Before Draco left, he paused, turning back to look at Carewyn.
“I won’t forget that,” he said. “What you did.”
He didn’t need to articulate what he meant.
“And I swear – when we’re both done at Hogwarts, we’ll meet again, Cromwell. And when we do, I’ll be the greatest wizard ever – greater than you could ever be.”
Despite the arrogance in his expression, Draco was still grinning from ear to ear in a kind of vicious determination.
Carewyn’s blue eyes grew a little smaller as she smirked in return.
“Good ambition. Just keep in mind – there are many ways to be ‘great.’”
With an offhand scoff, Draco turned on his heel and followed his father, not fully able to bite back the smile still clinging to his lips.
~“Meet the Malfoys” Sidequest, rewritten by @carewyncromwell
x~x~x~x
After the Second Wizarding War, no one quite knew what to do with the Malfoys. It was well-known that they were aligned with the Death Eaters, and yet it was also well-known that just about all the remaining Death Eaters who remained loyal to Voldemort after his death wanted nothing to do with them. And so, when they were brought to Azkaban to await their trial, there was a feeling of discomfort -- one that made everyone at the Ministry and prison treat them with kid gloves, and yet prompted just about no one to reach out to support them.
One exception was Harry Potter, who volunteered to speak for Draco and Narcissa Malfoy at their trials. Another, surprisingly enough, was the main prosecutor in the cases against ex-Death Eaters -- up-and-coming magical lawyer Carewyn Cromwell.
Draco had been sitting in his cell, drowning in his own thoughts. There were no more dementors inside the prison, so his only company was the endlessly echoing silence pounding in his ears. He didn’t know where his parents were in the prison, and it troubled him greatly. Still, at least the guards had been decent enough to put several cells between him and Alecto Carrow and Walden Macnair, who were the only other prisoners locked up on that floor. It was bad enough that the two still swapped mindless conspiracies about Voldemort’s death being a “false-flag operation” and hurled blood-related insults at people as they passed by.
One day, however, the gloom of the floor was disrupted by the arrival of an Abraxan Winged Horse, which soared into the room down to the floor before galloping down the hall.
“What the -- ?” Draco could hear Macnair’s voice say a ways away.
The Patronus slowed to a leisurely trot, finally coming to stand in front of Draco’s cell. Draco uneasily got to his feet, staring at it, as its pupil-less silvery eyes bore into him. Then, a moment later, the sound of heels lightly clapping against the floor broke the silence of the floor.
“You!” Draco heard Alecto’s voice snarl from her cell near the top of the hall. “What are you doing here, Cromwell?”
“Not visiting you, Alecto,” said a very soft, cold female voice. “Your trial date isn’t for another two weeks.”
Draco stiffened abruptly. That couldn’t be --
“Filthy, bastard whelp!” Alecto’s voice snarled, but the heels had already started to migrate down the halls away from her. Clearly their owner had no interest arguing with her.
The heels clapped louder and louder as they migrated down the long hall, all the way down to the end where Draco’s cell was. As the heels’ owner approached, the Patronus faded away in a delicate puff of white smoke, leaving her alone to look at Draco through his cell door.
“...Hello, Draco,” the woman said lowly.
Draco felt a painful lump crop up in his throat.
“...Carewyn Cromwell.”
The witch once called “Cursebreaker Cromwell” hadn’t changed that much since her school days. Her hair was much shorter now, cut enough that it only lightly brushed her shoulders, and she was dressed in very crisp black dress robes with a camel-colored leather bag on her hip, but her strong posture and bright red lipstick were just the same.
The Ministry’s chief prosecutor appeared very stoic and grim as she considered Draco -- for a moment, her almond-shaped blue eyes were so piercing and penetrating, he felt like he was facing Dumbledore again, and it forced him to break eye contact immediately.
“You won’t be able to look into my mind,” he said rather harshly.
Carewyn’s eyes became a little smaller. “No, I won’t. Your Occlumency is very impressive.”
There was a silence. Draco kept his gaze pointedly away, feeling nauseous beyond reason.
“...when we’re both done at Hogwarts, we’ll meet again, Cromwell...”
His own words echoing back to him made him feel like he was choking back slugs.
Some great wizard you turned out to be! he thought bitterly. Instead you’re this pathetic coward, locked up like some animal...
Carewyn’s eyes trailed over Draco’s pale face for a moment, considering him even though it was turned away.
“Your parents send their love,” she murmured after a moment.
Draco straightened up abruptly.
“You’ve seen my parents?” he demanded.
He’d had his mouth open, ready to demand where they were, how they were, if they were all right -- but in an instant, he stopped himself. He couldn’t let her see him desperate.
Carewyn, however, seemed to understand immediately, and her eyes softened with compassion.
“Your father is just downstairs of you, and your mother is a few floors up. I spoke to both of them, before coming to meet you.”
“What about?” Draco’s eyes narrowed.
“Your trial,” Carewyn answered. “Yours is first, of the three of you. I figured they ought to know.”
“Awfully charitable instinct,” Draco said suspiciously, “for seemingly no reason.”
Carewyn raised her eyebrows.
“Don’t play innocent -- I know how much you hate my father, Cromwell,” said Draco. “How much you’ve always hated him. Father’s more than said as much, at home. He always knew how mad you were whenever he’d visit the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, however much you tried to hide it.”
Carewyn crossed her arms, her eyes narrowing slightly too.
“I won’t deny it,” she said dryly. “Nor will I deny that I have never liked your father as a person -- it’d be a bit hard to, considering he was on good terms with the man who tried to threaten and blackmail my brother, mother and me into rejoining their toxic, abusive family. Not to mention both he and your mother raised you to think people should be persecuted and killed for their heritage.”
“The Mudbloods were destroying our way of life!” Draco snarled defensively.
“I do believe this War has proven which side was really destroying lives, Draco,” said Carewyn coldly.
Draco’s mouth broke into a humorless smirk. “Oh sure -- that’s why you’re setting about destroying all of our lives now, right, Prosecutor Cromwell? Turnabout’s fair play, isn’t it?”
“Quit playing the victim -- it’s very unbecoming,” Carewyn said in such a pitiless voice, it was like she was trying to channel Snape. “I realize your parents let you get away with doing whatever you wanted at home, but I’m pretty sure your teachers didn’t coddle you so much at school that you don’t know what consequences are. You broke the law, Draco. You joined a terrorist organization that launched a coup against our lawfully elected officials in an effort to persecute Muggle-borns and anyone else they deemed their enemies. You’ve used the Imperius Curse without prompting or coercion. You made two ill-conceived murder attempts that resulted in serious injury for two Hogwarts students. You conspired with members of that aforementioned terrorist group to help them infiltrate Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which then resulted in wanton destruction, countless injuries, and the death of Albus Dumbledore. As a member of that terrorist group, you were complicit in the deaths of nearly a thousand people, including children. It’s both pointless and stupid to get upset about the Ministry wanting to hold you accountable for that -- particularly when our version of ‘accountable’ is far kinder than what your Death Eater compatriots did to those people they didn’t like.”
Draco looked incredibly surly and uncomfortable. His gray eyes fell down to the ground, unable to meet Carewyn’s, before he actively turned his back on her, retreating into the back of his cell.
“You don’t have to tell me I screwed up,” he said bitterly. “I’m more than aware of that.”
Carewyn regarded Draco for a moment, her expression still rather stoic. Then, after a moment, she spoke a bit more softly.
“...Chester Davies has been assigned your case. He’s a good man -- he’ll make sure the court hears a balanced account of what you’ve gone through.”
Draco didn’t turn around.
“And my parents?”
“The Wizengamot hasn’t assigned them counsel yet. Fortunately your mother won’t be tried until August, and your father September. I’ve put in a good word for my coworker Manon Walsh, to represent them -- she’s an excellent attorney.”
Draco looked over his shoulder, his gaze almost wary. “...Why?”
Carewyn raised her eyebrows again.
“You’re the prosecutor,” said Draco, as though it were obvious. “And you hate my parents. Why would you do anything to help them?”
“Because it’s the right thing to do,” Carewyn said simply. When Draco raised his eyebrow distrustfully, she added, “Your parents have sabotaged themselves enough already, Draco -- they certainly don’t need my help. And although you seem to think that I’m ‘set on destroying your lives’...” her voice was incredibly cool, “...all I want is proper justice for those people who were hurt by the Death Eaters’ reign of terror. And from what I understand, your family wasn’t completely shielded from that either.”
Draco considered Carewyn for a very, very long moment. He seemed almost lost for words, however much he was clearly searching for them.
Feeling some pity, Carewyn brought a hand up to rest on the bars.
“I heard about what you did, at Malfoy Manor,” she said softly. “How you resisted identifying Harry Potter, to your parents and Bellatrix. That couldn’t have been easy to do.”
Draco looked away mulishly. “Don’t coddle me. You don’t need to praise my cowardice, just because it helped Potter out...”
“I don’t think it was cowardly,” Carewyn said gently. “I’ve heard second-hand about how much you and Potter always hated each other...and from the moment we first met, it’s been beyond clear how much you love your father.”
Her eyes softened.
“...I had someone at school...who I hated, the same way Potter and you hated each other. She was my dormmate -- yet we were constantly at each other’s throats, from the very beginning of first year. I hated her because she was a bully. She hated me because I would beat her at everything.”
Something flickered in Draco’s expression.
“Eventually, though, we ended up mending fences, and we learned we could actually work together for the greater good,” said Carewyn. “But that doesn’t mean it still wouldn’t be really, really hard for me to side with her over my own family. If my brother had put me in the position to identify Merula the way you had to for Potter...even if I wouldn’t have been able to, just like you weren’t...I know it would’ve still broken my heart, to lie to Jacob.”
Her red lips curled up in the very smallest of smiles.
“I think what you did was really quite brave.”
Draco stared at Carewyn over his shoulder for a long moment. Then, turning slowly back around, he hesitantly approached the bars, his eyes locked on hers.
“...You’re not blocking me from your mind very well,” he said uneasily.
Carewyn smiled a bit more wryly. “I’ve never been as skilled at Occlumency. What do you see?”
“Merula Snyde, taunting you about your brother being dead. This guy with long, curly hair and red robes hugging you in a room full of empty paintings. And...” his mouth actually turned up in a very small smile, “...you teaching me how to use Averte Sactum.”
Carewyn smiled, and soon Draco was too.
“I used that in my first duel, you know,” he said almost proudly.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. Lockhart arranged this Dueling Club meeting for us second years, and I knocked Potter right off his feet.”
Carewyn covered her face with her hand. “I still can’t believe you all got Gilderoy Lockhart teaching you Defense Against the Dark Arts...”
“He was a complete idiot,” said Draco with a rather big grin.
“He always was.”
Carewyn hesitated, before reaching into her bag and fetching out a big, brightly colored box of tiny Peppermint Toads. Judging by its broken seal, it looked like it had already been opened by security.
“I brought you these from Honeydukes,” Carewyn explained. “They just reopened. Azkaban has never been particularly good at keeping its prisoners well-fed, so I thought something sweet might take the edge off. I got chocolate thinking of the dementors, but well...”
She gestured to the empty, dementor-less hallway.
“...I haven’t been here, since they left.”
Draco accepted the box through the bars. “Thanks.”
Carewyn smiled slightly as she closed her purse again with a soft snap.
“Chester should be checking in on you tomorrow,” she said. “I’d recommend being fully honest with him -- outlining a proper defense is a lot easier when the attorney has a full picture of what happened, especially when time is limited. Then he’ll do his part to make sure the copy of the picture he creates for the court is sympathetic.”
Draco nodded. “Understood.”
Carewyn nodded in return before turning to leave.
“Cromwell.”
She looked over her shoulder at him.
“I won’t forget this,” he said seriously. “What you’re doing. And I swear...if I get out of here, this won’t be the last you’ll hear of me. I will be great -- in my own way. You’ll see.”
Carewyn’s eyes softened.
“I’m more than sure of that, Draco Malfoy.”

Abaixo do read more estão as conexões plotadas, as pré-conexões e conexões desejadas do Wolf.
good influence.
(any)
guilty pleasure.
(any)

268 Directors and the end of the blog
This post marks the end of the Ask a Director experiment. I’m so grateful to all who have contributed, supported and engaged with it over the past six and a half years.
This blog was started at a time when I felt incredibly alone in the directing field. I had always been taught that a director operates solo, that it was a lonely career and above all, it was based on scarcity. This was a style of working and living that didn't fit for me. I wanted to talk to other directors about their practice and thoughts about the field, both national and international. This blog was started as a way to connect, to uplift other directors and to create a conversation about the changing field and practices.
It's surpassed all of these goals and brought me more joy than I can name.
I'm now at a moment where my practice and advocacy are taking different and exciting paths and it's time for me to put this site to bed. I remain committed to uplifting other directors, to talking about the practice, to flattening hierarchies, to opening doors for new ways of working, and leading rehearsal rooms, companies, and classrooms away from silos and vacuums. Featuring these 268 different directors was just the beginning.
I encourage you all to hire them (and others), advocate for them (and others) and choose to work in a system that values connection and generosity.
