Seems pretty obvious to me that Bill Cipher’s severe problems stem from having grown up under a violent dictatorship that probably actively wanted him and his family dead or at least silenced. He says it was illegal to talk about the third dimension, which is weird. Like the government of his country was suppressing scientific facts for who knows what reason, maybe religious, maybe something about maintaining control idk it just smells fishy. Were they maybe ruled by a 3D shadow government lol idk?

And it was so much of an issue his parents poisoned him. Like, what kind of sus back alley doctor did they have to go to get treatment without being turned into the feds as bad actors/traitors? How did they even know his eye was an issue if they couldn’t see it? Who diagnosed Bill with “eye on the top of your head syndrome?” How could another 2D being see the eye was facing up if they can only see in 1D? WTF? Just who were Bill’s parents in this fucked up society and were they connected to some kind of anti-government activities? Or maybe did they work for the government and have to hide the 3rd dimension being real?

So I didn’t watch the whole Flatland movie nor have I read the book because I’ve got the attention span of a water flea, but I do recall some kind of thing about a place where they violently deform babies that don’t “look normal” so they can be “normal.” Bill’s homeland is said to be similar to Flatland. So uh, bro lived until the age of (or the equivalent of) 13 if I’m not mistaken, under a government that would likely try to imprison him, smash his face violently until he conformed, or kill him if he didn’t lay low. Because he has a birth defect that makes him “dangerous”😬 I know the “shoelaces are fascist” was a joke but also like maybe he learned that word from like, his parents whispering about facists idk? 🤷‍♀️

So anyways long post long but we eventually get to the whole “he accidentally killed everyone.”Gotta wonder if some of that need to prove the third dimension was real was because he was desperate to not live in fear anymore of him and his family being killed or thrown into prison. Or maybe he was trying to save his parents from losing government jobs and social status. If he could prove the existence of 3D to everyone then maybe the people would rebel against the government for killing citizens who talked about it? Or maybe a scandal would create some leeway to negotiate his family’s safety and wellbeing? I think Bill hated his country, rightfully. He probably did actually want to “liberate” the people. I think it went beyond just self-aggrandizing and proving he was “right.” If he could see the 3rd dimension it makes me wonder if he could be like the sphere in Flatland and see what goes on behind close doors too. What if he saw them killing babies….

Also if he lived in this kind of society maybe they did public executions which would explain some of his blasé reactions to violence? Oh and he can prob see everyone’s guts so I bet that’s where his sick fascination with guts comes from. He probably recognized people by their guts more than their faces or some weird shit 🤷‍♀️

So he’s young, alone, he killed the only people that mattered to him and also failed to liberate the masses, and now he’s somehow surpassed corporeal reality… I don’t rly get how that part works but okay.

So he’s a god now. Not by choice, by accident. A young being who has lived under totalitarian rule and the threat of persecution his whole life suddenly exists in this fucking vacuum where anything is possible, time isn’t necessarily real, you can shapeshift at will etc. He goes from being afraid and living in a very viscerally corporeal reality to suddenly everything he was ever terrified of is like, gone? So he might feel it didn’t matter? Like his life was some kind of sick twisted joke? Like oh… my whole world was a lie. My existence is meaningless. I destroyed my family and I have nothing now, I mean nothing to anyone, nothing is real, blah blah. It’s quite bleak. He can’t die from what I can tell. They say he “died” but like he didn’t at the same time and suggest that a person is ultimately an idea and you can’t kill an idea? I don’t get how death works in Gravity Falls tbh. Like at all. But basically this fucking dude is alone in the soup of chaos between dimensions or whatever with his entire world reduced to a speck of dust and now he’s god and I guess he didn’t die or can’t die idk it’s fucked up and weird ok???

He probably thinks he’s actually doing Earth a favor by bringing Weirdmageddon? No rules because he’s adverse to any kind of rules due to his upbringing. Do whatever, be whatever kind of freak you are. Nobody can tell you what to do or what to believe. Ironically the way he enforces it is pretty totalitarian but yknow. He’s got issues man. And hey, if once you transcend your dimensional limitations you become a god who’s impervious to death? I think an unhinged out of touch god would be like “well death happens, you’ll get over it and being liberated from your flesh prison is good actually. It’s better than living a lie. Now you can be limitless like me! Trauma is whatever, now you can fly so who cares about therapy?”

Bro was like, yeah great let’s destroy the prison that is the 3rd dimension and turn it into a safe haven for people who love freedommm! 🦅 whoever has to die or get their face rearranged so be it for the greater good, and they will physically recover eventually anyways so it’s whatever. (There’s several instances in canon of god like beings being “killed” or dismembered and recovering such as in one of the books it says Time Baby has to regenerate for a thousand years or whatever after Bill shot him, the guy Pyronica ate in the Fearamid who showed up next scene unscathed, Bill getting his eyeball ripped out and regenerating it etc)

It’s fucked up and twisted but it makes sense so much narratively I think.

im actually not the most gigantic fan of the wizard of oz MOVIE, not because its bad or because of the bts abuse or whatever else. to me i just dont really like it.. being a musical i guess? NOW HOLD ON WAIT because the songs are great and i adore the choreography but. like i was watching it and i was like Man the dialogue and movement of the characters (outside of song) seems really unnatural and dramatic I Wonder Why. at first i was like well its 1939 what do u expect and then i remembered that its a musical and thats just What Musicals Are Like. gotta play it all up for the stage cuz ppl cant see in depth facial expressions yadda yadda yadda, i just dont really like it as much when translated to screen a lot of the time. which is weird because theatrical stage acting translated to screen is the exact reason WHY i like robert sean leonard's acting, though theres a big difference between wilson theatrical and dorothy theatrical. like the stage acting experience made rsl's facial expressions and mannerisms MUCH easier to read, but its played up tenfold in oz where Yes i can tell exactly what each character is thinking, but there arent as many nice lil subtleties. anyway i wish i liked that theatrical style of film more bc i feel like im missing out and now im just land locked to like.... rocketman? i guess? im just not a big musical person in general, especially not musical theatre, again not that i dislike it i just feel like the theatrics ruin my immersion unfortunately

the dialogue specifically in the book is very touch and go for me tbh. its very simple, which is expected from a children's book written in 1900, but i feel like its repetitive almost? not as in the characters say the same thing all the time, but the way they say it is the same thru the whole book. in moderation its fine and again this is very trivial, but i can only take so much

there's a lot of for's which i find endearing on its own but not when its said 50 monillion times. however the illustrations are the cutest sweetest little things in the universe let me show my favs

also also tin man lore goes crazy! he used to be a real guy and he fell in love with this munchkin woman, but didnt have the money to marry her, so he worked real hard chopping trees (woodsman) to get the money. for whatever reason that i dont actually remember, he pissed off a bad witch (i dont remember if it was east or west but i believe east) and got cursed to keep CHOPPING OFF HIS DAMN LIMBS bc her ass really did not want him to marry his lady. anyway he kept chopping off his limbs and this tinsman was like I Will Replace Them With Tin so he DID. after all his limbs got replaced he chopped off his HEAD, got that replaced with tin, THEN CUT HIMSELF IN HALF and got his torso replaced as well. after he no longer had his old body, and therefore his heart, he lost all his love for the munchkin woman. THATS WHY HE WANTS HIS HEART BACK HE WANTS TO LOVE HIS LADY AGAIN!!!!! but she doesnt get mentioned again so that kinda sucks tbh....

i feel inclined to add on to that ask abt movies (cuz i love watching movies).

Trunks to me speaks to me as a person who at one point expected the stuff he watches to change him a little. To help him think in a different perspective and challenge his preconceptions or. SOMETHING. hes the kind of guy to try to watch movies like 2001 space odyssey but by the end of it, just looks up the ending explained. he has to try to get anything out of it. I don't think he liked trainspotting. I don't think he knew what to make of The Shining. Trunks would almost certainly try to not get bored at the beginning of Pulp Fiction (the bulk of that movie is talking). But he'll still go see movies in theaters or watch whatever he's got laying around in the house though.

He thinks he's watching movies to gain something but tbh ? Trunks has been watching movies all his life, and it might just feel rly weird to suddenly. not to. If that makes grammatical sense. I think it just gets too quiet in his house. His mom's always working on something in her lab, vegeta's always in his training room, etc etc. so he puts em on to chill. Even if he doesn't really get them sometimes. Bulma seems like the type to do the same thing while she works, maybe he gets it from her.

That's probably why watching movies with goten is so interesting though. He can really get to the core of what it's trying to say, engage with the story and themes on a meaningful level and come up with his OWN well constructed analysis with an infectious enthusiasm reminiscent of the way Gohan talks about entomology.

And Goten, country bumpkin that he is, probably hasn't even seen more than MAX 30 movies in his life (ever) besides whatever soaps his mom leaves on. he's glad trunks invites him over to watch this stuff. At the end of analyzing whatever film they saw I think he'd be like Waow. That was so cool Trunks thank you for showing me this :-) can I borrow this dvd and never give it back and Trunks will be like yeah man thats cool I'm glad you liked it so much. I have a bunch more laying around it's whatever. (He found a lot of these movies in this "guest" room he's never really been inside of. It still has a lot of stuff from before he was born.)

I think that's so interesting.. that Trunks is familiar with the elements present in film but because it's familiar, it's harder to parse how or why these elements are meshed together to make the whole. he's just "watching" them without really thinking about anything and as such, doesn't gain anything.

But because Goten isn't accustomed to watching movies all the time, he can look with unclouded eyes. Not just watching, but observing and taking all of it in.

Its the difference between hearing and listening if that makes sense.

(One last tidbit which isn't super important. I mentioned earlier a guest room. It was yamcha's. When he moved out, he didn't really take a lot of things with him, choosing to leave some of his clothes and most of his movies behind. Bulma probably told him that he could just leave his stuff there in case he ever wanted to visit. The only movie he bothered to take with him was Caddyshack. For some reason. Why)

Reposting this segment for a TL;DR becasue I thought it was an elegant conclusion:

Trunks is familiar with the elements present in film but because it's familiar, it's harder to parse how or why these elements are meshed together to make the whole. he's just "watching" them without really thinking about anything and as such, doesn't gain anything. But because Goten isn't accustomed to watching movies all the time, he can look with unclouded eyes.

I mean really it all comes down to Trunks being a Modern CityBoy; he's used to background noise, he's used to mindless entertainment. Goten doesn't have things in his life that are meant to be taken for granted, though, so that just makes him overall more attentive and appreciative.

That's the greater discussion here ... A veiled call for action for us all to try to look with fresh eyes upon our own lives ....

Really, If Trunks isn't taking to the creative storytelling aspect of it, he should at least take a shining to the technological artistry. Maybe he doesn't care why or when, but he does know HOW they do what they do. That'd be swagg. But then he'd have to do research on something that isn't Minecraft related. Sighhhh

hey sorry i saw this th other day and promptly forgot to reply!! i think having things in my life i rly care abt helps me a lot and so does my conviction to live in ways that try to lower my impact on the world and others. i kno im like a loser in the eyes of many normal ppl but i never ever feel like it, i dont make a ton of money working w dogs (mostly bc i dont work a ton of hours, but im paid very well when i do wahaha) but im rly good at it and i practice my patience and kindness w them every day and it makes me happy to see them and their owners happy. also honestly being vegan for the animals and planet for over 10 years and caring sm abt it makes me feel rly good abt myself, i always kno that no matter what else is going on im making the best decision there. and just being a diy communist punk in general. hmm honestly i think im just a grateful and simple person in many ways, i truly dont sweat what other ppl think of me (was basically forced to learn this at a young age bc i never fit in lmao), i get a lot of happiness just out of spending time w my pets n partner, playing fantasy vgames and watching movies, crafting things and growing plants. i still get bummed by the state of the world of course but im also optimistic that somethings gotta give. we just need to hang on, stay active in the fight against the man, and do our best to not make anything worse!

My thoughts on “Magicians Elephant”...

I watched this Netflix movie called “The Magician’s Elephant” yesterday with my kid. It was okay, definitely decent, but man... Kid you cheated your ass off. XD

First of all in NO way shape or form did you defeat that soldier literally IN NO SENSE OF THE WORD when you had the GALL to say to that dude’s face that you defeated him I almost wanted him to stab you right there just for being cocky and obviously wrong. The soldier conceded, he was NOT defeated. (And also just saying it kinda made like it was more about his book than anything and like okay I get that part/reminded him of his own childhood n all that but maybe add just a touch of “Oh crap I’m fighting a kid here what have I become, I gotta amend my ways and change my life” to it, make it clearer that the kid “won” by emotionally disarming him and making him change his mind bc that wasn’t totally apparent he just seemed rly obsessed with the book... XD?)

Second of all, kid did NOT fly. He fell with style, lmao. And that so-called death trap of a parachute shouldn’t have even managed that. I actually felt the need to tell my child, “Don’t ever try to do something like that. It will NOT work, you will just die.” And no I did NOT try and fail something similar as a kid attempting to recreate the Mary Poppin’s Umbrella thing from a thankfully much shorter height, thank you very much... 

Third of all, okay this one gets more of a pass but teeeeechnically the elephant made that lady laugh not the kid but eh yanno what that’s not that part I got issue with in this scene it’s how the Fiery Haired Sorceress steps in NO I’m totally cool with her giving him the help I don’t care if it’s cheating after the king makes it clear he disregards his life, I just think her just admitting that she’s helping him is a lil uncool for a Fiery Haired Sorceress. I think she shoulda said something cooler like, “Now never let it be said I don’t give my customers their coin’s worth~” Since the kid did accuse her of cheating him earlier.

Anyways other than that it only suffers from them trying to make the kids look cute and just making them look weird instead. XD

1 (favourite action film) - i might have to say speed tbh?? i think in terms of the most stereotypical action-y films i was really surprised i liked it as much as i did (cos usually i'm not the biggest fan of purely action stuff lol)

2 (film i could watch over and over and never get tired of) - back to the future trilogy 10000% lol... literally was thinking the other day i should rewatch them despite the fact they're ALWAYS on tv and i ALWAYS put them on even though i've seen them a million times lol!! they're just so good lol

3 (old school (pre 70s) film) - the ladykillers! it's a film from 1955 and it's just so funny lol i honestly love a lot of older films though!

4 (top 5 directors) - oh man this is gonna expose me as a film buff who doesn't rly know much about directors lol.... i'll probs just say peter weir is one of my favs? just cos the 4 films i've seen of his are absolute masterpieces... ohh and i also love a lot of park chan wook's films, they're just so strange and intense lol!

5 (favourite dead actor) - might be basic of me but maybe heath ledger? i think cos he died so young every time i see him i'm just so utterly amazed at how diverse of an actor he was!

6 (favourite 90's film) - ohhh man this is so hard cos i love SO many 90's films lol!!! i think i gotta go with hook though, cos to me the icon of the 90's was robin williams and that's one of my favs of his films! i quote it all the time, plus it's just so funny and heartfelt i just love it :')
