London playlist
Tumblr media
London - since 43 AD it has to be one of the more fascinating cities on Earth. Such a rich history. From Shakespeare Theatre to the music from there today. I just had to put a London playlist together. From Soho to Brixton, from Highgate to Clapham  what a collection of songs! It’s over 350 songs and it could easily expand to 400. **I have a separate England & Wales playlist coming, so, stay tuned for that**.

Let’s Clear the Air: The Rise of the Domestic Air Purifier
In ancient Greece, air (along with earth, water, fire, and aether) was one of the five elements thought to comprise all substances. Questions of air quality began to arise in the Middle Ages, even before the composition of the atmosphere was discovered.[1] In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, as coal became deeply entrenched in both the economy and the environment, the problem became more urgent. Fossil fuel powered steam, and later electricity, drove trains, and heated homes—while also spewing smoke and smog. Meanwhile, scientists worked to improve air quality, mostly addressing occupational needs. In 1823, for example, Charles and John Deane designed a Smoke Helmet for firefighters to combat smoke-induced suffocation; in 1854, John Stenhouse developed a wood-charcoal-filter mask to protect miners from noxious fumes. Stenhouse’s mask was updated in 1871 by the physicist John Tyndall, who added a cotton filter saturated with charcoal, lime, and glycerin.[2]
While these devices improved respiration at the individual level, they did little to enhance environmental air quality. The first technology to do so was developed during World War II with the creation of the HEPA—or high efficiency particulate air—filter.[3] A joint project of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and the Army Chemical Corp, the HEPA filter was conceived to guard soldiers and scientists, especially those working on the Manhattan Project, from radioactive particles. While failing to reduce the harmful impact of radiation, HEPA filters offered effective protection from mustard and chlorine gasses. In the postwar period, as manufacturers retooled their factories from war- to peacetime production, HEPA technology allowed for the commodification of air purifiers. The 1960s witnessed both commercial and political progress in the field of air purity.
One researcher dedicated to the field of air purification was physician Alvan Barach, dubbed by his colleagues the “father of oxygen therapy.”[4] In the late 1950s, Dr. Barach collaborated with William Hall, a designer at Donald Deskey Associates, to develop a domestic air purifier. Their design passed air through an electrostatic field and filter, then alternately humidified and dehumidified it before recirculating the treated air back into the environment. The Barach-Hall air purifier was patented in 1961, and specified a device 3 ½-feet wide, 3-feet tall, and 20-inches deep. The DDA air purifier designs in Cooper Hewitt’s collection show that the firm worked out concepts for both vertically- and horizontally-oriented devices.
Drawing, Designs for Air Purifiers, c. 1961; Donald Deskey Associates
The drawing featured in this post belongs to a trio of polished renderings attributed to Earl (Bud) Hoyt, and which indicate that the horizontal concept prevailed. Here the air purifier formally adheres to the boxy rectilinearity typical of the 1950s. Supported by a nearly invisible base, the machine’s sides, rear, and front panel would likely have been constructed of prefabricated plywood or laminated with a wood-grain finish; at the top, two perforations function as handles for transportation between rooms. A beige, likely metallic, housing conceals the purifier’s mechanisms. These are controlled by buttons at upper right and accessed by a hinged front panel: in the drawing, this is likely the outlined section at front left. Hoyt has styled the device as a piece of modern case furniture, providing a neutral display space for bibelots, in this case colored glass vases. Although we know that in the 1960s DDA sold the rights to the Barach-Hall Air Purifier to J. H. Emerson Company (founded by Barach’s peer and collaborator Jack Haven Emerson) it is unclear whether these designs were ever produced. [5]
In 1963, two years after the Barach-Hall air purifier was patented, Klaus and Manfred Hammes developed the first air purifier intended for domestic use; that same year, U.S. Congress passed the Clean Air Act, which set fuel emission standards with the aim of reducing environmental air pollution. Concurrently, advancing research on respiration revealed that allergy and asthma sufferers alike benefitted from air purifiers.[6] Today, air purification remains a primary concern as we work to mitigate the global problem of worsening air quality that has resulted from years of under- or unregulated production and unfettered pollution. The air purifier at once represents industrial design’s potential to improve life and, more soberingly, the harmful impact of its byproducts on our wellbeing and environment. Fortunately, scientists and designers alike continue to work toward solutions that will allow us all to breathe a little easier.

[1] See Peter Brimblecombe, “Attitudes and Responses Towards Air Pollution in Medieval England,” Journal of the Air Pollution Control Association 26, no. 10 (1976), 941-945. In the seventeenth century the existence of air pressure was proven and the ability to measure it developed. In the 1770s a series of advances led to the isolation and identification of oxygen gas.

[3] The acronym HEPA was applied to the invention retroactively by a U.S. Department of Energy official in the 1960s. HEPA filters function by physically trapping airborne contaminants, while on the other hand ionizers emit charged particles that bond with contaminants, weighing them down and preventing them from circulating with an environment’s clean air.

[5] Emerson is best-known for his improvements to the iron lung in the 1940s, widely used to treat polio patients until the vaccine was developed in the late ‘50s/early ‘60s; Emerson’s innovation was spurred by a suggestion by Barach, and the pair went on to jointly develop an automated cough machine for neuromuscular disease patients.
[6] Asthma was historically considered a psychological disorder and was only acknowledged as a medical condition in the mid- to late-twentieth century, concomitant with the rise of the domestic air purifier.

The Top-Secret History of Air Purifiers
Upwards of 8 out of 10 sensitivity sufferers have hypersensitivity indications all year because of indoor allergens. Lasting hypersensitivity side effects can be constrained by improving indoor air quality with air cleaners. Nowadays, there are such huge numbers of alternatives for air cleaning: heater channels, HEPA air purifiers, ionic air cleaners, humidifiers that wash the air, ozone generators, and entire house air sanitization frameworks . . . which may leave the sensitivity shopper pondering: How did we get this far with air cleaning innovation?
You may believe that air purging is another furor, yet in fact, it dates a lot more distant back than the vast majority figure it out. Albeit old-fashioned, different sorts of air cleansing have been around for over 200 years. Since the mid 1800s, researchers have been taking a shot at approaches to make our air more clean. Toward the beginning of the mechanical upheaval in the United States, John and Charles Dean built up a veil for firemen in 1823, enabling firemen to enter consuming structures without being overwhelmed by perilous smoke vapor.
As the Industrial Revolution truly grabbed hold in America, coal consuming turned into an essential lifestyle all through developing urban communities. Using coal enabled architects to deliver power and fuel to control prepares and heat homes. Notwithstanding, as coal turned into a focal asset for developing city life, the air got dirtied with smoke and foreboding shadows of brown haze.
It was not until 1854 that John Stenhouse built up a veil worn by jumpers and coal diggers to ensure against dirtied air. Stenhouse's veil depended on a charcoal-based channel plan, like a portion of the carbon channels utilized in air purifiers today. These covers sifted many air polluting influences and made enormous headways in the field of air cleaning. Utilizing charcoal in his air sift empowered Stenhouse to channel through increasingly hurtful, toxic gases from the air than past filtration veils. In 1871, John Tyndall overhauled the first fireman covers made by the Deans, acquainting a respirator with help in the relaxing for firemen. The blend of the respirator gadget and filtration framework turned out to be early forerunners to the present respirator veils.
HEPA Air Filters
Shhh! You may not know it, however whisper quiet HEPA air purifier channels were initially named top-mystery, created by the US Atomic Energy Commission to shield warriors from radioactive particles on the combat zone. During World War II, researchers associated with the Manhattan Project utilized HEPA covers to prepare for contaminants from the nuclear bomb.
In spite of the fact that these early HEPA veils couldn't in any way, shape or form shield individuals from nuclear radiation, the exploration generated the HEPA channel, which gave security against chlorine gas, mustard gas, and fire hurlers. It was not until the 1960s that details were institutionalized and the term HEPA or "High Efficiency Particulate Air" was formally begat by the Department of Energy (DOE).
Tumblr media
As characterized by the DOE, HEPA channels evacuate at any rate 99.97% of residue, dust, form, microscopic organisms and any airborne particles with a size of 0.3 microns at 85 liters for each moment. From the earliest starting point, HEPA sift were utilized to channel through profoundly dangerous pressurized canned products, lethal cancer-causing agents, radioactive particules, and biohazardous pollutes.
In the mean time, over the world in Germany, siblings Klaus and Manfred Hammes obtained a patent for a straightforward air filtration framework. Utilizing a fiberglass cushion appended with little magnets to the air outlet of a private oil broiler, the Hammes siblings had the option to channel ash from the air. In 1963, the Hammes siblings' basic yet successful channel turned into the first air cleaner to be used in quite a while crosswise over Germany.
Unintentionally, around the same time, US Congress passed the Clean Air Act of 1963 to set measures for the decrease of air contamination through fuel emanations gauges. Despite the fact that it was not Congress' first endeavor at decreasing air contamination, the Clean Air Act of 1963 cautioned researchers and purchasers of the need to shield our lungs from poisons, for example, aromas, building materials, synthetics, pesticides, and allergens.
The Air Purifier Craze
Never again named top-mystery, HEPA air purifiers got famous during the 1970s and 1980s as more buyers got worried about air contamination. With the presentation of many items highlighting HEPA channels, new and energizing approaches to control hypersensitivities and asthma at long last turned out to be generally accessible for private use. Initially, the first HEPA air purifiers were massive, hard to work, and generally utilized uniquely in emergency clinic and pharmaceutical settings and among PC chip makers. At that point organizations started to consider indoor air quality worries among private purchasers.
In light of the developing interest for cleaner air, Incen AG, the Hammes siblings' recently shaped organization moved to Switzerland and started creating and fabricating private air purifiers in 1971. After numerous long periods of universal accomplishment for Incen AG, Frank Hammes, child of Klaus Hammes, started to appropriate lodge air channels as extra extras for Mercedes-Benz autos in 1990. In 1991, Frank Hammes framed IQAir North America, which has advanced the persistent development and achievement of the air refinement industry. In 2002, IQAir air purifiers turned into the principal air cleaners to join H13 class affirmed HEPA channels, which catch up to multiple times a bigger number of particles than customary HEPA channels. H13 class affirmed HEPA channels, up to that point, had just been utilized in medical clinic tidy up rooms.
In 1991, through the astonishing innovation of True Medical HEPA and Activated Carbon, Richard Taylor made a channel that tended to the issues of ecological particulate tainting, synthetic poisonous quality, and scents. It was then that he and his significant other Joyce established Austin Air Systems Limited. Based out of Buffalo, NY, Austin Air presented a pre-channel that guaranteed a HEPA channel life unparalleled to anything in the business. Austin Air's 360-degree admission framework brings air into all sides of the air cleaner, expanding effectiveness and conveying all the more perfect air quicker. With the biggest air cleaner fabricating office on the planet, Austin Air keeps on delivering every one of the parts for their incredible air purifiers.
Set up in 1992, AllerAir immediately turned into a confided in name in air decontamination. After a relative of AllerAir organizer Sam Teitelbaum built up Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) , Teitelbaum and accomplice Wayne Martin chose to build up their very own air more clean. Utilizing the mix of genuine HEPA channels and a MAC-B (mass enacted carbon bed) channels, which contain pounds of carbon, AllerAir made an air purifier that securely and adequately evacuates synthetics, gases, and smells from the air. With workplaces in the United States, Italy, and Canada, AllerAir air purifiers are utilized by the Mayo Clinic, IBM, Gucci, Prada, and the U.S. Armed force. With in excess of 100 model to look over, AllerAir air cleaners are productive, reasonable, and financially savvy.
With home office in Stockholm, Sweden, and Chicago, the Blueair air purifier organization is focused on making a more advantageous condition both inside and out. Established in Sweden in 1996, Blueair immediately earned a notoriety for elite, mechanical development, and quality plan. A progressive mix of mechanical and electrostatic filtration permits Blueair purifiers to catch 99.97% of aggravating particles, gases, and scents. With in excess of five distinct models, these amazing yet close quiet air cleaners give an outwardly satisfying structure and profoundly successful capacity.

Presently a worldwide innovator in the generation of claim to fame items and synthetic substances and an auxiliary brand of Kaz, Honeywell began as a water heating appliance organization in 1906 and has a longstanding convention of providing sheltered, solid, and excellent items. Obtained by Kaz in July of 2002, Honeywell's indoor air quality items persistently meet and surpass the American Lung Association's Health House rules with significant advancements dependent on customer research and experiences. With the utilization of perpetual, lifetime HEPA channels, Honeywell air cleaners expel 99.97% of all normal, family unit particles, for example, dust, dust, tobacco, smoke, and feline dander. The Honeywell glass-fiber HEPA material helps evacuate airborne particles without the utilization of costly bright bulbs, synthetic compounds, or different medicines. With a decent variety of items to meet your requirements, Honeywell offers a progression of Home Comfort and Indoor Air Quality Solutions.
Albeit no longer a top-mystery government venture, air purifiers still hold the key to cleaner air and more beneficial conditions for some asthma and hypersensitivity sufferers. Today HEPA air purifiers and channels are utilized in an assortment of basic filtration applications in atomic, electronic, aviation, pharmaceutical and restorative fields, just as in homes the world over. Contrast air purifiers and figure out how with pick the best air purifier for your needs. An air purifier could be the key to better relaxing for you and your family.

Besetzung
Udo Samel: Luigi „Lutschi“ Mackeroni
Peter Lohmeyer: Sam Hanks
Iris Berben: Dr. Doris Riffleson
Leonard Lansink: Bob alias Babette
Marc Richter: Billy
Evelyn Künneke: Leichenbeschauerin Wilma
Hella von Sinnen: Detektivin Sally
Heribert Sasse: Mann vom Secret Service
Meret Becker: Phyllis Higgins
