Mangtae Hal-abeoji

The Mangtae Hal-abeoji, alos known as Net Bag Grandfather is an old man employed by adults to frighten children into obedience. It is said that he kidnaps spoiled, misbehaving children and takes them away to the mountains, where they are never seen again. There is a condition that the parent must tell the child that the wretched grandfather is taking him, before he is stolen away.

There are many stories about what happens to the child that Net Bag Grandfather took away, some say that Net Bag Grandfather devoured him or that he will never return home again, and there are stories that he is sent back home after being severely scolded by Net Bag Grandfather.

The name is often transformed into Mangtae Grandpa, and depending on the region, he is sometimes called Barang Grandpa or Salt Market. Also, in Lee Yong-ak's poem, it appears under the name of 'Gat Juji', which shows that in the poet's hometown of the northern provinces, there is a tradition that a 'Gat Juji (monk)' takes a child instead of Net Bag Grandfather.
