South African Rugby Champions Go Back-To-Back
youtube
I'll admit off the bat, that I am the most casual rugby fan in the world, and by many fans standards, I am the worst type of fan because I am a Springboks supporter.
Don't let that take away from what this South African team just accomplished though, and to help you understand the context under which this team is representing the country, is a task that can't be accomplished in one blog post.
South Africa is a country with an economy that is dying and the gap in wealth inequality is getting bigger and bigger, with an infastructure that is falling apart, and a government unable to manage the administrative, financial headaches of governance.
Basically, these Springboks are the only good thing happening in South Africa.
Packed in to the pre-meal, and way before any of these current players was ever a Springbok, is the history of South Africa itself and what the Springboks represented for the ruling Apartheid government pre-1994, and the liberation of Black South Africans since.
This is not a piece to sway people in to believing in the Springboks as a story of racial intergration and tranformation.
Rather something to help you understand the kind of hurdles every player on the team deals with, and the amount of personal discipline it takes to always put the team and winning first.
youtube
In the years to come, books will be written about how these guys had to pull together even in the most trying of times, and Siya Kholisi as the captain of a team that has accomplished the greatest feat in the sport's history.
To help you understand what this team has accomplished, South Africa came in to the 2023 Rugby World Cup as defending champions after winning the 2019 World Cup, only lost 1 game the entire tournament, and won our last 3 games all by 1 point margins.
This is not a Rugby team. This is sporting greatness and excellence. They'll go down as legends of the sport. All of them, every member of both the 2019 and 2023 squads.
Every one of these players had big moments in big games and situations where we absolutely needed it.
Handre Pollard's cool headedness was evident throughout the tournament, with his kick to win the semi-final against England being his most immense.
Eben Etzebeth setting the tone with physicality, always promptly followed by Mbongeni Mbonambi, Franco Mostert and Duane Vermeulen, Ox Nche, Deon Fourie and Kwagga Smith, and this group changed the game in that semi-final.
Pieter-Steph Du Toit's man of the match performance in the final was arguably the best any Springbok has ever played in a final. Cheslin Kolbe's charge down and block against France. Manie Libbok's sublime no-look kick against Scotland.
Everyone had big moments or big performances at key times.
youtube
I have grown attached to this team in a way I have never been attached to a Rugby team.
South Africa's 1995 World Cup victory represented the intention to change with the inclusion of the legendary Chester Williams. In 2007 it was a story of how that change had bred a new generation of winners represented by Byran Habana. The 2019 World Cup in Japan represented a transformation complete with the champions being captained by a Black player for the first time.
This however is not a chapter of the story that needs a transformation narrative.
As a group these players have transcended that. They represent the pinnacle of the sport. The highest level of achievement possible, and our heach coach Rassie Erasmus, the man who masteminded both our victories, all the while challenging the sports's conventions, pushing boundraries, and always keeping the Boks one step ahead.
Growing up Bryan Habana was the most recognisable player in the sport, and I even have a photograph I took of him on my Instagram, but this group, and this captain, with those forwards and those wings, yeah they've now surpassed any South African team, and that's no easy thing to do.
Even more difficult than that is restoring some feeling of national pride at a time when it's becoming harder to create reasons for that.
Thank you to the Boks, they will never be forgotten.

Before I choose a lineup of racing drivers I should probably explain rugby in the most basic way I can.
There are 23 players in a team. 15 starting players and a bench of eight. For this team we are going with a 5-3 split, because they would not survive a 7-1 split. This refers to the substitute players for the front players and the back players. Why specific subs? This is because players have to train to be part of the scrum and their different positions. Also, the fronts tend to be bigger and the backs tend to be smaller.
If examples are given, they would most often be South African, because my heart is green and gold💛💚 also this is a very long post. Feel free to use my inbox for questions ☀️
The forwards
1 Loose-head prop
Front row of scrum. A very physical position where they have to physically drive back the opposition. Also lifts players during a lineout.
2 Hooker
Front row of scrum. Determines the timing of the scrum. Uses his feet to kick the ball backwards and out of the scrum. Throws the ball in at lineouts.
3 Tight-head prop
Front row of scrum. A very physical position where they have to physically drive back the opposition. Also lifts players during a lineout.
4 Lock (second row)
Supports the front row of the scrum. Target men during the lineout. Also tend to be aggressive. An amazing example of this position is Eben Etzebeth.
5 Lock (second row)
Supports the front row of the scrum. Target men during the lineout. Also tend to be aggressive.
6 Blindside Flanker
Tends to be bigger than an open side flanker. At the blindside of the scrum (closer to the touchline than the open pitch). You usually find these guys in the center of chaos. They make big tackles and big carries.
7 Open side Flanker
Smaller and faster flanker. They play at the far side of the touchline, towards the center of the field. Very important during open play, they also make some tackles and carries.
8 Eightman
Only players allowed to pick up the ball in the scrum. Forms the back row along with 6 and 7. Usually a good runner to make up some distance after a scrum.
The backs
9 Scrum-half
The link between the forwards and the backs. Controls the ball during a scrum, ruck or maul, by inserting the ball (scrum) or extracting (ruck or maul) it. Must be quick and decisive. Usually on the smaller side (good example of this is Faf de Klerk).
10 Flyhalf
Most influential player. Responsible for kicking conversions and other penalties. This player can make or break a team. Also in charge of the back line and coordinates offences. Does box kicks and kicks towards the other team's quarters for a lineout. If you want to see a perfect box kick in action, check out Manie Libbok for South Africa against Scotland.
11 Left Wing
Plays on the wide side of the field. Last line of defence. Also very important in offence. These guys tend to run down the side of the field for tries. Part of the backline.
12 inside centre
Stands close to the fly-half. Strong runners. They run vertical lines. They find gaps in the opponent's defences and draw them away from the backline. Must be good at tackling for a quick defence.
13 outside centre
Faster than the inside centre. Must be ready to make a break for the line. They run vertical lines. They find gaps in the opponent's defences and draw them away from the backline. Must be good at tackling for a quick defence.
14 Right wing
Plays on the wide side of the field. Last line of defence. Also very important in offence. These guys tend to run down the side of the field for tries. Part of the backline.
15 Full back
Receives deep kicks from the opposition. This position is the closest possible to that of a sweeper. Must be comfortable in the sky to catch high balls and to intercept. A tough position for a very athletic player. An example of this is Cheslin Kolbe.
Very basic overview
Scrums
A video (1)(2) explaining better than I ever could.
Lineouts
Another video.
Mauls and rucks
Videos to make the post shorter.
How to score points
Points are scored in a few ways. A Try, which is 7 points. This is when players put the ball down behind the goal posts.
A conversion, which is 2 points. This happens after a try and the position is determined by where the ball is put down. The kick is taken in line of the position the try is scored from the dashed line.
A Penalty Kick, which is 3 points. Awarded when another team infringed on rules. Called a free kick for small offences. If the penalty is awarded inside the range of the posts, a kick is usually taken.
A drop-goal, which is 3 points. When a player kicks the ball over the goal posts during play.
#rugby can be complicated#but it is fun to watch#it is also very dynamic which means that all the players must be good defensively and offensively#i did not really discuss the rules#because it's not too important for selecting a team#also i would love talking about rugby more (specifically the springboks)#it's okaybif you don't know what a ruck is nobody does these days

as a south african who does not really care about rugby usually i am fucking gutted rn omg. literally what the fuckkkk 😭 but i think ireland played v well, they deserved that win. and at least we didn't lose by a humiliating margin ...
ireland was exceptional and the thing is south africa did really, REALLY well in so many places and COULD have won were it not for all these fucking missed kicks!!!!!! like do you not have kickers??? de klerk and libbok are excellent players and are fucking terrible at kicking, and why the fuck do they keep letting attempt to transform when he misses every time!!! he's good at other parts but he drops the ball (literally and figuratively) on that one every fucking time!!!! the bokke must have missed eight points in total, more than enough to beat ireland....... legit fucking gutting, what an excellent match that's sullied by the springboks not having covered an essential and basic role in rugby.
#like legit south africa played like what they are: the currently reigning world champions#kinda fell apart by the end but also they were clearly at their limit#exceptional defense too#eli talks#rugby

We all grew up in a country were playing in a Test match against the All Blacks was the one game that we all desired to experience.

[ad_1] JOHANNESBURG :Flyhalf Manie Libbok scored a breakaway try against the run of play to secure South Africa a bruising 22-21 victory over Argentina and earn a second-place finish in the Rugby Championship at Ellis Park on Saturday. The Springboks had to withstand heavy Argentine pressure, some of their own making through poor execution, but managed to grind out the win as they also scored tries through lock Eben Etzebeth and centre Damian de Allende.Argentina were in the contest all the way but battled to break down the resolute home defence and got tries late on through wing Mateo Carreras and replacement Gonzalo Bertranou as the visitors pushed for what would have been a first ever win in Johannesburg.New Zealand claimed the Rugby Championship trophy earlier on Saturday with a comprehensive 38-7 victory over Australia in Melbourne but the Boks' victory sees them end second, with Argentina in third. "It was up and down, there were times we felt we were really dominant with ball in hand, but then there were times we lost it," Bok captain Duane Vermeulen said at the post-match presentation. "It was (poor) discipline, it just did not work for us, but we walk away with the win and we are thankful for that. There is work to be done before we head to the World Cup."Under coach Michael Cheika, Argentina have beaten England at Twickenham, New Zealand in Christchurch and Australia in Sydney, but fell just short this time.South Africa, who had made nine changes going into the game, had the better of the set-piece and dominated the breakdown, but were at times unable to get out of their half against relentless Argentine pressure."In terms of heart and passion, this team is never in doubt, how we fight for these colours," Argentina captain Julian Montoya said. "But today we weren’t good enough in some aspects of the game and against a quality team like South Africa, it is too much advantage (to give up)."The first half we were five or six times in their 22 but we did not take the opportunities. We need to look inside and be better but we are taking steps forward. We will improve." South Africa lost scrumhalf Grant Williams to a head injury after 31 seconds, among the shortest caps for a starter in test history, but led 15-6 at halftime. There was no score in the first 28 minutes of the second period but Carreras missed two kickable penalties that would have made all the difference in the end. Against the run of play, the Boks scored a third try as excellent defence pressured the visitors into coughing up the ball on the home side’s 22 and replacement scrumhalf Faf de Klerk sent Libbok away.Argentina hit back almost immediately as Carreras crossed but a missed conversion meant they trailed by eight points past the hooter at the end of the game. They did close the gap further though as Bertranou scored under the posts, but must now seek revenge in a World Cup warm-up game against the Boks in Buenos Aires next Saturday. [ad_2]

Stormers conjure up beautiful comeback as lusty Lions lose their roar
Clayton Blommetjies was inclined all through. (Photograph by Christiaan Kotze/Gallo Photos) At Ellis Park It is in all probability a behavior they’d wish to shake off earlier than later, however for now, the Stormers are conjuring up victories within the URC once they cannot declare to have precisely performed their greatest rugby. That was the dominant theme of their 31-22 victory right here on Saturday over a burgeoning Lions mixture that misplaced its roar after a sterling efficiency within the first half. For no less than the primary 50 minutes of what was in lots of respects a pulsating derby, the Cape franchise had been knocked off their stride by a house aspect that very evidently pitched up, however used the half-time break properly as they regrouped and delivered some pleasant attacking passages to overtake a considerable deficit. The Lions’ marking was notably compelling within the first 40, an imperfect however efficient combination of line-speed, intent and inaccuracy that, allied with a relatively chaotic breakdown, noticed them convert at least 5 penalties although the halfback pairing of Jordan Hendrikse and Sanele Nohamba. It was a surprisingly subdued interval for the defending champions, who at occasions actually needed to feed off scraps because the Lions, admirably, confirmed the kind of recreation administration that has been missing for years of their play. Certainly, the Stormers had been solely within the body by means of an excellent present of energy by Angelo Davids, who, after the Stormers – nearly out of nowhere – discovered acquainted attacking momentum and house instantly, backed himself properly to overpower his defender when he had some technique to go to the tryline. Manie Libbok’s sole penalty try additionally got here from Hendrikse’s avoidable yellow card for a reckless excessive deal with on Paul de Moist. Nevertheless, after conceding at least 19 factors towards Ulster two weeks in the past with a person down, the Lions confirmed commendable spirit in ultimately outscoring their opponents 6-3 in that 10-minute interval. That increase in confidence led to Andries Coetzee well slithering by means of a yawning hole, permitting Emmanuel Tshituka to make metres and produce an outstanding offload to an irrepressible Henco van Wyk, who confirmed physicality and willpower to attain a positive strive. Armed with a half-time lead of 22-10, the Lions ought to’ve gone for the kill. As a substitute, the Stormers got here out with vigour and, in a improvement that may please the Springbok employees, had their nationwide gamers to thank for main the way in which. Libbok was the principle protagonist, standing up brilliantly within the tight moments and delivering the deft chip excessive that allowed Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu to revenue off a horrible bounce for Francke Horn. Evan Roos, culpable for missing intent on defence with the Lions strive, revelled because the Stormers began to search out house and was instrumental within the build-up to Clayton Blommetjies’ rating with a positive offload. In the meantime, the Lions had been culpable of maybe being too conservative as soon as they began to wrestle within the territorial stakes, kicking possession away too simply when a number of extra carries may’ve gotten them out of their very own half. And for a championship-pedigreed staff just like the Stormers, that is absolute fodder, exemplified by a robust maul spearheaded by Nama Xaba for the clinching rating. Level scorers: Lions – 22 (22) Attempt: Henco van Wyk Conversion: Jordan Hendrikse Penalties: Hendrikse (3), Sanele Nohamba (2) Stormers – 31 (10) Tries: Angelo Davids, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Clayton Blommetjies, Nama Xaba Conversions: Manie Libbok (4) Penalty: Libbok Originally published at Irvine News HQ

Tonga vs. Boks RWC predictions
By 35, says Josh Graham, South Africa. The Springboks will be eager to respond to their loss, and I anticipate that Tonga will experience the full fury of a wounded animal. Amazingly, intriguing pairings like Andre Esterhuizen and Canan Moodie don’t even receive a second look in the top 23. The Boks will likely end their pool season in commanding fashion.
By 33, says Alan Dymock, South Africa. Is it strange to see Marco van Staden filling in for Deon Fourie at No. 2 as the replacement hooker? Sure. The lineout should be under strain since the scrum won’t be as effective as it could be. Consider the rest of that pack, though. Let these gigantic men construct the armchair if a 75% Pollard is to be introduced back into Test rugby. They’ll aim to maintain their tight grip until Tonga are worn out.
TONGA vs. SOUTH AFRICA HEAD-TO-HEAD RESULTS
South Africa may have won the 2007 Rugby World Cup, but a week after trouncing England 36-0 in the pool round, they nearly lost to the Ikale Tahi.
The Springboks nearly paid the price for ringing the changes for Tonga in Lens, narrowly escaping with a 30-25 victory. And the Pacific Islanders came dangerously close to winning it!
South Africa won easily in the first meeting of these teams at Newlands in 1997, defeating the visitors 74-10.
