Rochas Byzance
Noses: Alberto Morillas & Nicolas Mamounas
notes: aldehydes, spices, carnation, cardamom, basil, mandarin, lemon, green notes; tuberose, ylang-ylang, rose, jasmine, orris, anise, lily of the valley; sandalwood, heliotrope, amber, vanilla, musk, cedar
Byzance opens with a golden aldehyde-and-civet note that’s almost winy, and then softens to floral powder.
There’s a fluffy iris-vanilla in the heart, and a gentle, ruddy spiciness from carnation.
The tuberose gets a little solo where it rings out clear and golden, and sort of buttery-tropical, enhanced by the salicylate aspects of the ylang-ylang and the creaminess of the iris. I get a bit of a suntan-lotion vibe. But it’s far smoother, richer, and less harshly synthetic than most “beachy sunscreen” type scents. This is top-quality tropical-beach stuff.
The sweet-tart golden wine comes back and plays against the creamy-gold tropical lotion. It’s an odd, throbbing, intense effect, a bit like the “binaural beat” resonances I get in some Lutens perfumes. I think it happens when you have two scent chords that are distinctly different, but are close enough in tonality that they don’t naturally seem to “separate” into a lighter top note and a darker base note. Lutens will do it with two dark sweet notes with analogous “colors”, like “licorice and clove” or “candied orange and castoreum”. Byzance does it with this “Moscato and suntan lotion” gold-on-gold contrast. The “vibration” is impossible to ignore, and hovers on that boundary between annoying and intriguing which always indicates the potential to be someone’s “signature scent”.
Overall Byzance isn’t a scent I’d choose to wear most days — it’s meant for a tanned bombshell trying to make a dramatic entrance. But it’s unmistakably creative and well-executed.

Okay so, I get what the creator of the film "Cuties" was trying to do, honestly. I just watched the trailer, and I have to say that everyone's concerns with this movie are legitimate. The creator was trying to tell a story on how young girls are sexualized and are encouraged by society to make themselves attractive for grown-ups' eyes (especially men), but I don't think showing young girls being sexualized is a good way to represent that. In my eyes, it's almost like making content for pedophiles to enjoy (and I realize that is a tremendous claim to make). You wouldn't draw child porn to say "this is bad and here's why you shouldn't do it" because it caters to the very audience you are saying is terrible in the first place.
Also, Islam is already a religion that people discriminate against, so why would you depict it so ignorantly. I know Mamouna is, or used to be, a Muslim, but even the majority of Muslims haven't learnt about the religion fully or, if they did, it isn't from a good source (as their are many people who pretend to be Muslim scholars to make those who are new to the religion follow them and establish a sort of power among those people). I don't think people understand that there are so many different sects of Islam (about 70) and each follow their own set of rules that govern their lives. Shia, Salafi, Khawarij, all of these and more are very, very different from each other, and everyone experiences Islam differently in each sect.
Anyway, these are just a couple of reasons that the movie is very off-putting to me. That being said, I do want to see this movie because I know trailers often depict movies terribly. However, I'm not fond of going into this movie after watching its trailer.
