My Favorite to Least Favorite Episodes of Magnum PI Season 2 So Far
I know no one asked for this but I was rating the episodes in my head for a post-Christmas re-watch and I thought I might as well write it out and share...
(I also just wanted a reason to look at some of all the amazing Miggy gifts from this season!)
Nr. 1
2x01 - Payback for Beginners
I loved the premier. It had all my favorite things. Fun case with a bit of a twist, Magnum & Higgings banter, some fun snark from Rick and TC and just an all-around good and fun feeling. Possibly because it’s the first episode of the season (I always get flashbacks to how excited I was for season 2 when watching it!) or just because it was awesome. Both are equally possible. Also, the Miggy was strong with this one, always a bonus!
Tumblr media
Nr. 2
2x09 - A Bullet Named Fate
This episode, where Harry gets shot, we got Magnum and Higgy following his tracks and then finding out about the kidnapped girl. I just enjoy the shit out of it. I’m not sure exactly why because I didn’t love it as much the first time around but on the re-watches, it has really grown on me and is now one of my faves.
Tumblr media
Nr. 3
2x08 - He Came by Night
This is the episode where Magnum takes the case without asking Higgy first and is possibly the most shippy episode of the season (other than maybe the Secret Room) in my opinion. But I don’t just love it for the Miggy but this has one of the subplots I rather enjoyed most this season, the one with the veteran lying about his identity.
Tumblr media
Nr. 4
2x02 - Honor Among Thieves
Jin is fun on the first watch. On the second and third, not as enjoyable. I did like a lot of the banter in this episode and Magnum trying to talk Higgy into becoming his partner. Also TC + Rick’s trying to get a loan and then partner up is really amazing and feels relevant to what is going on with Magnum, which the subplots don’t always do.
Tumblr media
Nr. 5
2x07 - The Man in the Secret Room
So in this one the case itself isn’t super in focus, but I don’t mind one bit. I love mopey Magnum and everyone trying to be supportive in their own ways, the guys with funny dog vidoes, Higgins with tough love and just being there and Gordon by just actually saying he’s sorry.
Tumblr media
Nr. 6
2x06 - Lie, Cheat, Steal, Kill
Magnum is just so happy at the start and then his poor little heart gets crushed by the end. This one just like the episode after (2x07) isn’t as cased focus but more character-focused which I like a lot. It was a little over the top on the Miggy (which I should have liked but annoyed me on the re-watches for some reason.)
Tumblr media
Nr. 7
2x03 - Knight Lasts Forever
I really liked a few bits of this (I think you can guess which bits...the miggy ones of course) but after the midseason finale, I feel like the Ivan storyline is just ‘mewwe’, so this ep. lost some of its enjoyability.
Tumblr media
Nr. 8
2x10 - Blood Brothers
This one had a lot of really amazing moments and even though I have some issues with flashbacks I actually enjoyed this one more on the re-watch for some reason.
Tumblr media
Nr.  9
2x04 - Dead Inside
There was nothing wrong with this episode, but there was just a few too many things going on somehow for them to all have enough to fully develop. Gordon and his feels about drugs, the different suspects, Magnum / Higgins just having teamed up and still ironing things out, then the subplot of looking for the missing football player’s stolen Ipad. Confused Higgy and Magnum and Gordon having some little moments at the football game was a great ending though...
Tumblr media
Nr. 10
2x05 - Make It 'Til Dawn
Suffering a little from the same thing as the one above. There are four separate stories; Higgy and Rick at the haunted house, Magnum and Jin on the hunt for the bail jumper, Gordon and his partner after the serial killer and TC and Kumu at the sacred site. Even though Magnum+Higgins+Gordon+Jin plots sort of merge together it still feels both too coincidental and too random for me to truly love it.
Tumblr media
Nr. 11
2x11 - Day I Met the Devil
Yeah, so the midseason finale was the episode I liked the least. Ivan was a huge disappointment, the whole Magnum on random team planing on kidnapping the weapons dealer thing didn’t draw me in and while the team coming to get Magnum was nice I just didn’t enjoy it as much as I’d hoped. Maybe I just had too high expectations.
Tumblr media
____
That’s my list in order of how much I like the episodes of the first half of the second season, just in time for the crossover episode later today!
I’d love to hear how you’d rate the season 2 episodes we have had so far!
Also, happy new year! Can you believe it’s 2020 already?

Review of X-Over Event - Hawaii Five-0 & Magnum PI
OMG I loved it so much.
That’s it. That’s the whole review!
No, but seriously, both of these were super enjoyable to watch. I haven’t watched Hawaii Five-0 since like season 1 but this kinda made me want to (which is the point of crossovers I know, so success!) and the Magnum episode!!!
Can we just, like, appreciate the Miggy in this one? Like if I didn’t ship it so hard, I’d probably be (very annoyedly) throwing up rainbows from how many Magnum/Higgins moments there are and how freaking sweet and amazing they were!
First, we get the opening scene which is just adorable!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then the end?
For a second I was all “oh no way, they’re gonna dance too?” but then TC is all “Wanna dance Higgy baby?” and it’s just even better than if she’d danced with Magnum because of the looks and the smiling.
Tumblr media
And this! the way he looks at her and...I’m just gonna re-watch that scene like 100 times.
Tumblr media
I loved (in no particular order)
The phone call.
Magnum being all proud “she’s a ex-spy”.
All the Miggy arguments.
All the Miggy looks.
Rick asking Nyssa al Ghul out...I mean Quinn Liu (also, how is Katrina Law so freaking stunning, it’s not fair to the rest of the world).
As illustrated above - the blanket opening scene, golden, and the end scene at La Mariana. Especially Higgins being all “I think you’re even more awesome than McGarrett“ and the looks there. They were amazing.
Higgins not being able to hack into something for once. Because she might be awesome but she’s not all-powerful (and she shouldn’t have to be.)
Gordon actually getting to be in the know! Yes with the trust!
Higgy being all shary and encouraging with the whole “I’d still would have done it all over with Richard” despite him dying, which I think shows she’s realizing even with the hurt there is a lot of good stuff and is moving on.
Miggy office romance talk at the end, also amazing.
The Ferrari’s tires being shot out!
McGarrett + Magnum team-up!
Spill the tea! (Higgins not knowing what this meant felt kind of silly but it was so adorable “because I’m British?” that I just have to put it on the good-list.)
Didn’t love
How Higgins and Quinn just stood around when they realized they were about to be shot when the SD-card was opened without doing anything. I feel Higgins with her spy training should have gone “our backup just checked the van he’s not there. give us the card back” for a distraction and Magnum could have done his kick-ass stuff. IDK, all of them should have done something more than just stand around and wait to be shot.
The Adam Noshimuri character being thrown in there. I get it made sense for Hawaii Five-o viewers but that kind of threw me a little, even with the intro in the beginning.
Felt like I missed something with the girls not actually getting McGarrett text that the CIA were coming at the start of the Magnum episode.
How they just got rid off the whole Five-o gang. Couldn’t they have done one or two scenes? I get that the mains there have fancy contracts and stuff but come on, but seriously? I’m feeling a little salty about it.
Overall I just enjoyed the heck out of both of these and I can’t wait to re-watch them!

Conversation
This scene...
Magnum: Do you really hate losing that much?
Juliet: It's not that I mind losing. It's just for some reason, I do mind losing - to you. I'm not sure why.
(Me: I have some ideas!!!!)
Magnum: Well, if you want a re-match. It's your house, your estate, your alarm system. You can test it out whenever you want.
(Me: Also Magnum. He's also yours. You may also test him out any time you want.)
Juliet: I might take you up on that.

Magnum PI - 3.03 - No Way Out
So this week episode was...well, I don’t know.
I guess I enjoyed it and we got some fun moments. But over all I just... I just didn’t like anyone (weird because they’re my babies) . Everyone were just acting so not cool with each other. The bickering was annoying rather endearing. Seriously some of the most enjoyable bits were the Rick-being-worried-mother-hen ones.
Also where was the Miggy? There was barely any! (yes I’m saying that about the episode where we got this)
Tumblr media
and an end scene like this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This little squint-y thing when she’s texting Ethan and smiling? We see you Magnum.
Tumblr media
(And how can Jay just get hotter and hotter? I mean, seriously, someone call the fire department already!)
Magnum “keeping tally” of her dates....because of “the over under” that was pretty great too! And him pulling her out of the elevator. And her giving him a ‘mmmm nice’ look when he was wearing the sexy black commando outfit...
IDK, maybe there was some Miggy crumbs and maybe my slight ‘meehewh’ experience was it was just because I was watching this at 5 am and the streaming site kept buffering (and I just got so spoiled with 3.01-2). But I don’t know. It did feel a little flat. Maybe low stakes because I didn’t feel like no one was actually in danger, which is really weird during a hostage situation.
Plus point for the fact that they brought up / it caused problem that Higgy switched to TC for her Fake-Fiance! That was just so stupid I’m glad it actually came back to bite her. I would however have liked them all to be blaming themselves, rather than each other, because that just wasn’t cute.
Still, I mean some of the biggest reasons I watch Magnum because of good (and oh so pretty) characters, friendship and brotherhood (and partnership), Miggy, beautiful scenery and cool cars. I didn’t get much of any of that other than a minute at the end. Like seriously, there was not even one shot of the Ferrari this week...*tears*
Having some almost-personal-experience (one of my best friends is currently appealing her work visa and was possibly going to have to leave right before Christmas) it’s really tough to not know what’s going to happen. My friend is really broken up about it and I’m really bummed out too. It’s real terrifying to be at the whim of some government person who don’t know you or your circumstances other than from a sheet of paper. A person, that have the power to separate you from your new family and home.
So I kind of get why Juliet is upset and lashing out. She hates that she has no control. So I can forgive her.... for half of it.
But these guys all did this illegal thing for you Juliet, because they wanted you to stay so bad!
Magnum is easily as upset as you Higgy and TC isn’t happy either. They love you! Try to remember that!
(I mean TC lied badly and awkwardly for you girl, come on!)
Tumblr media
Blaming them might be a cooping mechanism (and I actually love the fact that we got her fake crying about her ‘daddy issues’ because we all know that she probably got some. At least my head cannon Mr. Higgins isn’t winning dad of the year awards) but it’s also going backwards for her character (but when have they ever really cared about that?).
I figure it’s for the drama but it could have been equally dramatic if Higgy had just gone ‘I guess that means I’m going home for good’ and started mentioning all the things she was going to miss and Magnum was being all, ‘I’m sorry I fudge it up’ (even though I’m not sure I actually think it’s more Magnum’s fault than anyone else’s...)
Or they could have kept it all the same, but at some point actually had Juliet admit that she said yes to the proposal, she’s at fault too and maybe that she really should just have married Magnum. I mean that would just have been the simplest and most likely to succeed thing to do to succeed with the fake visa. Her switching messed it up and even with the ‘I own a business’ visa it’s still causing problems.
This could also finally have given them a moment to talk about WHY she did that (because they would be less likely that things went wrong with TC? Wouldn’t he go to jail if they found out same as with Magnum? How did switching ever make any sense?), maybe we could even have gotten some Miggy feels hinted at - of course interrupted by Bad Guys coming to shoot them.
I feel like this was maybe how it went in the original script - because of the whole “and I didn’t have to marry either one of you” comment at the end. I feel like that might have been meant to tie in with a scene like that. But that’s probably just my shippy sleepy brain making stuff up!
Despite this all I did enjoyed Magnum little speech about how it’s all his fault. It’s totally stupid and illogical for him to make it and if the immigration guy hadn’t been all ‘lets just forget about this because you saved my life, welcome to America’ it would maybe even have led to Magnum losing his license, them all getting arrested and Higgy deported. It’s still really cute and heartwarming and if Juliet keeps calling him immature man-child after this I’m gonna be annoyed.
Tumblr media
The “welcome home” at the end and generally good feeling of things being some what settled with the visa (or so I’m assuming) is really nice. Higgy is finally actually home and we got a lovely family dinner with the whole gang, Juliet saying thank you and some Miggy puppy dog eyes to finish it all up with. Over all it felt vaguely like this might have been meant to air around Thanksgiving or something originally.
I guess I can’t complain too much. Little sad we didn’t get any kind of Christmas feels (but with the filming scheduled weird due to corona I get why no one would even have considered it) but I really hope we get a X-mas themed episode in season 4!

Magnum PI 2x09 - A Bullet Named Fate
Starting off with the title, which I, unlike last week, LOVE to DEATH. This is a proper good Magnum PI title. Only alternative title I’d be willing to accept is “I’m A Bad Influence”
Only that wouldn’t be quite right, because as of late, I feel like Magnum is actually the most mature of them all. We got Gordon punching people, we got Rick randomly quitting his job and buying a bar, Higgins throwing caution (and Britishness) to the wind to partner up with Magnum (for Higgins, that is full-on crazy), her being all passive-aggressively salty about Magnum taking a case against her wishes and now randomly opening a bottle of Robin’s wine. Also, TJ and Kumu getting arrested (for standing up for what they believe in, so I guess that’s good but still.)
Meanwhile, we got Magnum asking Higgins to become his partner because she makes him a better detective, telling Abby they can make a long-distance relationship work (which she shut down in a second but you know, points for trying), him telling Higgins that they have to be honest with each other and talk about their problems and feelings, him trying to wine (and dine) a fancy client and then replacing a really expensive bottle of wine he broke.
Is Magnum winning at maturity this season?
Tumblr media
I think he might be.
And I don’t mind. It’s just funny when you think about it, because Magnum keeps getting crap about how immature he is and stuff.
Anyway, on to the actual review. This week we start off with Old Guy Private Detective Harry stumbling around, bleeding, trying to reach out to Magnum.
Serious start for an overall serious episode.
Part of me I really loved the case this week. It was more clever and interesting than a lot of the cases have been lately. It hit all the right spots, we got poor Harry kicking things off, pulling Magnum into the case, then it twists around 100% when they find the super creepy kidnap room with the drawings and then again when we realize it’s another girl and not the daughter who is the kidnap victim. A sweet kiddy hug with Higgins and then little girl reunited with family cuteness. It ticks all the boxes for me.
Except for the “internal conflict” (other than Magnum blaming himself we get very little of this) or emotional conflict between characters. There was no Miggy fight/ banter/disagreement. No TJ and Rick trying to get a loan/ lying vet/ moral dilemma. No worrying father figure might have cancer. So while I loved the case/plot, the emotional impact of this episode wasn’t as big for me.
I feel like if they’d thrown in more of moment where Higgins was all “who would do this” and Magnum added “IDK, I was in isolation when I was at the POW camp, and can’t believe someone would do it to a kid” or Higgins revealing some situation where she had been in trouble as an MI6 agent and thought she’d go to jail, it would have resonated super well and added so much to the episode.
We do get some adorable Miggy moments in the basement, both at the start and at the end of the episode (I feel like this is a new standard, all episodes must now start with Magnum / Higgins and also end with them! It’s the law!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But with all the amazing Miggy content, we’ve been getting in season 2 I think I’m getting spoiled. This was no nearly enough. If it had been any other show and my faves were all sweet and supportive (I mean this is basically Higgins give Magnum 20 hugs and telling him everything is going to be alright, in Higgins speak) after he lost a big client, I’d been ecstatic. But because I now feel entitled to at least 10 seconds of fond gazing and mixed with flirty banter every two minutes, this episode isn’t doing it for me (in the Miggy department).
I can’t believe he actually replaced the bottle though...I mean, Higgy was maybe more shocked than I, but not by much. I feel like someone needs to write a meta (or whatever) on what the wine bottles + cellar throughout the series symbolize. Or maybe I’m overthinking it, but I feel like it’s something! I mean wine does mean happiness, friendship, and transformation (according to my two-second google search) which so totally connects with Miggy’s storyline.
As for the side-plot with Kumu, TC and Molly, I liked it, but it, as I said before, felt like it was lacking conflict between the characters. Sure, we had Molly’s mom being upset but who wouldn’t be, having to pick their 16-year-old up from the police station! but she was just som rando we don’t know (or do we?).
Who is this lady who plays Molly’s mother? Where do I recognize her from? Who does she look like? Please send help!
Tumblr media
So while the side plot was cute and I kind of liked it, just like a lot of the side plots, it doesn't tie in with either theme or the case of the episode. I really would like to know if there is a plan for them or is it just fillers? I really don’t know what they want to do with them.
If the focus had been all on the gang and their personal problems (like the bar getting on its feet, someone at the Cultural Center being killed and they investigate it a little each episode, Higgins making a friend at yoga or Robin master’s house having mold and now Higgins has to move in with Magnum...ooops, fan fic idea not likely show plot.) that’s been more interesting.
The protest was a bit of follow up but I thought the construction guy was all fine and cool about the sacred site at Halloween? Now suddenly it’s being torn down/ built over? I guess people can change their minds, and also drama. This isn’t quite the connected plotline I was hoping for but at least it’s a little bit of one.
But what’s the point of side plots right now?! I know not everything has to have a meaning or come back but a little more would be fun. I mean even just something small like they’re adding a pool to Robin’s Nest, could be a fun side plot (the construction project where everything goes wrong! Also a fun FF idea).
That’s pretty much it for today! It sucks that we have to wait 2 weeks but I guess you all in America are going to be in food comas from Thanksgiving / out shopping next Friday so it makes sense we have to wait for a little! And once that one is done it’s over for this year (this decade really. Can you believe it’s 2020 in like a month and some change??)
Now for something else. Each week I tend to have a moment or two where I go um what? If it’s me being clueless, not being American or actual strange things, I don’t know. But if you know what’s going on/ have an answer, please write me a line!
Um what?
What sixteen year old is applying to college? Is this a normal thing?
Can you arrest people for peacefully protesting? Is this a thing? What about Freedom of Speach and all that you’re semi-famous for America?
Where was the heir? The guy whose house Harry found? Magnum said at the end that they closed two cases but did they ever figure out where this guy was and why all that mail was piled up outside his house? I want to know!
Why did you not start by checking empty listings/ properties? I mean seriously? Have you never seen an episode of anything where the bad guy is a realtor? They always hide out in empty properties! Geesh, Magnum, is it your first day on the job?
