You know maybe I should give Seiya/Usagi another shot mseylf. Maybe I'll go read some fanfiction featuring them.

Just no cheating or infideltiy...or framing destiny as some type of prison where Usagi will never find happiness. Absolutely no Mamoru character bashing or blatanty character assasination. Definetly no psychologically suffering Usagi who's only cure is Seiya coming back into their life. And if I see one more time where Crystal Tokyo MUST happen and Usagi is just going along for the ride because of it and Chibi-Usa...

You know what. Here is as much Seiya/Usagi as I can handle. A lovely little piece where Seiya, Usagi, and Mamoru are a throuple, are having a family and features all three of them and Chibi-Usa figuring out a name for the new baby Seiya is about to have.

The way I keep thinking

"Y'know maybe I could ship Seiusa?"

Knowing full well that if I just went and rewatched Sailor Stars that thought process would crumble away.

I wish I could be like "Its okay! I enjoy both ships :D" like I can with other fandoms.

But with Seiya there was just... so much wrong with that in 90s.

And I specifically remember not even giving an ounce of a damn when manga Seiya was with Usagi. Cuz at least there it felt more like Seiya was just trying to comfort Usagi not blatantly asking her out playing Mr. Steal your girl.

Cuz I want to say I enjoy the fanart that pops up when I'm browsing pinterest. But I don't.

The thing about Mamousa, is that Naoko Takeuchi wrote them in a way that I can't begin to picture them not being together. 3 different people kissed Usagi and Mamoru each. I'm not joking! Not to mention 90s Mamoru and Usagi are almost a completely different couple while at the same time being exactly like their manga counterparts. But I still can't split them up! They are just The One True Pair

Mamoru vs. Seiya

I found this picture in a Facebook group years ago. Unfortunately I have no idea who the artist is. If you know please let me know and I will update and credit.

Sooo... Mamoru looks like he's interrupting something serious happening between Seiya and Usagi.

This artwork might have influenced some of the dynamic between these two when I was writing the second arc (Black Moon) of Chaos Theory.

This would have been such an interesting storyline in the 90s anime if the Starlights didn't leave to go back to Kinmoku.

My Response To “Why I love the Toxic Romance of Sailor Moon”

I came across this video online: 

My short response: I disagree. 

My long response: Buckle UP

     It should be noted the video isn’t presenting the argument for just the 90s aspect of the Usagi x Mamoru relationship but is lumping Crystal and the Manga into the argument and insisting it's a toxic romance. The creator of this video breaks down their argument into pointing out three different aspects of the Usagi X Mamoru relationship: 

The age gap and the power dynamic is causes

The lack of choice in the relationship 

How Seiya offers Usagi choice

     Let’s tackle all three of the points and see where the argument breaks down. First off the age gap…sigh…

The Age Gap

     At this point I’m sick of even going into this aspect of the argument. Frankly over the years it comes off as far too personal for many individuals and they can’t separate these feelings when they enter into fiction. If you can’t get over the aspect Usagi is dating an older (4-5 years) man and are uncomfortable with the power dynamic this presents in a relationship then this isn’t the show for you. 

     Still, can people stop acting like it's a huge age gap? This isn’t like the age gap that comes like Bunny Drops (that series really took a turn later in the manga) so can we all stop acting like Mamoru is riding around in a van offering Usagi candy? Moving on…

The Lack of Choice in the Relationship

     The video argues even if you look past the reincarnation element of the Mamoru x Usagi relationship, the introduction of Crystal Tokyo and them becoming King and Queen causes the relationship to become toxic. With this expectation to reach this status, the two are pressured to stay together whether they are ideal for each other or not. This lack of choice is described by the video as being toxic. 

     While the aspects of destiny are prevalent in Sailor Moon, it is important to distinguish the difference between fate and destiny. Fate are the events that will happen when someone doesn't take responsibility. Destiny is what can be achieved through growth and one's own actions. Usagi and Mamoru are shown to be willing to fight for their goals and each other. Usagi wants to be a bride. She wants to be Mamoru’s bride. Mamoru wants to have a family with Usagi so he never feels alone like he did when he was a kid (the movie Sailor Moon R: Promise of the Rose shows this in detail). They support and nurture each other and fight against the forces of evil in the process. 

     It should be noted despite knowing their destiny they still have moments where they need a reminder they need to keep fighting. Usagi has to be reminded at the end of Sailor Moon R to continue the fight. She is reminded of her need to step up by talking with Naru who has no idea she is Sailor Moon.  

      This doesn't just apply to Usagi. Mamoru, upon seeing Usagi with Haruka, feels jealous and is shown to be depressed by it. Only by working together on a project not related to fighting evil but something as simple as helping Chibi Usa with an assignment are they able to reconnect. 

     Also the future they are shown isn't terrible or apocalyptic. The two are shown to be happy, have achieved peace, and are still in love. Why wouldn't they work to achieve it?

The Illusion of Choice With Seiya

     A recent argument I see a lot of Seiya x Usagi fans using is “Seiya offers Usagi choice. Something Mamoru never did.” While it can be argued Seiya is offering Usagi a choice, it is not necessarily a good choice. Look at the hard facts of Seiya’s mission: they are dedicated to Princess Kakyuu and planned on leaving the planet as soon as they found her. Under these aspects, the choices Seiya is offering are not in Usagi’s favor.

At best, Seiya is offering Usagi to leave the planet so they can be together, meaning Usagi would have to give up all her friends and family just so she could be together with Seiya. At worst, Seiya is asking Usagi to engage in a long distant relationship to be together. Considering how critical Seiya was about Usagi engaging in a long distance relationship with someone who was supposed to be on the same planet, the idea of even suggesting such a thing to Usagi makes Seiya a hypocrite. 

In conclusion:

Here are a few examples of ACTUAL toxic relationships in anime: 

Gundam Seed: When Fllay uses sex to keep Kira focused on fighting the enemy forces to exact her revenge. 

Death Note: Light Yagami intentionally manipulates Misa’s feelings to use her as a tool to exact his plan for bringing his version of justice to the world. 

Revolutionary Girl Utena: Akio romancing and bedding Utena for his own purposes while at the same time sexually abusing his sister Anthy.  

Fruits Basket: Shigure slept with Ren (Akito's mother) as revenge for Akito sleeping with Kureno.

These are Toxic relationships where people are legitimately being hurt by being a part of it. Though the future Usagi and Mamoru witness is imposing, their interactions are actually supportive in nature. In summary, I don't agree with this video and continue to express that Usagi and Mamoru have a relationship others can and should ascribe to obtain.

The best Sailor Moon fanfic I've ever read. It's like reading the sequel to Sailor Moon Stars, and just like in the 90s anime there are battles, confrontations with old and new enemies, obviously romance can't be missing... I really recommend this story, if you're a Sailor Moon fan, you'll love it.

This Sailor Moon Cosmo is such a weird mix of the lovable, charming anime, the pensive, deep lore of the manga slammed together with this touch of sci-fi bar fights that absolutely NO ONE asked for. A three of those movies as mashed together, but like how you would mash together three Barbie dolls.

But you know what?

Damnit if I won't take it all just for a little more of Sailor Star "Went and fell for the wrong princess" Fighter.

Let's Talk #SailorMoonCosmos: The Comparisons

Sailor Moon Cosmos is the The Last Airbender of the Sailor Moon franchise. It makes Sailor Moon Sailor Stars look competent by comparison.

For my comparisons of Sailor Moon Cosmos, feel free to keep reading. There will be spoilers.

While the modern adaptation has been far more successful in faithfully adapting the original manga, Cosmos is where it completely falls apart. As I wrote in my review of the films, Cosmos should have been a traditional TV season rather than two films. It was the animated equivalent of M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender by compressing a multi-part narrative into two feature-length films with limited run times.

In a way, it was actually inferior to Sailor Moon Sailor Stars. Even if some concepts were wasted over on that show, such as the high school setting, at least it had time to develop the characters. It also knew when to slow down and give the viewer a moment to breathe, whereas Cosmos felt like watching a badly sped-up NASCAR race.

As for comparisons between the two, there are plenty.

Mamoru’s Death by Galaxia: In Stars, she took his Star Seed mid-flight. In Cosmos, it happens at the airport right in front of Usagi. This was effective in the latter due to how abrupt it felt compared to the former’s prolonged reveal.

Sailor Uranus’ Slap: In Stars, it was towards Sailor Moon after siding with Galaxia. In Cosmos, it was towards Venus after a fight. It worked in both cases, but the former carried more of an emotional impact.

The Identity Reveals: In Stars, it took place on a plane when a monster was about to attack the Guardians and Starlights. In Cosmos, it happened at school when the former confronted the latter about Usagi. It was far more effective in Stars by how the Starlights felt betrayed by the Guardians, whereas in Cosmos it was a nothingburger.

The Guardians’ Deaths: In Stars, Galaxia killed off the Inner Guardians, Neptune and Uranus, while the latter two killed Saturn and Pluto. In Cosmos, Galaxia turned them all to sand. Neither was effective as they all were the magical girl equivalent of a one-sided fist fight, although Uranus and Neptune’s brief betrayal was a decent twist.

The Sailor Starlights’ Fate: In Stars, they survive the final battle. In Cosmos, they die onscreen and get revived offscreen. It was far more effective in Cosmos by how they actually contributed something to the fight, whereas in Stars they turned into the peanut gallery once the fight became a one-on-one between Sailor Moon and Galaxia.

Sailor Chibi Moon’s Time Erasure: In Stars, it occurs after Queen Nehellenia kept Mamoru trapped in her dimension for a certain amount of time. In Cosmos, it happens when Galaxia pushed Mamoru into the Cauldron. It was far more effective in Stars by being the straw that mentally broke Usagi, while in Cosmos it was as lackluster as the other deaths.

Chibi-Chibi’s Fate: In Stars, she was a piece of Galaxia. In Cosmos, she is Usagi from much further in the future. The former made sense as to why Galaxia was corrupted, whereas the latter was purely nonsensical.

Galaxia’s “Defeat”: In Stars, Usagi saves her by the power of love. In Cosmos, she sacrifices herself to give Sailor Moon what remained of her power. Neither was effective, the former being anticlimactic and the latter coming across as her giving up.

The Ending: Stars ends with Usagi and Mamoru kissing under the moonlight. Cosmos ends with them getting married and Usagi pregnant. Both worked, but the latter also served to fix plot holes left behind by Eternal and Crystal.

The Last Line: In Stars, Usagi recalled the opening lines from the very first episode. In Cosmos, Mamoru tells Usagi how beautiful she is. While both were effective, it felt odd in the latter how Mamoru got the last line after only showing up in the films for only a few minutes.

The films did have some decent moments, mostly in Part 2. It was nice seeing Sailor Chibi Moon and her Quartet get involved considering how Stars wrote them out entirely, but the latter being the survivors of the whole Sailor War was unintentionally weird.

I appreciate the films dropping the concept of Seiya romantically pursuing Usagi. It is easy to see how Stars got the idea in the first place by how she saw Usagi as someone similar to Princess Kakyuu.

Ikuku wondering if she saw Usagi off for the last time was a great moment. It felt the closest any adaptation ever explored the possibility of her discovering Usagi’s secret identity. It should have been expanded upon, with her family ultimately finding out at the end. Otherwise, the films ended by implying they died having never found out as they were nowhere to be seen at her wedding.

As for the revelation of Princess Serenity having no birth father, it felt like a hypocritical copout. After these films spent so much time introducing (and then killing off) more characters than an average season of Young Justice, why not bother introducing one more superfluous character?

It was also reminiscent of Anakin Skywalker’s origins in Star Wars, which heavily implied a similar scenario involving him and that franchise's fantastical powers. It is likely coincidental due to the original manga and prequel films being produced nearly a decade apart from one another.

Sailor Moon Cosmos is a lackluster finale, but does it ruin the overall modern adaption of the original manga?

Wondering if you’re being ghosted by your boyfriend (or thinking something bad happened to him), not telling your friends he hasn’t replied, developing feelings for someone else that blur beyond friendship… Finding out that someone is a sailor guardian you’ve known all along, being trapped in the thick tension of the outer guardians and Starlights, fending off relentless enemies, trying to hold it all together while being a high school girl 🥺

Endou Mamoru x Raimon Natsumi

I'm a multishipper, so for each character, I just chose my favorite ship as of right now.

- Male wife x Girlboss

- Endou forces her to wear matching t-shirts

- Natsumi proposed to Endou since he didn't realy care about marriage.

Tsunami Jousuke x Tachimukai Yuuki

- Tachimukai can't swim for shit and Tsunami tries to teach him every time they visit the sea site

- Tachimukai info dumps on Tsunami about soccer info and Tsunami info dumps about the ocean.

- Tsunami is very into PDA and Tachimukai gets embarrassed every time.

Tobitaka Seiya x Utsunomiya Toramaru

- Tobitaka is the one reminding Toramaru to take breaks and eat.

- They organize Cooking and Baking dates.

- Tobitaka was actually very jealous over Toramaru looking up to Gouenji Shuuya so much. Toramaru is teasing him over it.

Fubuki Shirou x Someoka Ryuugo

- Fubuki taught Someoka how to skate.

- Someoka fights with anyone who says Fubuki is Gouenji replacement.

- Someoka and Fubuki flirt with each other and are very open about their relathionship, and it annoys everyone

Gouenji Shuuya x Kidou Yuuto

- They didn't tell anyone cause they didn't think it is that important

- They HATE PDA. Like Hate they won't even kiss each other on the cheek outside of their house.

- Haruna and Yuka are their biggest shippers.

- Gouenji buys Kidou flowers every week. Kidou always has fresh flowers in his office he says he simply likes flowers.

Midorikawa Ryuuji x Kiyama Hiroto

- Hiroto is the first person, and the last one, Midorikawa, had the crush on.

- They are very good parents for Kariya. They want him to have better life They never had

- Hiroto rambles about stars to Ryuji and calls Midorikawa his favorite star.

Sakuma Jirou x Genda Koujirou

- Genda was a couch of Teikou Gauken before Sakuma and still visits them sometimes.

- They adopted Miyabino Reiichi and Genda is his private coach.

- Genda is actually very crafty and makes litlle gifts for Genda all the time.

- Sakuma had a very hard time admitting he is in love with Genda. Genda just kind of went "oh...okay then" and casual asked him out.

Otonashi Haruna x Kino Aki

- They go to collab cafes a lot. By that, I mean Haruna drags Aki, who agrees cause she finds her girlfriends excitement cute.

- They were already together during the FFI arc. Everyone knew already since they didn't really hide it.

- Haruna is like a second aunt for Tenma.

- Aki helps Haruna calm down when she starts to spiraling into the worst-case scenario.

Narukami Kenya x Otomura Gakuya

- Just too chill guys

- They got together online and Narakumi moved in with Gakuya for collage.

- Music boyfriends.

- Gakuya is rambling to Tsunami about Gakuya A LOT. Tsunami does the same about Tachimukai, tho so it's fine.

Henmi Wataru x Sakiyama Shuuji

- Boyfriends since early Teikou Gauken days.

- They go to the same class together and study together, tho it ends up in them just hanging out.

- Shuuji has a big scar on his mouth, and he hates it. Henmi is the only one who can see him without the mask.

Domon Asuka x Ichinose Kazuya

- Kazuya and Domon train togheter to a point of lying on down on the ground and breathing.

- Domon visits Kazuya in the hospital each time he ends up there.

- Domon and Kazuya buy each other gifts, and it's a competition that makes a better gift.

Matsuno Kuusuke x Handa Shinichi x Kageno Jin

- Matsuno hates his name and Handa started calling him max. Jin is the first one who picked up on it

- Max and Handa are the only people who see Jin eyes. They love his eyes and they compliment him a lot.

- Jin makes them small gifts for stupid occasions.

- Handa is self concious, and both Jin and Max get annoyed when he downplayes himself.

Takanashi Shinobu x Toguchi Masahiro

- Okay hear me out. Trans Shinobu x trans Masahiro.

- They adopted kids and Masahiro is the one who actually stayed at home while Shinobu is working.

- Masahiro brags about his girlfriend/ fiance /wife all the time.

- Shinobu is the embodiment of "He makes me laugh"

The Audacity

Something I never can stand in the Usagi/Seiya shipper fics is the idea: "How dare Mamoru go to America and cause Usagi to experience loneliness?"

I'm just here like: Mamoru is an orphan! He experienced 10 years of loneliness with only dreams to give him hope he would eventually find someone to love him. Meanwhile, Usagi experiences being lonely for a few months (partly her own responsiblity becasue she didn't tell anyone how she hadn't heard from Mamoru and was incredible lonely becasue of it) with friends and family around and everyone is willing to come to her defense.

Seriously, leave the poor guy alone.

I just like to talk. And yes, the 90's sailor moon is quite dear to me since its my childhood, no matter how toxic it can be. Not a fan of Mamoru in the 90's anime. I dont exactly remember if there is a princess who falls in love with Usagi tho, since my dvds like to glitch and have.. quite questionable sub back then.

But i do remember lots of Seiya since he.. she..(?), i'll just say he since its seem that way a lot, after being potrayed as a teenage boy in the 90s anime. (Prince Demande? Diamond? Demand? I dont really know what his name is since the sub keep changing for every dvd and region. What i want to say that he is one of my earliest eyes-opening toxic yandere(?) villain love interest... i also a sucker for pretty boys since i was a child apparently, aesthetic seem to be quite everything)

Anyway about Seiya, he is a senshi of another princess (the starlight is the senshi of Kinmoku, which their galaxy is destroyed if memory serves right), so he should be loyal to Princess Kakyuu (the Starlight princess) but instead he falls in love with another princess of another galaxy who is destined to marry another. Ah, tragic, high-probablity (i am delusional) one-sided love, there is lots of angst happening in that fandom fic which i devour as a child.

I mean Seiya can be Sebek or Silver right for the casting? I am just throwing ideas here, not asking you to write me a fic, i just like to yapping.

Like Sebek or Silver should be loyal to Malleus, but they fall in love with another which kinda torn their loyalty, like choosing duty or their leige kinda thing. Which lots of SeiUsa fanfic cane be about. Mind you, the fic from those years are not as high tier, many have HEA ending kind of thing.. or discontinued. But yeah, it can have lots more layers than one dimension problem solving kinda thing where the princess relief them of duty to pursue love and let them live life on earth.

Like i said, i like to yap. But i dont mind whichever twst boys got the seiya part. I just drawing parallels.

There also fics of Usagi, Ami, and Minako go to Kinmoku in disguise for love, or their future children return to the past and more.

But angst also good. I always like how Seiya is potrayed as this miserable guy tortured by his 'onesided love' which grip my young heart with emotion. There is also that fic of the Starlight go back to Earth but found out its already became Crystal Tokyo, since time flows differently between their planets. Many fics is about Usagi defying her set destiny of being the wife of Mamoru and became the queen of Crystal Tokyo, she instead choose to be with the man who she loves.

There is just so much possibilities.

oh my gosh, I love the yapping!! But your right, there are so many possibilities of sailor moon x twst AU fics.

Like, having Sebek or Silver (or both) portrayed as Seiya falling for the reader who is portrayed sac Usagi.

Also the prince demand as the toxic Yandere thing got to me to as a kid, maybe concerning..? BAH WHO CARES??

Mamoru is NOT useless in the Anime Part Tri: Power & Worth

Last time we compared Anime and Manga Mamoru's power levels in order to dissect the idea that anime Mamoru, in being less powerful than Usagi is unworthy of being her romantic partner.

However, there was a lot more I wanted to unpack from this particular idea the 'Mamoru is useless' brigade are prone to pushing. Specifically on the very notion of linking power to worthiness.

Power Creep

This is one of my shorter points but, its seems rather insane to suggest that Mamoru needs to be of a minimal power level to be worthy of Usagi.

Usagi in both versions is at least functionally the most powerful entity in the known universe. Even if we go arc by arc, she is almost always the most powerful person on the good guys team. The time period before she obtained the Silver Crystal was only time when the gap in power between herself and the other Senshi was in any way close, and even then it depended on who you were talking about. Mercury was clearly weaker than Usagi, her attack was a glorified smokescreen. Was she unworthy of Usagi's friendship? Were Makoto and Rei the MOST worthy of Usagi's friendship because they were the most powerful Senshi?

Did they all become progressively less worthy of her time and affection as Usagi steadily grew ever more powerful across the series? In Crystal Tokyo, when Usagi could transform the barren frozen Earth into a glittering utopia, did she have 0 friends because she was now just THAT powerful?

Was Star Serious Laser just so powerful that it meant Seiya ranked highest of all for Usagi's affections? After all, I do not see anyone arguing that Seiya was not powerful enough to be worthy of Usagi's love...almost like there is a double standard in play...

And how demeaning of Neo-Queen Serenity, who was so powerful she could terraform a lifeless planet Earth into a glittering utopia, to allow the now incalculably weaker King Endymion to have sex with her and thereby conceive Chibi-Usa.

Or...does this work by you simply have to be of a minimal power level and then you can be worthy of Usagi no matter how powerful she gets?

Please enlighten me fellow Moonies?

Power DOES NOT = Worthiness

Finally...isnt it just plain old reductive to equate power with worthiness?

Sailor moon is a super hero at the end of the day, so let's look at examples from other superhero fiction. In fact, lets look at the most famous example within the genre.

Superman is by far and away the most famous (though not necesarilly popular) of all superheroes across the globe. Superman can fly, has super streangth, super speed, enhanced durability, heat vision, x-ray vision and sometimes can freeze stuff with his breath. And whilst the exact degree of all of those abilities has varied (originally he was stronger than ten men, later he could pull multiple planets at the same time) he has always been mindbogglingly more powerful than even the most elite of human athletes.

And who has he frequently been paired up with from the past 85 years?

Oh, that's right. A human woman, Lois Lane. She might be extraordinary in her own way, but she isn't going to be bench-pressing a tank anytime soon.

Ah, but there are those who reject the most famous superhero couple in pop culture for that very reason, arguing that Superman should instead be with someone who is powerful in their own right like he is. Someone like, say, Wonder Woman?

The problem here being that...well...Wonder Woman is almost always weaker than Superman. By a WIDE margin. At the end of the day, she is incredibly strong but her strength has limits whilst Superman's are in fact dependant upon circumstances. If he absorbes enough yellow sunlight he is functionally limitless in how powerful he can become. So...is Wonder Woman unworthy of Superman too?

Regardless, let's instead turn our attentions to something more comparable to Sailor Moon.

In Dragon Ball Z the Goku and Vegeta and Gohan can annihilate whole Solar Systems but Mary human women, falling for them because of their strong, wilful and aggressive personalities.

In Yu Yu Hakusho, written by Naoko Takeuchi's husband, the main character is a demonic prince basically and falls for a normal human.

How about all the boxers, MMA fighters, wrestlers and action movie stars who marry people who are not in those kinds of professions, people who are physically weaker than them?

All of them unworthy too?

Power DOES NOT = Worthiness, regardless of gender

Ah, but these are all where the man is more powerful. But...if we argue that the situation is different in the reverse...isn't that just a classic (say it with me folks) double standard?

Are we to seriously entertain the rather backwards argument that a man is not worthy of a woman's affection if they are weaker than her?

If so let's look at some other examples.

She Hulk has dated normal humans Wyatt Wingfoot and John Jameson.

Carol Danvers has the power of a star and has fallen in love with War Machinw, who is a man with high tech armour nowhere close to that power level.

Jean Grey has been more powerful than her lovers Cyclops and Wolverine since even before she became the Phoenix, a cosmic entity so powerful it consumes stars for energy.

Wonder Woman has the power of the Greek Gods and her frequent lover, and in her original canon husband, was a regular human soldier.

In Cutey Honey F, the magical girl reboot of the classic 70s anime that helped inspire Sailor Moon, Honey can annihilate and create anything she can want. She is in love with a demonic prince, but ultimately marries a normal man and private eye who always had her back despite being put of this depth with the threats they faced.

And what about all the women in real life who have married, or remained married to men with disabilities? Men who by any metric are physically weaker than their wives? For example, all the women that married or remained married to soldiers who were horribly injured during either World War? Or, any of the wives of Stephen Hawkins, with even his first wife aware of his illness.

All of which is to say...maybe Mamo is worthy of Usagi's love regardless of him being less powerful than her.
