UCAM upped the ante of ‘Make in India’ spirit with gear hobbing machine unit Nimble Machines
Government’s ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign for building ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ may have been a recent call across the country but some Indian companies made it a point long ago to follow the path of self-reliance and pave the path for other companies. Nimble Machines division, a strategic business unit of India’s leading CNC and customized rotary manufacturer UCAM Pvt. Ltd., was one such striking initiative. Rajesh Gawhale, Head - Nimble Machines Division, UCAM Pvt. Ltd. shared the story of the journey and their plans for the Government’s flagship program in conversation with Machine Maker.
The Inception
UCAM, being a Rotary table manufacturer, was looking for a precision gear hobbing machine to produce high-quality Worm Gears. But not many manufacturers were able to offer the quality standard required by UCAM. The few who did have the required quality were not affordable. Thus the 1st gear hobbing machine was born at UCAM in the year 2003, for internal consumption. Form Cutting                                        
In Form cutting gear tooth shape is reproduced by machining the gear blank around its periphery. The cutter travels axially along the length of a gear tooth and hence producing an appropriate depth to produce the gear tooth profile. After each tool is cut, the cutter is withdrawn, the gear blank is rotated and cutter proceeds to cut another tooth. This process continues until all the process have been machined.
Broaching can also be used to gear teeth and in particular suitable for producing internal gear teeth.
Gear teeth may be cut on a special machine with a single point cutting tool that is guided by a template in the shape of a gear tooth Profile.
Gear generating
The cutting tool used in gear generating may be a pinion shaped cutter, a rack-shaped cutter, or a hob.
1.      In case of pinion shaped cutter it can be considered as one of the two gears in a conjugate pair, with the other being the gear blank.
2.      On a rack shaper, the generating tool is a segment of a rack which reciprocates parallel to the axis of the gear blanks
3.      A hob is basically a gear cutting worm, or a screw, made into a gear generating tool by a series of longitudinal slots or gashes machined into it to form the cutting teeth.

Something About Spur Gears and Helical Gears
Spur gear is the simplest type of gear which consists of a cylinder or disk. Its form is not straight-sided, thus, the edge of each tooth is straight and aligned parallel to the axis of rotation. It is the most basic and available type.
As the most common type, spur gears are often used because they are the simplest to design and manufacture. Besides, they are the most efficient. Gear teeth could be manufactured with a wide variety of shapes and profiles.

Nowadays, the involute profile is the most commonly used system for gearing. An involute is a curve that is traced by a point on a taut cord unwinding from a circle, which is called a base circle. The involute is a form of spiral, the curvature of which becomes straighter as it is drawn from a base circle and eventually would become a straight line if drawn far enough.
In recent years, it is usual to set the pressure angle to 20 degrees. In commercial machinery, it is most common to use a portion of an involute curve as the tooth profile. Helical gear is also an important type that can be widely applied. For instance, they have improved tooth strength due to the elongated helical wraparound and increased contact ratio due to the axial tooth overlap. These gears offer a refinement over spur gears. The leading edges of the teeth are not parallel to the axis of rotation, but are set at an angle. Since the gear is curved, this angling makes the tooth shape a segment of a helix. Helical gears can be meshed in parallel or crossed orientations.
When helical gears are operated on other than parallel shafts, the tooth load is concentrated at a point, with the result that very small loads produce very high pressures. The sliding velocity is usually quite high and, combined with the concentrated pressure, may cause galling or excessive wear, especially if the teeth are not well lubricated. For these reasons, the tooth load which may be applied to such drives is very limited and of uncertain value, and is perhaps best determined by trial under actual operating conditions. If one of the gears is made of bronze, the contact area and thereby the load carrying capacity, may be increased under loads which gradually increase to the maximum expected.
