What a painful day we have had. We traveled 72 miles and it took 7:20 you do the calcs average of 10 miles an hours, we have had 3 police escorts, one fall, one road closed for an hour, miles of road that we would not call a farm track, and yes we are on the KKH. To top it all off the Hotel has no power and will not turn on their generator until it goes dark!

So we got up as usual at 6:00 and got the bikes sorted we had breakfast in our room as suggest by the waiter, then we set off, leaving Manshera was a little slow in places but not so bad, although it seemed to go on forever, probably because it was so slow, it took us 30 mins to get 3 miles.

Anyway after we left the urban sprawl we entered into to great countryside and some reasonable roads for a few miles. Only a few miles though. The driving here is as bad if not worse than it was in India, and this is where Carol came a cropper, some idiot wanted to look at the bike so screamed alongside her on the way into a bend, there were cars coming the other way so they pulled in making Carol break hard, unfortunately it was down hill and there was dust and gravel, not a good combination, down Carol went. The driver that caused this just drove off without a care in the world! Nice! Luckily Carol is ok more her pride being hurt than anything physical. We recovered Poppy and got her on the right side of the road pointing the right way. Unfortunately Poppy had lost the drivers side mirror and has broken a significant piece from the windshield. We sat down for a few mins to let Carol regain her composure, and let the adrenaline die down. Along came the police force asking where we were going, then they said we had to wait for them and they would escort us to the next town.

So now we have an armed garde, we went for about 5 mins then they pulled over, next force’s jurisdiction, but no one turned up so they said just go on, lol. After a miserable ride over dirt gravel pot holes, etc. we turn a corner and we can see about .5 of a mile of standing traffic.

We turn off the engines and wait, in the baking heat, and wait and wait. Over an hour to fix the problem. Well the problem was the Idiotic driving style, a bridge was under construction and there was only one lane of gravel and potholes to traverse, but oh no, they tried to get 2 lines each way and no one could reverse out as the remaining vehicles were also still jostling round each other, so basically we sat for an hour and a half because they refuse to be polite and refuse to give way to each other on the roads.

When we finally get clear of this mess, we cross a bridge and there is a police check point, we have passed hundreds of these in India and Pakistan and just get waved on by or a nod as they take interest in the bikes. Not this time, we are pulled over, passports, bike details all recorded and then we are told to wait for an escort, this time we have a blues and twos escort, and make some good progress which is what we needed, they soon handover to a motorcycle escort that we drop as he passes our hotel. Whilst we was on the ride with the escort we were coming into a bend I was in front of Guy when all of a sudden a car came round the bend and then seem to go straight towards me. I’ve no idea how I did it but I swerved the bike so it would miss the car but it very narrowly missed my pannier, what a day. But on a positive note I got a text off Lox (my youngest son) that he had passed his mod 1 so a few more tears but these were tears of joy.

That’s todays riding over, we need a shower food and to look at the bikes before tomorrow, which promises to be another long day, just hope for better roads as they are just no fun and are very tiring.

Well the Hotel has no power, and we are promised power in 30 mins, and we are promised it again in an hour, then we are promised it at 6:30 after dusk they will turn on the generator. It has just come on now at 6:36, and I can now see what I a typing.

We have checked the oil levels and all good, still losing some, but it’s just the heat and I guess the oil being thin getting where it would not in the UK. Lubricated the chains before tomorrow, and swapped Daisy’s mirror onto Poppy, struggling with what to do about the windscreen, but sure we will hatch a plan in the next day or so. I asked some people near by if there was a bike shop near. They said not for your bike, but I convinced them to let me know if there was one, well one lad sets off and gestures to me to follow, we end up in a back street where there are 100 or so bikes being blinged up, I’m introduced to the main man and ask him if he might have a mirror with the same thread as mine, which I’m clutch in hand. Off he goes comes back a few mins later with some thing that looks good enough. I ask him how much and tell him I’m of for the cash. He thrusts them in my hands tells me they are 300PKR about £1.5 but I’m his guest. Needless to say I do go back and take him the monies, so now Daisy has a black left mirrow and a silver right mirror. but at least she has two.
