This album, released in March 1977 by Columbia Records, not only expanded the bounds of jazz but also became a commercial…

Weather Report: Elegant People, Montreux 1976
The 1976 Weather Report was an amazing band with Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, Alex Acuna and Manolo Badrena. I remember that year, when the band rolled into Montreux, Joe was refusing to play if the group was videotaped. After going back and forth for an hour or two with festival promoter Claude Nobs, Joe conceded and we’re all better off that he did.

A Moment of Magic ...
... from the 2011 Marciac Jazz Festival in France. It features veteran piano giant Ahmad Jamal, 81 at the time. He is still touring today, and continues to enchant audiences with the lightness of his touch and the precision and inventiveness of his playing.
The true hero here though must be Yusef Lateef. He was one of the greatest sax and flute players jazz has known. When this recording was made, Lateef - who passed away in 2013 - was 91 years old. This performance is just awesome.
Ahmad Jamal, piano Yusef Lateef, flute James Cammack, bass Herlin Riley, drums Manolo Badrena, percussion
