A Review of 'No Hard Feelings' (2023)

Raunchy comedy can be a hit or miss. However, since I like Jennifer Lawrence, it would be stupid not to give this movie a viewing. Surprises from this movie include a few jokes I genuinely laughed out loud at and a scene featuring a butt-naked J-Law fighting three people on a beach. So, there's that piece of randomness to walk away with. The movie's story is the traditional three-act structure, which might have a few predictable plot points. But it is still entertainable at the end of the day. This movie is definitively rated for an older audience, as it is not for everyone. Although the jokes can be juvenile, low-brow, and might have been conjured up by a teenager in high school.

No Hard Feelings (2023) is about a thirty-something Mantauk townie named Maddie Barker, portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence. From the movie's beginning, she struggles to pay the property taxes on the home she inherited from her deceased mother while her vehicle is hauled away by her ex-boyfriend, a tow truck driver. She clearly states the necessity for retaining her auto so she can continue to earn money as a rideshare driver in between shifts as a bartender at a harborside restaurant. In rebuttal, her ex-boyfriend insinuates she fears commitment in a long-term relationship. Thus begins the premise for the start of her character arc in the movie.

Along comes the resolution to her problem, a hand-me-down used vehicle that will be bestowed upon her as a form of payment by a couple who fear their son will go to college as an introverted virgin. They want her to do what is necessary to get their son to become more sociable and confident. What follows afterward would be a slew of lewd jokes and situations that will eventually lead to character development and growth for Maddie. Percy, the shy son, is the only primary obstruction that hinders her from getting a replacement car.

The movie is directed by Gene Stupnitsky, who also serves as the co-writer of its screenplay. His previous credits include directing the 2017 raunchy comedy Good Boys, helming a few episodes of The Office for NBC television, and writing several comedy movies like Year One (2009) and Bad Teacher (2011).

By the end of the day, No Hard Feelings exceeded what I anticipated when I first sat down in the movie theater to watch it. Fans of raunchy comedies should give this movie a try. It will be worth your time.
