only skaters to put up over 40 shots on net. Even Henrique and Zajac, who played a lot of gross power play ice time, did not shoot thirty even shots on net. If there were plans, then it tended to end up on these guys to fire away. Results were mixed as the three combined for sixteen goals: eight for Palmieri, seven for Hall, and just one for Cammalleri. If there were any nice surprises among the scorers, then it was Pavel Zacha who scored five goals out of twelve shots while also providing eight assists. PREVIEWING THE 2017-18 POWER PLAY If there was one aspect of the team that was not all that hot in preseason, then it was the power play. That was somewhat understandable given that the team only had a handful of practices before jumping right into a preseason schedule of seven games over nine days. The penalty-filled games were opportunities for both teams to really practice their power play. Given that it was preseason, rosters were mixed up enough to not really get a feel for what the power play will try to do. It may be another 1-3-1 formation given that the coaching staff remains the same from last season. The team will likely prefer to have four forwards and one defenseman given who they have acquired this Summer. What is new are the players. Among those twenty players who averaged at least fifty seconds per game on the power play last season, only nine made it to the 23-man roster announced on Tuesday. And it is not likely that Andy Greene or John Moore will be a major part of it unless the roster commands it. The Devils did add defenseman Will Butcher and forwards Nico Hischier, Marcus Johansson, Drew Stafford, and Brian Boyle to the organization. Johansson, Stafford, and Boyle have averaged at least a minute per game on their respective team’s power plays last season. Johansson was especially utilized on Washington’s notorious top power play unit. Boyle, who we hope is able to play as soon as possible, can take some minutes on a secondary unit and at least use his size to cause screens in front. I think Stafford was signed in part because he has been good in front of the net and in power play situations. He’s quite good at passing the puck in tight spaces, which is a plus. With Travis Zajac out for several months, Stafford can be the man in the middle of the 1-3-1 and pounce on opportunities as he sees fit. I think that will be the plan with him for now. While they are rookies, I would expect to see plenty of Butcher and Hischier on man advantages to at least start the season. Butcher was given lots of minutes on the power play in preseason. Even in a game with Damon Severson, it was Butcher who was the lone defender on the ice with Palmieri, Hall, and Johansson on power plays. His passing skills and shot from the point are well suited for man advantage situations. The Devils are hoping he can be a viable contributor on a power play unit like they use Severson. Assuming when he does play; the Devils are carrying eight defensemen right now and who knows how long that lasts or how often Butcher stays in the lineup. As for Hischier, the 2017 first overall draft pick has shown that he has plenty of skill in his hands, grit in his game, and mind for both ends of the rink. It is unclear where would be the best place for him, but you can bet that the Devils will want to give him plenty of offensive situations to figure that out. He’ll at least stay on the roster as long as he is not injured. Additionally, as a sort of wild card, the Devils will try to include Mirco Mueller as a potential third option whenever Butcher is not in or if they want to provide a different look. Mueller has to effectively establish whether he is a NHL defenseman at all. He did have a good preseason, which is a good step towards that. It was highlighted by two goals from the point, both right off faceoffs. It remains to be seen whether Mueller’s slapshot is a repeatable threat and that he could be a point man on a power play. I do appreciate Mueller getting this opportunity instead of the Devils trying John Moore again, although I could see Moore getting some PP time if Mueller falters. Over the season, assuming this experiment works out and Butcher does become a regular, I’d expect the main power play defensemen to include Butcher, Severson, and possibly Mueller. These additions will join a power play side that already includes Palmieri, Hall, Henrique, Severson, and Zacha. Throw in someone like Miles Wood or eventual callups Joseph Blandisi and John Quenneville, and the Devils coaches have some options at hand. They could form one unit that will primarily feed Palmieri passes to the left circle for one-timers like they did in 2015-16. They could form another unit with a different approach to keep opposing penalty killers guessing. They could load up on one unit and have multiple players given the green light to fire if they have a good shot. It is like a puzzle - the coaches seemingly have plenty of pieces to put a picture together. What the team really needs to sort out first is how they approach making that picture. Again, the stats from Natural Stat Trick were consistent with a team that had problems with gaining the offensive zone and getting into shooting situations. The shooting percentage was fine, it was the shots that were lacking. What I recall from last season is consistent with that. If all Butcher is told to do is dump the puck in for a chase that likely fails or the unit is focused on passing rather than someone taking initiative, then the new additions will not be as effective. The coaches really need to step up this season in terms of coming up with breakout plays that the players can utilize, plays to run when they do get set up in the formation that they want, and means to improve puck control. The Devils power play can save themselves plenty of frustration and goals against with better movement and protection of the puck. If the Devils’ coaches and players can improve in those areas, then they’ll likely have more opportunities to get more shots on net, get more scoring chances, and (hopefully) get more goals. Improvement on the power play is a real possibility in 2017-18; it’ll take plenty of effort to get it. WHAT HAPPENED LAST SEASON WITH THE PENALTY KILL? The defensive side of special teams was not good last season either. Their success rate at killing penalties was 79.6%, which ranked 23rd in the NHL. This percentage came from allowing 53 goals out of 260 opportunities. Those values are worth knowing as the Devils allowed the sixth most power play goals in the league last season while also finishing tied for eight for the most times shorthanded. Discipline and stopping goals were not pluses as part of the PK. Scoring goals was relatively OK with six shorthanded goals. If there was any notable plus about the NJ PK, then it would have been their road penalty kill. For reasons I am not sure about, the Devils’ success rate on the road was one of the best in the league at 84.5% (22 PPGAs out of 142 situations). This plus was negated by their home penalty kill, which yielded the worst home success rate in the whole league at 73.7% (31 PPGAs out of 118 situations). Looking further at the team numbers shows that it was not as if the Devils’ PK units bled a lot of shots. According to Natural Stat Trick, the team’s per-sixty minute rate stats on the penalty kill were not too bad. New Jersey’s Corsi against rate (97.7, 12th in NHL), shots against rate (52.27, 12th), and scoring chances against rate (54.32, 14th), all finished above the league median. Their high danger scoring chance against rate (20.94, 16th) was just below the league median. These are all not too bad. They are not amazing and they could be better, but they all point to a PK unit that was OK when it came to allowing attempts, shots, and scoring chances. They had some good nights and some bad nights, but it evened out. So what was worse than being around or a bit above the median that led to a success rate that below the league median? All signs point to the goaltending. Cory Schneider and Keith Kinkaid combined for a team PK save percentage of 86.13%, the tenth lowest in the league last season. Schneider was below average in shorthanded situations with his lowest PK Sv% as a Devil at 85.5%. His previous low was in 2015-16 at 88.9%; that’s how big of a drop off it was last season. Kinkaid was around average with a 87.4%. While this was an issue in 2016-17, penalty killing save percentages can be volatile. Just some better puck luck could lead to improvement for both Schneider’s and Kinkaid’s save percentages in shorthanded situations. That alone may push the Devils’ penalty kill success rate to be closer to where the rate stats were. Getting away from the goalies and onto the skaters, the main four skaters for the penalty kill were Ben Lovejoy, Andy Greene, Travis Zajac, and Adam Henrique according to the ice time stats at NHL.com. Lovejoy and Greene were leaned on as they both averaged over three minutes of shorthanded ice time per game. The second unit (or if Lovejoy or Greene were unavailable) had a mix of Kyle Quincey, John Moore, Jon Merrill, and Steve Santini sharing minutes. As for forwards, Vernon Fiddler and Sergey Kalinin both played quite a bit on the PK until both were no longer Devils last season. Other forwards that averaged around a minute or more of PK time that were given chances included Devante Smith-Pelly, Blake Pietila, Blake Coleman, Blake Speers in his three games, and Kyle Palmieri. Only Coleman and Palmieri return in 2017-18. How did they do? The top four in minutes did relatively well. According to Natural Stat Trick, 226 players played at least 100 minutes on the PK last season. When ranked by shots against per sixty minutes, Lovejoy, Greene, Zajac, and Henrique all finished in the top 100. Lovejoy, Greene, and Zajac all had SA/60 rates below 50 and Henrique below 52. Those are some solid rates from a shot prevention standpoint. I’d go as far as to say that this was where Lovejoy was the most valuable and his pairing with Greene was functional. As for the guys outside of those four? Well, Fiddler, Smith-Pelly and Quincey were not too bad; but the team faced a higher rate of shots against when Santini, Moore, and Kalinin were involved. I know SA/60 is only one stat, but I think shot prevention is what a skater should focus on during a penalty kill. Even the higher rates were not so awful. Again, the goaltending was a relative weakpoint of the Devils’ PK and, as a result, the success rate suffered. PREVIEWING THE 2017-18 PENALTY KILL The good news is that most of the top PK unit returns for this season. Lovejoy, Greene, and Henrique are all back and ready to go. The bad news is that Travis Zajac is injured and will be for most of this season. There really is not a good replacement available. The new acquisitions at forward should not be expected to fill the gap. Marcus Johansson was not a regular on the PK in Washington. Drew Stafford has done some PK work in the past, but never to the amount that Zajac had done. Brian Boyle did average over two shorthanded minutes per game for a couple seasons in Tampa Bay. But that average shorthanded ice time per game dropped in each of the last two seasons and his SA/60 of nearly 73 was one of the highest rates in the league according to Natural Stat Trick. While he may be a center, knowing that does not fill me with confidence that Boyle could step in for Zajac. Nico Hischier definitely works hard on defense, which is great to see from a 18-year old jumping right in to the NHL. It would be asking a lot to have him play on the first penalty killing unit right away. Brian Gibbons, who made the Devils roster, could be utilized but, again, it would be asking too much to throw him into a top spot immediately. There really is not an internal replacement for Zajac that looks to step in right away. Blake Coleman was utilized on the penalty kill quite a bit in preseason and he could be a member of a unit as the season starts. Whether he can stick around in the NHL is another question, much less move up within the PK depth chart. Palmieri and Zacha both received some ice time last season. They may have to take some more shifts if only for the coaches to find out whether they can handle a larger PK role at all. Even then, it is questionable they can replace Zajac right away either. It is a tough decision. John Hynes and his staff may have to undergo some trial and error to find out who could fill in on the first unit until Zajac returns. That will help drive who ends on the second unit. It could be Coleman and Boyle, when Boyle is good to go. It could be Coleman and Hischier or Coleman and Stafford. Or even Zacha and Hischier. There are a lot of different options up front. Defensively, do not be surprised if it involves Santini when he’s in the lineup, Dalton Prout when he’s in the lineup, or Moore. This may not be such a huge deal since Lovejoy and Greene will likely and can take the majority of PK shifts. But you may see a little more trial and error on the secondary PK units. The coaches can make things a little easier on themselves if they continue to play a triangle-plus-one penalty kill. The plus one does not necessarily need to be a defensive stalwart. It needs to be someone who can pressure the puck carrier or point men into making a play while the triangle focuses on the middle. It is a role that someone who is aggressive and quick could fill in well. If the coaches can identify who that can be, then the first unit’s triangle could be manned by Henrique, Lovejoy, and Greene and the second unit’s triangle could be manned by other defensive minded players. While the PK unit was not so successful last season, the triangle-plus-one did work well in 2015-16 - and it helped that the goaltenders were much better. That’s the awkward thing about the penalty kill. If Schneider and Kinkaid are more fortunate and/or able to stop more pucks, then things will be better provided that the skaters can at least be a little better than the league median on the penalty kill. Not having Zajac for several months is a big deal and the Devils will be forced to try out some new faces on the PK units to see if anyone can fill the role in the meantime. But short of the skaters getting rolled over, improved goaltending performances may drive more success. There is one other aspect: discipline. The best penalty kill is not to take one. The good news is that Kyle Quincey and P.A. Parenteau are not on the Devils so they will not be among team leaders in minor penalties. The bad news is that Damon Severson, Miles Wood, Lovejoy, and Hall were also standouts in taking minor penalties and they’re on the team. Throw in Coleman taking 11 minors in 23 appearances last year and an emphasis on slashing penalties that may implicate plenty of slower defensemen who can get beaten by speed (Lovejoy), and I question whether the Devils can take fewer penalties in 2017-18. Whatever improvements these players can make as to avoid taking penalties will help lighten the load for the PK. Can they? I don’t know. Again, it is on the players. I wouldn’t hold my breath; don’t be surprised if the Devils remain around the top ten in shorthanded situations again. ADDITIONAL SPECIAL TEAM SITUATIONS The Devils were not awful at shootouts last season. Really. They went 3-3. It will be a challenge to identify who will be taking shootouts, though. I wrote more about it in this post. If the Devils can find reliable shooters, then that could help them get a few extra points in the standings. As for overtime situations, well, the Devils had only one overtime period in preseason and it was in their second game with a not-at-all full NHL roster. In general, the 3-on-3 overtime is all about possession and smart play. Throwing pucks away on shots or turning it over or taking a penalty can be costly. The 2016-17 Devils know all about that as it led to some of their seven overtime goals and many of their eleven overtime goals against. The good news is that the Devils should be able to nail down who can be their three players. Should Butcher prove to be the real deal in offensive situations, they can pick from him, Severson, Greene, and even Moore for a defenseman. Up front, Hall, Palmieri, Hischier, Zacha, Johansson, and Stafford will enjoy the extra room. It all comes down to which group can best maintain possession and win it back without taking a call. Succeeding there would be good first step to turn that OT record around. Again, it can help them get a few extra points in the standings. YOUR TAKE I see some possibility for improvement on the power play; improved save percentages while staying the course on the PK could yield more success on its own. Overtime and shootout remains up in the air, but the possibility for improvement is not totally impossible - just a bit difficult to identify. Can the coaches realize it? I’ll leave that question to CJ, who will address the coaching and management side of things later today. In the meantime, I want to know your opinions and thoughts about the Devils’ special teams.
