Xcom 3 Speculation

Not basing this on news or rumors, just some wishes since I hope xcom appears at e3 this year, and I really want a third one.

Biggest new thing: game is from the perspective of the aliens.

It doesn’t seem likely that we lose in Xcom 2. We already lost in Enemy Unknown and it worked well, but losing in Xcom 2 more or less only means the extinction of humanity. But making the aliens into the underdogs? Trying regain control of the planet and beat back that mysterious threat the aliens were running from? That has a lot of potential.

Primary Objective of an alien campaign: prevent apocalyptic cataclysm from still unkown threat (my guess is soul-eating eldritch horrors) by any means necessary (opening opportunity for politics and negotiations for new allies rather than just “kill and loot.”)

Base: since the ocean hideout is destroyed, a space station/mothership or even moon base seems like an ideal location. It can scan the planet for activity and opportunities, and be of a modular design for new facilities and upgrades (giving opportunities to fight off a hostile invasion inside a base YOU made). Of course there would be a handful of essential starter facilities such as: research lab, engineering, command center, and UFO hangar.

Recruitment: unlike Xcom, aliens don’t recruit. Instead they use masterful genetic engineering to craft and breed new soldiers. The research lab proves essential for this as when you kill new enemies in missions and bring the bodies back, you can archive the genetic code and be able to manufactire units of that species. One possible way to upgrade your soldiers (as opposed to experience-based leveling) would be to inject them with new traits from species you’ve catalogued and found ideal traits within. This could open new doors as, for example, non-psionic species suddenly gain the ability to use such cosmic power.

Equipment upgrades: unlike with a human faction, you can’t really have your aliens start with guns and kevlar as they invaded wielding plasma guns and other space-age tech. You could however, reasonably have the aliens start off with modified advent equipment, upgrade that to elerium-based weapons and armor, then perhaps go a step further and use psionically enhanced weapons and armor. And with so many species potentially at your disposal, it’ll be critical to budget resources in prioritizing who gets what upgrades.

Missions: with the eldritch apocalypse on the horizon, it presents a timer similar to the avatar project from Xcom. However, rather than an instant game over, perhaps it adds a daunting level of difficulty in all future missions as the untold threat emerges and unleashes chaos. Leading up to and after this, there are a number of potential operations to undertake. For example, abductions, where-in you have identified a VIP for some reason or another (perhaps they are a scientist and you need their expertise to accelerate R&D), and need to send a team in to capture them. Unlike in Xcom 2, failure to capture the VIP means you’ve failed that mission and lost a potentially vital new member of your “team.” That being only one of the many new and/or familiar mission scenarios.

Squads: in Xcom 2 and Enemy Within, you start off sending in 4-person teams, eventually upgrading to 6. For the aliens, this may not work so well. Perhaps instead the aliens have a certain point limit, and each unit, depending on species, has varying point levels like in the multiplayer. As you may’ve guessed, to upgrade your “squad” size, you must purchase the necessary upgrade to increase your point total for missions. This can really sell home the feeling in the late-game stages that you’re re-invading the Earth for the aliens.

Haven’t made a long post like this in a while. But those are some spit-balled ideas on how an alien’s perspective Xcom might play out. Really hope firaxis isn’t done with the franchise quite yet. I want to see where else they can take it
