UCAM upped the ante of ‘Make in India’ spirit with gear hobbing machine unit Nimble Machines

Government’s ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign for building ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ may have been a recent call across the country but some Indian companies made it a point long ago to follow the path of self-reliance and pave the path for other companies. Nimble Machines division, a strategic business unit of India’s leading CNC and customized rotary manufacturer UCAM Pvt. Ltd., was one such striking initiative. Rajesh Gawhale, Head - Nimble Machines Division, UCAM Pvt. Ltd. shared the story of the journey and their plans for the Government’s flagship program in conversation with Machine Maker.

The Inception

UCAM, being a Rotary table manufacturer, was looking for a precision gear hobbing machine to produce high-quality Worm Gears. But not many manufacturers were able to offer the quality standard required by UCAM. The few who did have the required quality were not affordable. Thus the 1st gear hobbing machine was born at UCAM in the year 2003, for internal consumption. This one step graduated to the formation of the Nimble Machines division at UCAM to build hi-tech, hi-performance machines to help many other machine tools industry players from the shortage fill in the vacuum in the Indian gear market.

What started as an initiative for internal consumption paved the way for Nimble Machine and gradually UCAM decided to enter into this space to cater to the vacuum in Indian Machine tool Industry for High-performance Gear Hobbing Machines. Today, Nimble Machines division is one of the fast-growing divisions at UCAM, showing steady and good growth prospects. It offers high-performance Gear Hobbing machines with the latest direct drive technology.

Leadership in the Market

The Indian market for gear hobbing machines is divided among a few imported suppliers, a couple of multinational companies operating from India, and few Indian manufacturers. “Last year the new gear hobbing machines market in India was around 30-40 machines. But apart from this, there is another sizable market of used Gear hobbing machines. Customers are forced to go for these used machines and have to compromise on the quality and output, mainly due to affordability reasons,” Mr. Gawale says.

He adds that Nimble Machine is seriously working on this market segment. “With an already good number of machines in the field, Nimble Machine is well accepted by customers and we are confident of becoming number one gear hobbing machine supplier in India within a short time,” he says.
