Pollution by the river (S01E04) – River Wey Navigation, Guildford

(fun fact: this one was the harderst one to pin down the exact location, I only knew bc of an article that the schooting took place by "Wey Navigation" which is a river long 32km (miles), I tried to find a better mention or through google maps comparing place for a long time but couldn't, finally I wrote to the River Way Navigation organization on facebook but they had no record of the shooting. Finally, in one of the photos I noticed that in the background there is a footbridge that I saw a photo of a similar footbridge while searching on a history of Wey Navigation river on the UK National Trust page and fortunately the previous mentioned facebook page knew where it was, WAHOO! :))

Fic: Relax
Read on Ao3
Fandom: The Last of Us (HBO)
Ship: Joel Miller x you (cishet f reader)
Tags/warnings: Soft!Joel, Acts Of Service Joel, pregnancy, implied sex, mention of panic attacks, JOEL IS A SOFTIE, SAPPY AND SOFT.
Summary: Joel just can't seem to ever relax, not even when he's settled with you.
Words: 971
A/N: Look, I can't be the only one who after this week's episode (S01E06) just wants to give Joel a simple and safe life </3
The front door opens, letting in Joel and a cold, snow-filled gush of wind. A shudder runs through you and you appreciate even more that you don’t have to be outside on a night like this but instead right here: in a sturdy, warm house, on a comfortable albeit rundown couch, a knitted blanket thrown over your lower body, a fire crackling merrily in the fireplace.
Joel stomps the snow off his boots and walks heavily up to the fireplace, crouching with a groan to release the load of firewood that he fetched. He immediately puts on particularly large log on the fire, then has to take a minute before he braces his hands on his knees and pushes himself up. You hear the crack from a joint, and put down your knitwork.
”Joel, please come and sit down, you’re working yourself too hard.”
”I’m fine,” he reassures you as he walks back to the door and kicks off the boots, hangs the coat up. A lot quieter on his feet in the thick wool socks you’ve made for him, he sneaks up behind the couch and bends over, kissing the crown of your head.
”You need anything, darlin’? Drink? Snack?”
”I need you to come and sit your ass down,” you tell him, reaching your arm back to grab the front of his sweater, giving it a little tug. He finally surrenders to you and comes around the couch, lifting your legs out of the way and placing them across his lap once he’s seaten.
”There,” he rolls his eyes at you, ”I’m seated. Now what?”
”Now you relax,” you tell him slowly, picking up your knitting needles again. ”You do know how to do that, don’t you?”
”No, I don’t,” he shakes his head seriously, but there’s a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
”Well, you need to start learning,” you rule, counting stitches before starting another row on the baby coveralls you’re working on. Joel runs his hand up your calf, knee, thigh, stopping at the swell of your belly.
”With this one arriving so soon? You won’t know what relaxing is once they’re born.”
You smile as you deftly work off the knits, glancing up at your husband for yet another quip, finding instead that he’s looking like you in That Way.
He’s always done it, even before he confessed to having feelings for you. After you became pregnant, he did it even more often. That look of infinite sadness, his eyes so despondent that it brings tears to your own, that way he looks at you like he’s already lost you.
”Joel…” You put down your project again and cover his hand with both of yours. ”Sweetheart. I’m good. We’re good.”
”For now.” He still can’t believe it, you’ve been safe in Jackson for years now, Tommy and Maria and their two kids next door, electricity and hot water and a friendly community, and he’s still expecting it all to go away.
”My brave man,” you sigh, scooting up, taking his hand and pulling him to you. ”Come here.” You rearrange yourselves, the blanket changes places, and Joel’s resting comfortably with his head on your shoulder, his arm coiled around your belly.
”My protector,” you mumble, stroking his gray hair. ”You’re going to put yourself in an early grave with all your worrying.”
It took him a long time to figure out that he didn’t actually have heart problems: he had panic attacks. They were easier to treat but harder for him to accept than an actual heart problem. Go figure that it would turn out that his heart is strong and fucking bleeding. All the things he’s done, failed to do, lost… he has told you everything, in the dark, entangled, only able to communicate to you in quiet whispers about his life leading up to the day he met you. All of that has made his heart so very strong, his self image so very weak.
”Too late for me to have an early grave,” he mutters, slowly caressing your bump. ”I’m an old man, darlin’.”
”Back in the day you wouldn’t call a man under sixty old,” you scoff. ”You have lived two lives, baby, that’s all.”
He grunts, but you feel him unwind in your arms. Him listening to your heartbeat always calms him down. You kiss his forehad, breathe in the smell of pine and snow on his hair.
”I need you,” you tell him in a whisper. ”You need to be here for me. For us.”
”I’m not going anywhere,” he promises, lifting his head to look at you. ”I need you, too. Both of you. You’re my everything.”
”And don’t you forget it.”
He shifts, mindful of your belly, and realigns himself so that he can kiss you.
”I love you,” he murmurs against your lips, the words a soft and balmy contrast to the sharp prickles of his facial hair. ”I love you so much.”
”And I love you, Joel,” you smile as his hand gently cups one of your breasts. Joel starts to scatter tender kisses down your neck, finding the first button of your flannel and popping it open, revealing a bit of cleavage. Your skin breaks out in gooseflesh when he presses his bristly face in the cleft between your boobs.
”You’re not relaxing,” you remind him, failing spectacularly in trying to sound stern.
”I can stop,” he quips, undoing another button. You exhale in a little whine as his lips brush over your nipple.
”Besides,” Joel muses without looking up, his breath hot on your budding nipple, ”you’re the one who never puts down your work. You’re always handling wool or yarn, or knitting… Maybe it’s you who needs to relax?”
He has a point, you have to give that to him.

IWTV 2022 INSP - The Most Dangerous Man in the World
Daniel: I told my editor I was meeting with the most dangerous man in the world. Gave him two choices. He came back with Bezos and Putin! Louis: I wasn't sure you'd remembered me. Your book makes no mention of our prior meeting. Daniel: Gritty memoir, drugs, humiliation, self-pity kind of thing. Mention vampires in one of those, readers tend to call bulls***. You've got your own hangar at the airport, privileges on the Royal Meydan Bridge, and zero presence online. I know the Emirates are big on privacy, and that's probably important to you, but I gotta ask: what does it cost, this haven't-aged-in-half-a-century, killer views in all directions anonymity? Louis: Quite a lot. I have to be very careful whom I let in. Daniel: Yeah, well, things didn't end well the last time, so forgive me if I'm a little nervous! Louis: Back in San Francisco, you said, and I paraphrase, "Give it to me. Make me a vampire now." Daniel: In the eyes of a 20-year-old, you were wasting the gift. Louis: You're in your 20s, Rashid. What do you think? Rashid: Well, Mr. du Lac presides in the most desired real estate in the country. I do not see the "waste" Mr. Molloy sees. Daniel: Yeah, well, he lived in a dump the last time we did this. Louis: I'd give it to you now.
– Interview with the Vampire, S01E01, S01E06
MY THOUGHTS & CC CREDITS
MY THOUGHTS
My contribution to @iwtvfanevents' Vampterview rewatch of IWTV Season 1! \(^0^)/ I basically rebuilt Loumand's Dubai Penthouse from scratch, cuz in my other post it was on the same lot as Loustat's 1132 townhouse. 🤭 And I decided to remake my Daniel & Rashid/Armand sims, cuz I was too lazy to crack open my old saves and save a copy of them to my bin. So...yeah, "a do-over," in Daniel's words. XD
I just love thinking about Louis' strange life as a billionaire mogul, and how AMC's nodding to the life he had with Armand in Miami & NYC in the books, and the life he now has with "Rashid" in Dubai. I have many suspicions about what went down to bring Loumand to Dubai, and where in the books' timeline we even are. I need answers, Rolin!!!!

S01E06 Wrench Missing Scene
~~! Five Years Ago !~~
Charlie hurried into the infirmary and stopped the first nurse he spotted. "Angus MacGyver. Is he here?"
"EOD Specialist?" she asked as her eyes skimmed the patch on his arm that proclaimed him part of EOD.
"That's him."
"He's down there, last door on the left."
He jogged down the hall, dodging a couple of slow-moving patients along the way, and then knocked a couple of times on the closed door. Without waiting for an answer, he cracked the door open and stuck his head inside.
The room was dimly lit and held two beds. The far bed was empty, and the closer one was occupied by his friend. Mac looked like shit. He was pale, even in the low light, and he exuded misery. His arm was thrown over his eyes, and he didn't move when Charlie entered.
"Hey, Mac," Charlie greeted quietly. "How are you doing?"
"Charlie?" Mac moved his arm and tried to sit up, but the movement must have been nauseating. He put one hand to his stomach and the other over his mouth as he swallowed hard.
"Should I get the nurse?"
"I'm okay," Mac replied quickly. He leaned back against his pillow and closed his eyes for a moment.
"You're looking a little green there, buddy."
Mac gestured to his head. "Mild concussion. I'll be out of here tomorrow."
Charlie nodded and pulled a chair closer to the bed. "What happened out there? Is Peña..."
Mac looked away, and Charlie watched as he seemed to shrink into himself, hugging his arms around his torso. "We got a call about a bomb inside a building. The robot broke down again, so Peña told me to fix it while he took care of the device. The radio fritzed out, and then," Mac paused to clear his throat, "there was an explosion."
Slowly reaching out, Charlie put a hand on Mac's shoulder and squeezed gently. "There was nothing you could have done."
"It should have been me," Mac whispered, tears falling in slow tracks down his cheeks.
"Don't say that."
Mac scrubbed his hands over his face and let out a shuddering breath. "I wish he'd given me the five minutes to fix the bot. I wish I knew what happened inside that building. I wish he was still here."
Charlie patted his shoulder, hoping he was offering some small measure of comfort. "I know, man, but Peña wouldn't want you to think like that. He knew what could happen out there in the sandbox."
"He was about to be a dad. Now-"
"Hey, you can't beat yourself up about this. Peña made the call to go inside the building, and you couldn't have changed his mind."
Mac shrugged off Charlie's hand and turned slowly onto his side with his back to Charlie. "I'm tired."
Sighing, Charlie stood and headed for the door. "Get some rest. I'll check on you tomorrow."
Mac didn't respond as Charlie stepped out of the room and quietly shut the door. He'd have to keep an eye on Mac for a little while to make sure that he'd be okay.

Yellowjackets S01E06 spoilers under the cut NOT FOR PRYING HOLLIGAY EYES
"Jackie just adored rabbits."
OH MY FUCKING GOD AND AN AVALANCHE OF THOUGHTS JUST CRASHED DOWN ON ME AND I'M TAKING YOU ALL WITH ME
I'd filed away that Shauna has A THING about rabbits. We've seen her kill two, going so far as to expertly skin, disembowel, butcher, and then make a chili out of the thing to serve to her family. (Who loved it when they had no idea what was in it, hello I see you clear parallel.)
Yet we've ALSO seen that Shauna has bunny shit absolutely everywhere, all these tchotchkes that didn't seem to fit. Not only in what we're gathering about her general lifestyle, but in her apparent relationship to rabbits. She hates them! Murderously! But she also cherishes them? Or at least the still, silent representations of them that can't eat her garden.
Couldn't make sense of it, but it was too obviously placed as a contradiction to not make note of it, so note it I did and moved on.
UNTIL NOW AND HOLY SHIT
JACKIE IS THE RABBIT. I've been wondering what happened to her (as I have everyone we haven't also seen in the 2021 timeline), but I feel SUPER confident now saying she's dead dead so fucking dead.
Shauna loves her. They've been best friends for how long?
Shauna is IN love with her. That much was obvious immediately, and is I believe 10000% the reason she hooked up with and later married Jeff. (Can't have the girl? Have the guy who can.)
Shauna hates her. This part I'm shakiest on right now, but if Jackie is the rabbit (JACKIE IS ABSOLUTELY THE RABBIT), then I know it's true. Maybe Shauna hates her because Jackie can't/won't/doesn't return her feelings. Maybe Jackie's kind of selfish and terrible sometimes. Shauna was going to (or was at least wrestling with) passing up Brown to go to whatever shitbag local university Jackie was going to, and was that because Shauna wanted to, or was pressured to, or felt obligated to, or...?
I don't know that piece yet, but I DO know people are complex and can be many things at once, and so even without filling in the details, I have zero problem accepting that Shauna loved and hated Jackie all at the same time.
Bringing us to today. Shauna cherishes the idea of the rabbit, enshrines it almost, while Shauna also kills and eats the rabbit.
So if Jackie is the rabbit (AND JACKIE IS WITHOUT A DOUBT THE FUCKING RABBIT), oh that bitch became dinner and I'd lay two shiny quarters that Shauna is the one who took the first bite.
Because how else to love Jackie, to take her in so completely, than literally consume her?
THAT IS FUCKED MY FRIENDS
THAT IS FUCKED UP AND I'M INTO IT
#oh shit oh shit #and a couple episodes ago where jackie DIRECTLY SAYS she's not cut out for all this #this isn't her world #the others can adapt and do what it takes to survive #jackie can't #the poison ivy #that means something too #not getting it right now but that's also symbolic of something filing that away too #anyway yes jackie basically ANNOUNCES IT THERE that she's doomed #oh man and what did the head coach say about her being team leader aahhh #gotta rewatch brb #'when things get tough out there those girls are gonna need someone to guide them' #GUIDE #not lead #because jackie isn't a natural leader it's painful whenever she tries #the leader is clearly taissa #guide though #influencer as he also says #fuck me yeah it's all right there #a guide shows the way #girl you were dinner before you ever set foot on that plane #ANYWAY SORRY I'M HAVING A LOT OF THOUGHTS IN THIS CHILIS TONIGHT
Edited to add: "JACK RABBIT" IT'S ALL JUST SITTING RIGHT THERE FUCK YOU GOODBYE

I will mention that in the commentary of this episode at this moment they do mention spit buckets and r*tching so be wary if you’re going to listen to that. Similarly, in the S01E01 commentary Reece mentions feeling s* when having had to scratch the dead skin off of David’s back.

S01E06 SAFE-ISH*
Nicola, throughout this and next episode, loses a lot of blood. She looks quite pale and sickly but does not v*.
[25:07-25:17] Maureen attempts to smother David after having taken some pills herself. When she realises that David is not home, she panics and tries to make herself v* by putting her fingers down her throat. The g*ing sounds are quite realistic so it may be triggering for some, but I honestly found the scene quite funny. She does not v* and instead falls to the floor as she attempts to do so.
S01E07 SAFE* [MENTION]
[13:33-13:38] Mrs Wren, after getting out of the car with Mr Jelly, says she’s had too much chocolate and feels s*, but she doesn’t v* nor is there any visual indication that she feels unwell.

S02E00 (HALLOWEEN SPECIAL) SAFE* [MENTION]
[14:05-14:15] Mr Jelly puts a wrapped-up beetle in his mouth thinking it’s a toffee. He realises very quickly what it really is and spits back into the wrapper as you would chewing gum. There’s no v*, he mostly just twists his face in a sort of disgusted confusion.
[46:16-46-20] David and Maureen get picked up in a car by a man. His wife is in the seat next to him, asleep. David asks what’s happened to her, and he replies that she gets cars*k. She doesn’t appear ill nor make any noises.
[48:29-48:35] When David tries to feel the woman’s pulse, he brings his hand back up covered in a red substance which he assumes is blood. Maureen asks if he’s alright and says he ‘looks a bit green’, he does not v*, he just looks a bit shocked.

David and Maureen attempt to kill Robin by feeding him peanuts, which he’s allergic to. However, rather than having an inflammatory reaction, he instead has a gastric reaction, and gets very ill. Luckily, he does not v*.

S02E04 SAFE*
David and Maureen go zorbing in this episode, which may get some worried, as they roll around a lot, but they come out completely fine and have a great time.
[2:50-3:03] However, straight after they finish, Mauren begins to have a coughing fit, and spits blood into her handkerchief. You don’t see the blood come out of her mouth, more so just hear her coughing and see the aftermath.

Star Trek TOS S01E06: The Naked Time
Original Thoughts
"[The episode], while it kinda made me uncomfortable cause it gave me pandemic vibes, DID get my attention with the concept of essentially losing your self-control was interesting. Spock’s private breakdown especially hit me since despite not watching it, I knew about his general personality and his half-human, half-Vulcan nature. It was performed very well by Leonard Nimoy and seeing him try to keep up the logical Vulcan demeanor and failing was really well done. "
(Original Post)
Rewatch Thoughts
I completely forgot that I'd written that post... wish I'd remembered when I wrote the last review... ah well!
Speaking of that last review, as I said, it's kind of funny how it worked out regarding the past three episodes. In The Enemy Within, we focus on Kirk as a bad thing happens to him, and we see if we can care about him. In The Man Trap, we focus on McCoy as bad things happen, and we see if we can care about him. I don't believe it was in any way intentional, but that's how it comes across to me. So that's two down, let's see if this will apply to Spock!
Despite my words above about being uncomfortable the first go round (I watched it in January 2021, so COVID was VERY much still happening), this was the episode that honestly convinced me that TOS was worth investing in. At that point I'd seen The Man Trap, Charlie X, and Where No Man Had Gone Before. None of which impressed me. This one finally did the job. I was actually kind of mad cause had I forced myself to get to this episode as a teen, I probably wouldn't have quit just 2-3 episodes in. This was the kind of crazy, exciting, and surprisingly insightful story that I had been waiting on, and it came just in the nick of time.
The concept of the episode is one that I think about a lot. Contracting a disease that completely removes your inhibitions. It can cause you to be taken over by your fears, your pride, your lust, just about anything. There are a lot of darker routes that the episode thankfully didn't go down, but it's still terrifying to think about. Sure, some of it is silly. Shirtless Sulu running around with a fencing sword and acting like a swashbuckler? By far the most fun scene in the entire episode. You could tell that George Takei was having fun XD The science officer at the start being overcome by fear and nearly killing himself, then dying on the operating table when he should be alive? That is utterly horrifying.
Things get chaotic quick. We actually get some excellent moments from both our three leads (okay two leads, but I can count McCoy at this point if I want to!) and the supporting cast. I believe that this is Chapel's first major appearance, as a matter of fact. We have Sulu with the fencing, of course. We have Uhura's response to being called a fair maiden. We have Scotty in full miracle worker mode, seriously that man doesn't get paid enough I swear. McCoy doesn't have as much that I can touch on as I will for Kirk and Spock, but the man managed to make a cure in a matter of hours while his staff were losing it, which essentially means he was doing everything himself for a good chunk of it. It's a good thing that he avoided getting infected, cause otherwise the Enterprise would have been royally screwed. Even the minor characters like Reilly, who will actually pop up again later, are pretty fun with his hijacking of the engines. It may have driven the bridge crew crazy, but it was fun for me~!
But speaking of Kirk and Spock...
You know one plus side to an episode focused on characters losing their inhibitions? It means that we, as the viewer, get to see the very rare vulnerable sides to characters that normally remain in check. We saw a bit from Kirk already in The Enemy Within, but we see here how frustrated and pressuring he can be. He's forcing Scotty to essentially pull off the impossible. There's a point where he snaps at Uhura, though he does apologize. He outright slaps Spock around to snap him out of his diseased state. Then when he gets himself infected, he mutters on about his devotion to the ship and how he can never have love because of it. He keeps it together long enough to let McCoy cure him, but it still says a lot. He's a man who is so devoted to his captaincy and the Enterprise that he feels that he can never love anyone else. He has a thing for Rand, but it can never be more than that. He has several relationships that we'll see that failed because in the end, his first love is the Enterprise. It's pretty sad when you think about it and how aside from McCoy and to an extent Spock, he can never allow it to show.
Then we come to Spock. Oh Dear Lord Spock. You know how he said in The Enemy Within that he's able to deal with his conflicting Vulcan and Human sides because he has the intelligence to do so? Yeah... he's not as capable as he'd like to think.
We've gotten to know Spock now. He's intelligent, logical, and very much efficient at his job as both Science Officer and First Officer. He's also incredibly blunt, rude, and as he especially made clear in Mudd's Women, finds humans and their emotions a pain to deal with. He has his reasons for being like this, and as this episode demonstrates, he has a LOT that he keeps suppressed.
When he gets infected due to Chapel's love confession (which apparently SNW explores more of this, but I haven't seen it yet so I can't comment), Spock slowly starts to break down. He gets into a conference room, repeating to himself that he is in control of his emotions, what his duty is, and even try to do math problems before he can't stop sobbing anymore. I think I read that Leonard Nimoy had to do this in one take, and if that's true... holy crap, now THAT is excellent acting! This is a scene of a man losing his control and breaking, something that I don't think that Spock has been able to do in a very long time and in this instance, he was forced into doing it.
This is a turning point for Spock's character, I think. We remember scenes like Mudd saying that Vulcans can't feel anything in Mudd's Women, a sentiment that Spock has repeated. We have him in The Enemy Within advising Kirk to keep the split secret from the ship to not cause unrest and, as I said, insisting that he can maintain his own two sides via his intellect. Now we see here that despite his cold, stoic demeanor, Spock does have emotions. Ones that he has bottled up due to his upbringing and the racist treatment that he'd received. He tries to act fully Vulcan, and that means expelling any human emotion. But he's still half human, and humans just can't bury their emotions away forever. Trust me, I've tried.
In that one instance, he can't contain it. He has guilt about never telling his mom that he loved her and likely also never being able to be Human enough for her, at least in his mind. He feels shame for the comradery he feels towards Kirk, by far the closest thing to a friend he has at this point. We saw just last episode how when it looked like Jim was going to be killed, he acted very emotionally and recklessly to try and save him. Which considering how Uhura pointed out to him earlier about his friendship with Jim and his coldness, it says a lot. He only calms down after getting it out of his system and hitting Jim hard enough to bust his lip. We never see him get hypo'd with the cure, so I assume that either McCoy or some other medical officer gave it to him off-screen. But if he hadn't been by the time he and Scotty are in the Engine Room, that means that he only pulled himself together long enough when Jim began to spiral for a plan that he thought was outright impossible.
I guess the short version of this is that this is the first time when we see that Spock has deeper layers than what he portrays. We'll learn more about why he's like this, but for now this is when Spock became a more three-dimensional character. This is where we truly see him struggle with his emotions and the shame that he's buried so deep down. Such shame that when he can't maintain control, all that he can do is cry. As someone who has also felt the need to suppress their feelings and feeling that kind of shame, I have a LOT of empathy for Spock. If this episode was indeed meant to get me to feel for him, it succeeded.
Anything else I need to touch on? There's the whole plot about a planet breaking up or something that causes weird time shenanigans at the very end. I... I'm just gonna leave it at that. We see the virus re-emerge in TNG... and imo to FAR less success, but I'll go into that whenever I reach TNG on this blog. Heaven knows that's not happening anytime soon. We have Chapel's first major role and her crush on Spock will pop up again later, which... meh, I don't have strong feelings about. Maybe because I'm too invested in shipping Spock with McCoy, but I guess when I hit SNW I'll see how things went prior to how they are here.
I think that's about it. Coming out of this rewatch, I enjoyed it as much as I did the first time! It's fun, it's wild, it's got some great character insight moments, it's a really solid episode. Like I said, had I made it to this one years ago I very well may have stuck with TOS and been invested much sooner. But hey, I guess better late than never. It's nice when I go through episodes I didn't care for and grow a new love for them (The Corbomite Maneuver, The Man Trap), but it's also good to just watch an episode I already liked and get to enjoy it all over again. That's all you need sometimes~

Assy McGee #20: “Squirrels” | July 07, 2008 - 12:30AM | S02E14
Assy ends tonight. In this one, Assy breaks up an underground Squirrel Fighting Ring after getting over his intense fear of squirrels. He in fact conquers his fears to such an extent that the climax of the episode (and the series, as it turns out) is him squaring off with a giant, genetically modified squirrel.
On the way we get a hunting trip where Assy browbeats Sanchez into drinking duck piss, a shirtless chief, covered in tats, and a few things that actually made me laugh a little. Assy somberly telling Sanchez “I love killing birds,” the dumb exchange between Sanchez and the Chief after Sanchez sees a framed photo of him playing Twister with Gerald Ford: (Sanchez: “Is that you with President Ford?” Chief: “Yeah, that’s me!”), the part where Assy is so spooked at the sight of the squirrel carcasses in the flophouse that his buttcheeks begin quivering. It probably doesn’t sound incredible, but there’s more than usual to like in this episode.
I did not watch Assy McGee season two at all when it premiered (I think; if I contradicted something I already said, go with the other thing). In 2008, I was probably still a touch adverse to comedy involving squirrels. There was a rotating list of nouns that whenever I heard them used in supposed-to-be-funny dialogue or visuals it would set me off. I called them “stock absurdities”, and they’d force me to sit on my hands and scowl in response. I probably arrogantly dressed down many children who were simply trying to have a fun time online.
Now that I’m a 40 year old man (in a few weeks, yikes), I can admit I was a bit of a handful who took his own posts way too seriously. I probably wasn't even all that funny. But at the time, maaaaybe I had a point? It seemed like people could very easily garner laughs by just mentioning monkeys, squirrels, cheese, pirates, ninjas, or robots. I’m sure I’ve harped on this already on this blog, so I’ll stop, abruptly.
This concludes my coverage of Assy McGee, which should not have had 20 episodes. I did just do a quick-and-dirty list of my top ten. If you are good at math, you’ll realize that this is half of the series. Some of these aren’t that good, but had enough memorable jokes that they made the cut. I’m not sure how to rank these, but I’ll tell you the strongest episode on the list is “The Flirty Black Man”, and the weakest is “Irish Wake”:
S01E01: Murder by the Docks
S01E02: The Flirty Black Man
S01E04: Busted
S01E06: Conviction
S02E02: Pharmassy
S02E03: Mile High Mayhem
S02E06: Irish Wake
S02E07: Vowel Play
S02E08: Hands Up
S02E14: Squirrels
As you can see, Assy joins Twin Peaks in the pantheon of shows where season two falls off dramatically, but comes back strong towards the end. "strong", I says. RIP Assy. For better or for worse, I was the only one who truly understood you.
MAIL BAG
Do you think you could beat a kangaroo in a fight should it come to that (your allowed to lie) also the kangaroo is dressed up as space ghost
I would have serious trouble fighting my hero Space Ghost Coast to Coast, but, no, those things are vicious and I am not strong at all and I'm also very scared all the time. It would be a little comforting if the kangaroo delivered the monologue from the end of "Banjo", but I just found out that kangaroos can't speak English, which is sobering to say the least.

He cries while talking, looking down for a second: I just know that when I wake up,
He talks more loudly and frowns slightly, saying: I've lost somethin'.
Camera switches to Tommy, a white man with a long face, medium length, dark, curly hair and a mustache. He looks down sadly, as Joel continues: I'm failin' in my sleep. That's all I do.
Back to Joel, he tears up more, widening his eyes a bit: It's all I've ever done.
Lastly, he frowns a bit more, talking in a more stern tone: Is fail her, again and again. /End id ]

Saving each other (Tommy Shelby x OC)
A/N: I made this for @peakyswift 900 followers celebration! First of all, Congratulations Mae!! 🎉🎈🎊 This is huge and I’m happy to know your content is being delivered to 900 people, here’s to many more! It’s the very first time I participate in any followers celebration, it was fun to do and I had this idea as a draft before, but it felt perfect to use the prompt I chose. (I’m sorry I’m behind the schedule!!) 🙈
Master list
Pairing Tommy x OC Rosie Owen (Danny Whizz Bang’s widow)
Warning: (Almost) se-ual abuse mentioned. But nothing graphic. And it got kind of little bit long.
Prompt: “You don’t have to pretend to be fine with me.”
Note: This is set at the end of season one and the beginning of season two, if you remember during S01E05 Dany Whizz Bang apparently gets killed by Tommy over some Italians revenge. Danny mentioned Rosie and his kids there. Then he reappeared on S01E06 when the Peaky Blinders are fighting against Billy Kimber and he gets killed while defending Tommy from Kimber, after that, his kids are mentioned again. I felt like Tommy wouldn’t leave them on their own.
Special Thanks: @alreadybroken-ts & @lyarr24 For the suggestions and help! 🤗
Rosie kept thanking Jeremiah as they made their way inside the house. She went to him for help last night when her brother in law tried to force himself on her. He demanded to marry her since according to him, they should follow the family tradition that dictated that a widower or single man could take his deceased brother’s wife as his. She managed to scape with her three children from her house after hitting him on the head. The church was the safest place she could think of and Jeremiah immediately took them in for the night, offering food and a warm bed. She still felt disgusted and shocked of thinking about it.
“The Lord will give you hard times, but he will also give you the strength and resources you need to conquer it.” He assured as he closed the front door. “You will be safe here.” Danny’s children looking up at him. “There’s food for you and I brought some clothes for the boys.”
She couldn’t believe all the help Tommy Shelby was providing, first, the Midland Hotel room he had arranged for them, now a day later, a house outside Birmingham with everything they might be needing. Jeremiah mentioned Tommy wanted to keep them safe, no one else knowing where they were staying.
“You didn’t have to go into all that trouble, but thank you Jeremiah. Thank you, and tell Tommy how thankful I am.”
“No trouble at all sister, Danny wouldn’t allow this either.”
He then proceeded to show them around the house, general instructions, and also mentioned there should be some of Ada’s clothes for her.
“Make yourself at home, I will try to visit you in a couple of days. And boys, take care of your mamma.”
Danny Jr, Jacob and Ezra nodded eagerly their heads. Watching them and how grown up they were her (no longer little) men, she felt her heart full, finally feeling more calm and secure now.
That night, Rosie and the kids prayed for their father’s memory, and included Jeremiah and Tommy in their prayers for all the help they had provided. They always struggled with the income, the soldier’s wage Danny received after the war helped them with some bills, but he was never the same again, he had nightmares and went through strange mood changes she never got to understand, he would scream out of nowhere and then start crying. She worked at the post office during the war, after that she got a job in the nearest hospital at the administrative department, but since Danny’s passing, she had to quit it to be home with the kids, she knew how to sew so she got some money from it from time to time, she also visited an elderly aunt to take care of her for a few hours and she paid some good money, it was enough to feed her children, but times were though and even thought her brother in law’s proposal of taking her as his wife disgusted her, deep down she knew her sons could have a better life, Rosie was willing to make the sacrifice for them, but as soon as Howard tried to force himself on her, she knew she wouldn’t do it. She just couldn’t.
“Mum?” Daniel’s voice brought her back, his brothers were already sleeping.
“What my love?” She caressed his hair, he looked a lot as Danny.
“Someone’s knocking downstairs.”
Rosie tensed up immediately. “Stay here, close the door.”
“No, I’m coming with you.” He tried to get up from the bed, all four of them cramped together, it was much better than the small bed in their house.
“Stay with your brothers, please, I will just take a look by the window.” She left the room and took the oil lamp with her, she could hit whoever it was in the head with it.
Her heart stopped when she heard the doorknob unlock. Jeremiah had locked it all, she saw him. Walking down the stairs, she found a vase on the table next to her, with shaky hands, she put her arms up in the air, ready to defend herself and her children.
“Rosie it’s me… Tommy, Danny’s comrade.” He looked at her shocked, his hands in front of him then, as soon as he got rid of the flat cap, heard her cry.
Tommy took the vase from her hands and went on to check on her.
“Everything’s alright, Rosie, Rosie, look at me.” He felt her body trembling.
“I thought it was a thief or my brother in law.” She admitted after a few seconds, Tommy put his arms around her at some point. But as her breathing calmed, he realized that she was just wearing a light nightgown, it must have been Ada’s since it looked shorter on Rosie…her chest against his touching as she tried to get air in, her scent reminded him of a field full of flowers. Clearing his throat and pushing the thoughts of her body pressing to his aside, he put an arm distance between them.
“Just wanted to make sure you and the kids are alright.” She tried to cross her arms over her chest, suddenly thinking how exposed she was in front of him.
“Thank you for all of your help.” Biting her lip, she looked down. “You were a great friend to Danny.”
“We weren’t friends… we’re family, and that’s what families do. Take care of each other.”
Taking her shall from the couch, she covered her back and front with it. Tommy looked at his watch, he shouldn’t have shown up unannounced, after the trouble she had been in.
“Would you like to eat something? I cooked.” She offered gently, not looking directly at him.
Tommy examined her for a moment; her hair was tucked in a braid, rebel dark curls sticking out, pale skin, in contrast with the color of her lips, blood flowing through them for the constant lip- biting tic. “I would like that.” His voice low.
As Rosie moved, they heard steps walking down the stairs. “Mum?”
“Danny go back to sleep.” The eight-year-old kid popped his head inside the room, noticing Tommy’s presence. He corrected his posture and gave him a proper soldier salute, his hand up on his forehead. Like his father would do.
“At ease, soldier.”
“Sergeant. Thank you for your help.” Tommy looked in Rosie’s direction extending his hand to shake Daniel’s.
“I had to tell him you offered to help us.”
He took the kid by the shoulders, leaning in to look straight into his eyes. “You father was a good man, make sure your brothers remember that. Go upstairs now.”
Tommy followed Rosie into the kitchen in silence. He took one of the berries in the basket, it was full of fruits and vegetables, thanking her when she passed his plate.
“Whatever the boys and you need, please take it.” She stood there, in front of him intertwining her fingers. “But if you need anything else, there’s a phone in the living room, say my name and they will connect the phone call.”
“Thank you, Mr. Shelby.”
“You can call me Tommy.” Rosie nodded, she felt uneasy alone with another man in the same room. Especially someone that walked in like a tornado. “And this is the best dinner I’ve ever had.”
Rosie smiled a little bit at that.
No longer after that, Tommy promised to stay in touch and assured Rosie one more time that he would help them in any possible way. After he left, Rosie stayed in the living room for some time, reading a book that caught her eye from the shelves, but her mind couldn’t focus on anything else than that man. She knew what he did for a living, she knew all of the things the Peaky Blinders were involved in. But this Tommy was different from any of that, although she couldn’t quite read him, something that didn’t match with the scary gangster she heard about all the time. Tommy was friends with Danny, he had died over a war with Kimber, and Tommy had been helping her family all of this time. Was it guilt? Pity? Or another kind of interest? He could be very intimidating. Confused and mentally drained, she felt tired and went to sleep with her boys.
***
“Ezra please, stop jumping… you can fall.” Rosie tried to reason with her youngest son, but his laugh filled the room.
“But mamma this is fun!” He landed on his butt and his laugh grew louder.
“Mum! Danny said a bad word!” Jacob complained, then screamed when his oldest brother pulled his ear.
After having the hardest negations with her kids, Rosie sighed and turned around only to jump when she found Tommy leaned against the doorframe. Pressing her hand to her heart she said: “Fuck, you scared me.”
Tommy looked surprised to hear her cursing.
“Mum! You said the bad word!” Ezra pointed.
“I’m sorry!” She tried so hard to be a good example for them.
Tommy arched an eyebrow. “I knocked, but you were busy with the party starting.” Without an invitation, he walked towards the kids. “I brought some things, clothes, toys, books.” The three boys sorting through the bag with excitement, smiling wide, thanking him.
Taking the flat cap from his head, his eyes were searching for Rosie, “There’s another bag for you downstairs, whatever you like, you can take it.”
“Mr.-“he interrupted her, a warning in his eyes. “Tommy… you don’t have to do that, allowing us to stay here is more than enough.”
“There’s a ball, if you want to take it outside.” Ignoring her comment, he suggested and the boys looked at their mother, smiling even more to get her approval, running off before she even finished saying yes. “We were pretty much like that, they make me go back in time, thinking about the time when Arthur, John and me played together. We didn’t have much, we played with tree branches, I would made a ball out of newspapers…” He shared with her, hiding his hands inside the pockets of his pants. “Maybe I could bring Finn with me next time.” He walked towards the window. “So you could have a time to enjoy yourself as well, you could use a break from all your worries.”
All of his attentions to her and her children weren’t just because, he wanted sex just like any other man. What other reasons could he have? Was that all she could hope for? Quietly, she shook her head while her eyes filled with tears.
He was looking at the window until his eyes moved back to Rosie. Tommy gasped in surprise as he found her undressing in front of him. “What are y-“
“Just making it easy for you, so you can take what you want and leave.” She said under her breath, tears running down her cheeks. Defeated, she couldn’t fight it anymore. Eventually it would happen with Howard, Tommy or the next man offering help.
Tommy couldn’t stop his gaze roaming down her body as the turquoise dress she was wearing was pooled around her hips, her torso covered in a silky undergarment, her breasts peaking up, he couldn’t control the hardness inside his pants. He was looking at her in a way a man shouldn’t look at his deceased friend’s wife.
It took him a few seconds to fully understand her words, taking off the jacket of his suit, he placed it over her, covering her front. “Rosie, I do bad things you know that, but I would never disrespect you.”
“The only way I can repay you all of this is with my bod-“
“Stop it.” One of his fingers touched her lips. “I’m not asking you to pay anything.” They were soft against his skin.
“Then why are you doing all of this?” She had thought he also wanted to bang the widow, all of his attentions for nothing in return?
“I want to help you and the boys selflessly.” His hands squeezed her shoulders. “I know what happened with your brother in law, I’m sorry you went through something like that, but all I’m asking you is to accept my help.” He was relieved she managed to scape before anything else happened.
“You don’t want to take advantage of my situation?” Her voice trembling as she said the words out loud.
Shaking his head hi felt his heart heavy. “Only a fucking sick bastard would do something like that.”
Embarrassed, she looked away from him, biting the inside of her cheeks. Tommy placed his hands on her shoulders, caressing her gently, he was sincere when he spoke.
“You don’t have to pretend to be fine with me.”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” The weight of the world fell from her shoulders, she had known almost every man that approached her tried to get close for a quick fuck, to help her release the tension as they said. She tried to cover her face with her hands as Tommy kept comforting her. “It’s all been too much.”
“I know.” The sweet scent from her hair invaded his system. “But you are a strong woman.” Her vulnerability made him want to protect her at all costs.
“I’m sorry.” She had mixed his real intentions and she felt bad for that.
Over the course of the following weeks, Tommy visited them several times, always making sure they had everything they needed, even more. He took the time to listen to the boys and answer their questions, he seemed amazed by their curiosity and patiently explained everything about his horses when the kids asked about them, his eyes lit up when he mentioned the races and the different breeds he owned.
“I could show you how to ride someday.”
“Really?” Asked Daniel, total surprise in his face.
“Can I ride too?” Little Ezra asked him, he was only five years old.
“Course you can.”
Rosie looked at the four of them with a worried look. “Tommy, I don’t know…”
“Mum please!” Jacob tugged at her skirt.
“We will behave.” Daniel promised.
Tommy laughed, his eyes on her. The three boys looked at her to seconds later they began to share knowing glances.
She started pacing the room. A small smile started spreading across her lips.
Tommy saw them approaching her in silence, walking slowly until they began to run towards Rosie, trying to be the first one to get to her, their laughing filling the room. Little Ezra came last in the race, but the three boys starting kissing their mom loudly, fighting to kiss her on the same spot the other brother just kissed her. Tommy felt his heart ache, there was so much love in there, the purest feelings showing.
They just had enough money to eat, had to give up the things they owned, she had a huge problem with her brother in law, but none of that seemed to matter, as long as they had a chance to shower their mother with kisses.
“They can be very convincing.” She admitted kissing the top of their heads, the smile was now lighting her face.
“Alright boys, I will make the arrangement with your mum, now go and have a bath, one of you stinks.”
“It’s Ezra!” Jacob yelled as they ran upstairs.
“Am not.”
“Tommy, I don’t want to cause you problems.”
He got up. “You’re not trouble Rosie, nobody knows you’re here, let me take them to see the horses, will make them good. They could use a distraction, you guys have been under so much, let me help you.”
“I heard them talk about you one night, said you were close to their dad, they really look up to you.”
He held the cigarette between his fingers, not lighting it yet. His eyes looked at her surprised.
“They do, you have given them so many things they wouldn’t be able to have, the wood horses are their favorites. The shoes you gave them, they don’t even want to wear them, said it would get dirty.”
“They are good kids, they deserve everything.” There was a tight lump in his throat.
At the beginning he only did it for the kids, his friend’s sons. But over the last couple of days, Tommy had the opportunity to talk with Rosie some more, her kindness wasn’t saved just for the kids, she had baked some biscuits and sent the boys to the neighbors with a basket full. She instructed to give them to strangers too, said since she was receiving all of that help, she had to pass it on. She made food for his family too and made sure he left the house with five jars of jam and the bread she made. A fruit pie as well. She was a devoted mother, made sure the boys had good manners, she was smart and curious, she fixed everything that needed to be repaired around the house, he had to admit he admired her, the way she gave herself away completely.
The last couple of days, he had been able to see a side of her he didn’t know, she was opening up to him and started to realize how important she had become, how her laugh made him smile, how the slightest involuntary touch they shared started a fire inside of his body.
He didn’t know how to put into words the feelings he had been developing for Rosie.
Could he leave Grace behind? Would Rosie be able to look at him different and not just as the friend of her deceased husband?
Tommy cleared his throat.
“I will be busy the next couple of days, in London.” He said and a glimpse of sadness crossed her eyes.
“Don’t worry we will be fine.” She was stronger than she seemed, so calm, ready to take whatever life threw in her way.
They stayed in silence for a while. Rosie looked from his eyes, to the floor. Not scared, she seemed as if trying to hide her eyes from him, like he would find something else there.
“I was getting used to see you every day.”
“Me too.” She added in a low, but soft tone.
“Rosie?” Stepping forward he dared to get closer to her. She let out a little gasp when he approached her, was it fear? Shame? Or something else? “I will make sure your brother in law leaves you alone.” He wanted to confess the feelings he recently discovered, but he had been hurt by Grace’s lies. It was hard to trust and open his heart again.
A worried expression crossed her face “What are you going to do?”
“Don’t you worry ‘bout it.”
“Tommy.” She put a hand over her heart. He hated to admit it, but loved the way she said his name. “I don’t want you to get in trouble because of me.”
“I have contacts, I will be fine.” She saw his eyes scanning her face, not realizing when did he get that close to her body. “I really would like to take you and the boys to see the horses someday, would you be okay to go after I finish business in London?”
His voice was like a sweet melody, deep, captivating. And she found herself nodding, the thought of her boys enjoying a day out with horses made her smile. Tommy’s hand caressed her arm.
Tommy leaned in, she held her breath. What was this? The Small Heath Devil showing feelings for her? His fingers lifted her face by the chin. His gaze looking intensely at her, not even blinking. She was allured by the way he was looking at her, pulling her in.
“Mum! Ezra is making a mess with the water!” Jacob informed her from the top of the stairs, breaking their almost contact. Closing her eyes, she sighed loudly.
“Think they will flood the house?” He laughed.
“I hope not… have to go. Thank you… for everything.” She said before disappearing upstairs.
***
Rosie had been wondering for days if Tommy had kissed her if her sons didn’t interrupt them. She was beyond thankful for the help Tommy had been giving them, she felt safer than ever and her boys had left behind the complicated days they had been through because of their uncle.
Despite being a gangster, Tommy was a good man, he immediately jumped in to offer his help, he was good to her children and to her. It’s been two years since Danny’s death, she had been vulnerable and one step behind the breaking point while he had been nothing but good, helping in every possible way. The moment he entered the house, he made sure he left the guns by the door, as well as his imposing presence, once inside, he became the warm and soft man her sons looked up to. And she couldn’t stop thinking about the kiss they almost shared.
“Mum a car pulled outside.” Daniel entered the kitchen breathless.
Waking up from her daydream, she rushed to the window, Jeremiah walked around the car and opened a door. Two more men were with him.
“My God, Tommy!” She saw him leaning against Jeremiah, he was in a bad state. Walking outside, she found him groaning and puffing. “What happened?”
“Take the kids inside, I will explain in a minute.” She followed Jeremiah’s instructions, her heart aching every time she looked at Tommy. He was being carried by the men.
His face was swollen, his right eye completely closed, bruises and cuts decorated his face and hands. He couldn’t stand by himself. It was so hard to watch Tommy in such bad state, her heart felt heavy, worried for him.
“We had to get him outside the hospital, they might have killed him any moment, the only safe place I could think of was here.” She barely heard Jeremiah’s explanation, she was in shock.
“It looks worse than really is, don’t worry.” He was tired for the minimum effort he did, but Tommy even tried to manage a small smile her way.
“I really can’t stand his jokes.” Said a thin, tall man.
“You need to learn to laugh at yourself Charlie.” Tommy groaned from the couch.
Little Ezra hold her legs tight, his eyes focused on the beaten man. Her mother instinct suddenly alert for her children, she assured the boys it was just an accident and that Tommy would be alright, which he confirmed between pain groans. Jeremiah offered to watch the boys for a while and Charlie to fill the tank, leaving the two of them alone in the living room.
“Did you get me telegram?” He moved his good eye around, looking for Rosie. Shit that hurt too.
Rosie got a piece of clean cloth with warm water, then got on her knees in front of where he was lying and kindly cleaned his face. Tommy’s good eye on her all the time, it was nice to see her that close to his face, worried, taking care of him.
“Jeremiah mentioned something came up, said you were running late, I never imagined you like this.” She heard him chuckle then make a complain noise from the pain.
“What did you want it to say? Some bastards took me by surprise and beaten the shit outta me?” He joked. Sabini’s men caught him off guard.
“At least let me know what happened, to be prepared, when I saw you getting out of the car I… I” Gently, she applied some balm on his wounds.
She couldn’t say the words out loud. His fingers moved the trail of hair on her forehead, covering her eyes.
“You what? Hmm?” despite the pain, he gave her a smile.
“Nothing.”
“Liar. I can see it in your eyes.”
She lost her voice, just thinking about him get hurt.
“I’m alright.” He tried to assure her.
“You don’t have to pretend to be fine with me.” Rosie repeated the words he told her once.
He chuckled and winced by the pain. “It hurts, okay? But I felt better the minute I saw you.” Tommy tried to straighten up in the couch, leaning on his elbow. “One thing has been playing on me mind when they started kicking me… I was so scared of dying without tasting your lips.”
Trying not to hurt him, Rosie kissed him gently, one of her hands around his ribs to hold him, the other one caressing his cheek. Slowly, taking their time to know each other’s mouths. Then moving that hand to his chest, she could feel the cut on his lips, he tasted like tobacco, his mouth devouring her lips, memorizing the feeling, shaking away the fear she felt. Holding her face as closest as she could be, feeling her soft lips spreading a healing balm all over him. Both of them thinking how this might not be happening.
Neither of them could stop the feelings they were developing for each other, their interest grew naturally, Tommy loved her children and she enjoyed every moment Tommy shared with her kids. After spending time together for a while, they couldn’t deny any longer they liked being together. Both curious and hopeful to see where those feelings would lead them.
“I will take care of you.” she said when he pulled away, tired of making the effort to sit straight. Rosie arranged some cushions behind his back. A cocky smirk forming on his lips.
“So… you care about me?” he stopped her when Rosie tried to get up.
“After all you have done for us, it means so much how you care about my sons…”
“I really didn’t want to be involved in their lifes, to keep them away from what I do, but honestly, after this I cannot be away from you.”
“Tommy, there’s Peaky blood running inside of them, no matter what you do.”
He had to be honest with Rosie, when Danny died, they didn’t mention the details.
“There is something you should know… Danny defended me with his own life.” His eyes focused on her hands, holding his.
“I knew, he constantly dreamed you were in danger and he wasn’t there for you. In the very end, he saved your life.” Finding the courage to see her, he didn’t know what to say.
A beautiful silence filled the space between them. Each one of them, making their own peace with the past that had united them. Thanking for the opportunity in their hands.
“Are you okay with that?”
“He saved your life, you saved ours, I think you should be at hand.”
Nodding is head, his fingers touched her cheek. “You are saving mine.” Unable to sit properly, he pulled her down to his mouth.
***
“Mum look” Ezra looked ecstatic riding one of Tommy’s horses, Curly holding the reins.
Rosie smiled while leaning on the fence. “I’m looking.” His hair moving with the air.
“That’s easy, you have a short horse.” Jacob pointed.
Daniel following them on his own horse.
They looked better than ever, constantly laughing, enjoying their childhood.
“Tommy look!” Daniel showed them how well he controlled the horse.
“One day you will be the best horse rider and make me win the races.” He assured him, then took Rosie’s hand and walked to the stables. He had fully recovered by now and couldn’t keep his hands away from her. Once inside, Tommy pushed her against the wall to kiss her.
“You promised me a horse ride.”
“Oh, I was lying, but you already knew that, ey?” his lips on her neck, while his hands found their way under her clothes, running his fingers over her thighs.
“Tommy!” her laugh filled his ears. Trying to wriggle out, he held her tight.
“I’m hoping the horses will make them tired.” His hands traveling down her body. He made her feel secure, safe, loved.
“Yeah good luck with that.” She caressed his strong forearms.
Walking next to her, he showed her a new horse, beautiful dapple grey with dapples of a lighter shade. “I got this beauty a few weeks ago, we will have to think of a name that fits her, it’s yours.”
Turning around to face him, total surprise on her face. “Tommy.” She managed to said, Rosie was speechless, all she could do was kiss him, showing him how grateful she was. He made the proper introductions and helped her to sit on the horse, following her, his hands holding her figure.
“Life is just beautiful up here.” He made the horse start moving and soon they were out of the stables. Following the kids up to the hills.
They spent a lot of time riding Tommy’s horses, he showed Rosie and the kids how good they were and all the love and healing they had to give. It helped them all heal at their own pace, their own time, the kids were so excited when they found out their mum was seeing Tommy. It had made easier the process of trusting him, making them all bond over something that felt so natural.
Tommy held the reins on one hand, while the other hugged her waist from behind, his chin resting on her shoulder.
“There is an old saying that horses heal the soul.” She had learned a lot of his passion for horses.
Tommy brushed his lips against her skin. “They are a reflection of our own souls, help us free our spirit, when we ride them, they allow us to borrow their freedom.” His voice was a warm whisper. “They will bring out the best in you.”
They rode to the hills enjoying the journey, the beauty of the sighting around them, the warmth of the horses, the breathtaking of the moment, as simple as that. It was all they needed.
That morning they visited Danny’s grave, an emotional moment for all of them, each thanking Danny Owen for the man he had been, for his children, his kindness, for bringing Rosie into Tommy’s life, and Tommy into hers, and her children. They couldn’t be in better hands.
Saving each other’s lives in the process.

Chapter 2: There’s Something at the Door
Jaskier’s welcome to Kaer Morhen isn’t quite as dramatic as he was expecting. Only a man that could be no other than Vesemir is there when they arrive. The older witcher spots them as they enter through the door, standing up from his seat near the fire and placing his book aside to greet them.
“Eskel!” The older witcher calls, welcoming, as they enter the main hall.
It’s huge, Jaskier thinks. The ceilings are high, and just from where he’s stood in the entryway Jaskier can see the fireplace lounge area, the dining table, stairs leading up, and a large storage room at the far back of the next hall.
Jaskier pulls his attention from the impressive area and his jaw off the floor to focus instead on the man walking up to them with a big smile and his arms held out wide. Vesemir’s hair is long, though not as long as Geralt’s, and silver. He looks about sixty, but Jaskier knows that the man must actually be much older.
Jaskier’s heard a lot about him, even just on their trip to Ard Carriagh and then up the mountain. Vesemir feels like some sort of legend to him. He raised Eskel and the others, taught them all they know about swordplay, and still makes sure they stay up to date in their knowledge to fight as best they can. He cares for them when they’re home— he’s their father. Jaskier doesn’t exactly feel worthy.
Vesemir pulls Eskel into his arms and holds him tight. He envelops Eskel with his arms thrown over his shoulders, like Eskel is a child, and Eskel tucks his face against his father’s shoulder. Even with Jaskier’s heart beating like a rabbit’s with nerves, he’s not out of it enough to not notice how sweet they are. They’re obviously close. Jaskier’s just a bit jealous, but mostly he’s happy for them— not everyone is so lucky as to get along so well with their kin. Jaskier hopes that he and Vesemir can get along even a fraction as well as he does with his sons.
He shuffles on his feet, uncomfortably aware that Vesemir hasn’t so much as looked his way. He really wants Eskel’s father to like him. His nerves fray more and more with every second he waits for Vesemir to acknowledge him until he feels like one big ball of nervous energy.
The witchers pull back from each other, and Eskel gives Vesemir a strong pat on his shoulder. “Good to see you again, son.” And then Vesemir’s golden gaze finally turns to Jaskier. “Ah, and who is this?”
Jaskier’s entire body is on fire. He slaps on a big stage-worthy smile and sticks out a hand. He can only pray that Vesemir doesn’t notice the tremor in it, but Jaskier knows better than to think he can hide anything from a witcher. The shake is due equally to anxiety and excitement, and he knows Vesemir can sense both easily. “Jaskier. Pleased to make your acquaintance!”
Vesemir smiles knowingly at him— Oh gods, he’s already figured Jaskier out— and takes his hand, his grip firm and professional. He shakes their hands once up and down and then lets go. Jaskier lets his hand fall back to his side and has to work very hard not to fidget. Still, he rubs two fingers together, a nervous tick he’s never been able to break.
Eskel places a gentle hand on Jaskier’s upper back and nods. “He’s a bard. I met him on the path this summer.” He turns to Jaskier, smiling. “We’ve been travelling together since.” Jaskier smiles back, relieved for his support.
“Yes, Eskel is very good company,” Jaskier settles a hand on Eskel’s lower back, briefly, in return, and then turns his focus back to Vesemir. “I’m very lucky to have met him.” From the corner of his eye, he can see that Eskel’s gaze remains on him. His witcher rubs near imperceptibly at his back, then turns back to his father.
Vesemir looks between them, still smiling pleasantly, then settles on Jaskier. “Nice to meet you, Jaskier. It’ll be good to have you with us.” Some of Jaskier’s anxiety finally melts away. The old witcher gestures toward the crumbling walls that Jaskier can see in the large storage room behind Vesemir. “Hope you’re not shy of a little hard work.” He winks, and his lips spread into a grin.
“Vesemir,” Eskel groans, “Jaskier’s our guest. He doesn’t need to do any of our chores.”
“No, it’s quite alright!” Jaskier hurries to say, holding his hands up. “I’m very grateful that you are accommodating me, and of course I’ll do anything I can to help!” He opens his mouth to spew more appeasements, frantic to be accepted, but then shuts it with a click. Don’t be desperate, Jask.
Vesemir laughs heartily and slaps Jaskier on the arm. Jaskier yelps as he’s knocked into Eskel, their shoulders bumping, but grins, hesitantly eager, nonetheless. “Hah! I like this one, Eskel.” He squeezes Eskel’s bicep this time. “Nice job.”
Jaskier deflates like a balloon as Vesemir walks away, a groan leaking out with his breath. Eskel chuckles fondly and pulls Jaskier into a one-armed side hug.
“Relax, Jaskier,” He murmurs into his ear, “He loves you. All of them will, Jask, really. They’ll be glad to have a new face around the keep. You’ve got nothing to worry about, sunshine.”
Jaskier wants to believe Eskel very much, so he nods. “Yeah, I’m the best. Obviously.” He melts into the embrace, stepping forward to turn it into a full hug, tucking his face into Eskel’s shoulder. The witcher doesn’t respond to his joke other than to wrap his other arm around Jaskier and hold him.
Jaskier’s thoughts drift and he finds himself wondering if it really is just his witcher that’s averse to strangers. No, not his— Geralt. He wonders if it’s just Geralt who’s averse to strangers. Eskel and he had a friendly, two-way conversation the very first time they met, and Vesemir was immediately welcoming when they arrived. Had everything that Geralt told him about a witcher’s caution just been another lie? It seems so. In fact, it seems to be the cherry on top of what is quickly growing into the mountain of untruths that Geralt had told him.
“We should get settled,” Eskel suggests, shooing away Jaskier’s unhappy thoughts effortlessly. Jaskier is led upstairs with a hand laid on his lower back, and is once again thankful for Eskel in every possible way.

“That sounds. . . entertaining.” Commander Cody to Obi-Wan Kenobi, TCW S02E05: Landing at Point Rain. I love these two idiots so much.
“When have I ever let you down?” Commander Cody to Obi-Wan Kenobi. RotS. I'm SOBBING.
“We make our own decisions. Our own choices. And we have to live with them too.” Commander Cody to Crosshair, TBB S02E03: The Solitary Clone. SOBBING AGAIN!
“A lot of the General's plans involving falling.” Captain Rex to Mace Windu, TCW S02E19: The Zillo Beast Strikes Back. Love Rex's humour! Mace's face in this scene and Rex's deadpan delivery make me laugh every time.
“It's Captain, sir.” Captain Rex to Pong Krell, TCW S04E10: Carnage Of Krell. You fucking tell him, Rex!
“Both of you showed valor out there, real courage. Reminded me of me, actually.” Captain Rex to Echo and Fives, TCW S04E02: ARC Troopers. Toot your own horn, girlboss! You deserve it!
“Fine, but not at that price. I am worth more than 2,000.” Echo to Hunter, TBB S01E04: Cornered. Yes, yes you are, my precious Echo!
“Trace: Is there an echo in here? Echo: Yes. Trace: What? Echo: I’m Echo.” Echo to Trace Martez, TBB S01E06: Decommissioned. This conversation has me rolling every time.
“We’re now being ordered to target the very people we swore to protect, and I will not be a part of it any longer. Who will stand with me?” Captain Howzer to his men, TBB S01E12: Rescue on Ryloth. Yes Howzer! My man!
“After all the clones have done… all we sacrificed. We're good soldiers. We followed orders. And for what?” Commander Mayday to Crosshair, TBB S02E12: The Outpost. I may have a thing for Captains and Commanders who become dissident to the Empire of their own free will. Love Mayday.
“When have we ever followed orders?” Tech to Wrecker, TBB S02E16: Plan 99. The absolute heartbreak for last.
We’re all in clone limbo for now, so let’s scratch the itch
What’s your completely, utterly, forever favorite line said by a clone? Any clone! Clone wars, Bad Batch, prequels, Book of Boba Fett even! Anywhere there are clones!
I’ll go first!
“Better to feel something than nothing old buddy” - Rex, TCW S7 E3 (will find me rendered useless and sobbing on the floor every time I hear it what a freaking amazing line)
Honorable mentions
“Lieutenant” - Crosshair TBB S2 E12 (yes a one word line makes me cry please don’t tell my therapist)
“Just because I understand you does not mean I agree with you” - Tech TBB S1 E16
“You’ve never even met a girl” random clone TCW S3 E1
