NFLYING - Replying with certainty to their sold out tour across Nagoya, Osaka and Tokyo, “Just a little, Budokan is starting to come into our sights.”

On June 7th, the 4 unit rock band from Korea NFLYING held their ‘N.Flying 2019 LIVE IN JAPAN -BROTHERHOOD-’ concert in Shinkiba Studio Coast, Tokyo. It was a concert accompanying the release of their 1st Japanese Album Brotherhood on May 22nd. Included in this album was a Japanese version of the Korean chart-topping Rooftop, which gave them a huge breakthrough. Following this, their first Japanese tour saw huge success, selling out across all 3 performances including Diamond Hall in Aichi and Big Cat in Osaka.

Additionally, the 1st album commemorative release events held in Nagoya, Osaka and Tokyo simultaneous to their tours also finished with great success. On the last day, the event was held on basement 1F of Tower Records Shibuya. However, the line stretched from 9F to basement 3F, and pushed the scheduled finishing time back by 4 hours. Despite this, the members greeted fans with warm smiles from start to finish, and received overflowing praise on twitter for ‘incredible service for 9 hours.’

During interviews for their album Brotherhood, the members would eagerly say things like ‘we’re happy to be able to hold concerts’ and ‘we hope to hold a concert soon.’ Even during this live, they said ‘we’re happy to be able to hold concerts’. The shared this happiness with a full-house of fans, who filled Studio Coast to the fullest capacity in its history. In this place, everyone became one through music and it became a night of shared happiness.

NFLYING is the ‘Cinderella Story’ of the 2019 Korean music industry. Soon after the new year, they released Rooftop. After finishing its (promotional) activities, steadily there was an increase in word-of-mouth. Approximately a month and a half after its release, the song began its chart reversal. It was the first time they had acquired the number 1 spot. In March, in an unusual move, they restarted their promotional activities and also claimed their first number 1 spot on broadcast. As the current ‘hot stars’, the passion of the fans who had been waiting impatiently was also tremendous. As soon as the opening SE (sound effects) began to play, the fans raised their fists while screaming ‘Waah!’. The members were greeted by this as they entered (the stage).

In this concert was: Lee Seunghyub (Vo, Rap), Cha Hun (Gt), Kim Jaehyun (Dr), Yoo Hweseung (Vo), accompanied by their senior, FTISLAND’s Lee Jaejin to support them as (guest) bassist. Upon entering the stage, Seunghyub screamed ‘What’s up Tokyo? Make some noise!’ before they began to play The World is Mine and Lupin from Brotherhood in quick succession. The richness and overwhelming quick rhythm from the twin vocals had the audience’s hands stretching toward the stage. It was also likely the first time for them (NF) to feel this sense of unity being born right from the start.

Within their setlist they showcased all of their songs from the album Brotherhood, while also weaving in their teppan* (?) songs. As has become the norm since Hweseung joined, during the concert they also performed an elaborate collection of songs arranged into an ‘NFLYING style’ in a mash-up medley.

*(Could mean like ‘tasting platter’ teppan style. Meaning short snippets of songs of their choosing)

This time they also showcased a Queen Medley, which was uploaded to their dedicated Japanese Youtube channel (opened in February). Imitating Freddy Mercury, Hweseung picked up the mic stand and announced ‘there’s something I want to do.’ He had fun doing the ‘eeeh oh’ call-and-response from the movie ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ with the fans on the floor.

While wearing black hats, they also performed a Michael Jackson Medley which was prepared specifically for this tour. Hweseung said, ‘Covers are fun, so I want to study them.’ However, he has (already) been showcasing covers of Japanese songs including ones from Aimyon and Yonezu Kenshi in his ‘Try to Sing’ series on his Youtube channel. As a vocalist, Hweseung’s skill, range and expressiveness added to NFLYING seems to have allowed the band to gain musical freedom.

Additionally, Seunghyub who is a vocalist alongside Hweseung, will (in future) not have to focus only on vocals, but can also rap. With Seunghyub the vocals are rich, and the NFLYING-like ‘mixture sound’ is established. The twin vocals are NFLYING’s greatest weapon. Seunghyub, who was on piano during Run, Heal the World and the Michael Jackson Medley, then acoustic guitar for Delight, is a man of many talents. As the main songwriter for Brotherhood and the writer/composer of the huge hit song Rooftop, Seunghyub is displaying the results of his blossoming musical talents.

Then there is the guitarist who unveils his hardcore guitar (skills) Hun, who greatly respects Slash (Guns N’ Roses) and Mark Tremonti (Alter Bridge). Also Jaehyun who, although he is a drummer, is the charming mood maker who draws your attention within songs. While watching the concert, just like the title of the album Brotherhood, the strength of the member’s relationship lies in their musical bond. Through this, I feel as they have been pushed into a higher stage.

From the time of their Rooftop activities, they became a 4 member band. In regards to this, Hun said, “I’ve always wanted to say this. I’m sorry for always causing you to worry. At the beginning of this year we had a big turning point. We, who were always chasing after our dreams together like brothers came apart. Our hearts hurt. The more I thought of everyone who was always cheering us on, the more painful it was. However, your voices saved us.”

He was met with loud applause.

“We wish to repay you with great music and great concerts.” He conveyed his gratitude to the fans.

This time, the empty bass position was filled by Jaejin, a veteran who is in his 12th year since debut. He plays with live-band veteran FTISLAND, and playing with NFLYING this time, I expect they also gained something from him.

“Is there anything we can do to repay you for this?” Jaehyun asked Jaejin in regards to the matter.

To which Jaejin proposed, “We have FNC Kingdom right? Our (FTISLAND’s) vocalist will need to leave us (for army enlistment), however me, Seunghyun (Gt) and Minhwan (Dr) will be performing. Because I helped you out this time, please help us out next time. With that, we’ll be even.”

It seems the brotherhood between FTISLAND and NFLYING will deepen at FNC Kingdom.

From the middle of the stage, came their newest Korean song Spring Memories. It was their first time using acoustic guitars for their (lead) promotional track. As they played this gentle song, loud fan-chants rose from the venue.

The final stage opened with Delight, with Hweseung singing lyrics which conveyed their thanks, and which spoke of the red, star-like lights from the fans which connect NFLYING and NFIA. They performed their Korean debut song Awesome as well as other nostalgic songs.

During their MC section, a surprise announcement was made to their fans. They announced that they were to release a Japanese single in November, and perform their first hall concerts in Nakano Sun Plaza across two days.

Hun revealed excitedly “We’ve started preparing the music and there will be a double title track. Our commemorative release event will be held at Nakano Sunplaza. We’re finally able to perform in halls!”

Seunghyub added reverently, “It’s thanks to all of you that we were able to ascend those stairs. Just a little, Budokan is coming into our sights. Will you keep an eye on our dream with us? For as long as I live, I will never forget this day. Stand by you! Stand by me! Please remain by our side from now on too!” before launching into the lead track of the album Stand by Me.

Matching the rhythm of the drums, calls of ‘Hey!’ rose from the floor as a sudden sense of unity rose for Endless Summer.

To finish, Seunghyub blew a kiss into the audience and said, “We decided on this song for our final song. You gifted us with 1st place, and it was with this song that we were reborn. Your support connects to our current and future dreams. Thank you so much!”

As he conveyed his gratitude, they started singing Rooftop -Japanese ver-, with the audience singing along passionately. They brought it to a close as one, with the highest tension of the day.

During the encore, Hweseung said, “Because you all requested it, today there is one (an encore). From now on, please continue to shine your red lights on us.”

Jaehyun: “When we were the opening act for our seniors, the lights from the audience seemed to float like stars in the universe. Today, I was able to witness NFLYING’s universe. Please continue to exist in NFLYING’s sparkling universe from now on too.”

Hun: “Even if we perform in bigger venues, the image of our first live in Shibuya Cyclone (a venue with 300 capacity) in 2013, remains in my heart. I hope to grow without forgetting my original intentions.”

Seunghub: “I’ve said that in Nagoya and Osaka we wished to convey our power to you. However, instead we received power from you. We want to become a force to be reckoned with.“

One by one they expressed their gratitude. Lastly, the supporting Jaejin also spoke.

“So that NFLYING can become an amazing band from here on out, please give them lots of love,” he conveyed warmly to the fans.

After finishing all 3 songs in the encore Leave It, Fall With You and Songbird, everyone gathered in the centre of the stage. However, for a second time, voices called loudly for an ‘encore’ without stopping.

Seunghyun said in bewilderment as everyone gathered to discuss, “This is a new situation…but if we can stay on stage longer, it makes me happy.”

They played a double encore with Stand by Me. From the audience, shouts of joy sounded, once again showing incredible excitement. Hweseung turned his mic to the audience and shouted echoingly with great strength, as if his happiness were about to explode. Seunghyub gave a thumbs up and said “You’re the best!”

When they all gathered for the final time in the centre of the stage, they gave their final greetings without a mic. “This was NFLYING!”

Having done this, they all gathered around the supporting Jaejin and hugged him in gratitude.

NFLYING began indie activities in Japan in 2013, and have doggedly persevered for 6 years to reach where they are today. They were able to put out a concert overflowing with passionate emotions. However, here, I was able to witness their gratitude to their fans and the member’s strong brotherhood with each other. Looking back in the coming years, I believe this concert will have become a milestone.

Your heels clicked across the marble floor, the echo muffled by the other guests. They were everywhere, scattered all around the gold-tinted ballroom, chatting and drinking from crystal champagne flutes. The chandeliers hanging from the ceiling looked like they contained thousands of diamonds, but even more importantly... A story.

This entire place was story.

Those chandeliers told the story of how they’d hung there for over ninety years, always being of service to illuminate a ball. The floors told the story of how numerous pairs of feet had glided across them in rhythmic harmony. The small stage in the back told the story of the many musicians that had played music there over the years, including tonight.

“The Second Waltz,” you hummed to yourself, hearing the short but distinctive introduction. “Dmitri Shostakovich.” A smile spread across your lips, painted a down-toned red. It was less of bold statement, more of a gentle accent. “Good choice.”

You walked forward, your dress—a red silk that reached farther in the back than the front—billowing behind you in a pool, rippling like water that’d been ever-so-lightly disturbed. Your shoes—strappy and black with expertly placed rose accents—clicked along to your gait, a quiet tap-tap-tap.

The dress was strapless, revealing your clavicle and shoulders to everyone. On a normal occasion, you wouldn’t wear something like that, but here you were... Unknown and draped in wonders. You wouldn’t remain unknown forever, but just for the time being, it was nice to be like this.

It was nice to mysterious and beautiful.

It was nice to be covered with flowing red and elbow-high white lace gloves. It was nice to be hidden by a mask of impressive butterfly wings and it was nice to be showcasing the rubies hanging on your ears and around your neck.

You felt like someone who could turn heads, but without anyone knowing who you were. You were noticed purely for your intrigue.

You heard footsteps behind you.

“Excuse me, ma’am,” you heard.

You turned in a single smooth motion, the loose parts of your intricately twined hair tickling you cheeks. “Yes?” you said, giving the man behind you a once-over. The music changed to Johann Strauss’s ‘The Vienna Blood Waltz’, seemingly perfect background music for the look of the man.

Judging by the bright smile he was wearing, he was probably a little playful. Maybe a little mischievous. But there was something else there, too. An elegance. Maybe it was his long arms and legs, or maybe it was the quality of his suit.

He wore a long dark coat that reached the back of his knees, shrouded in gold and silver embroidery. Underneath, there was a simple white dress-shirt and a pair of slacks, tucked into knee-high boots. His hands were hidden by smooth dark blue gloves, having a bit of a sheen to them in the low-light of the ballroom.

Although, you would argue that the best part of the whole thing was his mask. Most men would be afraid to have something lace on their face—afraid of endangering their masculinity—but he seemed more secure than that, a multicolored flare brought to the whole thing.

There wasn’t anything particularly special about the mask itself. The highlight was his eyes.

Yes... His eyes were what changed the quality of his appearance. Not his suit, you decided. There was something inside of them. An adventure, a promise, innocent fascination and a childish wonder.

“Is there something I can help you with?” you asked.

He shrugged. “Not really,” he said. “I just wanted to say ‘hi’.”

You chuckled and tucked a piece of hair behind your ear. “Well, sir, you have.”

“I guess I have,” he said. “I should find more excuses to talk to you.”

You laughed at the statement. “You’re kidding, right?”

He shook his head, still smiling. “Not at all, miss. What brings you to this charity ball?” he asked.

You gave him a coyly cryptic look. “Charity,” you said simply. “Isn’t that what we’re all here for?”

There was a spark in his gaze, like he sensed your challenge. He was fully willing to accept it; willing to play your game. “Yes, I suppose we are.” Without much thought, you both made your way across the ballroom, walking side-by-side while still retaining a respectful distance.

The song changed once more. This time it was Eugan Doga’s Gramofon.

The mystery man stopped walking and held out his hand. “Dance with me?” he questioned.

Wordlessly, and with a small smile on your lips, you accepted. You took that hand, covered so curiously in rich fabric.

When you made it the center of the room, illuminated directly by the light from the largest crystal chandelier, that’s when you began. Your left hand went to rest on his shoulder, your right hand staying in his. His hand went to your waist, holding gentle, yet firm.

He took a step forward, you took a step back. A perfect carousel-like harmony, gliding across the marble with a simple one-two-three, one-two-three, hitting the down beats with a certain amount of stylish gusto.

The other dancers around you faded away. In this moment, this waltz was the only thing that mattered. Even if it made you uneasy, afraid to mess up, you still felt like this moment was something to cherish, though you didn’t know why. Maybe it was the thrill of mingling with a stranger.

“I hear there are supposed to be a lot of celebrities at this event,” the man said. “Would I know you?” he asked as he spun you under his arm.

“Do you watch the news often?” you asked.

He shook his head. “I try not to,” he chuckled.

“Then, no,” you said, “you wouldn’t know me.” You ended your turn a little closer to him than you had been before, sending a shiver down your spine. “Would I know you?” you asked. “Your eyes look familiar.”

“Do you listen to a lot of rock music?”

You tried to silence a snort. “No, not particularly.”

“Then, no,” he said, playfully mimicking your tone, “you wouldn’t know me.”

There was a short period of time where you just danced, a smooth melding of timing and tasteful style. One-two-three, hold forward. One-two-three, hold back. Hold to the side, hold to the side, fifth position breaks, full box and then turn.

You felt like you were flying, never having to worry about stepping on his feet or messing up the moves. He was a strong leader, and (as all leaders in a dance should be) his first priority was making you look amazing. Even spin, your dress flared behind you in the most beautiful way. Every hold was filled with expectation rather than dead space. Every time his hand brushed closer to you, he pulled it respectfully back to it’s rightful place.

It wasn’t a boring dance at all, but you decided that it wasn’t enough. You wanted to keep talking. His voice had grown on you in such a short time. Or maybe it wasn’t that it had grown on you, but more so that you hadn’t heard it enough and you craved more.

“What do you think of the ball so far?” you asked.

He hummed a thoughtfully. “A little pretentious, maybe?”

“Pretentious?” you echoed. “Why do you say that?”

He shrugged, almost throwing your balance off. “A bunch of celebrities were invited here, right?” You nodded. “Well, celebrities don’t want to be made to feel special.” You waited patiently for the rest of his reasoning. “They want to feel normal,” he said.

“They love what they do, of course, but they also want a safe environment where they can be themselves and mingle and not care about security, fans or impending doom,” he joked. “This is fun,”—he gave you an almost shy look—”believe me, but I think thing’s would’ve gone just as well if this place had been covered in bean-bag-chairs, Nintendo Switches and chip dip.”

You nodded slowly, taking a little time to process. “That makes sense, I suppose,” you said. Without realizing, he spun you one last time as the song came to an end. You looked around, slightly dazed. “It’s... over?” you asked.

He laughed. “Yeah, it is!” He didn’t let go of your hand. “But if you want, we can still talk.”

You nodded, trying to keep yourself calm. But on the inside, you were truly bursting. “That sounds good,” you said softly. Gently you pulled your hand away from his. Though you would’ve liked to keep holding it, you felt creepy for thinking that.

With your footsteps in sync, you walked back to the side of the room, blending in like beautiful, shadowy wallflowers. It was a nice hideaway of quietness.

You talked with each other for a a solid hour and a half, exchanging everything from playful banter to serious discussion and then whether the books or movies were better for Harry Potter.

“So, in conclusion,” you said, “I think Ron Weasley was much better represented in the books.” You crossed your arms, sure you had made your point. You waited for a reply, but it didn’t come. You looked up at him, only to see him staring you, his chin resting delicately in his palm. You chuckled nervously. “Why did you stop talking?”

He blinked, tearing his gaze away from you with a nervous clear of the throat. “I don’t know,” he sighed. “Your eyes stole all my words away, I guess.”

You smiled. “You know—” You were cut off by the screeching static of a microphone being adjusted. The music slowly died off, drawing everyone’s attention to a podium near the central area.

A man—a little boring and mousy looking, especially under his plain white mask—stood there, wiping his sweaty forehead with a handkerchief. He ran a hand through his close-cut salt-and-pepper hair before clearing his throat. “Ladies and gentlemen,” he began, “I would like to start this out by thanking you all for taking time out of your busy schedules to come to the 52nd Annual Seoul Historical Foundation Fundraiser.”

He took a nervous sip of water from his bottle off to the side. “We’ve relied on people like you for support for years now, and the fact that you still continue to come is beyond humbling.” Finally, he took a deep breath, seeming to calm down a little. “And now, a word from our chairman!” he said, stepping away from the makeshift podium with a certain amount of relief in his eyes.

You stood up, as if on cue.

“Where are you going?” the mystery man whispered to you.

You turned around, flashing him a smile. “To work,” you said. You made your way across the floor, people gaping at you as you did. You’d been talking with them and socializing all night and no one suspected or recognized you. You made your way to the podium, a pleased smile on your face.

You lightly tapped the mic, making sure it was still in working condition. “Now that I know you can all hear me,” you said, “it’s a pleasure to fully and finally meet you!” You saw the mystery man’s jaw drop and you had to hold in a chuckle. “I’m the new chairmen of the Historical Foundation, if case you didn’t gather. I took over from my father just this year, due to his age. But it seems the first event that I’ve prepared is more than a little...” You smirked a little. “Pretentious,” you said.

You saw the mystery man cover his face in embarrassment. He couldn’t believe he’d said that directly to the chairman and organizer of the event.

“I’m sorry for that,” you said earnestly. “Someone here tonight brought that to my attention, and I’m grateful for his input. I hope this doesn’t deter you from helping us save beautiful buildings like this,” you said, gesturing to the great hall, “and I hope that—even though I’m clumsy and unsure and new to all of this—that you’ll give me a chance to do better next year.”

You could feel all the eyes on you, but you didn’t feel nervous. You were finally known... But you would be known for something good.

“Thank you, and have a wonderful rest of your evening. Donations will be taken up until midnight.” You gave a short bow before applause hit your ears. It shocked you a little, but you tried to play it cool, giving a polite smile and walking off the podium.

You could see the mystery man watching you as you stepped off, an appreciative smile on his face, still clapping for you with the most fervor out of everyone.

“Hey, Hyeong-seok,” you said, calling over the mousy man with the salt-and-pepper hair.

He scrambled over with a clipboard, his handkerchief stick messily out of his breast pocket. “Yes, ma’am?” he said.

“Who’s that man over there?” you asked, gesturing to your mystery dance partner.

He examined him before giving his clipboard a once-over. “That would be...” He snapped his fingers. “Ah! Kim Jaehyun!” he said. “He’s a drummer from a rock and roll band under FNC Entertainment.”

You smiled. Suddenly, lots of things made sense. “I like him,” you said simply.

“What, miss?”

You shrugged. “I like him.”

I don’t know about you guys... but I kinda need Jaehyun in that fit I described. Just lowkey. Or I could draw it. I’d be good with that, too.

As someone who has been a huge cynic regarding the state of bg music lately i feel it is my duty to talk about the songs that I actually like from bgs this year. Yes y’all in a world where wanna ones career trajectory has effectively wrecked bg music quality for the foreseeable future, there are still songs I like (I’m leaving out 2nd gen male soloists cause I’m still into a lot of their releases for what they are unless they were put out by terrible people ya know. Also note that this list isn’t my favorites per se just songs I like. Finally note that I don’t actually stan any of these groups or people yet save for mx so like don’t ask my biases oops)

Songs that I actually think are cool and interesting:

Stray kids road not taken, side effects, and chronosaurus

Monsta x’s entire we are here album

Nct 127 superhuman (I’m actually not into any of their bsides this time around which is rare but oh well)

Verivery ring ring ring (I’m a sucker for retro stuff y’all know this by now tho their discography is hurt by the fact that their rappers are...not very good unfortunately)

Nuest bass

Seventeen shhhh (but men whispering freaks me out so ehhhh not really)

Onf’s mini (none of the songs have the raw fun power of complete but onf in general are still really good)

Wooseok always difficult always beautiful (mainly cause this song nails the current Emo rap sound? How? Same with lost paradise get this man soundcloud)

and aaaah i totally get it noeasy is one of my face skz albums too! i just love those songs so much (star lost? my biggest love) and same!! i love their title tracks they're always so fun and hype! noise music our beloved <3

and omg that's so funny i totally get that! i actually had that with ateez. i remember first listening to pirate king and thinking ????? no. but then a couple of months (? sorry i have no sense of time) later i heard it again and was like ?????? yes. why did i ever hate this ashjdfsfhgjk.

and ofc !! it had to be taste !!! but it's valid so i'll accept ahsdkg. i recently finally saw a vid of them performing it and !!! insanity.

as for which groups i like, we actually have a lot of groups in common! nct, svt and txt are also loves ! (pls dont ask me to pick biases im very bad at picking favorites ahfjdskhg) and omg day6!! in love with their music truly. i've listened to the rose and nflying and i've actually recently been getting into xheroes and p1h ! i adore kbands (and bands in general tbh) so much!

as for girlgroups, i actually listen to a lot of them as well ! i actually haven't really listened much to stayc but they seem so lovely ! my faves are probs itzy, le ssera, twice, red velvet, purple kiss and billlie? but i'm probably forgetting some agskdh. i actually love a lot of soloists as well but i'll stop here ahsdkf

and yes thanks so much for introducing me to his fancams !! it was so fun ! and ahfjkdhkjf he's insane i love him so. also i think i actually knew that cam!! and ugh so true he's so good it's sickening truly

okay but ateez…..their recent cb was really good like im still obsessed with cyberpunk, new world, etc lol im looking forward to the cb coming up!! idk much about them but i feel like ive absorbed some things through my moots 😂 i had the same thing with ateez too when i first got into kpop, i was like idk if this is for me either but now with nct and skz noise music i think my taste has changed LOL. it’s so interesting how our taste in art (not just music) can vary depending on the timing of when we come across it

the taste performance was crazy let’s not talk about that bc it makes me so unwell HAHAHA (aka lets talk about it bc i am so whipped for that man). lee know in that silk shirt 🥴🥴 how did u like skz replay?? omg and the danceracha stage for gayo daejejeon on new years eve, i cant wait for that 😁

i looove day6’s music too, i think their songs and lyrics have this feeing in them that idk how to explain but it’s relatable, and it also conveys a feeling of hope? i like rock sounds in general which i think is why i like kbands so much ^^ do u have any other fav kbands or bands besides the ones we already talked about? (also fine if u dont lol we listed a lot already)

ooh i listened to billie’s stuff recently and i liked it a lot, i also like their concept and even like the album/track titles! and they make a whole separate album thats a soundtrack for their actual album?? i think thats so cool
