Her willingness to paint him as a vagina lover. Thatâs all.

âTo Clear Self,â The Globe and Mail. May 17, 1941. Page 17. ---- Burns Gets Five-Year Term, Concurrent, on Safe-Robbery Charge --- OFFICER COMMENDED ---- Brantford, May 16 - (Special) - Lawrence Burns, Windsor, was sentence tonight by His Honor Judge D. J. Cowan to five years in Kingston Penitentiary for robbing the safe at the McHutchion bakery here last Jan. 19. The term will be concurrent with five years he got at Peterborough for safe-breaking, and fifteen months for attempted jail break.
Sentence of Burns wound up more than five hours of wordy battling the accused carried on in an attempt to clear himself. He was his own counsel. His chief argument centred around a statement he made to Detective John Nimmo, Toronto, that he helped rob the McHutchion safe. Burns argued he made the statement because inducement was offered and the statement was no admissable.
âThis man Burns is too clever to be induced to make any statement against his own interests, unless it was true,â Judge Cowan said. âIn fact, I am impressed by the cleverness of the accused in his own defencse.â
Burnsâ chief witnesses were Louis Gallow, William Bradt, and Thomas Nicholls, all facing five-year terms for the McHutchion job.
âThese three are as fine a set of safe-breakers as Iâve seen in many years,â Judge Cowan said.
Planned Another Break Burns admitted he signed the statement for Detective Nimmo, hoping to get transferred to Brantford, where he might attempt another jail-brak. He had looked over the jail here once while he was on bail, he said.
He said Gallow, Bradt, and Nicholls had been on ânumerous expeditions of safe-breaking, but the persons who cracked the McHutchion safe were rank amateurs.â
âWhat would be the right method, just in case I ever needed to know?â the Judge asked him.
âI donât want to part with the secrets. I find it a pretty good paying job,â Burns answered.â
âWell, in any case, I couldnât use the information on the Court House,â said His Honor.
Mannis Frankel, Toronto lawyer, who had acted for Burns, at Peterborough, appeared as a witness as âa friend of the Court,â not for Burns, he said. He had dropped Burns, Frankel said, because he understood Burns had an idea of breaking jail here. But the accused should not receive any extra penalty because he decided to plead not guilty and defend himself, Frankel said.
Calls For Table. Burns was on his feet early in the trial asking for fifteen minutes to examine the Crown witness. Then he called for a paper, pencil, and a table. A press table was pushed up to the prisoners dock.
Burns said he had been held incommunicado was not prepared to go on.
âHe knows all about this case and has known for months,â E. R. Read, Crown Attorney said. Police Constable Frank Tomlin, who took the number of a car owned by John Fairchild, used in the robbery, and provided the clue that ended with the charging of the quartet by Detectives George Kerr and Charles Kellas, was commended by Judge Cowan.
âThe culprits in this case might never have been brought to trial had it not been for the very fine work of Constable Tomlin. I want to commend him. Without his work, there might have been no clue, even,â Judge Cowan said.
When he stood for sentence Burns said he had been âpretty goodâ for the past year until he got caught on the Peterborough job.
Must Protect Public âI donât agree with you,â Judge Cowan said, holding up his long record. âThe public must be protected from you and your type.â
Fairchild said he loaned his car to Gallow in Hamilton, and Gallow drove away with Burns and Nicholls.
âDid you guarantee us we wouldnât be brought to trial at Brantford?â Burns asked Detective Nimmo. âNo,â the detective said.
When defense was called, Burns said his witnesses were going to admit the crime. Mannif Frankel was just about to stop into the box.
âIn that case, I object right now,â Frankel said.
âWell, not all of them,â Burns amended.
Nicholls, Bradt, and Gallow were brought in singly, handcuffed. Nicholls said he âcoachedâ Burns in his statement. The detective had promised a concurrent term, he said.
To Burns, Gallow said he couldnât remember much of what happened.
âMy mindâs a fog,â Gallow said.
âMaybe youâve got a cold in the brain,â Burns said, pointing to Gallowâs prison hair-cut.
Burns insisted he had given the statement to the detective âin hope of reward.â
âI prefer the word of the officers as to what took place,â the judge told him.

"Yeah, I used to say that, didn't I? Too bad neither you nor Dwight heard the words of an old, foolish man." the smoker scoffed. Both had gotten too close to the Killers and now what had become of them? They became what they used to hate. The weeper had asked the opd mannif he hated him when they first crossed paths. Bill answerd no, he didn't hate him and this was the truth. All he felt was dissapointed and betrayed. But he could never hate his son. The Smoker on the other hand? He wanted to hate the Weeper, he wanted to. But he couldn't.
"Jesus Christ, Kid. You're more simple-minded than I ever thought." The Killer muttered when Spirit came to her conclusions. "You trust too easily. How many times do you want to repeat your mistake?" he asked, voice rising. How could she be so blind? Trusting any of them "None of us likes visitors and yet you're here. Didn't dear Doctor warn you about me too?" there was a certain amount of mockery in his voice.
When Spirit asked about the Weeper and his dominion the muscles on the Smokers jaw moved relentlessly, before he finally snapped "I'm not going to speak fer the Weeper! Why don't you ask him? Or maybe use your goddamn bird brain for once in yer life? Why is every realm how it is? Why is the Hillbillies a farm? The Doctors a mental institute? The Clowns a carnival? Mine a battlefield?" The answer was easy: Home field of advantage. They knew those places better than their pockets, it was their home.

spiritofflamesâ:
Between her sobs, the woman tried to speak. âYouâre right, Dwight was the only thing that would have lead y- Bill into a trap like this. But did you see him again?â Spirit needed to know if Dwight was okay. But at least now she knew, where she can find Dwight, or whatâs left of him. How could she have been so blind to all of this? None of the older killers were giving her answers or only vague ones.
It wasnât quite the trap. The Entity just proposed a bargain, Bill was to see his friends again, if he would work for it. Of course the old man knew he would give up a big part of his own free will and that he had to hunt down the others but it was a bitter Pill the soldier was ready to swallow, just for getting back at this monstrosity for a single brief moment. And that he did by ripping out one of its claws when he had the opportunity.
Groaning, the smoker went down on one knee next to Spirit âFinally sunk in, eh? Hard when it hits, right here, hm?â he taunted her while he pointed to her chest where her heart was located. Then he nodded âImagine how hard it hits when you have no clue and meet him in a trial. Yeah, I saw him, alright.â he muttered, eyes trailing of into the distance while he remembered their first encounter after Dwight was turned.
âHe is called the Weeper now, the MacMillan Mine shafts are his realm.â With another groan he sat down in the dust next to spirit. But was he okay? Was she okay? Did the Smoker look okay? How could be anyone okay in these circumstances? âIf you have so much freedom, why havenât you found him yet?â the Killer asked, lost in thought âCould it be that someone .. or something didnât want you to find him? Maybe ya arenât the âMasters favourite pet.ââ a dry laugh left the rough throat of the former Soldier. The favored Killer of the Entity would for ever be the Macmillan heir.
âYeah it hurts. How was I so naive, I really thought when I find you guys all will go back to normal.â Spirit said, still slumped over. All this times she trusted the killers to tell her the truth. And she never questioned why Herman wasnât allowing her to enter the MacMillan estate. He even kept of feeding her ideas on where Dwight might be. Suddenly the woman laughed. âNever trust your enemy, didnât you teach us this lesson at the fire?â Spirit asked, still not looking up.
âSo the Weeper. I guess he made his choice by choosing to become a part of the Trappers realm.â Spirit sighed. âHerman warned me about entering the estate. He said the Trapper doesnât like visitors. I guess I have to talk to him when I get ho- I mean back to our realm.â Spirit was no longer in a playing mood, no she really was furious. Usually she would go into empty realm to let out steam, this time however, the Doctor would get a taste of his experiments.
But the woman still had questions. Spirit wanted to ask Dwi- the Weeper himself but she knew she couldnât stand that sight. âDo you know why he choose the mines? Isnât it pitch black down there? I canât imagine that he sees very much down there.â Her feelings were clawing at her heart, she always trusted Bill, so maybe she could trust the Smoker too? No, too many killers already lied to her. There was no way she would repeat her mistakes again. As badly as she wanted to cry into his jacket, like she done when they came from their first trial together, she just sat there. Pushing away all her old feelings for Bill, for he was dead.
